    When did the Olympics begin

    and end? The first Olympic Games

    at Olympia were held in776 BC. The games

    occurred every four yearsuntil 393 AD, when theywere stopped by theChristian ByzantineEmperor Theodosius I.

    free born Greek inthe world. Therewere separate men'sand boys divisionsfor events. Womencould only enter theirhorses in events ifthey were theowners.

    Ancient boxing had fewerrules than the modernsport. Boxers fought untilone man was knocked out,or admitted he had been

    beaten. There was no ruleagainst hitting anopponent when he wasdown.

    There was no weightclasses within the mensand boys divisions.Opponents for a matchwere chosen randomly.

    Men wore leather stripsaround their wrists whichleft their fingers free.

    The pentathlon wasa 5 - eventcombination ofdiscus, javelin,jumping, running,and wrestling.

    races at Olympia.

    The stadium racewas the oldest event

    of the games.

    Runners sprinted for

    1 stade, or the lengthof the stadium.

    The other races werea 2-stade race, and

    a long distance runwhich ranged from 7to 24 stades.

    The Greeks had oneparticular grueling

    event. This was a 2to 4 stade race byathletes in armor.

    Pankration This event was agrueling combination ofboxing and wrestling.Punches were allowed,although the fighters didnot wrap their handswith the leather strips.

    Rules outlawed onlybiting and gouging anopponent's eyes, nose, ormouth with fingernails.

    Attacks such as kickingan opponent in the belly,which are against therules in modern sports,were perfectly legal.

    Equestrian Events

    There were both 2horse and 4 horsechariot races.

    Races were held withhorses. The coursewas 6 laps around thetrack (4.5 miles), andthere were separate

    races for full-grownhorses and foals.Jockeys rode withoutstirrups.

    The Olympic judgescame from Elis, alocal region which

    was part of Olympia.The Elean peoplehad such areputation forfairness that anycheating at the gameswas a shock.
