(Re)wind

IMPLEMENTATION:After completing the physical and the digital models of the elevator, the design was installed in the elevator for the duration of a week.

MATERIALS:Cork boardYarnWooden dowels Plastic sheets

OBJECTIVE: To redesign the elevator in Martha Van Rensselaer Hall for the Magnifying Small Spaces Studio, and to provide the occupants in the building a place to take a break from their busy lives.

CONCEPT:The concept (RE)wind is present in both physical and symbolic ways. Physically, people are encouraged to wind and unwind the strings on the walls as a way to provoke a sense of playfulness. Symbolically, the sign asks people to trace their paths in the College of Human Ecology which allows them to reflect on their pasts as well as to leave their marks in the elevator.

Fan Out Lakehouse

SITE INFORMATION: The site is by the west bank of Cayuga Lake. It is on a gentle slope that faces the water with a beautiful North view.

DESIGN METHOD:The Fan-out Lake House opens to the entire north view of the

lake; with its multifunctional spaces and dynamic furnitures,

the Fan-out house minimizes the square footage without compromising its ability to

comfortably support the client’s needs and wants.

OBJECTIVE: To build a 1000 square foot lake house for a retired artist and her family. The goal to maintain a spacious environment and to provide accomodations for all the client’s needs and wants.

The staggered roof allows sunlight to penetrate deeper into the interior; this will brighten up the house with natural lighting and at the same time save money by reducing artificial lights needed. The public spaces have an open floor plan, whereas the private spaces are more partitioned; this makes a clear distinction between the two different functional areas.

The glass façade maximizes view to the lake and the intake

of natural lighting, while the sunshades provide shielding

from glare and rain. The wrap around garden allows the client to further enjoy views

to the outdoors. It can also be used for gardening and function

as a social space for hosting small gatherings.

Branding Human Ecology

OBJECTIVE:To redesign the Viewbook of the College of Human Ecology through improved organization, better depiction of student life, more relevant information, and emphasis on the uniqueness of each major.

DESIGN METHOD:The separation of the majors into individual booklets help portray the uniqueness of each major. The inclusion of the college overview as well as the Humans of Human Ecology booklet ties the whole viewbook into a cohesive document. It also shows the diversity of student lives in the college.
