WINTER 2012 Ligné8

Since Ligné Agency has moved its main offices to Houston, the arriving holiday season means that I not only get to start decking the offices and house with Christmas trees, but that the scorching Texas heat has finally come to a welcomed end. I took plenty of opportunities the past few months to escape however, getting to spend time with the wonderful team at David Sutherland in Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas and Dania Beach. The lovely Ann Sutherland shares her top ten Lust List with us this issue, and the most fashionable man in Dallas is sporting the pages of our “What Are You Wearing” feature - photographed by the extremely talented Richard Bettinger.

A visit to the beautiful rooftop garden at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan inspired our “From the Archives” feature, and I am so thrilled to bring you the artwork and designs that have been a direct influence on some of our industry’s great talents. This of course is just the beginning of what fills these pages, so dive in!

From all of us at Ligné Agency, we wish you a wonderful holiday season, and a very prosperous New Year!

MX: Your sole focus at Ligné Agency is Public Rela-tions, what makes you so passionate about this aspect of the company?

KR: I originally set out out to be a journalist but after tak-ing an Intro to Public Relations class I never looked back. I love the excitement and diversity PR holds. For one, your role constantly changes - one moment you’re pitch-ing a client, the next you’re directing a photo shoot then before you know it you’re assisting in planning a client’s event. Every day you have different challenges and PR forces you to think creatively to come up with a solution. It is such a rewarding experience to see your client in a national publication. Doesn’t hurt that not only am I pas-sionate about Public Relations but I am also a fan of the work of Ligné’s clients.

MX: What is it about the interior design industry that completely drew you in?

KR: When I first started at Ligné, I was just out of college and finished an internship at an art gallery. I didn’t know much about interior design but liked that it shared a lot of attributes with art. After my first month with the com-pany I fell head over heels with interior design. Now, it seems like I can’t go anywhere without dissecting my sur-roundings. There is a real art involved with every piece of furniture or space designed, I love hearing designers’ inspiration and the reason they create their masterpieces. I, myself, could never design an interior or furniture so I am completely entranced with the way my clients put things together. Being around great design you can’t help but feel drawn in. Right now I’m currently obsessed with sofas and lighting fixtures. I will say though interior de-sign may have ruined me, once you know what high end design is - it’s hard to go back to IKEA.

MX: In your opinion, what are the key ingredients to a successful PR campaign?

KR: The key ingredients to a successful campaign are: research, persistence and creativity.

MX: If you could give one piece of advice to companies trying to get placement in a major shelter magazine, what would it be?

KR: Make yourself as well as your product known. Major shelter publications receive endless emails from publi-cists and designers dying for a feature so it is easy to get lost in the shuffle.

MX: Running the Los Angeles office is a big task - tell us about your typical day.

KR: A typical day for me always starts with a cup of cof-fee, preferably from Le Pain on Melrose. From there it is anyone’s bet. I usually check my emails before I leave my apartment so I know what is going on before I set foot in the office. If there is nothing urgent to attend to I try to get on the phone right away with editors to follow up on pitches or see what they are currently working on. In this email heavy world it makes a real different to pick up the phone and make that connection. After my calls I work on my to do list that I wrote to previous day before I left the office. Then I focus my energy on a specific client. From there I pitch or re-work a past pitch to find a new angle. I stay in constant communication with the Hous-ton office in order to bounce ideas off of them and get feedback- I am fortunate to work with a great and sup-portive team. Throughout the day I am intermittently on the phone with clients and researching potential opportu-nities for clients.

A small and exclusive resort, Dunton Hot Springs is tucked deep in the San Juan Mountains of the Rockies. A restored ghost town, the property is sprinkled with hand-hewn cabins furnished with luxurious interiors. The remote resort is cell-phone free but has wireless internet access. Across the resort, an endless amount of activities are available - from skiing across the groomed cross-country trails, to a snowshoe hike

through the vast surrounding meadows. Go heli-skiing, ice skating, snowmobiling, dogsledding and even winter horseback riding in the canyon country surrounding the vineyard. The property also offers relaxing spa treatments, yoga and of course steaming hot springs.

For cuisine, Dunton’s chefs create a new meal daily using only organic local and regional ingredients - many of which come from their own agricultural developments. Lamb is mixed with fruits and vegetables from Dunton’s own farm and vineyard. Dishes are paired with an array of wine from the Sutcliffe winery. Meals are eaten at a long, antique table in the center of the Saloon - a signature nod to the property’s cattle days and a tradition they intend to keep.

Given the combination of tranquil loacation, striking scenery and lavish accomidations, there is no question why this famed resort has been honored with the most prestigious awards in hospitality. Ranked as the #1 All-Inclusive resort in the USA and #6 in the world, Dunton Hot Springs is sure to transform the standards of luxury vacations for years to come.

How world-renowned museums and their artwork have forever inspired design

ARCHIVESF R O M T H E

Finding inspiration is often the greatest beginning to a designer’s vision. Whether a subtle encounter or something sourced with purpose, these inspirations are taken from absolutely

everywhere. Our particular place of interest is the museum - filled with art, objects and artifacts that were created from inspirations new and long past. Some that sparked entire

movements, and inspired artists and designers for years after their creation. We have asked some of the world’s top talents where they venture to be moved, and what works of art have

influenced their designs over the years.

“There are so many wonderful museums in the world that it’s hard to say which is my favorite. But if I had to choose

just one it would be the Grand Palais in Paris. Their exhibits are so often about decoration. And they always have interesting special exhibits. I was last there for the

modern art fair FIAC. After that they held the famous Antiques Fair. Right now there is a Hopper exhibit that is supposed to be fantastic, I can’t wait to see it. There is always an interesting mix, whether modern or classic. The building itself is interesting too, with many fashion designers, like Lagerfeld, holding their shows there. I always look forward to going to the Grand Palais.”

“The LACMA has inspired many wonderful memories for my entire family throughout the years. I have enrolled my kids in various art classes offered through the education program, perused the Pavilion for Japanese Art, and enjoyed Jazz on Friday nights in the Courtyard. Two of my favorite LACMA exhibits were the fabulously curated Modigliani & the Artists of Montparnasse and From the Spoon to the City: Objects by Architects. While on a flawless evening a few years back, I

attended the most riveting opening gala for BCAM at LACMA, which could not have been more beautiful or impressive.”

“My favorite museum is the Frick Collection located in the former Henry Clay Frick mansion on the Upper East Side. You feel like you are in a private home which makes it feel that much more informal and personal than most other art museums. This mansion has a collection

of old master paintings that include works of Renoir, Rembrandt and Monet to name a few. One of the highlights of this museum is the quiet and quaint feeling you get when walking through each room. The 18th century French furniture, fine oriental rugs, Italian bronzes and sculptures displayed throughout, give the illusion that the rooms are still lived in and adds to the unique effect of this lavish museum.”

Kyle Bunting, Inc.

“For me it's the Museo Reina Sofia in Madrid. This museum is small but very important in that it's home to Picasso's Guernica. In this large scale mural, Picasso uses positive and

negative spaces and contorted shapes to create something moving yet grotesquely unified.

It's just spectacular and is a must for Picasso fans.

Jiun Ho and I took inspiration from Guernica and recreated a wall mural for the Maison de

Luxe at the Greystone Showhouse in 2011 - transforming Picasso's concept with the color and texture of hide. Multi-colored hide adds a pop to these pieces that perhaps Picasso never

considered.”

Based in the heart of Taiwan, nARCHITECT’S Forest Pavilion serves as a landmark performance space and shaded meeting area for all visitors to the Da

Nong Da Fu Forest, as well as the eco-park in the Hualien province. The original concept designs were derived from inspirations of an art festival curated by Huichen Wu of Artfield, Taipei, destined for use by the Forestry Bureau with the mission to raise public awareness of the environmental threats of construction developments.

With the official inauguration of the Masadi Green Wonder Art Festival back on May 22, 2011, Taiwanese President Ma Ying-Jeou stood directly in the center of the Forest Pavilion to deliver his administration’s vision for a low carbon future. The opening event was followed by a musical day of dance and performances, as well as speeches from local government officials. Coming to an intimate close, the end ceremony was celebrated by a local community gathering to experience an evening of performers honoring traditional song and dance.

Selected to host the opening and closing ceremonies for Wu’s art festival, the structure has since transformed into a key focal point for the park. The outdoor space includes a circular ring of decking, allowing ample space for spectators to sit or stand while watching a performance within the centralized void space; better known as the circular stage. Forest Pavilion’s outstanding relationship

Pictured above:Technical design for full struc-

ture of the Forest Pavilion

Page 32: Ligné Magazine: Winter Issue

WINTER 2012 Ligné32

to the existing area is significant, yet diaphanous. The structure stands lightly in its environment with minimal disruption, but becomes a beacon of light upon nightfall; artistically displaying the emptiness of the surrounding valley.

The circular pavilion stands structurally sound by eleven shading vaults built of freshly cut green bamboo, organized in two sound rings around a void. The original design motif was inspired by the natural rings of a tree, with the expanding arches reaching out organically - seamlessly replicating the infinite growth patterns of branches on a tree. Using the sole idea of the parabolic arch within geometry, the Forest Pavilion could in theory generate an endless number of structural configurations.

Comprised purely of natural materials, Forest Pavilion visually relates to the internationally-famed 2004 Canopy for MoMA/P.S.1 in Queens, New York; also built of green bamboo. In comparison to construction development however, the structure of Forest Pavilion easily exceeds the technical requirements of Canopy, as the free-standing structure reaches 60 feet in diameter, and 22 feet in height.

Driven by imagination and an unparalleled passion to design, we take a closer look into the

Ligné WINTER 2012 43

or those who claim to be design enthusiasts, Arne Jacobsen needs no introduction. The Danish architect

and designer left his mark as one of the most innovative designers of 20th century.

Born in 1902 in Copenhagen to upper-middle-class Jewish parents, Mr. Jacobsen was admitted to the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Art, where he studied with Kaj Gottlob and Kay Fisher, both acclaimed architects and interior designers. Mr. Jacobsen started making headlines at the age of 23 when he was awarded a silver medal for a chair design at the Exposition Internationales des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in the Paris Art Deco fair.

After graduating in 1927, Arne Jacobsen became an Associate at the City Architect’s Office in Copenhagen until 1929. During this time he partnered with Flemming Lassen to build the “House of the Future” - a spiral-shaped, flat-roofed house in glass and concrete, with a boathouse, helicopter pad and windows that rolled down like car windows. It was with this project that they won a Danish Architect’s Association competition. After years of being recognized as an ultra-modern and successful architect, Arne Jacobsen was exiled to Sweden during World War II, only returning to his native Denmark when the war was over in 1945.

As an architect, Mr. Jacobsen has several standout buildings such as the: Bellevue Theatre (1935-36), The Munkegaard School in Copenhagen (1955-59) and the SAS Royal Hotel

F

Coined as the ‘Danish Corbusier’ of ethereal elegance, this 560 page book conveys the

appreciation and accomplishments of Jacobsen throughout his outstanding career.

Copenhagen (1958-60) which it is considered by many as “the world’s first designer hotel”. In the early 1950s through the late 60‘s, Arne Jacobsen also worked on several prototypes for furniture, wallpaper, textiles and silverware. Some of his most recognized pieces are; The Egg Chair, The Swan and Serial 7th, among others - all of which are still present in interiors today. Famous design companies and fashion houses have become involved in his work by offering their own spin on Mr. Jacobsen’s designs. Most recently, British fashion designer Paul Smith revisited the iconic Stelton Cylinda 5. Mr. Smith has added his colorful vision onto the handles, giving a very distinct, bright and charismatic appeal to the Cylinder line, taking Mr. Jacobsen’s vision to another level.

Arne Jacobsen was one of a few visionary Danish architects and designers that showed the world a different point of view. A way of life with simple, dynamic and functional designs that are living well beyond their lifetime, pieces of art from an Era that will always be remembered for innovation. It is because of this legacy that Arne Jacobsen is, and always will be, an industry Icon.

AB: Chelsea’s office is a lively mix of bold and charismatic pieces - what is your favorite piece included?SW: All of them! Each piece was selected and designed with Chelsea’s vision and guidance. We love the masculine vintage chairs from Thomas Hayes Gallery paired with the transparent coffee table. We also love the photo collage. It is a fun and unique way to bring in a personal touch to the space and we had it specially designed so photos can be updated easily.

AB: What is the most important functionality of the space?SW: The space needed to function as three spaces in one- with none really more important than another. It serves as an office, a hair/makeup area and a comfortable lounge area for people to hangout and take meetings. It

was critical to keep each of those purposes in mind as we designed. To that end, we made a custom hair/makeup station that was clean and simple to flow with the rest of the materials used in her custom bar. We also added stools and plenty of seating so the space could comfortably accommodate several people. The overall goal was to make it a professional, yet inviting space.

AB: How much input did Chelsea give with the decision making process?SW: Chelsea was very involved; she loves the design process. She oversees all decisions and it is really a collaborative effort. She sets the tone of what she is looking for and we go from there. Total team effort and the most fruitful type of client experience. AB: Meredith made a trip out months ago- how long did the entire renovation take? SW: They started the renovation back in early spring- mostly on the bathroom and dressing room elements. However, it was a major remodel from the original space. Most of the furniture and built-ins were custom, so those had longer lead times. All in all, it took seven months.

We have to go with a classic. Chateau Marmont is a Hollywood landmark,

and if only those walls could talk. You have to love the

mysticism of the place, and of course the butterflies on

the ceiling that keep you company at the bar as you

sip a perfectly mixed cocktail with Hollywood’s low

key elite.

LOS ANGELES

For those not afraid to try a little karaoke, Jelsomino might just be just your spot. With fun velvet walls, pop art and a premier drinks menu, it is time to relax and warm up those pipes. This is the place to let your inner-rockstar

shine. Jet-setters welcome - songs are available in English, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish.

RM Champagne Salon is the epitome of elegance with their hand-carved bar, antique furniture and beautiful

fireplace. It is a place to decompress and appreciate the moment, over a

glass of champagne of course!

The Back Room is one of the great spots left that holds true to the idea of a Prohibition speak easy. They serve their cocktails in teacups, and beer in a brown bag - and don’t even try to get in without knowing the password. With the facade

of a toy store and true underground passing, you will start to feel like you are

getting away with something.

WAREhaus is a great mix of shopping with a side of whiskey. For all of the gentleman that are looking to add to their wardrobe

and still enjoy their single malt, this is the place to be.

Being in the heart of wine country, you will find several great wine bars

in San Francisco. However, if you looking for trouble, at The Bourbon

Cart at Bourbon Steak you shall find it! They master the true art of Japanese whiskey service - don’t

be surprised to see some fire table side as they prepare your drink to

absolute perfection.

"Like my interiors, this season’s wardrobe is a dynamic of refined

and edgy elements. Seen here, my vintage Cha-nel jacket plays off the sparkle of these rockin'

ZiGiny Blacklabel platform heels. I like to keep my jewelery to a

minimum when I wear such statement pieces, I don't want to distract from my focal points!"

“Monochromatic Grey’s and Blacks are in for this year’s Fall and Winter fashion, but that doesn’t mean you

can’t add a little flair by mixing bold patterns with rich textures. A Prince of Whales Check suit looks especially rich in a winter wool, and can be un-expectedly matched with a black and

grey gingham cotton weave shirt. The charcoal-grey silk knit tie adds

texture, depth, and a touch of casual-ness to an outfit that’s perfectly fit for a client meeting or an evening out in the city. Suit and shirt by Tom Ford,

tie by Reiss UK, pocket square and tie bar by Dunhill, double monkstrap
