to teach your grotto how to draw maps and watching your grottos fill with new excited mapmakers and your newsletters fill with excellent maps



Planning a Grotto Cartography Class – Scope of the class

1. Teach survey classes separate from cartography classSurvey is different from cartography, and takes a different set of skills. Survey is better taught in the field in a one day course

2. Teach sketching courses as well as cartographyLike above Sketching is a different skill then cartography, although the two are very closely linked. In fact it is good to have sketchers take a Carto class, and cartographers to sketch so that each know what the other is doing

Don’t try to cram too much into a single class, or even a series. Decide on what you

plan to teach and tailor your plan to it

1. Invite Everyone! Try not to play favorites! This just gets someone pissed. The truth is not everone will become cartographers or generate maps, but a lot of people will have fun trying, and you may get survey personel

2. Invite widelyHit message board, websites and newsletters. Try other grottos. It is a great way to link groups and youo never know who may want to join in!
