winds and lots of sailing. We took our guests onthe full tour of the BVI and visited favoritespots such as Cam Bay on Great Camanoe andEustatia Sound where they were in awe at thenumber of fish, rays and turtles that they saw.

As all good things do, the trip came to anend and it was time to say goodbye. Jokinglymy husband and I mused whether the time-honored parting comment would come forth.Sure enough and happy to oblige, one of ournew friends said, “you guys are so lucky, sail-ing around the islands in the Caribbean – that’snot work, that’s a paid holiday”!

We laughed, as ironically we don’t actuallywork as crew on-board yachts anymore, and asany other crew will gladly tell you, it’s not a jobfor the faint hearted. However there is a senseof satisfaction and a strong sense of accomplish-ment that you get at the end of a charter that

few vocations can give you.Perhaps it’s the fact that chartersmostly go well – sometimesagainst the odds, and the guestsleave happy and relaxed. Whoknows what it is – but unless I wasterribly mistaken – there was apart of both of us that was morethan a little bit sad to say goodbyeto our charter days.

I was recently lucky enough to help out ona one-off charter on board a private yacht thatmy husband had agreed to run for some friendsof ours. We had run charter yachts in the past, but I had not been a charter chef for some yearsso this was going to be an interesting challenge.

We both worked hard prior to the guestsarriving on board to make sure everything wasship shape and the towels were swan shaped. But more so, I was desperately trying to getmyself back into charter chef mode, I could notunderstand how I could have done this somany times and now seemed to have forgottenthe fundamentals of cooking. It shouldn’t bepossible.

So, the moment arrived and off we went tomeet our guests. They could not have beenfriendlier and immediately we all just clicked. After the initial excitement, I decided it wastime to introduce myself to thegalley and start to prepare a gour-met dinner for seven whilst look-ing like an oasis of calm. Easiersaid than done when you havejust made a lumpy roux andburned the crème brulee.

Of course, everything wasfine, and we had a wonderfulweek of glorious weather, good

Fans of offbeat comedies will enjoy this film that follows a 16-year-old boy, Craig Gilner (Keir Gilchrist, United States of Tara),who checks himself into a psychiatric ward after contemplating ajump off the Brooklyn Bridge. What’s Craig so depressed about? For one, he’s in love with his best friend’s girlfriend, and loomingover his head is a blank application for a prestigious summerschool. Dr. Mahmoud (The Daily Show’s Aasif Mandvi) checks himin for a one-week stay in the adult pysch ward of the hospital, where Craig realizes his problems are blessings compared to theother patients.

The ever-hilarious Zach Galifinakis plays Bobby, a patient whoacts more like he’s on vacation and masquerades as a doctor to taketrips to the ER for “the good coffee.” Bobby quickly shows Craigthe ropes and talks about his imminent release to a group home, butof course, there’s more to Bobby than he lets on.

The only other teen patient in the psych ward just happens to be an attractive girl named Noelle(Emma Roberts, Nancy Drew), who takes a liking to Craig after witnessing him show kindness andcompassion towards Bobby.

It’s Kind of a Funny Story lives up to its name, putting a mostly-humorous spin on a tale full oftragic characters. The weeklong stay is full of visits from Craig’s unsuspecting family and friends, shocked at his sudden hospitalization. But as Craig learns more about the background of Bobby,Noelle and the other patients of the psych ward, he comes to realizations about his own life – espe-cially the people and things that really matter most.

Dear Koren,My husband had two children before we got

married and he wants them to come and live with us.He and I only have one child together and that isgood enough for me. When his children come to visit,I am miserable as they are not well brought up. Heand I argue about them and we end up having prob-lems. How should I deal with this?–Concerned

Dear Concerned,If when you got married there was no

agreement for his children to live with you, then he should not bring them without yourconsent; that would be quite unfair. If however,he has very good reason for asking, then the sit-uation would warrant a bit more understand-ing on your part.

If their mom died, had to move to anothercountry or is incapable of raising them proper-ly, then as their father, he might not have anychoice but to act in their best interest. Imagine ifsomething were to happen to you to changeyour circumstances, you would probably wantthe father of your child to take care of him/her.

It is an admirable thing for a father to actlike a father and not just a sperm donor. Being afather means providing for the child’s necessi-ties; being a good role model, loving them andpreparing them for life.

You can outright refuse to let him bringthem, but that might cause endless friction inyour marriage and he might decide to leave tobe with his children if you force him to make achoice between you and them.

You can allow them to come under certain

conditions; youmust have somesay in their disci-pline. I don’tknow how old they are, but you both wouldhave to sit with them and lay down someground rules and ensure that you are firm, con-sistent, fair and set good boundaries.

It can’t be all bad. As irritable as theirbehaviour can be, children can be very sweetand helpful and can bring joy into the home.Maybe God has placed you in this position tomake a positive difference in their lives. Thinkof how proud you will feel in a few years whenthey have grown up and turned out well, just toknow that you had a hand in it.
