Winter 2020-21 Mammoth Services (Operating Season December 15, 2020 to March 1, 2021)

Mike Tranel selected as Yellowstone National Park’s deputy superintendentMAMMOTH HOT SPRINGS, WY - Superintendent Cam Sholly announced today the selection of Mike Tranel as the new deputy superintendent of Yellowstone National Park. He will arrive in the park in early February 2021.

Tranel, a 35-year veteran of the National Park Service (NPS), is currently the superintendent of the Powder River Group and oversees Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area, Little Bighorn Battlefield and Devils Tower national monuments and Fort Laramie National Historic Site. He has served in that position since 2018.

As deputy superintendent, Tranel will essentially serve as the chief operating officer of the park. Yellowstone is one of the largest operations in the NPS with 750 employees and a total budget exceeding $65 million.

“We’re very pleased to welcome Mike and his family to Yellowstone,” said Superintendent Sholly. “Mike has managed a wide range of complex operations and programs spanning Alaska to Washington, DC. He has also worked very successfully across boundaries with many partners, something essential to Yellowstone’s success.”

Tranel’s previous assignments include: superintendent of Klondike Goldrush, Alaska; acting associate regional director for operations, Alaska; special assistant to the Alaska regional director; special assistant to the director of the NPS; and chief of planning at Denali National Park, Alaska.

“I am very excited about this opportunity,” said Tranel. “Yellowstone has been a special place to me for a long time, having grown up in the region and enjoyed many adventures in the mountains in and around the park over the years. One adventure included working two summers during graduate school at Bridge Bay Marina, a great base for exploring the backcountry. During that second summer, I decided to embark on a long-term career with the NPS, so Yellowstone for me is where it all started. I look forward to working with the talented team at the park, partners and local communities. There is a lot we can accomplish together in addressing the challenges of the present and planning for the future.”

Tranel has a master’s degree in Geography from the University of Iowa and a bachelor’s degree in American Studies/Earth Science from the University of Notre Dame. He graduated from Billings Central High School in Billings, Montana and grew up one of 10 siblings near Big Horn, Wyoming and Ashland and Broadview, Montana. His first visit to a national park was a second-grade class trip to Little Bighorn.

He and his wife, Mary Tidlow, have two daughters. Tidlow also works for the service as an architect in the NPS Park Facilities Management Division. Tranel’s third and eldest daughter, who grew up in Denali National Park and Preserve, lives and works in Anchorage, Alaska.

Yellowstone's winter season started December 15, 2020 Tour most park roads by snowcoach or snowmobile

MAMMOTH HOT SPRINGS, WY - At 8 a.m. Tuesday, December 15, Yellowstone National Park opened to the public for travel by snowcoach and snowmobile. Between December 15 and mid-March, visitors can travel the park’s interior roads on commercially guided snowmobiles and snowcoaches from the North, West, East, and South entrances, weather-permitting. Visitors who have proper permits can also take non-commercially guided snowmobile trips.

Traditionally, the East Entrance Road to Lake Butte Overlook (Sylvan Pass) opened December 22 and closed March 1 as conditions allowed. In October 2020, Yellowstone sought comments from the public about adjusting the winter operating dates for that segment of road. After evaluating public comments and completing compliance requirements, the park recently made the decision to routinely open the East Entrance on December 15 and close it March 15, weather dependent. This change aligns operating dates for the East Entrance with other park entrances. The park annually opens roads in mid-December to oversnow travel only. Winter travel ends in mid-March when plowing crews begin to clear a winter’s worth of snow. Roads will start to re-open to automobiles in mid-April.

The one exception is the road from the park’s North Entrance at Gardiner, Montana, through Mammoth Hot Springs to Cooke City, Montana. This road is plowed and open to automobiles all year.

Winter weather is extremely unpredictable and road closures or delays can occur with little or no warning. Come prepared. Carry personal emergency survival equipment and dress appropriately for outside activities in extremely cold weather.

Additionally, the park asks each visitor to recreate responsibly to reduce the spread of COVID-19. If you are sick, do not visit the park. Self-quarantine to avoid exposing others.

Visitor services will be limited this winter, and dates may be subject to change. Check for updates at Explore in Winter. The following list highlights what visitor services will be available and when they will open:

Canyon Village • Lobby and restrooms only at the Canyon Visitor Education Center – December 15

Old Faithful • Geyser Grill and Bear Den Gift Shop - December 15 • Restrooms only at the Old Faithful Visitor Education Center - December 15 • Old Faithful Visitor Education Center - TBD Mammoth Hot Springs • Mammoth Hotel & Cabins, Mammoth Hotel Map Room Barista/Bar, Dining Room, Mammoth Gift Shop

and Ski Shop - December 15 • Mammoth General Store, medical clinic, campground, and post office - Open year-round • Albright Visitor Center - TBD

Service Stations • 24-hour gasoline pumps at Mammoth Hot Springs, Tower Junction, Canyon Village, Fishing Bridge, Grant

Village and Old Faithful - Open year-round Warming huts at Fishing Bridge, Indian Creek, Madison, Mammoth Hot Springs, Old Faithful, and West Thumb will provide shelter. Food, restrooms, and water will be available at some huts. All warming huts, except Mammoth Hot Springs, will open on December 15. Mammoth Hot Springs will open on December 16.

Plan ahead for your winter adventure. Visit the park’s website at www.nps.gov/yell or download Yellowstone's App. In addition to unique winter travel opportunities, Yellowstone also offers a variety of activities such as cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

South Crazy Mountains Land Exchange Draft Decision Released December 10, 2020Bozeman, MT-After more than a decade in the works, the Custer Gallatin National Forest will release the final environmental assessment, finding of no significant impact and draft decision notice for the South Crazy Mountains Land Exchange on December 10, 2020. The Crazy Mountains are located northeast of Livingston, Montana and northwest of Big Timber, Montana. This decision will exchange approximately 1,920 acres of National Forest System Lands for 1877.5 acres of private lands owned by Wild Eagle Mountain Ranch (WEMR) and Rock Creek Ranch (RCR). Immediately following the publishing of the legal notice, a 45-day objection period will be open for those who previously submitted official comments during the initial public comment period.

In the fall of 2019, the Custer Gallatin National Forest released a draft environmental assessment proposing a land exchange between the Forest Service and three separate landowners in the southern Crazy Mountains: Crazy Mountain Ranch (CMR), WEMR and RCR. These three ranches were evaluated together for environmental analysis purposes, though the proposal also outlined that the parcels could each be considered individually.

The Forest Service heard feedback on the draft proposal during a public meeting in Livingston as well as throughout the official 45-day public comment period. “What we heard from people was tremendous passion and a strong sense of place for these areas in the Crazy Mountains,” says Forest Supervisor, Mary Erickson. This robust public input demonstrated that while there was general support for the WEMR and RCR portions of the proposal, there were many concerns and questions regarding the CMR exchange component. The released draft decision moves forward with the WEMR and RCR exchanges but will not make a decision on the CMR exchange component at this time. Forest officials determined that more time and consideration are needed regarding the CMR exchange before making a decision on that exchange.

Objections, including attachments, must be filed via mail, express delivery, or messenger service: (to Objection Reviewing Officer, USDA Forest Service, Northern Region, 26 Fort Missoula Road, Missoula, MT 59804); FAX to (406) 329-3411; email to [email protected] or by hand-delivery Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., excluding holidays at USDA Forest Service, 26 Fort Missoula Road, Missoula, MT 59804. Formats that will be accepted for electronically submitted comments are: Word, PDF, and/or Excel. The objection period ends at COB on Monday, January 25, 2021.

The environmental assessment, finding of no significant impact, draft decision notice, and supporting documentation are available online at: https://www.fs.usda.gov/project/?project=56687. Additional information regarding this action can be obtained from: Dee Closson, Realty Specialist, 406-599-7752, or [email protected].

Know that when you're dining in town this season you will likely experience a longer than normal wait time with limited options. On July 14th, four buildings were lost in a devastating fire, two of which were restaurants. The loss of the fire compounded with strained supply chains, staff shortages, record breaking visitation, and the spread of COVID-19 are all contributors to our stressed dining establishments. Our locals are doing their best to serve our community and visitors. We encourage you to pack your patience when enjoying our variety of excellent dining establishments in Gardiner this season and be gracious to our small community.

Please keep in mind that the following factors are effecting the daily schedule of restaurants:• Limited staffing• Supply chain disruptions/irregularities• Staff testing positive for COVID-19• Seasonal schedule adjustments
