Whether they are homemade, or store bought, I like to know what I’m cleaning with. So naturally, I was pretty excited when I found a recipe for toilet cleaner I could make at home.

Let’s be honest, there’s nothing very exciting about toilet cleaner. Many of us just want something that gets the job done, quickly and efficiently. These toilet fizzies are unique in that you can simply drop one into the toilet when needed, and walk away. No toilet brush, rubber gloves, tough scrubbing or smelly chemicals needed. And best of all, they’re fizzy, which automatically makes them more fun!

My favorite way to express my Mother Nature self is with cleaning products.

FreshDIY Summer

Summer breezes make us

crave a fresh and clean

home – that’s where this

DIY project comes in!

Supplies needed:

• 1 cup baking soda• ¼ cup citric acid (found in

the canning aisle at the grocery store)• ½ teaspoon vinegar• 1 tablespoon hydrogen peroxide • 15-20 drops essential oil (or an orange

or vanilla extract)• Sheet pan• Parchment paper• Measuring spoons• Spray bottle• Mason jars for storage

I scored some pretty blue mason jars at my local Goodwill; this size worked great for holding the fizzies, and I was able to place one in each bathroom.

Using a one-half teaspoon, scoop the mixture into half rounds, and place onto

your parchment covered pan. I recommend working fairly quickly, as the mixture starts to harden and can be trickier to work with as you go.

Lightly spritz the rounds with a mixture of equal parts vinegar

and water to create a barrier on top of each round. This helps them set. Let dry overnight, then place in your mason jar, which can be housed on the bathroom counter.

Add the essential oil drops and gently mix. I didn’t have any essential oil on

hand, so I experimented with adding orange extract. Why not try to use what you have around the house, right? If you have essential oils, scents like wintergreen, lavender, or floral work best. My orange extract scent worked well too.

Simply drop one toilet fizzy into the toilet after it’s been flushed. Your bathroom will be “so fresh and soclean, clean.”

To Use:

To begin, add the baking soda and citric acid to a small mixing bowl. Make sure to remove any clumps with a fork or spoon. These two ingredients together are the power

cleaners! In a separate bowl, mix together your wet ingredients - the vinegar and hydrogen peroxide. Slowly, with a spoon, add the wet ingredient mixture to the bowl of baking soda and citric acid. Do not add the full bowl at once. Remember the volcano experience in grade school? You definitely don’t want that chemical reaction this time around! You’ll see that the dry ingredients begin fizzing as you add the wet ones – this is completely normal.

Personal pieces that have a homemade touch are fun to make and keep, but also work great as gifts! Check out my DIY photo keepsake below, and my ideas for other great personal pieces.

The first thing that comes to mind, for me, when I think of a keepsake, is photographs. I’ve always been one to have a lot of photos on my walls and shelves. There’s something comforting

about always having your favorite people and places surrounding you, isn’t there?

When I began planning my wedding, I wanted to think of a way to incorporate a photographic keepsake into my brooch bouquet. I absolutely love how the photos look amongst my brooches, and I can’t wait to

show my family the finished piece!

DIY Photo KeepsakesBy: Jessica Margenau, Senior Marketing Specialist for Goodwill

back turn

1. I ventured to my local craft store for lockets or other types of pendants that could hold photographs. I found that I had a preference for the pendants that allow for a clear bead to sit on top of the photograph, as this magnifies the picture inside.

2. Since this was for a wedding bouquet, I printed tiny photos of my parents on their wedding day, as well as my favorite photos of my grandparents. For your keepsake, you’ll want to experiment with printing each photo in a variety of sizes, based on your pendant size, to see which photo fits best. I used regular printer paper for this also – no need for the fancy stuff.

3. Once each of my photos was cut and shaped appropriately for the pendant, I held the photo in position, and placed a tiny drop of super glue on the top and bottom edges of the clear bead. When you’re doing this, note that you only need a tiny bit of glue. The glue expands once the bead is placed over the photo, and you don’t want the wet glue to distort the photo (once the glue is on, it’s definitely not coming off!)

4. Since I was placing the photo pendant into my bouquet, I glued a pin to the back of the pendant before placing it into the bouquet. Voila!

This was really simple to do; here’s how I pulled it off.

Your local Goodwill is a great place to find vintage jewlery & lockets!

Did you know you can transfer photos to wax candles? I never did, but after finding this great tutorial from Discount Queens, I’ve made a mental note to try it out! See how they do it here.

Similar to transferring a photo to a wax candle, you can also transfer it to glass votive holders! Goodwill always has a great selection of glass votive holders, and even vases, so you’ll be able to find a piece that works for your specific occasion and photo. I think this would be a fun decoration for an anniversary or birthday party, don’t you? I found a great tutorial, by Inspired Ideas, for doing this.

There are numerous other ways to incorporate photographs into keepsakes.

Here are a few more of my favorites:

Transfer a family portrait onto a thin slab of wood. Many craft stores now carry slices of unfinished wood for this, but you can also look to nature for your supplies! Transferring photos is really easy to do; eHow has my go-to tutorial for doing it!

I love the idea of giving every family member similar gifts during the holidays; this piece is perfect for doing that!

Using a vintage watch, from Goodwill, remove the face and replace it with your favorite photograph. This would make a great gift for a loved one.

That summer sun can do a number of our skin. Keep yours moisturized with this easy homemade sugar scrub!I love sugar scrubs for a number of reasons; they’re easy to make, they typically use ingredients you already have on hand, and they make excellent gifts! Finding “recipes” for homemade sugar scrubs is so easy. I wanted one that specifically had coconut oil in it, as I cook with it most of the time, and tend to always have a large quantity on-hand.

I love this particular Green Tea Sugar Scrub, because it only has three ingredients. The simpler the better (at least in the world of DIY, that is)! Because of the coconut oil, your hands will stay velvety soft, and glowing, without feeling too greasy. Green tea is also anti-inflammatory, so you can use it to help alleviate acne and scars. Take a look at how I made it:

DIY Sugar ScrubBy: Jessica Margenau, Senior Marketing Specialist for Goodwill

Supplies needed:

• (2) tea bags of green tea • 1 cup white sugar• ½ cup soft coconut oil*• One medium Mason jar or

multiple small jars. I found the best jars at Goodwill; they were the perfect size that allowed me to make multiple containers worth! Check the housewares and glass section at your local Goodwill for great containers

Note:*Coconut oil has a melting point of about 76 degrees; any temperature lower will cause it to be solid. To get yours softened, not melted, you can place on top of the oven while it’s pre-heating for dinner, or place in the microwave (on low) for 20 second intervals. After you’ve made your scrub, you’ll find that after some time, the coconut oil may settle in a more liquid or solid state at the top of your container. This is perfectly normal, and completely dependent on the area which you store it. When you dip your finger in for your daily exfoliating, it will mix right back in!

1. Empty the contents of your green tea bags into a small bowl.

2. Add the sugar and the coconut oil to the green tea. Stir all three ingredients together.

3. Scoop into a large Mason jar – or multiple small ones, if you’re giving them away as gifts!

back turn

Make It!

Personalize It!Add Color:Mix in about a tablespoon worth of ground, freeze dried edamame (for green), or freeze dried berries or beets (for purple/red). Just remember to avoid using actual food coloring, as that will dye your skin.

Add Scent:Place about five drops worth of your favorite essential oil into the scrub, before mixing. My favorite essential oils are lavender, peppermint, vanilla and cedar. You’ll find there are a wide variety of scents to choose from. So, why not separate out your scrub mixture into multiple batches, and make a tiny container of each scent? Whether you want to energize, or relax, you’ll have a scrub to fit every mood!

Enjoy!

Summer Essentials for

By: Home DecÓr Expert, Merri

The Summer Season is Upon Us!It’s time to get outdoors. After all, the season is short (especially in the northern climates)

so take advantage of every warm, nice day to be outside. To make the most of your vacation months check out these Summer Essentials:

June is all:

wedding twists

June is the perfect month for getting the yard ready. Even if you don’t have a glorious garden of flowers you can still plant a few pots. Make your garden more interesting by using unusual containers. Copper molds add an unexpected splash of color. Metallics are big this year!

Since we spend so much time outdoors during the summer, create a little secret garden just for yourself. Tuck an old chair among the plants and flowers. Use for sitting and reflection or to simply add height and interest to a little corner.

Don’t forget Fido or the Kitty this summer. Treat the family pets to new (recycled) food and water dishes. Browse the shelves at Goodwill for something unique to serve their dinner in. I love the look of vintage ceramics.

Summer is traditionally wedding season. DIY wedding accessories and gifts help keep the costs down. Instead of the usual guest book, have everyone sign a platter. It’s something you will use over and over in your new home.

July is a great time for pool parties. Nothing is worse than beach towels lying all over the place. Give the kids a place to hang them. Upcycle an old rake! Put it within easy reach and never trip over a wet towel again. It’s the ultimate upcycling project.

Speaking of pool parties, plan your next picnic around a beach theme. Forget paper plates, investing in fun dishes and accessories won’t cost an arm and a leg when you shop at Goodwill.

Summer vacation souvenirs and photos keep the memories of the trip going. Preserve yours in a special way. I love to turn cloches into little time capsules. Make one with glass jars and covers from Goodwill.

Summer also brings our feathered friends. Make a special birdbath. out of glassware. Not only will the birds appreciate it, but it also looks great in the yard.

Before the end of summer, college kids are thinking about decorating the dorm room. It can be an expensive undertaking if you don’t shop at Goodwill. Look for wall art, blankets, desk accessories and more!

The Mason jar trend is still in full force. Lucky for you there are plenty to choose from at Goodwill stores. Make one or a dozen Mason jar mugs for your next picnic.

StylingSummer seems to be what we wait for all year in the Midwest, doesn’t it?

All the things we want to do and see are exciting, but it also make us take stock of our wardrobe options for all those fun events!

Summer

Just what should we take with us on vacation?  What is cool to wear for the celebrations surrounding Independence Day? And lastly, just what stylish items should we have on hand when it comes time to go back to school?  Well, good thing you’re reading this article!  I went ahead with my little team and pulled together

some great style ideas for ALL those summer events, utilizing items I found at Goodwill!  Being stylish and on trend is within the realm of anyone with just a few tips and pointers that we’ll share with you here!

Whether you’re going on a vacation or a staycation, you’ll need some fun separates to add to items you already have in your wardrobe to bring your summer style into focus. Easy separates such as this floral skirt and silk top are perfect for packing up orjust playing around town at your leisure.

The ease of the elastic waist on this skirt make it comfortable, but the belt makes it look a little more stylish. The belt is from my own styling collection. The bright jewelry picks up the colors of the skirt pattern, and just for fun we added in the straw handbag and straw hat for those really sunny days ahead! So save those shorts and a t-shirt for another day and breeze into summer stylishly!

June wish you were here....

We topped it with a chartreuse silk t-shirt that is a vintage Emmanuel Ungaro of Paris vintage piece that I found at Goodwill for $3.99. The skirt was also $3.99.

is what the Katy Perry song says, and so does this look on our model.

We used separates once again to create a special Fourth of July look.

Each piece of this great look can be worn on its own as well, but what

really makes it pop is the sleeveless sequin top in firecracker red that

I had in my styling collection.

It’s always a good idea to have at least one sparkly separate for any

special occasion, especially something like this glittery tank top. You

can really celebrate in style by using the colors of the flag!  The cotton

high-waist capri pants were a great find at just $3.99. They’re a summer

staple of course, but we dressed them up with the top and then used a

blue and white vintage jacket, that I got at Goodwill for $5.99, to take the

whole look to another level!  The fun earrings and awesome red and white

handbag are also fabulous finds from one of our stores. Independence Day

Back-to-school, or in this case back-to-college, is all about having a great coat!

This designer piece is the star of our BTS look! I found this at one of our stores for just $24.99! With a piece like this, you need to go easy on the rest of your look. We took a vintage long sleeved mini dress in dark brown, that I had already, and topped it off with a cotton cable knit sweater in a lovely dark teal that I found at Goodwill for $5.99. We added a small backpack, some gold earrings, and that fall staple, a great pair of boots! Boots are the perfect thing to wear with skirts, jeans, and almost any fall look you can think of. The best part? They were just $9.99 at one of our well organized stores!

When I was little, one of my favorite parts of the school day was reading the notes my mom would place in my lunchbox.

Whether I was having a good day, or a not-so-good day, it felt nice to see a message from my mom. Of course, this was one of those parental moments that I didn’t learn to appreciate until I grew up. That being said, it’s something I will always cherish, so clearly her simple message of love came through loud and clear!

Those memories inspired me to find a way for you to leave messages for your kids throughout the school day. I love the idea of using chalkboard paint for many reasons; once the project is complete it’s simple, inexpensive, and eco-friendly – since you’re saving by not using paper! Whether you’re sending them to school with a note on their bag, or giving them a simple ‘hello’ during lunch, kids will adore and appreciate the messages you leave them with (even if they don’t realize it until their late 20s!).

The instructions are fairly self-explanatory; find your inner Picasso and paint away! Below are the supplies I recommend using, and a few tips to simplify the project.

Chalkboard MessagesBy: Jessica Margenau, Senior Marketing Specialist for Goodwill Supplies needed:

• Chalkboard paint • Foam/sponge brush • Chalk• Backpack, lunchbox, or any

other item your little one carries throughout the day – check Goodwill for any of these supplies

Tips for painting!

1. If you’re painting a lunchbox, you can either paint the inside of the lid, or the outside – whichever you prefer! If you’re painting the inside, be sure to check the label of your paint to make sure it’s food-safe.

2. If you’re painting a backpack, go for an area on the bag that won’t brush up against your children’s clothing; you don’t want that message erased before they get the chance to read it!

3. If you’d like to add another special touch to your project, apply the chalkboard paint over a stencil (cookie-cutters work too!) of your children’s favorite animal or character.

4. Apply at least two layers of the chalkboard paint, allowing the paint to thoroughly dry in between applications. This ensures the paint will dry in perfect chalkboard form!

back turn

Back in my school years, I always loved adding my own personal touch to my school supplies. In fact, I still like adding my own touch to my office supplies nowadays. After all, most school/office supplies come pretty standard in appearance. And, when it comes to supplies like pens and pencils, the lover of writing in me can always use a pop of inspiration – even if it’s from the item holding my pencils!

I scoured the internet for tutorials on DIY pencil pouches, and unfortunately all of them required sewing skills. If you’ve read any of my prior articles, you know that those are skills I have never been blessed with. I was immediately drawn to this tutorial, because kids of all ages can help make it!

For my project I referred to a tutorial from the blog Reuse It, but you’ll find my interpretation of it on the next page.

Make It!The tutorial I referenced used jeans for the fabric. I didn’t have any spare jeans on hand, but I did have a pair of dressy lace shorts that I thought would add a fun look to the pencil case, so I used those. I recommend using a more heavy-duty fabric, like denim, for your pencil case, as I felt my finished product could have been sturdier. Don’t forget to check the racks at Goodwill for denim; you’ll find dozens of options in a variety of denim shades!

Cut four strips of ribbon to measure about 8 ½ inches long – you’ll want the strips long enough to hang slightly past the edge of your fabric. Hot glue these strips down to the edges of the fabric, so that you’ve created a decorative border to the pencil case.

Cut your fabric into an 8-inch by 8-inch piece.

Weave your pencils, pens or markers in and out of the slits.

Cut six horizontal slits in the middle of the fabric, spacing each about ¾-1 inch apart. Do not cut all the way across the fabric; leave about a ½ inch space on each side – this will keep your writing utensils in place!

Roll your utensils up in the fabric so that they fit nice and snug.

If you’d like, you can complete the pencil case by tying the bundle together with an additional piece of ribbon.

Throw the pencil case in your work bag, or your kiddo’s backpack and you’re set!

I honestly never knew how Washi tape got its name. After doing a little research, I learned that Washi tape originates in Japan as it’s often made using the bark of trees that are native to Japan. Pretty neat if I do say so myself! Washi tape tends to resemble the texture of masking tape, and is equally as sturdy. That’s one of the reasons it has become so popular with crafts. The other reason… it’s just so pretty!

Head back to school in style by adding your own personal touch to your supplies, with Washi tape! Using school supplies from Goodwill, and a few strips of tape that you’ve selected, you’ll have one-of-a-kind supplies to help you stand out at school. You’ll find Washi tape in a variety of patterns, colors and sizes at your local craft store.

I added some Washi tape to several of my office supplies, and love the look of it!

Give your school supplies a little pizzazz!

Before: After: Notepads and to-do lists are not usually at the top of my “exciting” list (especially when the to-do list has a lot on it!). I added some metallic gold Washi tape and a stripe of metallic snakeskin tape to the top of my notepad, to add a little something special. It was quick, easy and looks much nicer now!

I found these small memo pads at my local Goodwill. At $0.99 for a 3-pack, I was pretty excited to snag that deal! I like to have these small memo pads around my desk to save little reminders on, and have easy access to any other notes I need on-hand. I added my gold and snakeskin Washi tape to the cover of each pad to make them stand out!

Another easy item to add Washi tape too? Pencils!

What school or office supplies would you add Washi tape too? We’d love to
