Google—Internet Marketing’s Holy GrailOf all the many search engines available on the Internet, Google tops the list and leads the competition by far. Ac-cording to recent statistics from hitwise.com, Google con-sistently controls nearly 75% of the search traffic on the Internet, with Yahoo a distant second.

This means that if you want to dominate the local search rankings, you must understand how Google does its rank-ing, and you have to adjust your strategy accordingly.

Although no one (except Google insiders) knows the exact formula, the general parameters are not a secret and we do know quite a bit about how it works.

With respect to the other search engines, for the most part, if you can dominate the rankings in Google, you have done enough work that the other engines will follow suit and a ripple effect will occur. For this reason, Google is the key player and receives the most focus when it comes to local search domination.

How Google Ranks a WebsiteGoogle ranks a website with a process called PageRank. PageRank gives every website a score, and the key de-termining factor controlling this score is the number of backlinks a website has and the value or “weight” of those backlinks. Backlinks are links from other websites pointing to your website.

If those websites that link to your website in turn have a lot of other websites with hyperlinks pointing to them, then you rank even higher in the PageRank algorithm because they have a higher score and you will show up

higher in the search results. In popularity terms, if you are “popular,” meaning you have a lot of backlinks, and the websites you are popular with are also popular, then you are even more popular.

Besides PageRank, Google uses more than 200 other pa-rameters to determine the search rank of a website. And Google prefers websites with natural looking content, so unnatural content can actually hurt a website. For ex-ample, duplicate articles or web pages posted in multiple places, or the overuse of a keyword phrase within a page, can lower the ranking order. In short, quality of the con-tent is also important.

How To “Get Popular” on the WebYou have two alternatives to getting higher in the search rankings. First, you can simply transact business normally and wait for everyone to start talking about you and link-ing to your website. As the hyperlinks to your site in-crease, and the content builds around you naturally, your PageRank will increase, more people will find you, and you will do more business and increase naturally in the search rankings. Unfortunately, this outcome is unlikely, and if it

happens at all, it will take a very long time. One reason for this is that other companies are actively promoting themselves using some of the methods we outline in this eBook, and since they are taking action to promote them-selves, you are not going to beat them in the local rank-ings unless you get involved and play the same game as they are.

So what exactly needs to be done?

Although it is not a perfect science, it is safe to say that if you increase the number of backlinks to your website, then your website will get ranked higher for the keywords associated with your site. This simple premise underlies our strategy, and this is the basic approach we use in our traffic system at OneYearAds.com: in essence, we increase a client’s “popularity,” or PageRank score by increasing the number of backlinks to their money website. Not only do we increase the backlinks, but we also improve on the quality of those backlinks. As a result, our clients enjoy a dominant search ranking in their local markets.

As discussed above, the basic strategy is to increase the number of quality backlinks to your website. To accom-

plish this, our traffic system uses a wide spectrum of tools and methods.

We also respect the fact that Google is a moving target, and as such we must keep abreast of what is required to dominate the local search rankings. In short, we perform constant research to ensure what we are doing works. We keep our hand on the pulse of Goolge and the other search engines. Keyword Research and DevelopmentReal Internet Marketers know that the key to success-ful Internet marketing is to promote effective keywords. These are words or phrases relevant to a website. These keywords have both search uniqueness and commercial intent.

Link DimensionIn simple terms, Link Dimension refers to the variety and scope of websites and techniques that we use to add weight to the links coming to a client’s site. By varying the Link Dimension associated with a Client Money Site, we are able to strengthen the authority of those links, and this helps to improve the local search ranking.

These Web 2.0 properties must be keyword specific and must be created for each of the keyword phrases associat-ed with your site. On average, we build about 100 or more keyword specific Web 2.0 properties for each client web-site, and we do this each and every month. Article Marketing - Link DimensionMany people differ in their opinion about the effectiveness of Article Marketing, but we have learned from experience that article marketing is extremely effective when per-formed correctly. Articles need to be consistently written and must have unique, quality content that people want to read.
