“Yes, I will listen to you.”Become an adult who is safe to talk to.

Dear School Counselors (or any adult who wants to listen),

School counselors, regardless of personal views, must become individuals who listen with empathy. We must model correct behavior, show kindness, and demonstrate compassion. Also, we need to encourage other adults to do so.

Please become a part of my I Listen movement.

I Listen is a free program for grades 4-6. I am creating 10 lessons covering empathy, compassion, friendship, giving, talking, reasoning, working, pain, freedom, and self-knowledge. These lessons will align to ASCA standards for use in small group or classroom guidance.

My goal is to help students learn good citizenship skills.

I have chosen to make a 3-4 part series on lying. This is the 2nd lesson in the series. It is important that our young people understand the difference between the truth and an “alternate truth”. An alter-nate truth is a lie. As a responsible adults we must not allow young people to use this as an “out”.

These lessons are not only for counselors! Anyone who works with young people are more than welcome to use this program. Please help me by using word of mouth to share these materials.

Rise up. Become a beacon of hope and light in your school and your community.

BE SOMEONE WHO IS NOT AFRAID TO LISTEN AND NOT AFRAID TO SPEAK OUT!

Sincerely,

Dr. Poppy Moon, ProfessorUniversity of West [email protected]

CITIZENSHIPTEACHINGMOMENTS

Throughout the lesson, you get to work your counselor magic.

Notice that I am starting to add (Teaching Moments) in the lesson. Regardless of the students’ behavior, you must give good citizenship reminders. It may seem redundant, but this is how we teach skills. Going over them again, again, and again. Remember how our par-ents drilled “Yes mam, and Yes sir” into our minds? It is the same thing.

If the kids say, “You already told us that!” You respond with, “Great! Then you know how to behave, so I will be watching you model good citizenship for the class. Since we are learning, I may repeat some-thing many, many times! If you are familiar with these rules, start sharing them with your friends. Maybe you could tell the younger children on the bus about what you have learned! It is important to help others learn good citizenship skills!

Some of your students may have specific questions about lying. Older students are aware that the President has lied. Depending on your students age and level of understanding, you can have this conversation.

Before you do this, read the free publication Let’s Talk! Discussing Race, Racism and Other Difficult Topics With Students. http://www.tolerance.org/lets-talk

Here are some discussion questions.

* What does the President do?

* Why is it VERY important for the President NOT to lie?

Touch on these issues: * Trust is important in communication. * The president must be able to communicate effectively with many different countries and people. * Can we feel safe if the president lies?

(Allow student to respectfully (teaching moment) share their concerns).

* Is it ok for us to lie if the president lies? * Why must we continue to be good citizens even if the President does not appear to be trustworthy?

Read the story (included) until you can tell it without having to look at the paper. Reading from the paper is boring, and makes the story dull. Make it come to life! Act out the dialogue between George and his father.

OPENER:

(Teaching Moment) Before you start, remind students to be good citizens while an adult is teaching. Go over listening skills, body placement, etc. Tell them you expect them to be quiet and not to raise their hand during the story. Tell them they will be allowed questions at the end of the story.

Tell the story. Answer any questions at the end.

(Teaching Moment) Explain how good citizens raise their hand and wait to be called on. When someone is called on, good citizens place their hands in their lap and turn to the student asking the question. Remind students not to blurt out, even if they want to add a comment. Discussion:

* What did George get for his birthday?* What was he doing with the hatchet? * What is an honest mistake?* Have you, like George, ever done something that was an “honest mistake”?

* George’s father was angry, but he did not punish George. In fact, he was proud of him! Tell me more about that!

CLOSURE:

Ask, “What is one thing you have learned about truth?”

The Cherry TreeM.L. Weems

When George Washington was about six years old, he was made the wealthy master of a hatchet of which, like most little boys, he was extremely fond. He went about chopping everything that came his way.

One day, as he wandered about the garden amusing himself by hacking his mother’s pea- sticks, he found a beautiful, young English cherry tree, of which his father was most proud. He tried the edge of his hatchet on the trunk of the tree and barked it so that it died.

Some time after this, his father discovered what had happened to his favorite tree. He came into the house in great anger, and demanded to know who the mischievous person was who had cut away the bark. Nobody could tell him anything about it.

Just then George, with his little hatchet, came into the room.

“George,” said his father, “do you know who has killed my beautiful little cherry tree yonder in the garden? I would not have taken five guineas for it!”

This was a hard question to answer, and for a moment. George was staggered by it, but quickly recovering himself he cried: --

“I cannot tell a lie, father, you know I cannot tell a lie! I did cut it with my little hatchet.”

The anger died out of his father’s face, and taking the boy tenderly in his arms, he said: --

“My son, that you should not be afraid to tell the truth is more to me than a thousand trees! yes, though they were blossomed with silver and had leaves of the purest gold!”
