Banksia Class Dairy Excursion

‘Moo’ bellowed the Cows as the JP Class drove

up the steep driveway towards the Masterman’s dairy.

Firstly, Nick was there to meet us, followed by Bernie & Deb.

Deb was the farm manager. We asked lots of questions, then

we went to see the cows get milked. Deb explained how to milk a cow. They put these

things called cups onto the cows udders that suck the milk into huge vats.

Secondly, we trudged down the steep driveway to see the

calves. There was one that was born last Thursday and

Tuesday. We hiked back up the steep driveway towards the

Feeding Pit. We found a potato pile & we bolted and

jumped on it! A few people took a potato home. Then we

went to the silage pit.

Thirdly, we all went back to the shed where the cows

were being milked, and Bernie went back to her house to

get scones. Kenton helped us make some cream. When

Bernie came back with the scones we also tried

unpasteurised milk.

Just before we left Hayden & Cooper presented a card that they had made to Bernie & Nick.

After that we all hopped on the bus & drove down the steep driveway & out of sight.

Banksia Class Excursion to Willmott’s Feed Lot

Baa Baa. All the sheep were bursting to meet the JP class as we

drove to the Willmott’s feedlot.

Firstly, we travelled to the Willmott’s

feedlot to learn about sheep, lambs and

farming. We caught some sheep and put

them in the tailing wagon while we

watched Shayne tail and tag the sheep.

Secondly, we raced to the pen where the sheep ate. Shayne explained what they ate, how

much it costs and how much food sheep eat a day. Rachel let us inspect the pellets while

she talked about what was in them.

Thirdly, we went back to the shed and Hayden, Lucy, Cooper and Zoe rounded some sheep

up so we could see Shayne crutch the sheep.

Fourthly, we went on the bus and drove up the hill to see the

lambs. Shayne told us about how old the lambs were and how

long they took to be born. Then we all had a look at the food trail

that Shayne dropped behind him. We went back to the bus and

that’s when Zoe and I gave Shayne and Rachel our card.

We learnt a lot of information about sheep farming and would like to thank Shayne, Rachel,

Hayden, Heath and Sasha for having us on their farm. Plus we had a great time!

Well done to all students on a busy term! We have finished some amazing symbols of ANZAC “We Will

Remember Them” research projects, which are displayed in the Computer Room. Students have used

techniques from the Seven Steps to Writing

Workshop to compile ANZAC poems to take to

Riverton tomorrow to read before they lay their

crosses. Students have added their poems to

their growing Poetry Anthologies.

Students have also completed a Military Service History biography about family members from our area who have served in War. This afternoon we will begin our Poppy Mosaics.

SCIENCE To complete our Energy Unit,

students constructed electrical circuits and experimented to see what materials were conductors and insulators. They also drew electrical circuits using symbols.

EXPOSITIONS Students are focusing on developing their Exposition writing and are using high modality words, elaborated paragraphs and rhetorical questions in an effective way to argue. Students exposition about cats should be kept in at night, showed pleasing development of exposition writing skills this term. Well done to all students for their efforts.

BASKET WEAVING Our baskets are mostly finished, a huge task, as it requires patience and persistence!! All are unique and students know many facts about how Aboriginal people used local sedge grasses to weave basket, bags, mats, and fish traps. The basket weaving requires very good fine motor skills and lots of time. The baskets look amazing!

INTERVIEWS Well done to all students on running such informative 3-way interviews. Students spoke confidently about their learning goals, and showed their Aboriginal plant use power point. Well done to a great start to the year. Regards, Heather.

SAPSASA SOFTBALL On Monday 4th of April, Sasha and Tyla went down to Adelaide to play SAPSASA softball for the week. We played one game on Monday. We all forgot to have lunch because we had the 12.15 pm game. We won the first game we played for the week against Western Eyre Peninsula. On Tuesday we played two games. Our first game was against Riverland and we lost. Two of our team mates were going for a catch and they got knocked out only for 5 seconds. They had to go to the doctors to get a form so they could play for the rest of the week. The second game we lost as well against Hills. On Wednesday we started playing better and ended up winning. We won one and lost one that day. On Thursday we won both games and the whole team played great. Friday was our last day and we only got to play one game against Onkaparinga that day. We lost. All of us got to play different positions each game which was great. We all had a great week and an existing experience. Our end result for the week was that we can 5th out of 9 teams. A special thankyou to Mr. Brice and all the people who supported us through the week. Tyla Quick and Sasha Willmott.

ANZAC POEM

The bugle call has sounded at dawn.

It’s now time for the battle.

Bullets echoing down the Gully.

Deafening shots, explosions everywhere, shrapnel flying.

Steep cliffs loom ahead, controlled by the Turks.

The wounded lie in agony, injured, waiting, hoping for help.

Hard, crunchy ANZAC biscuits.

Sent a long way from home.

Memories of home was warming hearts, family and friends.

Rain seeping into the trenches.

Holding the cold and slippery metal rifles.

Freezing, feet are wet and fingers are freezing.

The scent of rosemary on the battle fields made memories of

home even closer.

Gun powder filling the air.

Wondering if the gun shots are ever going to stop.

The end of day Bugle roll call has finally sounded.

Not all have returned.

It’s now time for rest.

WE WILL REMEMBER THEM
