    Taking a reading

Using the magnet mount, place sensor on a rigid part

of the machine as close as possible to the desired

    measurement point

− For best results sensor should be placed gently onto

measurement point by rolling the magnet onto themachine

− Avoids sudden shocks seen as large acceleration peaks

by the sensor and takes some time to die away

    Reading the display

    ISO values

ISO value (in mm/s or inch/s) is the RMS

(average) of the vibration velocity in the

frequency band as specified by ISO

    10816-1 standards.

    − 10 Hz – 1 kHz (600 - 60,000 RPM)

    − 2 Hz – 1 kHz (120 - 60,000 RPMCorrect frequency band is automatically

    selected based on running speed

ISO value background is color coded to

    Reading the display

    Bearing noise

The higher the number, the more worn the bearing

− 1 g of high frequency vibration (100 BDU) corresponds to a relatively high

level of bearing noise, indicative of damaged bearing

Bearing noise is roughly equivalent to a percentage of bearing wear

    Displayed bearing noise levels

    Vibration analysis

    Displays running speed of machine

− Entered manually or use strobe attachment

Vibration velocity (mm/s or inch/s) or displacement (mm or thou)

    − Broken into three bands

Shows vibration level in frequency ranges based on multiples of machine

    run speed

    − 1X = unbalance

    − 2X = misalignment

    − 3X = looseness

    Vibration analysis

    1X = Unbalance

Vibration in the frequency band based on the running speed is usually

indicative of how well balanced the machine is

High vibration at the running speed indicates machinery is out of

    balance

Even very well balanced machines show some vibration at running

    speed

    − Should be quite low

    − Less than 2.3 mm/sec or 0.09 in/sec for a medium sized machine

    16

    Vibration analysis

    2X = Misalignment

High level of vibration in the frequency band centered at twice the running

speed is a possible indication of misalignment.

Shaft misalignment can result in a double peak in the waveform due to

two different center of gravity (one from each shaft)

Accelerometer picks up a peak as each center of gravity passes by

− Two positive and two negative peaks each revolution of the shaft

− Gives rise to a vibration signal at double the running speed of the machine

Dec 2013| © Meggitt Sensing Systems. Proprietary.

    Vibration analysis

    3X = Looseness

High vibration in the frequency band centered at three times running

speed indicates something may be loose

    − mounting bolts

    − weak foundations

Not common to see third order vibration unless there is structural

looseness that is being excited by the vibration of the machine
