his own evolution as a cartoonist, and how each cartoon he has drawn, lends itself to layered commentary on the subject being discussed, that ranges from rising petrol prices to trust in the banking system. Keshav spoke about painting being his passion, and his focus now on Krishna and the depictions of this popular god, as one painting a day on social media under the hashtag #KrishnaForToday.

Rotarians were finally invited to step up and draw – PP PN Mohan gamely drew the apple, which then became the focal point of the drawing. PP George Cherian drew the basket below, suggesting that the apple is going to be plucked, while PP Rtn. Venkatramani drew a bird about to peck the apple. The final touch was added by Rtn Punkaj Sachdev, who drew a politician with a mike! The final cartoon (page 3) is certainly one to induce thought!

A fun-filled afternoon, enlightening and lively.

In the meanwhile, both cartoonists drew their take on the upwardly mobile petrol prices! You can take a look at what they did on page 3.

The session was interactive with Rotarians enthusiastically pitching in with ideas and comments.

What is a cartoon? Is it different from a caricature?

This and more were the subject of last week's discussion between two cartoonists with different ouvres, who through power point and live demos, made for a spirited afternoon. Rtn. Biswajit began by showing the RCM members the evolution of cartooning over the ages, with and talking about how it

evolved to become social and political commentary. He spoke about how the cartoon takes but a few minutes to execute; but the thought and thinking behind what is communicated takes longer to crystallise.

Both cartoonists were on the same platform when they spoke about how the creation of a cartoon comes from a keen observation of what takes place around them,

people, events, news and more. Rtn. Biswajit commented that what would elicit a smile or a laugh from people, is an art form that takes a lot of thought and conceptualization.

Rubia and Shoukath enjoy taking long walks and are fit as fiddles. May they continue to be so.

We enter Shoukath's spacious penthouse apartment and are

instantly awed by the impressively

decorated interiors and lovely paintings on the walls with a lotus theme. Even the napkin-holder has a floral design. As we take in the surrounds, in walks the breathtakingly beautiful Rubia, Shoukath's better half.

We soon learn that the exquisite paintings of lotuses are Rubia's handiwork. She is a doctor by profession but her passion is art. Shoukath deals with clearing and forwarding and is a typical Namma-Chennai-Boy, lapsing into local Tamil every now and then.

The younger son is doing his Masters abroad and is thinking of starting up something new here. The family are fitness buffs. Both the children and Shoukath, are sportsmen.

The Sheriffs love to travel. They are blessed with two boys. The older one has inherited his mother's genes, and has a leaning towards artistic endeavors. One of his creations adorns the drawing room wall. He is in the music industry in Mumbai, and, we hope, is a successor of A R Rahman in the making. He is also an athlete and

has been running the marathon from the age of 12, and is a basketball player to boot.

Ann Raji Gautham takes us up close and personal with Rtn. Shoukath Sherif and wife Rubia…

The basket below the apple, was sketched by Rtn. George, while Rtn. Venkatramani added the bird, that's just going to peck the juicy apple. The last to bring meaning into this cartoon was Rtn. Punkaj Sachdev, who drew a politician with a mike in the right corner of the cartoon.

This is not just an apple! The first, is an apple, drawn by PP Mohan, which grew into a cartoon with a message, as successive Rotarians added their thoughts and imagination.

Adding petrol to the fire! The speakers, Keshav and Biswajit had different takes on the spiraling petrol prices. Take a look at their cartoons here.

Do you have a unique take on these cartoons? If so, give us one line smart captions for each of these and the best three

will be published in next week's Lighthouse. Mail us at [email protected].
