WILL WRIGHTMANAGING EDITOR

New editor, same commitment

I’m Will Wright, the managing editor for LOCAL’s Metrocom edition who will now assume the same duties for the paper serving northeast and north-central San Antonio. I grew up in the area, attended North East Independent School District schools and the University of Texas, and then launched a journalism career that now spans 30 years.

Our Metrocom edition, which I’ve edited since July 2013, regularly addresses the same issues currently facing residents in Zone 3, where escalating commercial and residential developments are helping satisfy the needs of a growing population.

We’ll continue to report on local government in San Antonio, Hollywood Park and Hill Country Village, where officials are grappling with plans for future transportation, water and environmental needs, as well as challenges facing public schools and the military.

LOCAL newspapers are directly mailed to residences and not found in stores, restaurants or other venues. We serve more than 200,000 readers in five monthly, zoned editions. Our focus remains on keeping you informed with features and in-depth stories that matter – covering topics that influence our area’s quality of life.

I am looking forward to spending time throughout the area in search of those stories, and nothing is too small or inconsequential in helping us report the overall picture.

Again, I’m happy to be aboard serving Zone 3. As usual, please continue to send us story ideas, notices of community and civic events, and other thoughts by giving us a call at 338-8842 or by emailing us at [email protected].

Remember Alamo, don’t forget plazaby SUSAN YERKES

In the chilly pre-dawn hours of

March 6, 1836, Mexican Gen. Antonio López de Santa Anna

ordered the final assault on a band of freedom fighters holed up in a Spanish mission-turned-fortress called the Alamo near the San Antonio River.

The battle was fierce and bloody. In a couple of hours, every defender was dead. In the aftermath of the slaughter, soldiers on the side of an independent Texas carried the cry “Remember the Alamo!” into the decisive battle of San Jacinto, which led to the defeat of Mexican troops.

Today, there’s hardly a soul in Texas who

doesn’t know the story of the Alamo. The question is not if we remember

the Alamo. It’s how we will remember its surroundings, known as Alamo Plaza. Some want decisive change, or “placemaking” — a big buzzword in urban planning. And let’s face it, Alamo Plaza isn’t exactly a jewel-box setting for the Cradle of Texas Liberty.

Today, the Alamo is surrounded by a jumble of traffic and tourist shops. Beyond the walls of the well-kept grounds, there’s little that reflects the Alamo’s significance to history. First-time visitors often leave scratching their heads and muttering, “Is that it?” For true-blue Texas history buffs that can be a bitter pill. Over the years, several glorious plans have been put forth to create something more impressive than the “Alamo experience” of today. Most have ended up on the shelf.

One reason is the expense of reshaping Alamo Plaza. Another is the sheer number of landowners involved, from the city, state and federal governments to individuals and businesses. But in 2011, when the state General Land Office took over control of the Alamo, the stage was finally set for serious change. Then-Mayor Julian Castro’s “Decade of Downtown” initiative added more impetus.

On March 6, 2014, the City Council

passed an ordinance to form a new Alamo Plaza Advisory Committee. In December, after months of discussion, with plenty of community input, the council approved a new Master Plan for Alamo Plaza. Next, the city will hire planners to create a blueprint for change.

There has been serious talk of the city leasing Alamo Plaza to the state to further streamline the process, and that might make more state funds available. The land office has already begun raising money for a state-of-the art visitors’ center, and a place to showcase the extraordinary collection of Alamo artifacts British rock legend and Alamophile Phil Collins has donated to Texas.

The new plan incorporates more of the original footprint of the Alamo. And while the Spanish mission will always be most vividly remembered because of the battle, the plan also brings in more of the history of San Antonio itself. The native peoples who settled here, Spanish soldiers and missionaries, Mexicans, Texians, Tejanos and many more immigrant groups played key roles in shaping San Antonio. They’re all part of the story of Alamo Plaza.

Alamo aficionados need not fear that change will detract from the legend that has stirred hearts worldwide. But creating a richer context for visitors to experience

the Alamo is a promising vision. Downtown housing is booming,

HemisFair Park is shaping up, and the Broadway corridor is bustling with residential life. What a great time for Alamo Plaza to re-emerge as a beautiful, and more meaningful, center of downtown. That could help connect the city in new ways.

By all means, showcase the “13 Days to Glory” siege of 1836. But in addition, connect the place more clearly with the original La Villita, the river and the historic Spanish missions on the South Side. Connect it to the reconstructed Main Plaza, where the new sound and light show at San Fernando Cathedral draws people together. Connect it better to the Institute of Texan Cultures. If Alamo Plaza is closed to traffic, as some suggest, expanded parking on downtown’s fringes will also be critical.

For more than a century San Antonio has been recognized as one of the nation’s most enchanting cities, in large part because of the richly diverse cultural mix that bubbled out of years of conflict, transition and cooperation. Let’s hope this time the stage is set for truly memorable change.

RECENT DECISION by the U.S. Air Force to select Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland as the host base for its Installation and Mission Support Center headquarters. The facility will provide jobs that support Air Force day-to-day activities, including civil engineers, personnel, contractors and security forces. The Air Force predicts the AFIMSC headquarters will include 350 jobs. Hiring should begin this summer and be completed in late 2016. “This is good news for San Antonio and a fantastic decision by the U.S. Air Force,” said District 23 U.S. Rep. Will Hurd, R-San Antonio. “It says a great deal about the exceptional job being done by those in command at Joint Base San Antonio and I commend them for it. Their reputation and commitment to excellence has led to new jobs for the hardworking families in our area.”Added District 28 U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-Laredo: “These new jobs are a great investment in the city of San Antonio from the Department of Defense that will spur ripple effects of benefits for the economy, and I’m pleased these new personnel will be able to call San Antonio home.”

The Air Force said JBSA-Lackland was selected in part because of its location and current number of support personnel.

VOTERS SELECTED A NEW STATE SENATOR AND NEW STATE REPRESENTATIVE in a special runoff election on Feb. 17. Jose Menendez defeated Trey Martinez Fischer for the District 26 senate seat held by Leticia Van de Putte, while Democrat Diego Bernal toppled Republican Nunzio Previtera for the House District 123 seat held by Rep. Mike Villarreal. Both slots became available when Van de Putte and Villarreal announced intentions to run for San Antonio mayor. In the senate race, Menendez garnered 60 percent of the vote over fellow Democrat and state representative Fischer, who had tallied the most votes among five candidates in the Jan. 6 election. Bernal, a former City Council member, took 63 percent of the runoff vote to defeat Previtera.Menendez, the current District 124 House incumbent, becomes one of only 11 Democrats in the 31-seat Senate. Elected to serve out the remaining two years of Van de Putte’s term, his House seat will be filled in another special election later this year.

67-acre park at 16675 Jones Maltsberger Road as a place for people to enjoy nature. The Friends recently adopted the tract as part of the city Parks and Recreation Department’s Adopt-A-Park Program.

The nonprofit organization seeks to increase its volunteer membership to help keep the park clean and safe, while balancing protection for wildlife and recreational opportunities in a way that doesn’t harm the Edwards Aquifer recharge zone.

“There is a core of probably 12 people right now that are active and involved on a regular basis,” said Michelle Stewart, Friends founder. “While our core membership is small, we are newly formed and, frankly, this group has the heart of a lion. I appreciate them all; together we move forward in this quest of nurturing nature.”

problem on their legs. Others want to change the way their teeth look.

Dr. Greg Hamon, of The Vein Institute of San Antonio, said that although many women experience problems with spider or varicose veins after menopause, it can start much younger. The bigger factor is genetics, he added.

“If one parent had them, your chance of getting varicose veins is 67 percent,” Hamon said. “If both had them, your chance is 98 percent.”

Today, newer, less-invasive techniques to treat cosmetic and medically necessary conditions have eliminated the need for general anesthetics while shortening recovery time.

Hamon uses lasers at The Vein Institute, 7940 Floyd Curl Drive, to treat varicose veins. Pulses of laser light are delivered inside the vein, which causes it to collapse and seal. For spider veins, a tiny needle injects a medication that irritates the lining of the vein. In response,

the veins collapse and are reabsorbed. Both procedures are done in-office

under local anesthesia. Following the procedure, a bandage or compression hose is placed on the leg. Patients are able to walk immediately, as the vein laser treatment requires a few days recovery.

Meanwhile, dental procedures to enhance one's appearance are also being improved.

Here’s a shocking statistic from the American Dental Association: About 25 percent of adults 60 and older no longer have any natural teeth. The most common causes of tooth loss are gum disease and tooth decay (cavities). Because the teeth of older people can decay due to gum recession, they may have new decay at higher rates than children.

The effects of tooth loss are not confined to the mouth. The ADA warns an abnormal bite or missing teeth can lead to other health problems.

New trends in senior care address quality of life

Growing Older

Programs honor patients as they age

by BONNY OSTERHAGE

Even without tooth loss, smoking, coffee and tea consumption, poor dietary habits and hit-or-miss hygiene can rob smiles of their sparkle. A number of local dentists offer both surgical and nonsurgical ways to preserve existing teeth, to replace missing teeth and to make smiles more attractive.

Dr. Terry Lee, a dental surgeon with DDS Dentures & Dental Services at 6051 FM 3009 in Schertz, said procedures from surface whitening to implants are available.

Lee called dental bleaching “a very excellent procedure for people who want a better, brighter smile.” The in-clinic bleaching procedure takes only 10 to 15 minutes. Lee added his clinic can also give patients a do-it-yourself kit for use at home.

Dental implants are artificial tooth-root replacements that are used as a part of prosthetic dentistry to compensate for tooth loss. Implants can stabilize existing dentures and act nearly like natural teeth.

Smoking increases the risk a dental implant will fail to integrate with bone tissue, and also affects gum health.

Although natural teeth can be replaced by dentures, implants, or a combination of both, Lee stressed, “Taking care of your own teeth is probably the best way to go.”

No longer referred to as nursing homes, many senior-living facilities now include assisted or independent options, depending on the level of care required. Amenities can run from group outings to on-site gyms, restaurants, coffee shops, hair salons, pools and movie theaters.

Independence Hill, 20450 Huebner Road, offering full-service apartments, garden homes and assisted-living

As the average life expectancy for men and women continues

to increase, many senior-living facilities and health providers are rethinking how to care for this growing segment, focusing on quality of life.

communities, has added a computer center and classes in social media, email, photo sharing, texting and video chatting.

“We encourage technology use because it’s a big, evolving world and this helps residents stay connected with friends and family members,” said Martha Weld, executive assistant.

Independence Hill also utilizes the Wii gaming system for golf, bowling and other activities the elderly can enjoy in spite of physical limitations.

Another trend is a new “high-tech, house call” program from WellMed, which helps seniors with persistent illnesses manage their conditions, with minimal disruption to their lives.

Known as palliative care, this service provides the same procedures received in a clinic such as X-rays, joint injections and more, all from the comfort of their residences.

“We turn the home into a mini-urgent care center,” said Dr. Elizabeth Glazier, associate medical director.

Professionals are also rethinking a “one- size-fits-all” approach to chronic conditions such as diabetes. According to Dr. Jennifer Argumedo, with Diabetes America, “The goal now is not ‘strict’ control, but instead

we focus on ‘adequate’ control,” she said. Several reasons precipitated the

retooling. For example, the current consensus is that slightly elevated blood-sugar levels may be OK depending on the patient. However, whenever those levels dip too low in elderly patients, there's an increased chance of them becoming weak or dizzy, making them susceptible to falls.

“We don’t want them to fracture a hip or sustain any injury that may decrease their quality of life and their ability to live independently,” Argumedo said.

Another approach is ensuring older residents are given the dignity they deserve.

“Namaste,” loosely translated, means, “The spirit in me salutes the spirit in you.”

At Arden Courts of San Antonio, 15290 Huebner Road, an assisted-living facility focusing on memory care, the term is embodied through specialized programs and activities designed to honor those in the last stages of Alzheimer’s disease.

During Namaste Care, patients are escorted into a cozy room with a fireplace, positioned comfortably in a recliner and covered with special blankets. A lavender scent and music fill the air as staffers administer hand and foot massages, and facials.

“It’s an honor for us to take care of these people, right up until the end,” said marketing director Barbara Conley.

Stewart said the group acts as advocates for the park.

“The more we looked into the park and saw its purpose, we then realized there was no organization for the park, which had no voice,” she said. “So we started a small grass-roots effort to change that.”

Mud Creek Park is home to a variety of plant life and wildlife. Live oak, cedar, mesquite, mountain laurel, prickly pear and yucca are among the plants that make up the landscape. Some of the creatures that call Mud Creek Park home are whitetail deer, grey foxes, raccoons, opossums, owls, rabbits, hawks, blue jays, cardinals, hummingbirds, doves, Texas tarantulas, milkweed assassin bugs and armadillos.

“The park absolutely fascinates me with its vast and abundant wildlife,” Stewart said. “Our goal is to serve the habitat and animals by keeping an environment that serves them and allows park visitors to enjoy themselves safely within that environment. The natural thoroughfare for the animals keeps the animals off the streets, highways and residential and commercial areas, keeping animals and people more safe from harm.”

Other than a few sitting benches, a restroom and 1.4-mile walking trail, the park is pristine.

“The park is special because, as part of an undeveloped greenbelt, it protects the wildlife that live and travel through it,” said Friends member Stephen Alexander. “The safety of our roads and highways is served by deer and other animals having a means to travel without sharing the trafficked roads.”

The Friends plan to continue beautification and enhancement projects that don’t disturb the natural environment. They also want to increase public awareness of the park, so individuals and families will use it for healthy play and exercise.

“Mud Creek Park has challenging running and cycling trails,” Alexander said. “Most importantly, it serves the people who visit. We

need to walk more, get outside more – just do more than shop and drive and work.”

Last October, the Friends conducted its first official cleanup day at the park, when members picked up trash, removed overgrowth on trails and painted park benches. The cleanup was a great success, according to Stewart, and the results of the volunteers’ cleaning efforts have lasted months.

The Friends plan another get-together in early March.

“We had such great success with the park cleanup day that we really don’t need to have another one again so soon, so instead we are planning on a park get together day on March 7,” Stewart said. “Sort of like a meet and greet for people that enjoy coming to the park.

“Also, if people are new to the park we are going to plan a walk and explore, to basically familiarize them with the trails in the park. That should be good fun. We had a really nice time on our last gathering and expect the same again.”

The organization’s other goals are to add a few more benches, trailheads enabling visitors to follow marked paths, and adding a kiosk at the park entrance that will contain a map of the park and announcements and other news about the facility.

“The idea is that there will be marked trails for mountain bikers, walkers, runners etc., and the trailheads would be the least impact (to the park environment) possible,” Stewart said.

Alexander said because the park personally means so much to him, he and other Friends members who feel the same are dedicated to caring for the nature within its boundaries.

“Go to the park and walk, spend an hour with your eyes open and mouths closed, and I promise you’ll find one reason to protect and care for your park,” Alexander said. “Go again another day and you’ll find another reason. Then keep going.”

MacARTHUR continues from pg. 01

For the seventh year in a row, students in the school’s Electrical Systems Technology Magnet Apprenticeship Program, known as EST, have volunteered to wire three to four houses each year for the nonprofit organization.

“It’s a really good learning experience; I’ve been doing it since I was a freshman,” said Nathan Schramm Tibbit, a senior EST student. “We’re working for people who need it.”

About 40 students usually help wire the Habitat homes. On Jan. 14, they worked on three houses on the West Side, just a short distance from the first area home ever built by Habitat for Humanity.

The school’s partnership with Habitat began shortly after Steve Albert became EST director. He said he wanted to give his students opportunities for more real-world applications of their learned skills within the community.

“We wanted something else the students could participate in where they’re going to get some on-the-job training, as well (as helping) benefit somebody,” Albert said.

The students are supervised through their duties. Each home has a senior team leader, who ensures every member is properly positioned and instructed. Experienced electricians are also on the jobsite to make sure everything is installed correctly.

Although Mac’s EST program had aided other organizations in the past, Albert said its relationship with Habitat has proven mutually beneficial. Stephanie Wiese, vice president of development and communications for the San Antonio-area Habitat operation, said empowering recipients – and the students lending a helping hand – is what the organization is all about.

“It’s a win-win, it enables us to build our houses, it gives us some expertise on the site, and gives students a great way to learn their trade,” Wiese said.

Habitat for Humanity, established nationally in 1976, builds 50 to 60 homes each year for local low-income families

applying to become first-time homeowners. Recipients must satisfy several requirements before receiving the keys to a home.

Included is completing several hundred hours of sweat equity – which is time spent helping construct their homes – and completing courses on homeownership. In addition to learning skills working alongside certified electricians, MacArthur’s EST students learned even more through interactions with Habitat’s future homeowners.

“I think them interacting with our families – and (seeing) there is poverty – they learn there are solutions that can help families get out of poverty, and that’s really important,” Wiese said.

Mac’s EST program began in 1973, Albert said. Students learn all they can in classes before working with an electrical company during or after school and on weekends. Their work hours count toward on-the-job training after they graduate. About 40 companies currently support the program by training and/or hiring the students.

Albert said North East Independent School District has been very supportive of the program.

“The average age of an electrician today is 57, so there’s a lot of opportunity for young people in this particular trade,” Albert said. “We’re here to put more

electricians in the field, that’s why we’re here, to give students a great occupation – as an electrician or an engineer.”

Schramm Tibbit currently works for Cappadonna Electrical Contractor Inc., which offers residential and commercial electrical services. He said he loves his job, despite sometimes having to work weekends in the warehouse or out in the field.

“You never do the same thing two days in a row. It’s an adventure every day,” he said.

Albert said EST’s Habitat participation was the program’s first off-site project of the year. He said he’s hoping the students can add more electrical services to some houses.

Schramm Tibbit said working with Habitat for Humanity has proven a great motivator for the students in enabling them to apply their learned skills.

“It’s cool to see myself grow every year and learn and be more efficient every year,” he said. “It’s also really cool to see that in the other guys, to see them grow and get a skilled experience.”

Other NEISD and area schools have also partnered with Habitat for Humanity projects. Wiese said Mac’s students are dedicated and have a lot of fun each year they volunteer.

“It’s been a real good thing, it really has,” Albert said. “Habitat looks forward to us, and we look forward to it.”

Solana Zoe celebrated its grand opening Oct. 4 at 14359 Blanco Road in the Cadillac Plaza.

De La Cruz said her newest venture focuses on women’s apparel and accessories that shoppers are not going to find anywhere else.

“We focus on having very distinct looks and exclusive pieces,” De La Cruz said. “I don’t typically restock.”

The boutique is named after De La Cruz’s daughter, Zoe Solana, who

is also the inspiration in her life. The boutique offers faux-fur vests

and fringe shorts to dresses and more, with plenty of trendy accessories.

“It’s different and I love it. It’s stylish and you’re not going to find these pieces” anywhere else, De La Cruz said.

Her energies are directed at collecting unique and versatile pieces that match other clothing items, both in the shop and in customers’ closets.

De La Cruz said she tries to keep abreast of trends, while changing fashions to keep pace with the seasons, colors and styles. She also tries to sell at affordable prices and ensure her store is different from other boutiques.

“Some boutiques try to go with the bohemian look. I feel like my look is a little bit more edgy, it’s very young and fun, but the quality is really good,” De La Cruz said.

Something is always going on at the shop, according to the owner, whether it is a sale or a fundraiser. De La Cruz just hosted a charity event with Sunset Moonlight and Bill Miller Bar-B-Q, to raise funds so 10 families could enjoy Thanksgiving dinner.

She also hosts pop-up shops for other boutiques or small businesses.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and closed Sunday and Monday.

“Good service and good food will bring the people back,” said Hill, who added he takes great pride serving generous portions and varieties of Southern seafood dishes that entice hungry customers to return.

Hill’s newest location at 13954 Nacogdoches Road opened Oct. 13, with the other restaurant in Converse. Hill said he’s planning a third eatery for New Braunfels.

Bayseas offers a school of underwater menu items such as catfish, trout, shrimp and others, served in

different ways and combinations.“I was a chef in Louisiana working

for someone else,” he said. “I also worked on a ship (as a cook) back in the mid-1970s. I was working and cooking for everybody else and people were coming to me wanting to eat my food. I took my recipes and, by the grace of God, started my own restaurant business.”

Diners at Bayseas can also reel in side orders and appetizers to complete the home-style meal, including french fries, hush puppies, onion rings, coleslaw, fried okra, baked potatoes, vegetables and more – capped by a wide selection of desserts.

After nearly 40 years as a restaurant owner, the chef believes his decades-long experience has

enhanced his food preparation.“My greatest joy is satisfying my

customers, and a lot of people know about Bayseas now,” Hill said. “They really seem to enjoy my food and it’s my enjoyment to see their enjoyment; to see them come back for more.”
