PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Year 12 Thank you to all the parents and carers and staff who supported the Year 12 formal last Wednesday evening. Some 390 people shared in the celebration of the end of six years of secondary schooling for our 110 HSC students. A list of prize winners is included in the newsletter. The big announcement of the night was that of the Dux for 2012, Matilda. Matilda is to be congratulated for her consistent hard work, and for making use of her obvious talent. Thank you to Mrs Brown and her team of Year 11 hostesses and Mrs Reynolds who organised the evening and MC, Mr Stewart. Thanks also go to our special guests for the evening Mr Fred Kelly (chairperson of the Macleay Valley AECG ) and P&C president , Leanne May.

Matilda

Success ! Excellence and achievement is always rewarding for staff of a school and the staff at Melville have good reason to feel rewarded recently. Students who wish to focus on their talents and achieve can and do. Congratulations go to the two teams of talented young mathematicians mentored by Mrs Reynolds. One team consisting of Jay, Josh and Kris, have won the Australian Bureau of Statistics Maths Competition NSW Division. The other team consisting of Jaime, Sarah and Alex, received a “highly commended” in the same competition. As mentioned in a previous newsletter four German students Matilda, Maddie, Siobhan and Sherilyn accompanied Mrs Briggs to Sydney to compete as finalists in the Goethe Institute German language film competition. While they did not take home the

prize, just being selected was a wonderful achievement. During HSC Marking various students who have produced excellent examples of practical work are short listed for various displays and performances. This year our success was outstanding. In Visual Art Moshe and Emma were

selected for Art Express. Three drama performances were short listed

for OnStage. “And We Smile” a group performance of four students: Chelsea, Samantha, Matilda and Grace. Also two individual performances “Caring” by Matilda and “Storm” by Jacinta.

Matilda was listed for the Bravissimo concert which shows the talents of HSC candidates from the North Coast and New England schools.

Matthew, Kelly and Alex were short listed for the In Design display at the powerhouse museum in Sydney for their industrial technology wood work projects.

To date, I have received notification of the following successes in university early entry programs: 2 students have been successful in the E2

program at Sydney university 20 students have received early entry to

Southern Cross University. 6 students have received places at various

campuses of Southern Cross University. 1 student has been invited to participate in

the interview process for admission to the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology.

Well done to all these students for the hard work and for showing that you can work with the staff to achieve such success. Transition of Year 6 to year 7 All prospective Year 7 students are invited to the transition open day on 5 December. Please contact Mrs R Townsend or Mr R Kallmier if you have any questions about the day. Focus 10 All of year 10 have been meeting with their interview panels in the past week and showing off their achievements to members of the

community and school. This program which has been established and maintained by Mr Smith and a team of dedicated staff has become one of the highlights of our school. Each year, ten students have to meet with an interview panel made up of community members, year nine students and staff. In the interview they discuss their year’s successes. They are then given feedback on their performance in the interview. Reports from the community, staff and students unanimously support the benefits of this program for the individual students and the school.

School Helpers On Friday evening, I spent a very enjoyable evening with the volunteers who assist at the school canteen and the P & C. I was able to thank all these people for their contribution to the schools’ students and finances over the past year. I encourage all parents who have a spare day or even a few hours to contact the school and see if they can be fitted onto the canteen roster. The P & C meets at 6.30 pm on the second Monday of each month. I value the contribution of all parents and invite you all along to hear about the school and contribute to the decisions made about the education of your children.

School Improvements I have just approved the expenditure of $75,000 in maintenance and improvements. Painting of the school is proceeding apace and this money will see much needed external painting continue. Approximately $15,000 will be spent on security doors and fencing. This improvement will ensure that there is effective security and that access to the school is effectively monitored and controlled by school staff.

Lock Out and Lock Downs On Monday 12 November, we received information which indicated that a person was placing messages on Facebook which suggested he may have intended to harm himself or students at Melville. As a result, I instituted a lockout which involved alerting staff and students to the issue and securing all entrances and exits. Unfortunately, some students chose to text and phone each other and parents and carers, spreading rumours about the issue which were ill informed and untrue. I have spoken to all students and informed them that the emergency procedures of the school forbid any student or unauthorised staff member from communicating electronically during an emergency. This is to stop panic responses and to reduce undue concern.

The biggest issue on Monday was the flood of phone calls which clogged our phone system and prevented us from effectively managing the issue. I would request all parents have a discussion with their child and explain to them the need for teamwork and cooperation during an emergency response.

HONEY SPOT EXCURSION REPORT On Wednesday, November 14 twenty people from the classes 7P and 7J went with Mr Guihot and Mrs Thomas to see the play “Honey Spot”.

The Story of the Play by Wil (7P)

“The play is about an Aboriginal boy who met a white girl and they worked together to make a multicultural dance that included native aboriginal dances and ballet. The forest ranger was the girl’s father and was portrayed as a racist. With only weeks to the performance the aboriginal boy’s cousin, William, was caught illegally chopping down trees. The forest ranger caught him and the dance was cancelled. Then a snake bit the forest ranger and the Aboriginal people helped him. In one final week the ranger realised he was a racist and apologised to the Aboriginal people and the dance was finished. The dance was a success and cousin William lived to see another day without looking through bars.”

The students enjoyed the opportunity to view professional live theatre. The play deals with issues of racism and reminds us that if we all work together and value differences, that there is a great deal to be gained. All who went were extremely well behaved and presented and brought credit to Melville High School. Mr Guihot (Head Teacher Visual Arts)

AKUBRA MUSTER

On Friday, 9 November, a number of Melville students and staff braved the overcast and bleak conditions to support 2012 Akubra Muster. It was a very successful event as a World Record of 1912 people wearing Akubras was set, which was almost double what they hoped to achieve. Grant Denyer from the “Sunrise” morning show attended the event and it was televised live. A number of our students had the opportunity to meet Grant and have their picture taken with him. Mrs L. Wilson (Drama Faculty) and Mrs B. Coughran (Maths Faculty).

COWS CREATE CAREERS

Nineteen Melville students were involved in this program which was most generously supported by Dairy Australia to highlight opportunities in the dairy industry. Mr Mike Jeffrey, a prominent local dairy farmer, loaned the school 4 Holstein Friesian calves each of which were looked after by students divided into 5 teams called:

COWGIRLS, comprising Lachlan, Luke, Troy, Blake, Caitlin, Sheridan, Julie Anne, Thomas, Jack and Amanda.

GROUP 2, comprising Kiana, Emma, Kacey, Rhiannon, Brittany and Hope

I AM NUMBER 4 comprising Jaimee, Nicole, Sharnee and Kimberley.

PATSY’S PEOPLE comprising Clayon and Angus.

HOPEFULS comprising Jessie Anne, Hope, Jack and Isobelle.

Emma & Kiana

Each group was required to maintain a healthy calf for 3 weeks and monitor features such as its height, weight, heart rate, temperature and food intake. At the same time, they trained it to the halter and lead. At the completion of the 3 weeks, each group put together a presentation which was judged by Dairy Australia against other schools in our area which also competed (Kempsey High, St. Pauls, Wauchope, East Port, St. Claires, from Taree and Wingham High). Even though our teams did not win, they performed well and enjoyed the experience, especially the presentation day. Our schools best performed team was I AM NUMBER 4 and our best individuals were Clayton and Hope .

Lachlan, Luke, Troy, Blake, Caitlyn, Sheridan, Julee-Anne,

Thomas and Amanda.

Mc AG DAY

Mc Happy day was supported by our animal nursery of guinea pigs, rabbits, rats and chickens and was very well patronised by lots of little ones. A huge thank you for the dedication of Michael Doevendans our Ag assistant and our highly capable students Blake, Sheridan and Lachlan. Mr R. Lobb (Science / Agriculture Faculty)

YR 10 FOOD TECHNOLOGY CLASS

Recently in our Year 10 Food Technology class we have studied celebrations. During this topic we learned to plan out and create a birthday cake of our own choice. Many different techniques were employed using fondant and butter icing; including marbling, colouring, shaping, rolling and piping and attaching. My choice was to cook a cake which looks like a swimming pool. I found this idea after investigating cake celebrations on the internet. A difficulty which occurred during this procedure was that the coconut in the middle of the pool which symbolized the water, was planned to be blue jelly. We overcame the problem by colouring coconut to suit the theme as no blue jelly was ordered. We have had lots of fun and are now transferring our skills to traditional Christmas cakes with a more modern theme to reflect today’s trends in cake decorating.

Welcome to PDHPE The PDHPE staff welcomes David Jacobs to the world of teaching. He is currently doing a block replacing Mrs Jacobs. Yes, that’s his mum. Mrs Jacobs is visiting family in America and will be back at the end of next week. Mr Jacobs is an ex student of Melville High and has many ties with the local community, especially families of Crescent Head students. He has been a major asset to the PDHPE staff and he has worked extremely well with students in his classes. We will see Mr Jacobs return to Melville in 2013. Apology to Mitchell My apologies to Mitchell of Year 11 who I left out of the North Coast representatives list in the last Melville Matters. Mitchell represented the North Coast in athletics this year. He competed in the pentathlon and came 16th. Well done. Girls 14 years cricket We played Camden Haven recently in the North Coast KO draw. The girls were very unlucky to lose by 1 run. It was that close. Chloe batted well and scored the majority of our runs. The team consisted of:- Carmen, Tayla, Ellis, Bindii, Emma, Maddison, Matilda, Maddie, Chloe, Shianna, Caitlin, Miller, Sheriln and Siobhan. Thanks to Liam for his assistance on the day and to Mr Hoy for taking the

team.
