KNOWLEDGE by

Morton’s Neuroma: Ball of Foot Pain The most common source of ball-of-foot pain is Morton’s Neuroma, an irritation of the nerves that run between

the long bones of the foot. If you experience a burning or tingling sensation in the front of your foot, especially when working out, you may have Morton’s Neuroma.

OVERVIEW

Join  Club  FITniche  for  just  $30  and  save  $20  on  ALL  shoes  for    2  years!    Ask  a  crew  member  about  additional  benefits  and  details.

Morton’s Neuroma BEST PRACTICES THAT CAN HELP

1. Be sure all your shoes fit very loosely across the knuckles (metatarsal heads).

2. Don’t wear high heels, as they load pressure on the front of the foot.

3. Take a regular anti-inflammatory for up to two weeks. Be sure it is approved by your physician and agreeable with your stomach.

PURCHASES THAT SHOULD HELP

1. Wear supportive shoes that are a good bit wider across the knuckles than you’re used to and that are correct for your biomechanics. Lower heeled shoes may be helpful. Purchase from a specialty store, like FITniche, that can accurately assess your gait.

2. Wear metatarsal lifts, as they will spread the knuckles out, taking pressure off of the bones and the nerve shafts that run between them. They also shift some weight from the front of the foot to the rear.

A common source of burning or tingling in the front of the foot (most often between the 3rd and 4th knuckles) is Morton’s neuroma. Symptoms If you experience regular pain, burning or tingling near the front of the foot, especially between the 3rd and 4th knuckles from the big toe, you may have Morton’s Neuroma.

Treatment Disclaimer If you don't start to find relief from these suggestions within a couple weeks, be sure to see a medical professional, as other more serious conditions can exhibit same or similar symptoms, and only a trained medical professional can actually diagnose conditions such as Morton’s Neuroma.

Olympian Walter Dix Trains in the Tampa Bay Area for the 2016 Olympics

On a Pathway to Faster Recovery:

Interview with Olympian Walter Dix

Why are you running? What is your main goal right now? I am a professional athlete training for the Olympic Team in Rio. My next race is on March 3rd. My goal is to win a medal in the 2016 Olympics. What injuries are you susceptible to as a runner, and which of those injuries have you already had? Hamstring injuries. I’ve sustained a few of those. Where is your go-to place for faster recovery, and what type of treatments do you feel are most beneficial to you as a runner? Dr. Rhee at Physical Chiropractic. I find the laser therapy and the ART treatment he does most useful. What are the top 3 things you do to avoid injury? ART stretching with Dr. Rhee, chiropractic adjustments, and hydrating. What training phase are you in now? I’m transitioning into specific speed training right now. The worst part of training for me is dieting and watching my food. What is the best advice you can think of to give other seasonal runners, as well as new runners? Stay on top of your body by doing injury preventative therapies, and stay on top of past injuries whether you feel them or not.

From 2010 to 2011, Dr. Rhee was the appointed

Chiropractor and Active Release Techniques Master Practitioner for Walter Dix, a well-known American Track and Field Olympian. Prior to being under Dr. Rhee’s care, Mr. Dix had been struggling with a plethora of injuries for

several years. The main goal for the level of care rendered was for Mr. Dix to be injury free during the World

Championship in 2011. Being in charge of Mr. Dix’s musculoskeletal system and post recovery, while Mr. Dix

was also under the careful training of Coach Rey Robinson, Dr. Rhee helped Mr. Dix earn a gold medal in both the 100-meter and 200-meter run at the USA Track and Field Championship (Eugene, Oregon). Furthermore, also in 2011, at the World Championship in Daegu, South Korea, Dr. Rhee traveled with Mr. Dix to be his medical personnel. Mr. Dix received a silver medal in the Korean 100-meter and 200-meter races. Most importantly, Walter

Dix remained injury free throughout every win of 2011 under the care of Dr. Rhee.

“I find the laser

therapy and the ART® treatment he does

most useful.”

WHY DID THEY CHANGE MY SHOE? Gene Ulishney, BS HPE, MT, CPED, BOCPED

It happens every season as running shoe companies come out with their latest and greatest product updates. With all the advertising hype on how much better the new one is and anticipating a better fit and feel for their favorite shoes, a number of runners are always disappointed after trying them on. “They don’t feel the same!”, “they don’t fit the same!” are among the wide array of complaints. Then, the rush begins to find enough pairs of the “old” shoe to carry them over until the yet newer update arrives in another year. By not trying on the surrounding sizes and widths, you could personally be sacrificing a tried-and-true, safer, more appropriate, better performing and more advanced product.

Change is necessary. It’s a fact that most running shoes’ sales decline proportionally to length of time they are on the market, some more than others. In addition, we Americans are always looking for the “latest and greatest” - a more attractive and better product for our particular needs - a product that will enable us to perform better and achieve our goals with less perceived effort…and look great in the process. Running shoe companies understand this, especially if their most recent model did not sell so well. They must change or get left behind.

A new update seems to level the competitive playing field, at least for awhile. Most everyone wants to try on “the latest and greatest”. Some runners, even though they are happy with their current shoe, will switch just because they “wanted to try something new”, regrettably in many cases. A tweak here, a tweak there, an alteration in materials, an adjustment in dimensions or application can all affect the way an updated shoe finally fits and feels. Feet also continually evolve, leading to the fact that a new shoe should be tried on before every purchase, even if the same style has been worn for years.

Sometimes an updated model will change in function, which is not always good. But, more often than not, it may merely be a sizing difference. It is interesting how many runners are hooked on size as a number, at the expense of how a shoe actually fits. From “I have always worn a size 8”, “I have never worn a size 9”, to “the new update doesn’t fit any longer”, the excuse to staying in a particular size in unending. Trust your local running store to help you with the proper fit, not necessarily your expected size. Products change and your feet change. Don’t get hooked on the number. Your body will thank you as many running pains are solely due to ill-fitting shoes.

Finally, know that there is no consistency in sizing. Every company’s particular sizing will be different. That’s what helps keep everyone in business. Note also that your running shoe size should be a half to a full size larger than your dress or casual shoe size. If your feet are measured, also expect to go up a half to a full size as most measuring devices are made closer to fitting dress shoes. A good running store’s employees know these facts and also have the experience to help fit you properly and keep you running pain-free.

Cycling Education for the Cyclist and the Driver

Recently, the City of St. Petersburg placed an important informational flyer in its utility bills mailed to all residents. It deals with bicycling safety; the shared lane markings (shar-rows) now being used in the city; and the FACT that cyclists have the right in many instances to not only ride in the traffic lanes where there are no designated bike lanes, but also can ride in the middle of the traffic lane, not just the far right side of the road where appropriate. In other words, this is one City that confirms we may use the full lane of traffic. Roads such as first street north, in sections where there is no bike lane, have the “sharrows” markings, which consist of a bicycle with two arrows above the bike emblem, to show motorists where cyclists can be positioned on the road. The reasoning is that the marking assists cyclists with positioning in lanes too nar-row for a motor vehicle and a bicycle to travel side by side.Shared lane marking are officially endorsed in national best practices and design standards. We will be seeing these more commonly in the future, regardless of your state. That being said, convincing motorist’s of the proper use of these mark-ings, as well as the cyclists right to “take the lane” will be an ongoing effort. Frankly, it’s my experience that relatively few of our police officers correctly understand the law as it applies to bicycles. Even with progress, it is incumbent on cyclists to be more than cautious on the roads; we still have far too many motorists who subscribe to the theory that we “should be on the sidewalks where we belong.” Please be safe on the roads; remember, the cyclist rarely wins a physical confrontation with the motorist.
