Motor vehicle crash stops traffic for nearly three hours on Going-to-the-Sun RoadIncident caused by driver swerving to avoid a car stopped for bear along road
West Glacier, MT – Around 5 p.m. on Monday, the park responded to a report of a vehicle 40 feet down an embankment off the Going-to-the-Sun Road near Packer’s Roost, several miles below the Loop. The vehicle had swerved to avoid another car stopped in the roadway to view a bear along the road. Park rangers performed a technical rescue for the people in the motor vehicle. Park sawyers cut down a number of trees so that a tow truck could remove the vehicle. The three occupants of the car that went off the embankment were transported to the hospital in stable condition, two via ambulance and one via ALERT helicopter. Also around 5 p.m. on Monday, park rangers responded to a call at Lake Josephine for a visitor who suffered an open ankle fracture after falling from a horse. Rescuers carried the patient to the trailhead, where an ALERT helicopter met them to take the injured rider to the hospital. During these two incidents, the park also responded to a report of an infant locked in a car, two missing parties, a bear struck by a car on Highway 2 outside the park, a DUI arrest in Many Glacier, and an abandoned dog at Logan Pass Visitor Center. Hundreds of vehicles and multiple shuttle buses were delayed along the Going-to-the-Sun Road during the motor vehicle accident response near Packer’s Roost. Park dispatch received numerous calls from family members concerned about delayed visitors on the road. Because of the number of cars on the road during periods of high visitation, even minor accidents along the Going-to-the-Sun Road can delay traffic for hours while law enforcement response or rescue efforts are underway. Last year in early July, the Going-to-the-Sun Road was closed for several hours due to a vehicle collision at Triple Arches. “Unexpected incidents in the park can have significant consequences for visitors,” said Glacier National Park Superintendent Jeff Mow. “Always carry extra food and water, even if you are not planning on hiking into the backcountry. You should always plan for the unplanned, including delays along the road or elsewhere.” Glacier National Park law enforcement and emergency services incidents year to date are up 40 percent over 2018. Total calls for service are up 500 more calls year to date over 2018 figures. Due to the increased number of calls, Mow remarked, “Visitors can help by planning their trips, communicating with their family members about their whereabouts, and being prepared to change their itineraries depending on current park conditions.”

Elevation, relative temperatures, soil types, and precipitation patterns all play a role in what you find blooming in various areas at different times of the year. In addition, far-reaching events such as fires can cause spectacular blooms of species that thrive on the conditions these events create.
Remember that many of Yellowstone’s wildflowers are also very important parts of animal diets. The bulbs of spring beauty and glacier lily, for example, are vital spring foods of the grizzly bear. Wild strawberries are collected by ground squirrels and chipmunks; the seeds of most wildflowers are used by birds and insects. Even the petals of many flowers are eaten by animals. Bees and other insects collect nectar and pollen. Review the list of reported sightings from the current and previous years to see when some wildflowers have been spotted.

FWP reminds boaters of hazardous river conditions Bozeman, MT — Two recreationists were caught in a hazardous spot on the Gallatin River in separate incidents last week where a cottonwood tree recently fell into the river. Both boaters were uninjured, but their watercrafts — a canoe and a paddle boat — became stuck in the log jam. This hazard is new and appeared recently between Logan and Missouri Headwaters State Park. But similar hazards exist in all rivers across the state and, like this one, are altered by constantly changing river flows. Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks reminds boaters to use caution everywhere they recreate. Boating, while enjoyable, is inherently dangerous. Boaters and other people who recreate on Montana’s waterbodies do so at their own risk. Historically, boating accidents are not uncommon in Montana. Between 1998 and 2018, 134 people died in boating accidents in the state. Of those fatalities, 71 occurred on a river. And in 73 percent of Montana’s drowning deaths, the victim was not wearing a life jacket. Here are several recommended precautions boaters can take to avoid accidents and injury: • Always wear a life jacket. Make sure the type of life jacket is appropriate for the activity. Montana law
requires that children under age 12 wear a life jacket when they are in any boat shorter than 26 feet.• Avoid downed trees and other visible hazards in the water. Practice situational awareness and know that
dangerous conditions can appear and evolve without warning.• Abide by Montana’s boating regulations. A copy of these regulations can be found online at fwp.mt.gov or
at any FWP regional office.• Follow vessel safety checklists provided by FWP and the U.S. Coast Guard, including an inventory
of necessary rescue equipment. These checklists can be found online at fwp.mt.gov/recreation/safety/boating.
• Consult the U.S. Geological Survey for daily streamflow conditions. Avoid recreating on rivers during high flows.

Yellowstone to conduct traffic safety checkpoints MAMMOTH HOT SPRINGS, WY - Yellowstone National Park law enforcement officers will conduct traffic safety checkpoints in the park the week of July 8. Park rangers will look for driver and vehicle safety violations and impaired drivers. Motorists may see an increased ranger presence on the roads. Park staff are committed to safety and safe driving. With more than 450 miles of roads, Yellowstone’s unique driving conditions can be extremely challenging due to high traffic volume, rapidly-changing weather conditions, and visitors and wildlife on roadways. Visitors are reminded that federal law requires the occupants of vehicles to wear seatbelts when driving on all park roads. Find updated road status on the park website, visitor centers, and by calling (307) 344-2117.
