Welcome back members of the Lake Beulah Yacht Club. Your Board has all the administrative and social events squared away and on course. The summer of 2013 is upon us with many sum- mers of memories founded in our rich tradition of friendship, families and volunteerism. Enjoy with gusto the parties, judging, your gunboat team and racing on the most beau- tiful playing field in sport. Seasonal weather persisted during a winter resulting in the latest “ice out” record in 50 years, April 10 th . Recently meeting at the club house for the first time since November, it was enjoyable to see a very strong west wind whipping up bright white caps on the dark blue water. Several members were in hot pur- suit of the endless summer and were successful, having been on open water since September. In the MC fleet, Rear Commodore Chris Kubicek and Social Chairper- son Don Franzene drove to Lake Eustis Florida for Zenda University. Annie Haeger and Briana Pro- vancha traveled to Spain and won the Bronze medal competing in the ISAF Princess Sofia Cup in the 470. Whoa! The Board has met monthly since September keeping the club on course. I want to thank all the Board Members for stepping up, showing great passion and making the task of being Commodore as smooth as a beam reach in 18 mph of breeze. I want to thank Sailing Commodore Frank Davenport for his time and research on yacht clubs around the nation and for sharing the long range planning conversation the Board had during our February meeting. The four past Commodores serving your Board are right on top of the pertinent questions each meeting encounters. Social Chairman Don Franzene is steering a steady course socially and has the club entertainment facilities in great shape. Work Day is Saturday May 11 th at 8:30 a.m. and the Safety Boat Class is at 3:00 p.m. Come on down and help eat the donuts, get a little messy and enjoy meeting the cogs of the LBYC. It’s been a strange winter – 60° plus in January and a frozen lake and fresh snow fall in April. Well it’s spring now, or at least technically speaking it’s spring, and with that we start looking forward to another summer on the lake.

In the past, I have written articles addressing is-sues I believe the club faces going forward and have dis-cussed fellow members’ suggestions addressing those issues. There are others that think my concerns are much ado about nothing, that the club is doing fine and there is no reason to change what we have been doing. After all, the mortgage is paid and we are churning out some of the best sailors in the ILYA, and the world! But as any successful entrepreneur knows, you can’t rest on your laurels once you’ve reached the top and it requires as much effort staying on top as did getting there.

Perusing a hand-me-down copy of Sailing World I came across an interesting article by Gary Jobson that hit close to home. He was discussing the challenges the sport of sailing faces in the years ahead and offered his thoughts on the subject. I provide an excerpt here:

“Yacht clubs willGplay a critical role. Our yacht clubs will continue to exist 50 years from now because they are the cornerstone of the sport, but there will be many issues to address along the way to ensure sustainability. For one, regulatory and insurance requirements will likely increase the costs of maintaining water-front facilities. The greatest obstacle fac-ing clubs today, however, is the aging membership base, and unless measures are taken to attract and keep young members, yacht clubs will be vulnerable to the influence of waterfront developers eager for prime real estate. Proactive steps – such as providing fleets of boats,

focusing on sail-ing instruction for all ages, and working with local communities to provide water-front access – will be keys to sur-vival.” Sailing World (Oct. 2012) pg. 24.

While I’m not necessarily advocating that LBYC follow Mr. Jobson’s suggestion, I am pleased to note that we already do some of the things he suggests. Al Haeger has spearheaded an adult sailing program and the club has gotten more involved with local organizations. How-ever, it is his assessment that the greatest obstacle fac-ing our club today is the aging of our membership base that I find particularly resonant. In our case, given the volunteer nature of the club, the issues of increased costs and aging membership base compound each other.

This past winter your Board informally discussed this issue and observed that pursuant to Article IV, sec-tion 6(a), of the Club’s Bylaws it is required to “periodically direct the preparation of a long range plan and make a report to the membership”. Consequently, it thought a good idea would be to reach out to the mem-bership by holding an open round table discussion for the purpose of formulating a long range plan for attracting and keeping young families and members. While a date has not yet been set, we want you to know that we will be setting one sometime in June, most likely, and hope that all of you will attend. With everyone’s help we can de-velop a long range plan to ensure the club’s ability to pro-vide the kind of quality experience it has provided for the past 120 years for the next 120 years.

Thank you, Frank Davenport Frank Davenport Frank Davenport Frank Davenport on behalf of the LBYC Board of Directors

I hope everyone has weathered the winter as well as possible under the circumstances. We are all looking for-ward to warmer weather and water - it seems spring is taking its time in get-ting here but it's my guess that sooner or later we'll see improvement - surely by the Opening Party on May 25th - see the included announcement for details. We hope to see you all there. When you pick up your yearbook please review the section on Social Committee assignments and responsi-bilities and make note of any changes that will be necessary to coordinate your personal schedule with the club's events. If you need to trade responsi-bilities with someone please be sure to inform all the folks involved and let the committee chairs know what's up so things will go smoothly. We've tried to take everyone's needs into account

but perfection is a fast moving target. The Social Chairperson has enlisted and required the assistance of a band of compatriots in order to compensate for a variety and vacancy of personal talents - any of you who know me well are aware of my reputation for memori-zation, organization, management and motivation. I'm assisted by Skipper Jeff, who will manage the bar; Person-nel manager Candace, who clearly understands the fine distinction be-tween the Socialite that I am not, and Socialist that I am; and Julie who will keep us in kitchen supplies and good humor. So with the help of friends and our membership I hope to muddle through the summer. On the subject of Fun...... save the date of June 22 for the Stein's Improv - Comedy Dinner and Show. In the past we've been provided professional

quality perform-ances by the cosmo- politan perpetra-tors of this enter-taining event and anticipate an even more seasoned if not sea-sonal performance at this year's show. I've always thought of Wednesday Cookouts (I have yet to figure out why we call it Cookout) as the weekly spiri-tual gathering of the LBYC tribe. The first of the season is May 29.

Our Christmas Party featured Santa plus the ETHS Choir with director Roger Trader, great decorations and delicious food. The committee, pic-tured above included the Porters, the Robles and 3 expectant couples. All have had their babies: Molly and Kevin Brickler had Crosby, a boy on October 24th, Dawn and Mike Greeson welcomed Riley Mae on April 3rd, and on April 19th Brooke and Brian Brickler greeted a second son, Cameron. Congratulations to all!

Annie Haeger Update Winning two races, Annie Haeger

(Beulah) and Briana Provancha cap-

tured the bronze medal at the Prin-

cesa Sofia Cup which concluded Sat-

urday in Spain. While five American

teams made it to the medal round,

the 470 #1712 was the only US team

on the podium. The team had a

rough start tearing a spinnaker suffer

ing a DNC in race #1 but they im-

proved daily with a combination of 2-

4-1-5 that wowed the crowd. They

moved into the medal round along

with their American sailing partners

and then won medal race #1 to con-

tinue to move up in the standings.

This pair travels to France next for a

smaller event and then the next ISAF

regatta at Hyeres, France. Gordy

Lamphere in the tough Finn class

finished 44th and Erik Bowers was

82nd in the Laser class.

Lake Beulah Sailing School – Moving Forward LBSS has some changes and some exciting twists for 2013. First, there are changes in the instructor ranks as some of our previous instructors pursue summer career-building experi-ences. Our 2013 instructors are Kate Klement, Cullen Barr, and Riley Schmidt. Many thanks to our retiring instructors Will Haeger, Gabrielle Bui, and Neal Klement for their great service. Now for the exciting twist. Our senior instructor for the first two weeks of sailing school will be Charles Higgins from Old Dominion University. He is an assistant coach there and comes very highly recommended by Steph Roble. He is likeable, has a ton of experi-ence, and will bring a fresh intensity level to get things started. LBSS classes begin June 10. Registration forms are available on the LBSS website (www.lbssonline.org), and we encourage you to get these mailed in so we can plan. Orientation/Open House will be held on Sunday, May 26th at 6:30 p.m. at the club. This will be an opportunity for all par-ticipants to meet some of the 2013 instructors and ask questions. Our schedule will be posted soon on the LBSS website. Another change you should know about is the new concussion regulation in Wisconsin. This regulation requires all organized athletic programs to provide concussion information to participants, parents, and coaches. Coaches and parents will have responsibilities to ensure removal from activity and evaluation for any potential concussions. Fact sheets and agreement forms for these requirements will be part of the registration process. Questions about the youth sailing program? Contact Joe Skotarzak at 414.406.2949 or joesko@river-

run.com. Here’s to a great season!

Lake Beulah Sailing School – Moving Forward

Adult Learn to Sail (ALTS) successfully improved its for-mat last year with the “instructor in the boat” concept using stable and roomy Flying Scot sailboats. Last year’s class was quite successful and the final class featured some great rac-ing between the two novice teams. We are offering this pro-gram again at a tremendous bargain. You get eight lessons

and a sailing instruction book for the incredible price of $150! ALTS will begin on Monday, June 10, from 6 – 8 pm. The beginner class will be limited to six stu-dents. Last year we sold out and had a waiting list, so send in your form and check soon. Registration forms are on the LBSS website (www.lbssonline.org) or contact Al Haeger ([email protected]) (262-642-7723) to sign up. For advanced students, LBSS will offer racing-oriented private lessons in scows.

It’s Luffable - .The Savvy Traveler

The well-traveled Atkinson’s had everything planned out for a January escape to Mexico. To make their departure easier, they booked an O’Hare hotel that offered free parking for the week. While waiting for the airport shuttle the next morning, Tom asked Barb for the passports. Barb said, “You have them!” After a frantic search they hung their heads and returned home to Beulah. The passports were still on their printer, where he forgot them after making a copyGjust in case! They lost that first day in Mexico but flew out the next

day for a great week and a great story.

Time Battle Kathy Will was already in her car, driving to the new

“Y” for a water exercise class and naturally a little

late. It was sunny and she couldn’t find her sun-

glasses in her purse on the seat. Not concentrating,

she found herself in the left turn lane, getting on I43

North bound. “Oh No” she screamed. Desperate, she

decided to make a U-turn at an illegal break in the I43

median. She proceeded back to Mukwonago, driving

in the left lane with construction cones dividing the

two lanes. It was odd that there were no cars behind

her. Checking her rear view mirror again, she finally

noticed that all the cars were approaching in the right

lane. Desperate again, she wove through the cones

to the right side at free-way speed! Finally, arriving

late at the “Y”, she checked again and there they

were, in her purse, those sunglasses!
