parental toolbox to include leadership and advocacy

skills? Then, we have a great opportunity for

you. The Parent Leadership Training Institute

(PLTI) trains, inspires and empowers all parents to

become effective advocates for children. To learn

more about this dynamic program which begins in

January, please contact Sara Barczak at

Oak's Family Resource Center at 860-929-5575.

There is no cost to participate in this leadership

training program.

Magnet Applications

Magnet applications for the 2017-2018 year at

Charter Oak International Academy will be

available in the Residency Office, at the Town

Hall, in the Charter Oak main office , and on

the West Hartford Public Schools website

(www.whps.org) beginning on January 12,

2017 and are due at the Residency Office,

Room 154 at West Hartford Town Hall, by

March 9, 2017 at 4:00 p.m.

RECESS POLICY

Children should be appropriately dressed to

spend time outdoors during recess. Warm

clothes, gloves, hats and boots are required

during winter months. Children well enough to

come to school should be well enough to be

outside during recess. Exceptions, for medical

reasons, may be granted on an individual basis.

In the event of inclement or severely cold

weather, outdoor recess will be canceled.

DISMISSAL PROCEDURES

Changes in dismissal plans do occur. Please make

every effort to contact your teacher(s) with any changes.

Students must leave school grounds immediately each

afternoon, unless accompanied by an adult, as schools are

not responsible for supervision of children after

dismissal. Children will:

Take the bus home.

Walk home with written permission from parents.

Be picked up promptly by parent or designated adult.

ATTENDANCE

If your child(ren) will be absent or tardy from

school, please call our school office at

(860) 233-8506.

If you are put into our voicemail system, press 1

to leave a recorded message. Please include the

reason for the absence. This procedure will

eliminate incorrect absence reporting as well as

unnecessary phone calls to your home.

MOVING OR

CHANGING

SCHOOLS?

If you have moved or are planning on moving

to another address, it is necessary to contact the

Residency Office and inform them of your new

address. You may reach them by calling (860)

561-6620 or stop by their office at the Town Hall.

Please DO NOT CALL THE SCHOOL OFFICE.

Reminder: Whenever there is a delayed opening, ALL

morning activities such as Band, Choir, Orchestra,

WHEE, Peace Place, etc. are CANCELLED.

Early Closings

The following information pertains to early closings for

the high school, middle school and elementary schools:

High School - 11:00 a.m., Middle School - 11:45 a.m.

and Elementary - 1:00 p.m.

Plan ahead and talk to your children about your

plans for Early Closings.

Children should know where to go if you are not

home (give them several options). Suggestion:

Have children leave a note in your mailbox to

indicate where they have gone.

Students who usually take the bus will take the bus

home. Students who walk will be sent home.

Students who attend WHEE will also be dismissed at

the emergency closing time of 1:00 p.m. WHEE

and Peace Place are CANCELLED.

When the Superintendent of Schools cancels all after

school activities even if school is not closed early,

WHEE and Peace Place WILL NOT BE OPEN.

Apply now for the 2017-2018 Pre-Kindergarten programs located at Charter Oak

International Academy, Florence E. Smith STEM School and Webster Hill School.

Applications will be available in all West Hartford Elementary School Offices, at the

West Hartford Town Hall in the Residency Office (Room 154) and the Human

Services Office (Room 306), and online at whps.org beginning January 12, 2017.

Applicants must be:

A resident of West Hartford

Age eligible:

Charter Oak International Academy will accept 60 Pre-K students born

between 1/2/13 to 1/1/2015.

Smith and Webster Hill Schools will accept 16 Pre-K students each

born between 1/2/13 and 1/1/14.
