Dear Parents and Students One of the 16 Habits of Mind we seek to encourage in ourselves and our students is the ability to respond with wonderment and awe.

“Wonder is God’s way of getting our attention.

Wonder is not the beginning of doubt.

Wonder is the beginning of understanding the things that are really important in life.

Learning something leaves us different than we were before we knew it.

Learning is our lifeline to the fullness of ourselves. ‘We wake, if ever at all,’ Annie Dillard writes, ‘to mystery’.

To learn more about life is to learn more about God.

If the great Mystery of Life is God, then the more we learn about its little mysteries, the more we know about the God-life itself.”

Joan Chittister “The Art of Life”

“Those who can no longer pause to wonder And stand rapt in awe are as good as dead; Their eyes are closed” Albert Einstein

Art News It is a busy week in the Art Department as we prepare for our Annual Student Art Show on Thursday 17

October, 3.30pm-

7.00pm in the Mulwith Art Area. Works from Terms One and Two have come out of storage in preparation for what is shaping up to be a wonderful celebration of the creativity of our Art Students from Years Eight to Twelve. We look forward to welcoming you.

This week’s showcased artworks were produced by Year Ten Art Students in Term Three. Their task was to create a symbolic sculptural form that reflected their identity.

Career News Volunteer work available for Year 10 – 12 students

As many of you are aware, The Trading Circle is a Not For Profit, Ethical and Fair Trade organisation empowering women to

trade out of poverty. Everyone volunteers for a different reason - to gain experience, give back to the community, share a

around the corner, it is a busy time of year and we are looking for volunteers to help out in our store at Paddington with

customer service, gift wrapping, unpacking stock, merchandising, preparing merchandise for events or helping at events if

you choose. Shopping and Volunteering with The Trading Circle makes a real difference to improving the lives of women

Congratulations Lillian Yee of Year 8 Gold recently was awarded Highly Commended in the state-wide QIEU Literary Competition. Her teacher is Mrs Rosemary O’Neill. We would like to congratulate Lillian on her excellence in writing poetry.

My place is the library

I am completely bored, being with my mum

Searching for shirts on the rack,

Completely bored, asking for the time,

Reminding me of the patience I lack.

So I decide to search for some excitement

And to the lanes of CDs I go

I look at the covers and names of music

Though I am not moved notes high or low.

I walk to the lanes of DVDs of new and old

Genres of all kinds, of all chances.

But leave as soon gossiping girls

Crowd around ‘One Direction’ and vampire romances.

I don’t go and browse for anything else

For I know the place of my own.

Where no one cares if I like to be quiet

Or be concerned if I just want to be alone.

I go to a place where books are stacked

In tall pillars and placed in piles

In every single size every colour

From thin postcards to thick paving tiles.

I take one book off a shelf

And open to the very first page

I feel its dry crisp paper and read the words

Which are written with passion or rage.

Later I bring the book closer,

My eyes widening in incredible wonder

The author has twisted the book in half.

Was it the right thing I ponder?

I am then ripped away from the world

of astonishing impossible things

“We have to leave now.” My mother’s voice

Into my wonderful world sings.

I take one last breath of the book’s parchment smell

and put it on the shelf with sighs

This is my place, my refuge, my home.

This is where my heart truly lies.

This Week’s Draw - Round 5

Open A vs Lourdes Hill College, at Lourdes Hill, Hawthorne (bus)

Open B vs Mt St Michael’s at Mt St Michael’s, Ashgrove (bus)

Intermediate A Gold (10’s) vs Our Lady’s College at Loreto (MWC)

Intermediate A Blue (9’s) vs Lourdes Hill College at Lourdes Hill, Hawthorne (bus)

Junior A vs Mt Alvernia at Loreto (outside court)

Results: Round 4

Open A defeated Mt Alvernia 19 to 12

Loreto continued to play strong basketball and were matched up against a very physical side. Accuracy of shooting has

improved and defence was outstanding this week. It was pleasing to secure the first win of the season as all girls have

worked hard in training and matches to develop their individual and team skills.

Open B had a Bye

Intermediate A (Gold) match to be played next week.

Intermediate A (Blue) defeated Our Lady’s College 37 to 20

Our Lady’s College played a physical game and contested strongly for the ball. Loreto were more skilled in attack and were

able to score from strong drives to the basket and successful lay ups. Each quarter Loreto were able to build upon their lead

and continued to maintain pressure in defence. Zoe Sever, Vicky Flores, Brigitte Mastry and Laura Schenk were dominant

this week.

Junior A were defeated by Mt St Michael’s 31 to 29

This was a disappointing loss for Loreto as they held the lead for the majority of the match. Looking to secure their first win of

the season, Loreto combined well to produce strong scoring opportunities. Unfortunately, with only minutes remaining

Mt.St.Michael’s were able to shoot several quick baskets to claim victory. Improved decisions in shot selection and ball

security would have enabled Loreto to win this match.

Waterpolo

The girls had their first water polo games this week. The venue for all teams is at the Somerville House swimming pool. Each player MUST be at the venue 30 minutes prior to the game, with full sports uniform, togs, cap and mouth guard.

PLEASE NOTE: The drawer for this week’s game has not been published as yet. Please refer to the Brisbane Waterpolo Association’s website—under latest drawer / Junior Girls Somerville.

Results: 12 October Under 13 - had a slow start against the Mermaids going down 2 – 0 in the first quarter. However they came back really strongly with an end score of 10-5 showing great promise for the rest of the season. Coach: Oliver Chamber Under 14 - Last Saturday’s game was a great start to the season for the under 14 girls’ waterpolo team. Despite the loss of 10-3 to Mt St Michaels the girls played an awesome first game, and for many of them it was their first game of waterpolo ever. I am looking forward to developing the girls’ skills through the rest of the season. Coach: Caitlyn Chambers Under 15 - Unfortunately we were missing part of the team to the All Schools Touch competition. Given the circumstances they played a good game. It was a good effort and some superb goals in the fourth quarter put the team on track for a good season. Coach: Oliver Chamber Under 16 - girls started off the season well with a solid win over BGGS (last year’s grand final winners). The score was 11-1, a great win for the first game. The girls were a little rusty but with some hard training sessions the girls will display an improvement. Coach: James Duffy Under 18 - also had a great win against Mt St Michaels winning 11- 5. Most of the girls are first time players and seemed to pick up the sport relatively quickly, showing great promise for the season. Coach: James Duffy Waterpolo training for Fitness - TERM 4 All girls are invited to attend swim training sessions at the Loreto pool in preparation for the 2014 waterpolo season. These sessions are held on Tuesday and Thursday morning from 6.45am to 8.00am. Please register at the sports notice board. There is no cost for the swim sessions. MAJESTIC PARK RUNNING: Any girls are welcome to join the running training sessions with Andrew Lulham and Clare Geraghty on Monday and Tuesday afternoon from 3.30pm to 4.45pm and Thursday morning from 6.45am to 8.00am. Results: Round 4 Open A—Bye Open B vs Mt Alvernia Lost 1-3 This was an upsetting loss as the team played well with strong attack and defence. However, a few small mistakes created

holes in our defence giving the opposition the advantage. Well done, Vania! Her touchdown was deserved.

Inter A vs St John Fisher This game will be played on Tuesday 15 October at St John’s as the players were on camp last Wednesday. Inter B vs Lourdes Hill Won 10-2 A much improved game with players showing ‘up and in’ defensive pressure. There was a lot of penetrative movement in attack that utilised the width more effectively. Excellent game from Beth Kassulke! Inter C 1 vs MSM Won 9-0 A wonderful win! The nil score line was particularly pleasing. Congratulations on a fantastic team effort with only two

substitutions. Great games from Leah Carey, McKenna Buckley and Georgia Burge.

Inter C 2 vs LHC Won 4-0

Great effort from the players was noted in this game. Speed and line breaks were consistent, as was the unified line defence.

Inter D vs St John Fisher Lost 0-4

All players started well, playing strongly. Attack was pleasing. Great games- especially from Georgia Williams and Jessica

Aitken. All players need to talk in defence to cover all attacking plays.

Junior A vs Mt Alvernia Won 3-2

Great comeback late in the second half to score two touchdowns. Defence was set less than 5m so it was initially difficult to

achieve consistency. Wonderful games from Kate Mednis and Anna McGuckin!

Junior B vs San Sisto Lost 3-11

Increased focus in games and training is needed to work on defensive patterns. A great touchdown from Gabbi Miotti!

All Schools Touch Football Championships Loreto competed at the All Schools event at White’s Hill for the first time from Thursday 10 to Sunday 13 October and the results were pleasing. Playing in the Junior Girls Division, nine Year 9 students and one Year 8 played the first three games until the four Year 10 players had returned from camp and joined the team for the Friday afternoon match. This was particularly noteworthy as most teams consisted mainly of Year 10 players. In the Junior Girls division there were 65 teams in nine playing pools. In our Pool: Day 1: Loreto defeated Elanora 7-1 Loreto defeated Mt Gravatt 10-2 Day 2: Loreto drew with Sheldon 2-2 Loreto defeated Chancellor 4-3 Day 3: Loreto lost to Kirwan 2-5 Loreto defeated Calvary Christian 8-0 These results placed us equal second in our Pool but our ‘for and against ‘result relegated us to third and we missed out on progressing to the Finals series. All players worked extremely well on field and all commented on how much they had learnt over the three days. Co-Captains Madison Witt and Charlotte Grigson were impressive as leaders on and off the field. Congratulations to Brittany Ryan, Megan Laycock, Georgia Magub, Emily Littleton, Beth Kassulke, Farren Buckly, Zoe McNamee, Bridget Thelander, Matilda Ingram, Christina Stephanos, Julia Palmer and Tiaan Smith. Thanks to Mrs Meg Stevens for managing the team on Thursday and Friday morning and to Tanya McGovern for coaching on these days and her continued support for the rest of the championships. Particular thanks to David Witt for his coaching in preparing the team over the last seven weeks – his dedication to Touch Football at Loreto is greatly appreciated. Thanks to facilities staff Bill Bradic and Mark Onions for erecting the Loreto tent to provide much needed shade. Finally I express my gratitude to all parents who assisted in the smooth running by supporting their daughters at this event and assisting in any task when required – a fantastic team effort all round! Notices/Bulletins Free Migration Advice

St Vincent de Paul Migration Advice Service (MAS) is a free visa advice service in the Gold Coast, Logan and Brisbane areas. This service commenced in February 2011. As its continuing commitment to the poor and needy, this advisory service is only offered to those who cannot afford a migration agent/lawyer. Evidence of this circumstance must be demonstrated before an appointment can be arranged. The service is also offered on the first Saturday of each month (10am-1pm) at Woodridge, Logan and the third Saturday of each month (10am-1pm) at Springhill, Brisbane. The facility is serviced by volunteers, and the advice is provided by qualified migration agents. Consultations will strictly be by appointment on a first come first serve basis as SVDP MAS can only see 4 clients in one session. For details and make an appointment, please call 048 7347 858 between 6.00pm and 9.00pm, Monday to Friday (except public holidays).

Room to Read Dinner

Support the Room to Read Dinner this Friday evening at 6.30pm in the Mary Ward Centre. Room to Read is an inspiring organisation. Between 2010 and 2013, the founder, John Wood, established 10,000 libraries in Asia and African schools—more than Starbucks Coffee shops. Girls’ education is especially important and what could be closer to the Mary Ward philosophy? Is there any wonder that I’ve been inspired to volunteer with them. Because of the close alignment of values, Loreto is donating the Mary Ward Centre for a Sri Lankan dinner to raise money for Sri Lankan girls’ education. Thus, admission for Loreto people has been reduced to $35 per person. Enjoy Sri Lankan dancers and Ashton’s Circus acts, as well as a possibility of winning great prizes; a weekend at Coolum, High Tea at the Hilton, Thai cooking classes, gym membership and many more. I would love to see you there. Book www.trybooking.com/DPLB Kathy Hedemann
