ENCO Environmental Consultants a.s Assessment of EVRI and the Expansion of its Coverage to the EU 19 PART II LIST OF EUROPEAN VALUATION STUDIES 1. Introduction This is a reasonably complete list of European studies using environmental valuation techniques (Contingent Valuation, other Stated Preference techniques - conjoint analysis, choice experiments, contingent ranking, contingent ratings etc., Travel Cost Method, Hedonic Price Method). Note that several publications might be based on the same empirical study. Therefore the number of original empirical studies is not simply the sum of the publications. The list also contains a few publications which represents collection of studies (i.e. literature reviews and meta analyses). The most complete existing review of European valuation studies done up until 1992 is Navrud, S. (ed.) 1992: Pricing the European Environment (Scandinavian University Press/ Oxford University Press). The book covers the following countries: Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and United Kingdom and reviews about 200 studies. Around the time the book was published, Denmark, Italy and Spain had just started doing valuation studies (especially on forest recreation). The list below contains mainly studies from the period 1992-1999, and clearly shows how the interest in environmental valuation techniques has spread across Europe. As a result of this, and high activity in the European countries that traditionally have done many valuation studies (UK, Sweden and Norway), the annual number of valuation studies performed in Europe has also increased greatly over the seven years that have passed since Navrud (1992) was published. The list below contains about 450 studies; i.e. bringing the total number of European studies to at least 650. The studies are listed in alphabetical order by country in three categories: i) EU member states, ii) EFTA countries and iii) Central and Eastern European countries. EVRI contains the following information for each entered/captured study: author(s), year of publication, title, and reference to where it is published (journal, book, internal report/working paper, external report). This list together with the about 200 studied listed in Navrud (1992), will form the basis for selecting European studies to be captured in EVRI. the web-based database for environmental valuation studies: EVRI - see http://www.evri.ec.gc.ca/EVRI/. In this pilot project we aim at capturing about 15 studies. Based on the criteria that we should capture at least one study in each EU - member state, 15 studies from the list are proposed (marked "*"). Since the valuation methods have developed rapidly over the last 5 years, we have mainly selected studies from the period 1994-1999 in this first stage of capturing studies. Studies on topics which are thought to be of interest to all EU member states (and preferably those funded by the European Commission) have been selected. We have also tried to select studies on a wide range of environmental goods.

LIST OF EUROPEAN VALUATION STUDIES

1. Introduction

This is a reasonably complete list of European studies using environmental valuationtechniques (Contingent Valuation, other Stated Preference techniques - conjoint analysis, choice experiments, contingent ranking, contingent ratings etc., Travel Cost Method, HedonicPrice Method). Note that several publications might be based on the same empirical study. Therefore the number of original empirical studies is not simply the sum of the publications. The list also contains a few publications which represents collection of studies (i.e. literaturereviews and meta analyses).

The most complete existing review of European valuation studies done up until 1992 isNavrud, S. (ed.) 1992: Pricing the European Environment (Scandinavian University Press/Oxford University Press). The book covers the following countries: Finland, France,Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and United Kingdom and reviewsabout 200 studies. The studies are listed in alphabetical order by country in three categories: i) EU memberstates, ii) EFTA countries and iii) Central and Eastern European countries. This list together with the about 200 studied listed in Navrud (1992), will form thebasis for selecting European studies to be captured in EVRI. the web-based database forenvironmental valuation studies: EVRI - see http://www.evri.ec.gc.ca/EVRI/.
