2018’s are here!

FEBRUARY FROM THE HEART February is the month when hearts appear everywhere around us, heralding the annual celebration of Valentine’s Day. Fortunately, those visuals are most often rendered in their elegant, ideographic shape rather than via their less stylized, anatomically correct form.

Historically, St. Valentine, whom the day commemorates, put a ne point on the notion that love hurts, beheaded by Roman Emperor Claudius II for marrying couples despite a royal decree prohibiting this sacrament because the emper-or believed that single men were presumed more available for soldiery in his legions. Perhaps even today we may lament Valentine’s severe execution (… of marriages). Just joking; don’t hate mail me.

History and levity aside, February may also draw our attention to other, more factual matters of the heart. According to fairly recent American Heart Association statistics, cardiovascular disease, is related to nearly 800,000 deaths annually in the America, that’s about one of three deaths in the US. On average, 2,200 Americans die of cardiovascular disease daily, and that’s about one death every 40 seconds. Roughly 92 million American adults are living with cardiovascular disease or the after-eects of stroke. CDC (Center for Disease Control) statistics, additionally note that heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women, and the CDC accounts that heart disease is the underlying cause for heart attacks in America. The CDC also reports that 525,000 heart attacks annually are the rst heart attacks experienced by those suering them.

How do we mitigate a heart ache? Not the sort of emotional origins (although remedies for all manner of heart distress are demonstrably similar), but especially heart disease and increased risk of heart attack due to excess weight or genetic predisposition may be diminished by consistent exercise and better nutrition. One need look no further than a few quick

keystrokes on any search engine to see the body of evidence validating that regular exercise and better nutrition helps improve your heart health.

The simple matter of self-education, however, is generally not what motivates people to commit to improve their ongoing healthy lifestyle habits. How then, do we get over the motiva-tional hurdles keeping us from enjoying longer lives and better health for our allotment of days? Perhaps returning to the emotional or “motivational heart” is a fair place to start. With whom are most of your seles taken? If you don’t obsess over seles, who do you spend time with? Perhaps this is a family member, a close friend, or someone in your immediate circle of relationships who could become an accountability partner. As a tness professional with a background in front-line service delivery including coaching sports teams and being a certied personal trainer, I’ve seen many paradigms of success in three decades of experience. Over the years I’ve even seen my share of those exceptional individuals who are self-motivated examples for everyone else. They are the exception, not the norm (hence: “exceptional”). Then there is… the rest of the population.

The rest of us nd our motivation in mutual support networks which may be comprised of either old friends or new friends who we make when we nd a community supporting healthy

lifestyles. I’ve written about support networks previously, those ranging from AA, to various other groups available to anyone for many forms of addiction. The ecacy of group support networks is empirical.

So to help your heart both physio-logically and emotionally (again, there’s a body of research linking these) I hope you’ll consider nding an accountability partner or support group to which you may commit this February and improve your collective lifestyles by helping each other commit to regular, ongoing exercise (and ideally, to better nutrition too), in

whatever form or wherever you may nd your accountability partner or network. Find something of mutual interest or just nd something that you’re both willing to at least try and - just do it!

To get started, just get started. Perhaps don’t even initially commit to more than the rst one, then the next one, two or three meeting times, perhaps one month at the outmost. Don’t overwhelm yourself by overcommitting; remember those broken, New Year’s resolutions? Heard of how you eat a metaphorical elephant? One bite at a time? Start with small, achievable steps. One after the other. One bite at a time- no one can eat the elephant at one sitting. Again- try something, anything, one time, then two; and again- just do it!!

If you’re in search of options, I hope you’ll consider the Y and please bring a friend to help keep each other accountable. Or make new friends in one of our numerous of group exercise classes, small group training classes, or other healthy lifestyles programs. I hope to see you soon at the Y to learn how we may help you, help your heart, motivate you, and support you to begin your new lifestyle of more enjoyable, healthier days, and perhaps adding to the number of those.

Happy Valentine’s Day; here’s to your health!

Congratulations to Montebello Police Department (MPD) Captain Brad Keller on his recent graduation from the FBI National Academy program at Quantico, Virginia. Keller was one of 221 graduates representing law enforcement agencies from the United States, 20 countries, three military organiza-tions and four federal civilian organizations. Graduation ceremony speakers included President Donald J. Trump, Attor-ney General Je Sessions, and FBI Director Christopher Wray. Those selected for the training are nominated by the head of the agency they represent and on average have 21 years of law enforcement experience. The Academy oers attendees 11 weeks of coursework taught by FBI instructors, special agents and others, many known internationally in their elds of exper-tise. "Courses included leadership, legal issues facing law enforce-ment, employment law, media, physical tness and nutrition," said Keller. "As seasoned law enforcement ocers, we also learned from each other as well as the instructors."

MPD CAPTAIN GRADUATES FROM FBI ACADEMY

Keller becomes the rst MPD ocer to graduate from the Academy. “I am proud to have been selected to attend this prestigious program," he said. "Regardless of how long one has been in a leadership role, there is always room for improvement. Expo-sure to law enforcement leaders from around the world was a great experience and will make me a more eective leader. Strong and eective leadership at the top will trickle down through the MPD ranks ultimately benetting the Montebello community." Keller said the many contacts he made at the Academy "are great resources that can be called upon for advice in any situation and will benet our great police department and the wonderful community I have been privileged to serve for nearly 27 years." "The experience is one I will never forget," he said. "Being around 221 law enforcement professionals and instruction sta was a tremendous opportunity. The bond we created is one that will not diminish over time. My hope is my attendance will pave the way for other Montebello police executives to attend the Academy."

For many, Valentine’s Day is a day of love and celebration, while for others it is just another corporate holiday. Whether you celebrate or not, you are bound to be inundated with symbols of flowers, chocolate, and affection pretty much everywhere you go throughout this month. Although cliche, the most common display of love and commitment on this day is the marriage proposal. The American Express Spending and Saving Tracker reported that in 2013 alone 6 million people either expected or planned a marriage proposal. Many couples get engaged and pretty soon embark on the wedding planning journey, going full speed ahead without having what should be one of the most important talks about financial affairs - - should they sign a premarital agreement? For some reason or another, one of them may be fearful of mentioning the proverbial “elephant in the room.” There are many misconceptions about these agreements and whether or not they have to do with ‘trust’. The primary reason usually is that many couples feel that they do not require an agreement because their marriage will last a lifetime, or moreover that they do not have enough assets. Celebrity rapper Kanye West rhymed about one in his song, and Dodger owner Frank McCourt cried about his day in court over his. Ultimately, the the most common misconception about premarital agreements is that only super wealthy people require one; and that is not always the case.

A prenuptial agreement, aka ‘prenup’, is a contract entered into by a couple before they marry concerning the ownership of their respective assets and liabilities should the marriage dissolve. A prenuptial agreement can simply clarify the financial rights and responsibilities of each party during the marriage and the distribution of proper-ty in the case of divorce or death. You can contract to your actions during marriage and to the right “to buy, sell, use, transfer, exchange, abandon, lease, consume, expend, assign, create a security interest in, mortgage, encumber, dispose of, or

otherwise manage and control property during the marriage.” One of the advantag-es of having a prenup is protection from debt. It also enables you to dictate how you want your property to be passed on to children from a previous marriage. Further, the prenuptial agreement can indicate whether one of the parties is to receive alimo-ny or spousal support.

Unfortunately, there is no way to find out if your prenup is enforceable until a divorce is filed That being said, there are guidelines set out by the California legislature that if followed would make the prenup enforceable and upheld. The California Premari-tal Agreement Act (CPAA) of 2002 sets forth those guidelines. For an agreement to comply with the CPAA, it must be entered into voluntarily. The factors that a judge would weigh for voluntariness are as follows:

1) Independent Legal Review: The party who the prenup is proposed to had the opportunity to have an Independent Legal Counsel or was advised to seek legal counsel and waived that opportunity in writing.

2) 7-Day review Rule: The party must have at least seven calendar days between the date he or she was "first presented" with the agreement and advised to seek independent counsel at the time the prenup was signed.

3) Disclosures: If the party waives their right to consult with an attorney, there must have been a full disclosure of all disclosure of the property or financial obligations of the other party.

5) Unconscionability, Public Policy, and Other Factors: The person who was presented the prenup did not sign or act under duress, fraud, or undue influence. Also, the terms cannot violate public policy or impose any moral or religious conduct on the other party in agreement to enter the contract.

This is a small summary of what a court looks at when enforcing a prenup. In addition, a court may consider other relevant factors not contained in the CPAA when dealing with validity and enforceability issues. It is always wise to consult with an experienced family law attorney and for the person being presented with the prenup to consult as well.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Congratulations to Montebello Police Department Explorer Post #1034 for a great showing at the 20th Annual Chan-dler (Arizona) Tactical Competition held January 12-14, and securing one rst place event win. Since 1999, the Chandler Police Department has hosted the event considered to be one of the best youth law enforcement tactical competitions in the nation. "Our team of ve males and one female participated in a number of scenarios with Explorers from 65 posts and eight states," said Montebello Police Ocer and Explor-er Advisor Ernie Barron. "They take pride in representing the Montebello Police Department at each and every competi-tion." The team placed rst in the bungee pull challenge and third in Hogan's Alley, a

shoot/don't shoot scenario. Other events included hostage rescue, rapid response, pistol shoot, tubular assault, sniper challenge, vehicle assault and mari-juana eld raid. "Our Explorers trained hard to prepare for this competition," said Barron. "They did a great job and I couldn't be prouder of their hard work and dedication."

The Montebello Police Department Explorer program gives youth between the ages of 14 and 20 an opportunity to explore a career in law enforcement as they work side-by-side with law enforcement professionals. Explorers learn accountability, problem solving, leadership skills and teamwork while fostering self-condence and social development skills. The community benets through the extra manpower Explorers provide at city-sponsored events throughout the year.

"We are always looking for interested teens to join the post," said Barron.

"The Montebello Police Department is very proud of its Explorers and congratulate them on a job well done," said Captain Luis Lopez.

THE BEST STROKE CARE, RIGHT HERE IN MONTEBELLO

When someone has a stroke, they need emergency medical care to help protect their brain from extensive damage. “Strokes can be devastating,” says Gautam Ganguly, MD, a Neurologist and the Stroke Program Medical Director for Beverly Hospital. “But the faster you treat them, the less likely you are to have a disabili-ty.”

That’s why Beverly Hospital has become a certified stroke center—a hospital where patients receive the best stroke care, as outlined by the American Stroke and American Heart Association. Living or working near such a center means ambulances don’t have to take you to a hospital further away.

As certified stroke center, Beverly has proven it can quickly diagnose an ischemic stroke and treat it with a drug called Tissue Plasminogen Activator (tPA), which dissolves the blood clots that cause most strokes. Hospital teams have only a short window of time to give the drug. “At Beverly, we have the equipment and the medical staff in place to accurately diagnose a stroke in a timely manner, and we are successfully treating many stroke patients with tPA,” Dr. Ganguly says.

Some other steps Beverly takes to make sure strokes are treated quickly are:• A dedicated stroke team that immediately responds when a stroke alert sounds in the hospital.

• That team includes neurologists and neurosurgeons who can treat stroke patients 24/7.

• Special stroke training to all staff members and specialized training to those who respond to strokes.

“We do all of this because we want our surrounding communities to have immediate access to the best stroke care, as soon as possible, near their home,” Dr. Ganguly says.

STROKE CARE PROVIDED AT BEVERLY HOSPITAL

Lilia Felix was receiving care at a local health center when she noticed that her face felt numb. At first she ignored it, thinking the lack of sensation would go away, but after 10 minutes she realized it was actually getting worse. As soon as she shared her symptoms, the center’s staff called 911 and she was quickly transported to the Emergency Care Center at Beverly Hospital. Her fears were well founded: Lilia was having a stroke.

“From the moment I arrived at Beverly to the moment I was told I was ready to go home, I received great care from everyone,” Lilia says. She adds with a grin, “the nursing staff was phenomena, but I must say I was a pretty good patient.” After four days at Beverly Hospital, Lilia was happy and ready to go home. She is a great example of someone who received proper stroke care as soon as possible. Lilia received the proper medications within the specified time frame and has very little neurological deficit only a few days after having a stroke. She is happy to share her experience so that others know they can count on Beverly Hospital for the best care.

You come back from a long day and you feel exhausted. The bed is there waiting for you and you sleep. The next day you wake up refreshed like a new person. Sleep can do wonders to people if done correctly. The recommended hours of sleeping for the average adult is 7 or more hours and increases the younger the person is.

Even though sleep is an essential part of everyday living, at least 30% of Ameri-can adults don’t get 7 or more hours of sleep. There are many reasons for this, such as work conditions, use of electronics during bed time, and inconsistent bedtimes. There are also sleeping conditions that leave people unable to sleep well. The major sleeping conditions that affect adults the most are insomnia and sleep apnea.

Insomnia can become chronic and affects 35% of adults. It occurs through factors such as stress and inconsistent sleep. Because of this, people who have insomnia find it hard to fall asleep, stay asleep, or wake up too early. It's import-ant to remember that being frustrated that you can't sleep can also add to the insomnia. Relax yourself with a book in dim light or a boring task to get your brain to relax and get into a mood to sleep.

Sleep apnea is a serious condition that may become fatal if not checked early. One of the ways to know its apnea is if you snore. Sleep apnea happens when the passageway in your throat is closed and prevents you from breathing. Your body, in an attempt to keep you alive, will make you snore or create choke-like sounds to get more air. It gets to the point where if you really don't get enough air, then your brain will wake you up. Imagine you waking up fatigued even though you had a whole night of rest. This is what sleep apnea can do.When a person doesn’t get enough sleep, they can also be at a higher risk for diabetes, cardiovascular disease, stroke, obesity, and depression. Sleeping is also one of the five major behaviors for preventing chronic disease. This makes sense; like your phone, you also need rest to recharge your batteries. Sleeping is a big deal not just for adults, but also teenagers, children, and toddlers as well. Teenagers and children perform higher academically when they get enough sleep at night. If a baby sleeps face down, it may lead to a baby’s death also known as Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

Sleeping healthy doesn’t have to be a mystery, here are some tips that you can do to sleep better:• Have the same sleep schedule. You should get up at the same time every day even if it’s during vacation or on weekends.• Make a bedtime that’s early enough for you to get your recommended hours of sleep.• Turn off all electronic devices 30 minutes before you sleep and avoid bright lights.• Don’t eat a huge meal and don't drink a lot of fluid before you sleep.• Avoid drinking caffeine and alcohol before you sleep.• Exercise regularly and maintain a healthy diet.

But if you find yourself having a hard time falling asleep, you can start a sleeping diary and record when you go to bed, go to sleep, wake up, get out of bed, take naps, exercise, and consume alcohol and caffeinated drinks.

You can talk to the friendly pharmacist and staff at the Prescription Shop about your sleep health! Here, you can use your sleep diary to show to the pharmacist and discuss strategies to better improve your sleep health, whether it is a chron-ic sleeping condition or just having some trouble sleeping. With a wide range of services and medications, you are sure to find what you need. Take control of your sleep with help from The Prescription Shop in Montebello.

CITY OF MONEBELLO IS A PRIME LOCATION FOR FILMING

Last year Montebello hosted a number of commer-cial, television and independent feature film shoots. The filming occurred at several City buildings as well as three Montebello schools.

The smoothly run shoots at the schools could not have happened without the assistance provided by Jeff Woods of the Montebello Unified School District.

The last commercial that shot in 2017 was done at Fire Station #55, which has been used as a location for many commercials and television shows. This time it was for the eye product “Preser Vision”. The commercial is still running on television now and it looks great.

The last filming of the year done in the City was for the top ten - television program “Criminal Minds”, which has been on CBS for 12 years. They chose the Montebello City Bus Lines garage as their location, filming occurred in several areas at the site. They also filmed on the streets surrounding the garage.

The producers, crew and actors all enjoyed their stay in Montebello; Tom Barrio the Director of the Monte-bello Transit Department and Jose Melendez the Supervisor of Maintenance at the Montebello Transit Department provided great support for the produc-tion and helped make the experience a terrific one for all involved. The program aired Wednesday, January 31, 2018 on CBS.

All of the companies that have come to Montebello have remarked about how professional the City staff is and how easy it is to get it done out here; this could not have happened without the skilled support from Danilo Batson, Assistant City Manager & Director of Public Works and David Sosnowski Director of Parks, Recreation and Community Service.

The companies also praised the tremendous assis-tance that they received from Captain Brad Keller and the entire Montebello Police Department.

After a wonderful conversation with Mayor Vanessa Delgado, they look forward to bringing more produc-tion and the money that it generates into the City in the year ahead.

OLMM SCHOOL TAKING EDUCATION OF THE MIND, BODY, AND SPIRIT TO NEW HEIGHTS!Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal School (OLMM) has taken education of the mind, body, and spirit to new heights. OLMM School is on their way to becoming a "Mindfulness" School. The school principal has incorporated mindfulness practices such as the generation of gratitude, good news sharing, and intention lists into their weekly faculty meetings. Consistent mindfulness practice across the school's faculty has facilitated enhanced collaboration, a stronger sense of a "village" approach, as well as increased positive mindsets in the teachers. Students in grades 4-8 have also been offered classes in mindfulness and medita-

Festiv-ities will begin at 6:00pm!

“It is our pleasure to honor such a great humani-tarian who was so instrumental and generous in ensuring the safe arrival of our DPs to America,” said Goharik Gabriel, Chairperson of the Commit-tee to Honor the Legacy of George Mardikian.

A statue honoring George Mardikian, through the initiation and efforts of community member Haig Kelegian, will be unveiled in a special ceremony at the Gala.

An estimated 25,000 Armenians were brought by ANCHA from Europe, the Middle East and even China to the United States from the 1940’s to the 1980’s.

tion. The school’s principal, pastor, and faculty are committed to ensuring a school-wide environment that promotes growth in the "whole person." The school principal, Ms. Moreno, is excited about this new School culture shift. "We have always offered the community a strong Christ-centered Catholic education, however by adding mindfulness, we are creating a stronger awareness and intention-ality to our day. It has been a beautiful experience to witness our youngest student, to our most experienced teachers, learn to breathe and "pause" throughout the day. I'm convinced that as the world outside of us seems to move faster and

faster, the better we need to use our "pause button" to generate happiness, success, and a service of good." If you would like to learn more about how you could be part of a movement towards mindful-ness, faith, and service, be sure to visit OLMM on Sunday, February 25th for their Open House, or online at olmmschool.com The school is inter-ested in families who are strongly interested in raising children to be happy, moral, intellectual, and service oriented leaders.

FEBRUARY 10 GALA TO HONOR THE LEGACY OF GEORGE MARDIKIAN

Mr. Mardikian was a major force in bringing thou-sands of Russian-Armenian “DP’s” to the United States from Germany after World War II. Among these "DP's" brought by ANCHA were the found-ers of Armenian Mesrobian School, which the Gala will benefit.

The DP community is an integral part of the Arme-nian community. You can see their lasting contri-

butions today through the Holy Cross Church, the Mesrobian School community, the Armenian Genocide Martyrs Monument, Bagramian Hall, and Tumanjian Hall, among other places. In fact, inescapably, the Chairperson of the Gala herself is a DP, and the Mesrobian School Principal, the entertainment, the MC, and even the caterer for the evening are all descendants of DPs!

The Gala will be preceded by a social hour and cocktail reception starting at 6:00PM. Dinner, music, dancing, and celebrations will start at 7:00PM and feature Master of Ceremonies David Mosikian and the evening’s entertainment, the Hosharian Band.

CSHM SENIOR APPOINTED TO CITY YOUTH COMMISSIONby Anne Donofrio-HolterContributing Writer

Congratulations to Cantwell-Sacred Heart of Mary (CSHM) senior Victoria Guerrero on her appointment to the Montebello Youth and Education Com-mission.

The Youth and Education Commission advises the city council on matters relating specifically to youth. This includes "activities oriented toward educa-tional, recreational, civic programs, and those activities that pertain to life issues. Thus, addressing the educational and leisure needs, creating awareness, and improving quality of life for our youth. The duties of the Commission shall also include the identification and publication of educa-tional opportunities for youth and the development of youth leadership."

"The opportunity presented itself two years ago, but I didn't have the confi-dence in myself to pursue it," said Guerrero. "When I was elected ASB presi-dent last year, I felt I was ready and capable of being a youth commissioner."

Guerrero selected CSHM Vice Principal Annette Chambers to administer the oath of office at the January 10 city council meeting because "she has played a huge role in my becoming who I am today. She gave me the cour-age to inspire others, especially the younger generation."

"As ASB president, a Youth Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, and captain of the girls' varsity basketball team, the teachers at CSHM have helped shape me into a well-rounded student with sharp leadership skills," said Guerrero. "A vigorous curriculum, with courses including AP biology and AP calculus, have allowed me to get ready to further my education at the college level."

As ASB president, Guerrero says her greatest accomplishment to date was an outpouring of school spirit as every teacher and student participated in her first-ever rally the beginning of the school year.

As a member of the Youth and Education Commission, Guerrero hopes to "instill city pride in the youth of Montebello. The same pride CSHM students have in being a Cardinal."

ARTIST OF THE MONTH: JOSHUA QUINTEROMy name is Joshua Adrian Quintero and I’m a local resident of Montebello. I am a writer, photographer and a Film Director. I have been watching movies since I could walk but I didn’t begin paying attention in full detail until a few years later when a movie called “Spider-man 2”directed by Sam Raimi rolled into theaters.

When the movie came out on DVD, I immediately glued myself into the special features because it always interested me on how the movie was made and being a huge superhero fan gave me an extra push. Watching the special features and hearing the direc-tor speak about the film and about the characters inspired me. I knew what I wanted to be when I was older.

When I reached high school I enrolled myself into the first class that let me hold a camera and that’s when I met a great teacher who taught me to shoot with a story and how to write my own characters. His name was Mr. Gonzalez otherwise known as Mr. G.

A few years later I met a man named Alex Linares who taught me everything I know. He not only became a mentor to me but a great friend. I currently work for Alex at his production business known as “Infocus by Alex”, in Downey with a couple of other Schurr High School Alumni, Scott Takai and Joseph Garcia.

I recently directed my first short film called “Buddy the Clown”, which was premiered at the Daily Brew Coffee Bar on January 12th. Buddy the clown is a short horror film about a woman who is enjoying her day with her daughter at the local park when suddenly the woman is confronted by this strange man who begins telling her an anecdote about a clown who has turned evil.

From this point on every time I finish another project my goal is to make people smile, laugh, and cry; anything to take them away from a busy stressful lifestyle, whether its 8 minutes or hour. If my films can put a smile on someone’s face then I know I did my job.

I want to thank God for these opportunities, and Terry at the Daily Brew Coffee Bar for letting us host the first Montebello film festival and to my friends, family, everyone in Restoration L.A and of course the Montebello community.

Owner of The Daily Brew, Terry Hunsucker with Joshua Adrian Quintero at the premier of Buddy the Clown.

THE REENACTMENT-EVENT OF THE BATTLE OF RIO SAN GABRIELOn January 6, 2018, the Montebello Historical Society (MHS) remembered the Battle of Rio San Gabriel fought on January 8, 1847 as part of the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). In short, the Battle of Rio San Gabriel took place on January 8, 1847 in the general area where Washington Blvd. and Bluff Rd. meet. Approxi-mately 600 American military forces marched from San Diego to present-day Montebello /Pico Rivera against 350 Californio-Mexican volunteer military forces to retake Pueblo de Los Angeles.

The reenactment-event was held at the Juan Matias Sanchez Adobe on a beautiful clear Saturday afternoon. There were historical exhibits, military and civilian reenactors, period musicians-dancers, arts/crafts for the children, food and coffee type-drinks. Support and atten-dance from the Montebello community and surrounding communities were very strong. The military-reenactors staged two battles between Californio-Mexican and American military. The guests learned about the battle, weaponry used, learned period-dances from the mid -19th century and participated in guid-ed-tours of the Adobe.

The Montebello Historical Society strives to preserve and share our local, state and national history with our community. We deeply believe that it is our duty to keep our history alive and do this by staging events where our community can learn and have a great time at the same time. “On behalf of the MHS, I want to thank all those that attended the Battle of Rio San Gabri-el event and members/volunteers that made the event successful,” said Club President Chris Vargas.

If you are interested in joining, please contact the Adobe on Saturdays from 12:00 00 to 4:00 p.m. or go to our website at http://montebello-historicalsociety.org/.

MPD COMMUNITY RELATIONS UNIT CELEBRATES ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY

L/R: Corporal Maria Chavez and Officer Scott Howard

by Anne Donofrio-HolterContributing Writer

The Montebello Police Department's Community Relations Unit (CRU) has just completed its first year of operation. Spearheaded by Sergeant Marc Marty, Corporal Maria Chavez and Corporal Scott Howard, the goal of the unit has been to actively engage the community's participation in

identifying problem areas in neighborhoods and working together towards solutions. "This past year has reminded us how great this community is and has inspired us to continue working hard to keep it that way," said Howard. The community has benefitted from the Unit in a multitude of ways, including the restart and expansion of Neighborhood Watch which promotes the benefits of neighbors looking out for each other and being aware of, and reporting, suspicious activity. "We also hosted our first-ever Facebook live virtual Neighborhood Watch meeting, answering questions from the community," said Chavez. According to Marty, the Montebello Police Department expanded its social media presence "connecting with millions of people last year and helping us spread the word about crime prevention and the hard work of our officers." For those that prefer not to follow social media, a commu-nity email list was established. The Unit spearheaded Montebello's most successful National Night Out last August, hosted a Child Safety Day with the Montebello-Commerce YMCA, and worked closely with city departments to facilitate community events. "We've been able to accomplish this with little to no impact to the City's general budget," said Marty. "Through our relationship with local busi-nesses, charities, and residents, we have been able to secure funding and material donations, for which we are very grateful." Plans for 2018 include the continued expansion of Neighborhood Watch, as well as Citizen's Patrol, along with ongoing outreach through social media, community emails, and Nixle. "Successful crime prevention depends on the community and the police working together," said Marty. "If you would like to speak with one of us about a neighborhood issue, call (323) 887-1313 and ask for the Com-munity Relations Unit."

MONTEBELLO REPORTER

by Van Ajemian

In the January column, we looked briefly at a possible idea to bring reve-nue into Montebello in order to compensate for voter rejection of Mea-sure “S” on last November's ballot.

It was mentioned that Pico Rivera might buy electricity from Montebello if we had solar farms. Now, Whittier's city council has approved a plan to buy electricity from other than Southern California Edison. (Edison would still have revenue from collecting a fee for use of its power lines.) So, potentially, another customer for Montebello.

Solar farms are already in use. The one major challenge for Montebello would be the financing, but I believe that our city, if focused on solar farms, would find a way to finance, then generate revenue.

Let us turn to an idea still in development.

Uber’s ‘Flying Cars’ Could Arrive in LA by 2020 — and Here’s What It’ll Be Like to Ride Onehttps://www.theverge.com/2017/11/8/16613228/uber-fly-ing-car-la-nasa-space-act

Uber has had a meteoric rise, just as Google has. Uber has money with which to experiment. That it would spend money to experiment in Los Angeles creates opportunities.

INSPIRING MONTEBELLOBe the change you wish

to see in Montebello.

What can we in Montebello do to benefit from Uber's experiment? Do we have money to invest? No. Do we have engineering expertise for infrastructure? Unknown. (Side note. Creating a database of expertise from among those who labor or live in Montebello was mentioned in a previous column. Now we have an example of where a database would be useful.) What, then, can we offer Uber, either to receive funds from it or from investors?

Property, whether it be parking lots, rooftops or vacant land. Such prop-erty would be used for landing, takeoff and parking of flying cars. Even if Uber did not take us up on our offer, we would generate some publicity for Montebello which might draw outside investor interest.

There are many opportunities and challenges before our city. It would not be fair to say, “The council and staff should prioritize this.” The better course would be for our city council to create, without delay, an ad hoc committee of residents to find out what could be done and how Uber and outside investors might react.

SALVATORE’S RESTAURANT HOLDS COMEDY NIGHTMany residents waited in line for the third annual Meatballs of comedy Night at Salvatore’s. A buffet dinner was served to the guest in attendance and the show followed with plenty of laughter and great humor.

Owners Joe and Anthony said,” this is our third time hosting this event and because of the success we will be doing more shows in the future.”

The Comedy show is a great way to spend an evening out in Montebello. For future events at Salvatore’s call 323 727-2840. Salvatore’s is located at 125 N. 6th street in Montebello.Restaurateurs Joe and Anthony DeLorenzo

Pelaez feels as chief, "one must embrace an understanding that things do not stand still in Montebello." "The demands are great, but if you invest the time, listen to and trust others, and know how to be flexible, you will get far more out of the experience than you put into it," he said. His goals as chief are "to continue to strengthen the areas where the

Department is strong and recognize and improve those areas that need improvement." "I would like to see progress in the areas of policy formatting and in the implementation of proper succession planning," he said. He also wants the Department to be technology-focused and to explore available grant funding opportunities to restore resources. "I am extremely honored to be named chief and will continue to give my best to the Department and the community we serve," he added.
