Hello wonderful families of Lucile Erwin Middle
School
Before Spring Break 2017 we had our parent teacher
conferences I walked through and saw our students
staff and parents engaged in great conversations
about the quality of work produced by our students
We would love it if you gave us some feedback in order
to help us continue the great parts of conferences and
improve on other parts If you did not fill out a
feedback sheet at conferences please take a few
minutes and fill out the survey at this link httpbitlyLEMSSPRING17

Photography on Exhibit
Nineteen Erwin students will have their photography on exhibit in downtown Loveland in April
These students were part of the annual district-wide GT photo project under the mentorship of
local artist Bob Campagna
Students in this workshop studied various principles of photography then spent a day in the field
(various locations around the region) taking dozens of actual black-and-white film photographs
That was followed by a day of creativity in the ArtWorks Loveland darkroom creating one of a
kind works of art Each student created one exhibit printed on Ilford fiber glossy paper dry-
mounted and custom matted and framed to museum standards
Please try to view the exhibit in the south gallery at ArtWorks Loveland between April 5 and
April 28 Better yet join us for the open house on the evening of Tuesday April 18 visit with
student artists about their work and hear students from each of the six middle schools speak
about their experiences in the workshop While you are there be sure to look for the piece by
Erwin principal Tim Ridder who accompanied students on the photo outing and has created his
own exhibit piece

Traveling Wildcats 2017 From Rome to Athens
Over spring break a group of our Erwin Wildcats traveled to Italy and Greece This was the trip of
a lifetime Our Wildcats represented Erwin with aplomb leaving me more impressed with them
each day They connected what they had learned in school about the ancient civilizations and
marveled at the places they were able to see They displayed such maturity and wonder I could not
have been more proud of our Erwin students Each student truly embraced this experience Our
days were packed with activities and time to experience the areas on our own Below is a snippet of
our trip
We had an amazing time exploring Rome We walked the streets of the ancient Romans under
umbrella trees while we visited the Roman Forum and the Coliseum Students made a wish to
return to Rome by throwing coins into the Trevi Fountain and marveled at the architecture and art
work while visiting the Vatican
We said good bye to Rome and headed south to Pompeii where we traveled back in time to 79 AD
when Mount Vesuvius erupted We were able to imagine ourselves walking down the streets of
Pompeii stopping at the Spa or for a bite to eat Students marveled at the idea that this ancient
civilization had many of the creature comforts we have today
We departed Pompeii for a night ferry to carry us across the sea to Greece Traveling and sleeping
on a boat was a first for most of our students and they really enjoyed it We were able to watch the
beautiful Grecian coast line and learn some yoga on the top deck
Once in Greece we traveled to Olympia where we were able to enjoy a small town before tourist
season hits We went on a group run with amazing views and made a few four legged friends along
the way Then we had the opportunity to visit the site of the original Olympic Games ndash circa 776
BCE Our Wildcats even did the 200 meter dash on the original grounds of the very first 200 meter
dash
After Olympia our next stop was Mycenae home of Agamemnonrsquos castle (Helen of Troy
anyone) This UNESCO World Heritage Site has been standing since 3000 BCE Students were
able to walk the paths of the ancient Mycenaeans and take in the view from the top of the
fortress It was easy to see why the Mycenaeans chose this spot as their defensive seat
Moving from Mycenae we headed to Athens In Athens we hit all the top sites including of course
the Parthenon We put our feet in the Aegean Ocean and learned traditional Greek dances during a
Greek evening It was the perfect close to our adventures together

National Junior Honor Society
Have you been worried that your student did not receive an invitation to apply for membership in
NJHS Donrsquot worry You didnrsquot miss a critical message The Erwin chapter of the National
Junior Honor Society has changed the timing of its membership application process Many of you
will remember that we traditionally have invited sixth and seventh grade students to apply for
membership early in second semester Due to a change in the districtrsquos grading process
(specifically that core classes are graded on a year -long basis) such invitations will now be
issued in the fall Students who end their sixth or seventh grade year at Erwin with a cumulative
middle school grade point average of at least 35 will be invited to apply for membership
A faculty committee will evaluate each application on the basis of the studentrsquos evidence of
leadership service citizenship and character The most common reason students are turned
down for membership is inadequate evidence of service This means the summer will provide the
perfect opportunity for students to go out and invest hours of service in their community They
should keep track of dates hours and organization information (specifically the name and
contact information of the person who could attest to their volunteer work)
If you have any questions about the revised process please contact NJHS sponsor Sue Teumer or
LEMS principal Tim Ridder

A Message from LEMS Health and Wellness Committee -Nutrition and
Healthy Foods The focus for this month from the Health and Wellness
committee is Nutrition and Healthy FOODS Get out and enjoy the
beautiful change in the weather and eat healthy
Apples Yes it can keep the doctor away or at least the memory doctor
Apples also reduce anxiety Another study showed students who eat an
apple at lunch show as much as a 7 point increase in test scores during
afternoon exams
Blueberries The darling of the fruit world Blueberries are naturersquos brain packages There are
more antioxidants in 1 blueberry than in 1 super-packed supplement These nutrients in
blueberries show the ability to greatly improve memory verbal comprehension decision making
and numerical ability
Nuts Packed with nutrients fats and a tiny bit of carbs these foods are naturersquos energy
