Thunderbird Sailing Club April 1, 2017 Norman, Oklahoma
A big thank you goes to Don McGorman for an interesting and entertaining program about lightning and indicators when to head for shore. Jim and Judy Chapman did an outstanding job hosting the March Madness tailgate. Food was great; thanks to all who provid-ed. Next month looks like fun with a beach party bonfire and kickoff for the Leu-kemia/Lymphoma Cup. We will also be fi-nalizing plans for regatta donations, hospi-tality and safety volunteers. Clean up help is always appreciated.
Spring is already here. It’s time to paint the deck and clean out flowerbeds. Our volun-teers have lots of interests and obliga-tions. Your time to join in the April 1st work party to prepare boats and the BoatHouse for a new season is not taken for granted. The new storage build-ing is coming along with lots of volunteer hours as well.
Sail safe,
Mary Anne Secrist, Commodore

Mammoth Lake Thunderbird oil discovery biggest ever in USA By Cap Syze Updated 6:27 AM ET, Fri April 1, 2017
Drilling rigs in west Lake Thunderbird near Norman Oklahoma will be a welcome component to our racing according to TSC Fleet Captain Simm Hollar shown above left sailing by rigs TSC #1 and LTEF #1. The photo on the right shows Normal Fisher’s ’Reactivation’ on a starboard tack passing by Hog Creek #1.
Story highlights • New estimates of the Lake Thunderbird Basin oilfield now project it to be the largest in Oklahoma history
Oil has been produced in the Clear Creek area since the 1980s
Geologists say a new survey shows an oilfield in East Norman dwarfs others found so far in the United States, according to the FS Geological Survey. The Zoom Beach formation in the Lake Thunderbird Basin is now estimated to have 20 billion barrels of oil and 1.6 billion barrels of natural gas, according to a new assessment by the FSGS. That makes it three times larger than the assessment of the oil in the mammoth Bakken formation in North Dakota. The estimate would make the oilfield, which encompasses the cities of Pink and Norman --18 miles apart -- the largest "continuous oil" discovery in Cleveland County, according to the FSGS. "This oil has been known there for a long time -- our task is to estimate what we think the volume of recov-erable oil is," assessment team member Jerry Jowles told the MS reporter Cap. Syze. The term "continuous oil" refers to unconventional formations like shale, in which the oil exists throughout the formation and not in discrete pools. The FSGS estimates how much oil is considered to be undiscovered but technically recover-able. "Even in areas that have produced billions of barrels of oil, there is still the potential to find billions more," Ma. Seachrist, coordinator for the TSC Energy Resources Program said in a statement. "Changes in technolo-gy and industry practices can have significant effects on what resources are technically recoverable, and that's why we continue to perform resource assessments throughout Lake Thunderbird and the world."

Renewing your TSC membership:
For those who have responded with your annual renewal payment, Thank You!
However, for those who have yet to send theirs in, it is very disappointing to go to my
mailbox and find nothing there. It has been slow going for membership renewals this
year and I am hoping that if you are among those who have yet to return yours, that
you will consider doing so. We really need your support. Thanks!!!
If you have not received your renewal, or perhaps misplaced yours, please get in touch
with me.
Thank you for all your support J
Delinquent TSC Membership Renewals
It is never too late to renew your membership. Sadly, I still have several members
who have not renewed their memberships for the current year. This makes it difficult
to keep our budget goals and it makes my volunteer job harder having to personally
remind you. If you have not taken care of the current year’s renewal, please do so
now. We really need you and we desperately need your financial support. Please.
If you have any questions about your membership, please contact me. Thanks.

ESL Annual Sailing Day—April 29
Ahoy, Skippers!
It’s that time again! Trinity Lutheran Church’s English conversation class meets from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the
BoatHouse on Saturday, April 29 for an annual sailing day. The class, which consists of international students
and their families working to improve their English skills, will learn sailing basics from parts of a boat to
points of sail, before hitting the water for keelboat rides.
Skippers—and anyone else interested—please join us! We’ll need skipper volunteers and crew to
take the students on keelboat rides, and non-sailors are always welcome to sit in and talk with the students.
Michael Klatt will get things started with a presentation on sailing basics until about 11:15, and then we’ll
break for lunch and rotate the students on keelboat rides till just before 2 p.m. We’re expecting a big turn-
out—our class size this semester has been about 20 students, including a handful of children, from China,
Korea, Taiwan, and Russia.
Lunch is provided for TSC volunteers. Please let me know if you plan to attend as soon as possible so
I can coordinate with the skippers and plan for lunch. This club always gives this class a warm welcome, and
the students talk about the day for weeks afterward. Thank you, as always, for your support! —Emily Schus-
ter, 405-227-7874, [email protected]
