Hiker-Biker Shuttle Begins Mother’s Day Weekend The shuttles run on weekends only and will depart from the Apgar Visitor Center WEST GLACIER, MT –Beginning May 13, the spring hiker-biker shuttle that began last year will once again be availa-ble on the west side of Glacier National Park. The shuttle will run on the weekends (and Memorial Day) and will stop at the Apgar Visitor Center, Lake McDonald Lodge, and Avalanche Creek (once the Going-to-the-Sun Road is open to Avalanche Creek). The hiker-biker shuttle will operate every 30 minutes, beginning at 9:00 am at the Apgar Visitor Center. The last shuttle of the day will depart Avalanche Creek at 5:15 pm. It will operate until the Going-to-the-Sun Road opens fully to vehi-cles. Last year was the first year of the hiker-biker shuttle. The park continues to evaluate this pilot program including monitoring shuttle ridership and shuttle impacts on reducing parking congestion. On sunny spring weekend days, it is not uncommon for parking lots to completely fill with people hiking and biking up the portion of the Going-to-the-Sun Road closed to vehicle traffic. The hiker-biker shuttle is made possible in part through donations from the Glacier National Park Conservancy. A por-tion of those funds came from last year’s Glacier Ride – a six-day fundraising bike ride in the park organized by Climate Ride. These funds will support shuttle operations and bicycle trailer acquisition. This year, the park purchased one addi-tional bike trailer, and each trailer will be enabled to carry up to two tandem or recumbent bicycles. Additional bike racks will also be purchased this year. Hikers and bikers may travel as far as conditions allow on weekends when plow crews are not working. During week-days, hiker-biker restrictions are in place to allow road crews to work safely. For updated hiker-biker restrictions, please visit:https://www.nps.gov/applications/glac/roadstatus/roadstatus.cfm Visitors hiking or biking beyond closed gates should be alert for snowplows and other heavy equipment on park roads as well as areas of ice, slush, avalanche zones and falling rock. On the weekends, it’s possible to travel many miles beyond the closed gates, and well beyond cellular service. The nearest public phone with emergency dialing capabilities is locat-ed outside of the Lake McDonald Lodge. Visitors should prepare and take similar precautions as they would when un-dertaking a backcountry hiking trip. Please be aware of wildlife on park roads and report any bear or mountain lion ac-tivity or sightings, regardless of the location, to a park ranger. Volunteer bike patrols will be riding the roads during core weekend hours, providing information and visitor services. The volunteers will have the ability to call for help in the event of an emergency. This year, the park is continuing research work with the University of Montana to monitor bicycle use within the park during the shoulder and summer seasons via bicycle traffic counters. The research is being funded by the Glacier Nation-al Park Conservancy, and will help the park better understand and prepare for this emerging activity. For more information about biking in Glacier National Park, please visit: https://www.nps.gov/glac/planyourvisit/bicycling.htm

One Fine Page: An Evening with Park County Authors

Livingston: The Yellowstone Gateway Museum is partnering with Elk River Books for a special author event, “One Fine Page: An Evening with Park County Authors,” to commemorate the museum’s 40th Anniversary. The free event is slated for Thursday, June 1, beginning at 7:00 pm, with the doors opening an hour earlier, at 6:00 pm. The event is held at the museum, 118 W. Chinook. Authors who currently or once resided in Park County will read one compelling page from one of their published works. The event showcases the writing of local authors, representing different genres and topics, not necessarily about history. The idea originated with David Quammen who hosted an evening at the Country Bookshelf years ago. That event brought together au-thors and those who appreciate the written and spoken word, and was very successful. Authors who will be participating include Elise Atchison, Marc Beaudin, Tim Cahill, Charlotte McGuinn Freeman, Ralph Langer, Scott McMillion, Ilona Popper, Karen Reinhart, John Taliaferro, and Maryanne Vollers. As the date nears, there may be more authors who join the event. Books by participating authors will be available for purchase with book signing afterward. The museum will be open one hour prior to the author event for participants to peruse the museum. The reading will take place on the second floor of the museum, necessitating the climbing of stairs. Wine and cheese and other refreshments will be provided. For more information, please contact Ka-ren Reinhart, Yellowstone Gateway Museum, 222-4184, or Marc Beaudin, Elk River Books, 333-2330. Visit our websites, www.yellowstonegatewaymuseum.org and www.elkriverbooks.org, or find us on Facebook.
