In an article by Tom Schultz he challenges the assumption of we in the church; namely that our church has to be the “best” at something. He questions whether being the best is really a good thing to be asking. Too, he questions whether or not our desire to serve God well might naturally lead us to want to be the best in town.
Certainly a desire to be the best has desired outcomes. But what is necessary to be the best?
In any competition, whether it’s sports, or academics, business or fashion … to have “winners” necessarily means you have “losers”, or at least non-winners (you choose what terminology goes down better for you) And in the church such thoughts get ugly real fast because this desire to be best, this competition leads to pride—one of the seven deadly sins.
One person from Shultz’s article said in her mind churches today just want to be bigger and better than the next one. Is that what God’s church on earth is all about? Is that what God intended when the Holy Spirit was sent to the disciples on Pentecost? That the disciples were called to “game” the church like a perverted version of “Celebrity Apprentice?”
Yet we still ask ourselves, “What can we do to make us stand out?” Shultz suggests it’s wrong thinking. Why? Because we’re not called to stand out; we’re called to stand behind and he uses Mark 9 as an example.
The disciples argued over which of them was the greatest—who did the most, who had the best ideas, who was most important. Jesus tells them (and all the rest of us, pastors included) “Anyone who wants to be first must be last, and the servant of all.” Called not to stand out, but called to stand behind, supporting those whom they serve.
Nowhere in the Bible does it suggest God’s people should first and foremost be concerned with the ABC’s—attendance, building, and cash. Rather it reminds us God’s church is called to serve, humbly. We are called—called not to be the best in town, but to touch lives with God’s love; to be faithful where God has placed us.
God’s blessings to you this summer - relax and enjoy life in the warmth of God’s love.

The Trust Fund committee would like to explain how each of you can leave your legacy at First
Lutheran Church. We offer a “Leave a Legacy-Build a Bridge to Our Future”. The “Bridge to
Our Future” display is located in the narthex. To leave a legacy you must contribute a total of
$1000.00. You may contribute any amount, any time of the year for as many years as you
choose. For example, you may make payments of $25.00 a month for 40 months or make a once
a year contribution of $100.00 for 10 years. Once you reach a total of $1000.00, a gold plate
with your name engraved will be added to the display. All bridge-builders contributions will be
maintained as an individual account under your name.

Money: It doesn’t have to be hard to talk about
Surveys show that money is the No. 1 cause of stress among married couples. Money is also one of the most difficult subjects to talk about. It takes time, energy and open communication for you to understand each other’s attitudes around finances. One thing that can help is using “I messages.” Other people are more likely to listen and respond positively when you focus on your own feelings, rather than what someone else did wrong.
Here’s how:
“I feel…” Make a clear statement about how you feel.
“when you…” Name the specific behavior that causes you to feel this way.
“because…” Explain why this is upsetting.
Example: “I feel scared when you buy things we haven’t discussed ahead of time because I worry we won’t be able to save enough to help the kids pay for college.” Marriage is a financial partnership as well and open communication helps you jointly steward your resources. If you have questions about your financial situation, contact your Thrivent Financial for Lutherans representative today.
