Research Topic vs. Report Topic
A research paper involves finding facts and theories, evaluating, or interpreting those facts or theories, and then adding some original thought. It is NOT the same as writing a report.
A report records or restates facts without any evaluation or interpretation.
(Roth, Audrey J. The Research Paper: Process, Form and Content. 5th ed. Belmont: Wadsworth, 1986. 3. Print.)
![Page 28: LIBST110A - Summer 2013 - Section 2136 - Session 1](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022081401/557c1af5d8b42a65268b48dd/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)
Research Topic or Report Topic?
● What is the history of homelessness in the Bay Area? ● Should the minimum wage be increased to help the working
poor?
● What is capital punishment?
● When dogs kill, should owners be jailed as serious felons?
![Page 29: LIBST110A - Summer 2013 - Section 2136 - Session 1](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022081401/557c1af5d8b42a65268b48dd/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)
TOPICSFill out your topic slip that you picked up outside. On the backside, you will write your topic question. Work with your neighbor if you need help. Good ways to PUSH your topic in a research direction:
1. What is the best ______?2. Should ______?
You want your question to drive you to make a decision BASED on the information you find while in this class.
