Donald AdrainMembers, The time is upon us... the light has arrived... when we wake up in the morning its there.... when we leave work (assuming we are spurn-ing a promotion) its still there !! We all know what this means.......It’s sailing time !!!! No more leafing through the magazines, read-ing the catalogues in secret and ordering the bits late night on the net......hiding the card statement from the non- sailing mem-ber of the partnership, taking furtive trips and claiming it all only came to £30.00 for Harken ratchet blocks, Kevlar Tell Tales, and that must have carbon fibre bilge pump..... ”but darling.... it’s double acting”!!
Commodore
It’s Sailing Time! None of this matters because its time to fit it, put up and then get out on the water and use it. Whether or not it makes a hoots worth of difference is immaterial because its all about getting out there and taking part. On that sentiment you will see some fabu-lous articles and opportunitites in this issue of “Mainsheet” so please take up the challenge and get involved....its not the committee,s club...its all of our,s so if you think we are miss-ing a trick please do let us know. Contacts are best via email or website but if thats a problem then leave a note in the pigeon holes behind the bar and we will do our level best to make it happen.

The Honda RYA Youth RIB Championship is a great way for youngsters to get into powerboat-ing safely and develop their skills - with the chance of winning a RIB for their club.
The action kicks off for 8-16 year olds at DBSC on May 14th, with the Scottish Regional Finals on June 11th.

DBSC Mainsheet - April 20114For all the latest club news, check out our website:
I was last sailing in January in Australia, where Gavin Homer and I were competing in the Musto Skiff World Championships. Our boats arrived back just last week and I am itching to get back on the water. The UK boats were packed in 2 con-tainers with 14 boats in each, and although the boats are OK Gavin had a bike stolen from the container, so between that and his dislocated shoulder he didn’t have much luck at the event – although I think he still had a good time.
Well, the 2011 sailing season is just about to start, and there have been some interesting changes. The first of these is right at the start of the season, when the first weekend is:
Saturday 2nd April: Brass Monkey: Instead of the normal one race there will be a series of 3 short races for the famous ‘Brass Monkey’ trophy. First race starts 1 pm
Ozzie BBQ: Stick around after sailing for an Australian-themed BBQ, in place of the Commodores Supper.
This is inspired by our trip down-under for the Musto Skiff Worlds at Melbourne in January. It will be an informal affair (only fitting for an Ozzie event), but it would be good if some people would dress-up or bring along Ozzie stuff. We might show some Ozzie pics & video on the wide-screen tellies…..
Sunday 3rd April: First of the Earlybird Series First Start 2 pm
HandicapsThe new Portsmouth Yardstick Handicaps for 2011 have been published and regular racers may be interested to know that the Musto Skiffs will find it tougher to compete this year as our handicap has been slashed by a massive 15 POINTS – from 875 to 860.
That will make it really tough for us. Other significant changes are:
• Laser +2 to 1082• Topper +2 to 1297• Europe +3 to 1143• Hornet+6 to 979• Laser 4000 +3 to 911• Laser Stratos +2 to 1089• Supernova +2 to 1065• Finn -2 to 1060
Increased numbers make it easier to compete – so I don’t want to hear any excuses from the Toppers/ Europes/ Laser 4000s/ etc.
Join in the Fun – Just Ask!It’s all about enjoying the fantastic sport of sailing, and we are keen to get as many people on the water as we can – don’t worry about your standard – come along and have some fun. If you are not sure what to do then ask. If you can sail and don’t have a boat, then ask about using the club boats – that’s why we have club boats.
If you are nervous about using a club boat then someone will take you out – again just ask.If you are interested in sailing, then we want you – just ask and we will help get you going.
Happy Sailing!

Dutyman is up and running, and you are en-couraged to choose dates that suit you. The duties will shortly be allocated to those who have not chosen and you will have to swap if you want a change.
Don’t forget there are lots of ways to learn to sail or develop your sailing skills up to the next level this year with DBSC.
Tuesday night sessions will run for a block of nine weeks (May-June) with the 28th June being the final one. Those who have advanced enough to sailing competently on their own will have the opportunity to take part in Wednesday night racing.
There will be a supply of instructors available to take out those wanting to race but apprehensive to do it alone.
Hopefully by compacting the sessions to nine week the candidates will be more focused on achieving and practicing the basic sailing knowledge to allow them to continue on their own accord.
The Wednesday evening novice racing will run from 8th June – 24th August (series 2 and 3). If there is enough demand to do so, novice starts can be run on a Sunday too.
As covered in the last issue of Mainsheet, Registration for Training is changing this year to make it as fair as we possibly can. Registration forms will be posted on DBSC Website. All forms will need to be brought to the club on Tuesday 29th March between 7.30pm and 9pm where SI’s/admin team will
This year has been more difficult due to the ex-tended membership deadline, so please work with us to make it work.
Please visit the website and use Dutyman wherever possible, but if you are having problems contact our Dutyman Team at: [email protected]
check forms for completeness such as previ-ous experience and medical details etc.
In early April a Ballot will be held to fill all spaces for Tuesday night training – Commodore will be present to ensure that no preferential treatment is given. All interested parties will be informed of successful or otherwise outcome of ballot.
The dates for youth week are 25th – 29th July 2011. To register interest please contact Glenn Halstead on either [email protected] or 01383 825 165.
Information required at this stage is: Name, age, previous experience or qualifications, desired course if at the stage of choosing between Seamanship Skills, Start Racing, Sailing with Spinnakers andDay Sailing (we will offer 2 or 3 of these de-pending upon demand).
Finally, the regular training throughout the year is in need of new helpers and instructors. If you can spare a few hours each week and are keen to help others to learn the sport please contact the training team. There are many ways you can help!

Need a boat to race?
The sailing season is nearly upon us with only a handful of days until the Brass Monkey race (2nd April) kicks off another great season of on the water activities.
With that i mind we’dd like to take this opportu-nity to remind the membership of the fantastic resources DBSC has available to its members in the form of its dinghy training fleet. These boats are available to be used by members during Club Races or Special Saturdays (see ‘Procedures for the use of club boats’ below or on the website).
If you wish to use one of the club dinghies and you believe you conform to the above criteria please text Stewart Moss with your request (which boat type and which race) at least 24 hours before the race and he will let you know if you are eligible and the availability. Mbl: 07740205887.
Make the most of your membership! We look forward to seeing you on the water this season.
The boats available are:
9 Optimist Dinghies
Don’t be put off by the picture, it doesn’t take 6 kids to move them, they are in fact great boats for small beginners to learn and hone their sail-ing skills in a very robust and stable platform. They are not lacking in excitement either and can be great fun if competing in a fleet.
Procedures for the use of club boats
The club dinghies are primarily for training pur-poses, however they can be used by members with the permission of a member of the training team. Juniors who regularly attend Tuesday night training need to have gained a stage 3 certificate or better to use club boats at race times.
Juniors are not permitted to take club boats out other than on Tuesday & Sunday training sessions, club racing, and under the authority of the training team during occasional events such as the Open Day.
Club boats may only be afloat if there is ad-equate rescue cover to deal with all those on the water.
6 Toppers
These boats are ideal for the slightly older and more experienced child and can easily be sailed with two to give a bit more stability and a great shared experience.

With the season set to begin and the new additions to the RIB fleet on their way, the refresher skills courses have begun as part of the clubs RIB ‘Ambassador’ initiative - aimed at encouraging safe usage and best practice.
A series of short videos are in production for inclusion shortly on the club website to profile key procedures such as launching, recovery, slipway approach, and other close handling.
The next course taking place is “A bit of rough and tumble” on Saturday 30 April, 9.30am - 1pm. The cost is £10/head to cover fuel and it offers participants a chance to learn the skills of safe, rough water driving - combined with a chance to spend time practising recovery of popular club dinghies.
There are still just a few places left available on this course so for more information and to book please contact: James Allan / Sarah Birrell Tel: 01383 824201 Email: [email protected]

2011 looks set to be a busy year on the water and you can expect even more off the water too. The following list - extended since the last Mainsheet issue - comprises all the key event dates set so far. There will be more, as we plan and develop our events itinerary across the year, and if you have an idea for a social event or see something that you think Dalgety Bay
Sailing Club us really missing then please speak to a committee member and help us set the wheels in motion. As always the success of our social events at the club is down to you - our members, and your guests in coming along and getting involved. And of course we need your help to pull these events together and make them something to remember.
So if you are the best burger flipper in town, salad saucier extraordinaire, or a wannabe world record holder in stacking away chairs or sweeping up empty plates then now’s the time to stand up and be counted!
