Kate has had her fair share of experimenting in different disciplines, but a creative future seemed set in stone from an early age. Her indefatigable artistic talent continued to surface, so when she returned to New Zealand after years travelling, she bought her first computer. Producing her own wedding invitation led to the opening of her business, Ruby & Willow Design Studio. Building on the immense success of her Magnolia Rouge blog, Kate as the editor in chief of {MAG}rouge is the key to the uncompromising aesthetic and inspiration of the magazine.

editor in chief &art director

After gaining qualifications in History Jasmine took up an IT career, though she never forgot her youthful dreams of winning amateur photo competitions. Finally she understood her true calling: photography and art. Having always had a combined passion for photography with her dear friend Hannah, from their days in the art room at high school, they founded Sutherland Kovach Studio, and the rest is history! Their mission is to create a beautiful sweet world through their images. Jasmine is also crazy about her small daughter and the domestic arts.

Hannah’s interest in photography dates back to her childhood when at an early age she became obsessed with discovering how the 3D world could be transferred to paper through a magic box. After completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Elam she worked in the BBC’s Picture Publicity Dept and on the set of Harry Potter 6 in the photography department. In 2008 she returned home and joined forces with one of her oldest, dearest and most visionary friends Jasmine, in the successful enterprise of Sutherland Kovach Studio.

Judit started her adult life as an economist and marketer in her home country of Hungary. After marrying and having two beautiful girls, she travelled the world, finally stopping at the farthest corner of it in a place called New Zealand. It was here where she finally realised that her best recipe for success would be her culinary skills, sweet tooth, art and craft and marketing talent, and went on to form her business, Artisan Cakes. She still delights clients worldwide, this time not with her incisive ad campaigns but delicious treats from her cake kitchen.

1. Gather your materials together.2. On a piece of paper or card, draw a triangle measuring 16cm x 24cm and cut it out.

3. Place it on your map and cut out the bunting triangles using your ruler and rotary cutter.4. Put your bias binding or ribbon under the presser foot of your sewing machine and sew a couple of inches.

If you have decided to use readymade bias binding, it will be folded for you. If you are using grosgrain ribbon, you will need to fold as you go.

Ranko & Kate

Kate and Ranko met through mutual friends - Ranko had seen Kate’s picture and thought she was the most beautiful person he had ever seen. Kate, on the other hand, had no time at all for Ranko, dismissing him as arrogant and rude! Fortunately, this did not last and they went on to fall in love and get married at Waiheke Island’s spectacular Mudbrick Vineyard.

Kate and Ranko chose Mudbrick because it offered everything they were looking for: good food, good wine, and good service, as well as being a visually stunning location. Ranko describes their wedding style as ‘rustic romance’, which Kate agrees with, as many of their details hark back to days gone by - the lace of Kate’s dress, Ranko’s bow tie, and the twine that they tied to the church pews.

MUDBRICK VINEYARD | WAIHEKEphotography by Danelle Bohane

Page 22: {MAG}rouge Issue 1-2

Ranko & Kate’s favourite road trip |Auckland to Wellington via the Desert Road

“Our reception at Mudbrick was incredible, but I have to say the vows were my favourite part. I will never forget the look in Ranko’s eyes.”

Page 23: {MAG}rouge Issue 1-2

Kate spent a lot of time on blogs picking out key design aspects that she liked, and threw in a few of her own ideas. Her advice to other couples is to establish what you like and don’t

like before you start your planning, and keep your Googling to a minimum to avoid becoming overwhelmed! Ranko’s advice is to put one person in charge, preferably one’s future wife! Both agree that saying their vows were their favourite part of the day, and that the day itself was made special by the love of their friends and family.“We both agree the most emotional moment of the day was during the reception. Kate’s uncle Tony was the MC and, unbeknownst to us, he prepared his speech to the guests on how the two of us met not in words, but by playing songs. Each song was well thought out, and perfectly fit the emotion Tony was trying to convey to the guests. It was the perfect way to lighten the mood, and by the end of the speech, everyone was on their feet dancing. A true 21st century YouTube moment!“

Page 24: {MAG}rouge Issue 1-2

Kate and Ranko, you really are people who make me fall in love with my job over and over again. The love between you is so genuine and full hearted. At the end of the day all I am doing is capturing this love between couples and turning into a memory that they can treasure forever. DANELLE, PHOTOGRAPHER

Meet Toni & Pierre! We photographed their wedding and knew they’d be perfect for our honeymoon shoot. They like art deco design, home-made gifts and dream of living in

Barcelona. Right now they live in Auckland with their sweet baby boy, Jasper.

Get back to nature on a camping honeymoon! Glamourous camping, or ‘glamping’, has come into vogue recently. There’s no need to rough it on the road - pack your snuggliest quilt and some home comforts for the perfect week away. Being wild at heart doesn’t have to set you apart from fashion and style. Chic outfits and beauty treats will create a feeling of indulgence whilst you explore the great outdoors. And with a vehicle like a Land Rover, there’s room for everything plus the kitchen sink!

Martinborough is a gorgeous little town in the Wairarapa - a famous winegrowing region of New Zealand, located not far from the capital city of Wellington. Chris and Melody love the area and chose the beautiful boutique Tirohana Estate for their spring wedding. The couple met at an accounting firm, where both were on the graduate program; Melody in her first year and Chris in his second. On a night out to induct the new grads, Melody and Chris spotted each other straight away. Fast forward six years, and they were en route home after years spent living in London and travelling the world, when Chris proposed in Argentina. There was another surprise to come when Chris revealed he had put three rings on hold at De Beers in Las Vegas, where they were heading in a week’s time, for Melody to choose from.

“I’m originally from South Africa, and Chris has Lebanese heritage on his mother’s side, so Saranne at Tirohana gave a South African / Lebanese flavour to the canapés during the cocktail hour. The meal at the main reception was a three course seated meal of Tirohana fare, delicious as always! ” MELODY, BRIDE

When it came to planning the wedding, Melody had been keen on buttery yellow and grey as her wedding colours but almost changed them when she saw how popular they’d become! In the end, she decided to remain true to what she liked, and also brought in white and silver to even things out a bit. Melody herself admits that, as a chartered accountant, ‘I can’t say that creativity, nor DIY, is really my forte…!! However I do know what I like, and don’t like, so I just went from there!’ She scoured wedding blogs for inspiration, wanting the day to look pretty, elegant and roman-tic. Both her venue and florist were able to translate her vision into reality. Melody says that her guests really noticed and appreciated the details, like the lace wrapped around each napkin.

he team at {MAG}rouge just loves a good tea party! It’s a lovely thing to dress up and take time out from the rush of everyday life; to sit down with friends and family with a cuppa. Especially if the tea is served in a delicate cup and is accompanied by a selection of irresistible savory and sweet treats. It does make one wish to return to those times when these delectable affairs were everyday rituals!

The list of themes and colour options is extensive. Enchanted by the tea culture of Asia, the {MAG}rouge girls concocted a fusion tea party which would incorporate the best of many worlds, with fuchsia as our accent colour. Hand carved, dark wood furniture and neutral coloured tetures and accessories provided the perfect base. Intricately decorated brass and gold vases and pots gave the finishing touches for a visual trip to the Orient.

Judit, our resident entertaining expert, prepared a delicious menu of savoury and sweet treats from the four corners of the world, while her special selection of tea from the best growing areas of China and India impressed our guests in both look and taste!

Each cup of tea represents an imaginary voyage - Catherine Douzel

Jenny & Graziano are illustrators and met in an animation studio in Rome, where they live. After the proposal, they set their wedding date for a year away and spent the time researching and studying wedding blogs. It is Italian tradition to get married in the bride’s hometown, which for Jenny is Feltre, a village in the Veneto region. Veneto is rich in Renaissance and Palladian villas and when Jenny & Graziano found Villa Zasso they knew it was the perfect place for their wedding reception.

Jenny’s Valentino dress set the scene for their colours - as it had embroidered white flowers and black ribbon around the waist, they chose white and black for their table numbers, their guest favours, table decorations, and confetti cones. The couple felt the details were an important part and really enjoyed making them.

Overall, it was exactly the wedding they wanted. They found that, even if there wasn’t time to talk to everyone as much as they would have liked, people had a great time, and that made Jenny & Graziano very happy.

Who doesn’t love a vineyard wedding? Use all those gorgeous grassy greens as a jumping off point for your colour scheme. Strappy green shoes add a precious pop of colour and make a style statement with a knee length dress. Plus, these shoes will take you from pinotage to parquet without missing a beat. Leaf & Honey put together this sweet and whimsical bouquet featuring green and ivory with a little nod to yellow. Work with the elements with

this sweet side chignon casual - and carefree yet tres, tres chic.

Page 69: {MAG}rouge Issue 1-2

Think fresh and light for your beach wedding. Lovely and loose hair, that can still withstand a breeze, and light and airy makeup. Fresh blues and pinks are ideal for an oceanside setting. Annie Oxborough of me, myself and i put together this wonderfully blousy bouquet, centred around the protea flower. Proteas really come into their own for a beach bouquet - they’re gorgeous to look at, and hardy when required! Include some lush greenery in shades of sage green, and you have the perfect accompaniment for your walk down the aisle. Flats are essential on the beach,

like a lovely silvery sandal. Don’t forget your pedicure!

This combination of gold, ivory and buttery yellow would light up a ballroom. Add length and glamour to this dress with a matching petticoat and pair it with some beautiful gold shoes, just right for tripping the light fantastic. A ballroom wedding means you can let your hair down in more ways than one. Show off your luscious locks and glam it up with a timeless birdcage veil or gorgeous headpiece. Roses created this beautifully classic bouquet which

just exudes elegance. Is there anywhere where a blooming peony isn’t welcome?

Page 71: {MAG}rouge Issue 1-2

Dark wood, concrete, petrol green and a luggage leather brown all help to weave this hip industrial look together. A bouquet full of simple creamy blooms and rich green succulents constructed by Roses is the ideal accessory. Structure is the watchword for the loftspace or warehouse wedding - apply this to your shoes and jewellery and you can’t go wrong! Take the inspiration for your hairdo from high fashion and feel free to go avant garde on your

makeup. Transport yourself from afternoon to after dark with a gorgeous and sultry smoky eye.

MARFA | TEXASphotography by Punam Bean

Jessica & Gray

Page 73: {MAG}rouge Issue 1-2

Marfa is a small mountain town in the far west of Texas that began asa railroad water stop in the 19th century. Today it is the home of the Chinati and Judd Fountains, established to preserve the work of the minimalist artist Donald Judd, who moved to Marfa in the 60s. This beautiful place was the location for Jessica and Gray’s wedding. Marfa has two fabulous accommodation spots - the Thunderbird Hotel and El Cosmico, both of which feature in the pictures. El Cosmico offers a range of options, including yurts, teepees and a collection of renovated vintage trailers.

Loving the eclectic decor of these tables... especially all the great packaging on the tins and bottles they’ve used.

Page 74: {MAG}rouge Issue 1-2

Jessica & Gray’s ceremony was held at Mission Mary in Calera, Texas. Mission Mary was built in 1902 and abandoned in the 1940s. The La Calera Foundation restored the mission in 2003 to the in-credible building you see in these pictures.

Sometimes an idea for a shoot can spring from the most unexpected sources. From a length of fabric, to some vibrant glassware or a brightly coloured piece of fruit. Kate spotted these mangosteens in a grocery store and the rest followed quickly after! Claret and apricot work well together as they are both warm colours, with a yellow tone. Create your own colour story for your wedding or event by choosing two complementary colours with the same tone and sourcing elements in those colours. Fabric, fruit, baked goods, your dress and shoes, jewellery, crockery - the possibilities are endless! Have fun gathering props to experiment with and you’ll soon find your own colour story starting to evolve.

ORCAS ISLAND | WASHINGTONphotography by Jeramie Shoda

“We really wanted to capture the beauty of the location, so most things were very natural, like flowers from the farmers market, our reception dinner of fresh salmon and local produce and

a pre-wedding whale watching trip for everyone.”

Page 92: {MAG}rouge Issue 1-2

Brynne and Ryan met one month into their respective university careers at a sports team mixer. Eight years after that, they tied the knot on Orcas Island in the Pacific Northwest of the United States.

Brynne had taken a vacation to Orcas Island a few years earlier and had not been able to get the beautiful location out of her head, so it was an easy choice as a wedding destination! Both were excited for their friends and family to also experience the island’s beauty.

Brynne and Ryan kept the details light as they wanted the focus to be on the surroundings. They kept the guest list small and loved that they were able to spend time with each person who had come to support them. Brynne recommends deciding what to spend time and money on, and sticking to this plan. By forgoing some traditional must-haves, like a DJ or a wedding party, the couple were able to direct their funds towards the things that meant a lot to them - a personal ceremony in a breathtaking setting, and a great photographer.

Page 93: {MAG}rouge Issue 1-2

“Ryan and I both wrote our vows and it was such an intimate

and special moment to stand before our closest

friends and family and describe the reasons we

loved each other.”

“Brynne and Ryan: two people madly in love having an intimate wedding set in a gorgeous location. I was truly spoiled to be a part of it. As a photographer and storyteller, it ’s really such a treat to shoot a day like this where the love in the air transcends

the frame. They couldn’t have made my job easier or more enjoyable, and I love the work we all made together.”

What’s your dream road trip?

Without a doubt, a drive through the

countryside of Ireland. The countryside

looks absolutely breathtaking. Stopping

to take in all of the sites (& pubs!) in the

towns we pass through.

What would be on the stereo?

I’d love to tune into any local radio station

to get a feel for what’s popular in the

country & Dan would most definitely try to

find a local sports talk radio station! When

we lost signal we’d pop in a mix-tape with

some of my favorites; Led Zeplin, Foo

Fighters, Jack Johnson, Phoenix, Dave

Matthews, & maybe a fun song or two

from the Beach Boys & the Beatles.

What essential item would you take?

Sunglasses, lip balm (rosebud salve, to be

precise) & iced coffee. I know that’s not 1

but 1 is too hard! If push came to shove & I

was forced to choose... it would have to be

the sunglasses (mascara almost made the

list!).

What’s your dream road trip?Antiquing in Maine during late September or early October. The leaves have turned the craziest, most magical colors, the air is crisp but not cold, you can buy warm apple cider donuts on the side of the road. It’s my version of heaven.

What would be on the stereo?Probably Colbie Caillat or Elizabeth & The Catapult. With a Glee soundtrack or two thrown in for good measure.

Any advice you would give to a bride having a destination wedding?Hire a wedding planner who knows the area and has solid experience planning desti-nation weddings. Issues like what you can and can’t bring through customs, currency exchanges, language barriers all come into play when planning a destination wedding and having someone who knows the drill will take loads of stress off your shoulders and allow you to enjoy the process that much more. Even if you’re planning a stateside fete, a great planner will know how to put your dollars to the best possible use.

What’s your dream road trip?Driving up the coast from Los Angeles to

Seattle. It’s such a pretty drive and lots of

great places to stop for yummy food along

the way.

What would be on the stereo?Mumford and Sons, Journey and Boston -

love classic rock for road trips! What essential item would you take?My husband! :) Can’t go anywhere without

him.

Any advice you would give to a bride having a destination wedding?

I had a destination wedding. It’s a bit tricky,

but my one piece of advice would be to turn

the wedding into more of a weekend event.

Since everyone is traveling there and the

actual wedding is so short, invite everyone

to the rehearsal dinner and sunday brunch.

We got married on a Friday, so we invited

everyone for a boat ride around the city on

Saturday and we all ended up hanging out

the whole day and night. That was almost as

much fun as the wedding day!

What’s your dream road trip?A road trip with my husband of course. To

go up and down Southeast Asia, on bike, on

a boat and then with a car. Did you know

you can do a bike tour through Cambodia?!

Sign me up.

What would be on the stereo? We have such opposites taste in music. It’ll

be a mix of reggae and 80s pop!

What essential item would you take?

My camera and my journal! I don’t want to

miss or forget anything.

Any advice you would give to a bride

having a destination wedding? One - don’t be too shy to ask for help. Hire

an experienced planner. And two, when

the planning is done and it’s the day of

the wedding - keep this in mind; you’re in

a beautiful foreign place, celebrating your

love for each other. Relax, laugh, and be in

the moment. You’ll want to remember every

single sweet moment of this brilliant day!

So, you’ve planned your wedding with great care and the color scheme is set. The flowers, bridesmaids’ dresses, stationery and wedding cake are all in perfect harmony. Why not carry those colours throughout the event, right down to the cocktails and canapes? Here we show you a couple of examples with a focus on deep, sumptuous red.

Use the colours of your wedding throughout your food displays to connect all elements together. Look on Etsy or Ebay for

interesting pieces to display food creatively. Ask your caterer what they can do to further enhance the presentation of your menu choices. Use props to complement the style of food you’re presenting. Bring in fresh flowers and herbs to surround the

senses with tastes and flavour

Tea andWhen putting this shoot together, Sofia imagined a group of friends gathering for a bridal shower, and wanted to create an occasion that was more winter oriented. Paper flowers are used to make a statement and the aesthetic is simple & clean. The colours are those that we normally associate with tea - natural soft hues, light browns, beiges. Marmalade orange adds a warm accent and completes the look.

Leading florist, Annie Oxborough, who created this amazing bouquet, says “wedding flowers are back in vogue, and we’re seeing more adventure than ever before with a nod to yesteryear. Brides are a lot more relaxed and reflecting on the past. High tea on the lawn is undergoing a major facelift and the results are reflecting a romantic, whimsical bouquet almost handpicked from Granny’s garden.”

As Kerry stood with her dad, before walking down the aisle, she could see the ceremony and reception areas. In her own words, “[it] was the only few minutes of the entire day that I really got to see how everything I had envisioned, while planning our wedding, had turned out. I remember turning to my dad and telling him everything was exactly what I had wanted. It really could not have been more perfect! ”

Page 117: {MAG}rouge Issue 1-2

Kerry & Joe both graduated from the same college but somehow never met until a few years later when they both worked for the same software company. They were married at Holland Ranch in San Luis Obispo, California.

They chose Holland Ranch as they wanted a venue that reflected their relaxed, laid back personalities, but could be dressed up a little with their colour choices. They also loved the idea of a ranch, as they are very keen on anything country! As soon as they saw the ceremony site at Holland Ranch, they were sold.

Both Kerry & Joe spent time crafting the details for their wedding - together they made straws for every water cup on the tables, Mr. and Mrs. banners and a Thank You banner. They also made all the signs that were placed round the venue, and the table name and guest place cards. Finally, Kerry and a friend made 200 cake pops for the guest favours!

“JOE & I CHOSE to do a ‘first look’ to allow us to spend more time at our own wedding. It was SO SPECIAL WITH just the two of us, and our wedding party watching from afar. It was really nice just to have those FEW MIN-UTES TO OURSELVES before all the chaos!”

My favorite part of the day was sunset pictures of course! The mix of this gorgeous couple, the love and excitement of the day and the golden light from the sun was magic.
