Background history of I.P.C• The IPC story has taken many turns in a 150 year period.1853- The Field launched and within one year became the biggest newspaper(24 pages) in Europe. In the late 1800’s another eight IPC titles were launched that are still going today. These are: Country Life, Horse & Hound, Shooting Times, Yachting World, Amateur Gardening, Cycling Weekly, Amateur Photographer and The Railway Magazine. In the early 1900’s three new titles set to be part of IPC media came: Yachting Monthly, Cage birds and Motor Boat.In 1911, the first of IPC’s women’s weeklies- Woman’s Weekly was launched. The same year Golf Monthly came. After the First World War Homes & Gardens was the first magazine to be published. In the 1920’s Ideal Home launched monthly. In 1926 woman&home came and after 3 years it had grown to 144 pages (fiction). In the 1932 Woman’s Own was launched- with the appearance of women five years later. In the 1940’s a wartime role was played by IPC’s women’s weeklies, keeping up the morale of women and supplying them with information service from the government. In the 1950’s music magazines started to come about. The arrival of New Musical Express came in 1952.In 1955 ITV arrived and then soon after TV Times arrived and published its first issue in black and white covering the new commercial stations. In the 1960’s there was the formation of the International Publishing Corporation, which brought together the three rival companies: Newnes, Fleetway and Odhams Press. Traditional competitors all worked for the same parent company- Ideal home and homes and gardens, Woman and Woman's own.1969 came the new football weekly – Shoot! Also in the 60’s came other IPC titles including Rugby World, World Soccer, Angler’s Mail and Family Circle. In the 1970’s The Reed group acquired IPC for form the giant global corporation- Reed international. In the 1980’s IPC announced the formation of European magazines Ltd. A joint venture company with Marie Claire.1990’s came ‘What’s on TV’, it faced competition but went on to be the UK’s best selling magazine. Also NME became the first major UK music magazine to get its own website. IPC magazines was sold to Cinven. 2000- IPC magazines renamed as IPC media.2010- restructured around 3 key audience groups: men, mass-market women and up-market women.

Why would the I.P.C be a good choice as a publisher for a music magazine?

IPC media could be a good choice for my own music magazine as they already have some music magazines which would help mine as they would know how to advertise it well meaning it would sell well. IPC media could also be a good choice as a publisher for my magazine as they would make sure the right things are incorporated into the magazine making sure that it suited the target audience and linked in with their needs. They would know this information as they already have existing music magazines that they publish (NME). On the other hand, IPC media may not be a good choice as a publisher for my music magazine as one of the music magazines that they already publish is NME which is a mainly indie genre music magazine, although it has cross over appeal it is still mainly an indie magazine. The magazine that I will be creating is also an indie magazine, this could mean that IPC media may not be a good choice as if they published two music magazines of the same genre then people may not want to buy them as they might involve the same things so they would pick one or the other.

Bauer Media

• Bauer media group is a multinational media company which is headquartered in Hamburg, Germany. Bauer operates in 16 countries worldwide. They both publish and broadcast.

• The worldwide circulation of Bauer media group’s magazine titles is 38 million magazines a week.

• Bauer’s media brands include Q magazine and Kerrang! • Kerrang! Magazine is a magazine that specialises in

rock music, which is also a radio station and a TV channel.

Would Bauer be a more suitable choice for my music magazine?

• Bauer could be a more suitable choice for a publishing company for my music magazine, as this company has a music magazine called Kerrang! And this magazine is a rock music genre magazine. This is a different music genre to what my music magazine will be (indie), this is an advantage of this publishing company as it will be a new and up and coming magazine that there audience would not of seen before. However the disadvantage would be the target audience for Bauer may not like the indie genre as they are use to getting rock magazines from this company.
