When I started running years ago, runners were happy to have a digital watch to keep track of their run and
if they were lucky they might find a watch that would also keep track of laps. How times have changed; today we have a plethora of choices to keep track of our activity. The first thing one should consider when buying these electronic activity keepers is what information do you need them to provide to you.
The basics still start with a running watch. Timex, Soleus and Nike are just a few companies that make a good watch that will cover your time, laps, alarm and keep track of your timed events by date. These watches work great and are very dependable. You can usually swim with them or at least run in the rain. Another basic feature that many people use today, especially in a run to walk regimen, is the rotating timer. Some watches will give you this benefit but the Gym Boss brand timer has been the leader in providing a beeping sound or vibration on any two intervals you set. Some people carry a small metronome which helps them maintain a specific running pace. Both the Gem Boss and the metronome can be clipped on to your watch or apparel.
The next item to think about is a heart rate monitor. To get your heart rate, you need to wear a chest strap that transmits the info to your device. Polar has been the leader in heart rate monitors for years and it is so accurate that it is usually used in research projects when a heart rate monitor is needed. Garmin, Nike and Timex have all added heart rate monitoring capabilities to many of their models. One feature that is very useful that most heart rate monitors give you is time in zone. This information lets you know how long you have run at an elevated pace.
Knowing your intensity level helps you balance your training pace. Many of the heart rate monitors listed above use blue-tooth technology and can be synched to your smart phone. All of these companies will organize the information for you on their websites.
The next feature to consider is the GPS system. Garmin has been the leader in this technology but now Polar, Timex, Nike and others offer time and distance tracking. Garmin says their GPS system is accurate within 10 feet of where you are standing. You not only get speed and distance but they have virtual partners you can run with. Most of these companies listed above have merged all the features I have previously discussed into one or more of their models. There are too many models to list so I suggest you go to their respective websites to see what each model can do. Make sure the model you buy has the features you want. The average price of the models I talked about is about $100 to $500.
The last product to discuss is the activity body bands. These companies include Garmin, Polar and Fit-bit and others. This equipment worn all day long can give your heart rate (if you wear a chest strap) your steps, calories burned, sleep level, activity levels and some also work as a watch. Most work with smart phones which is useful if you want to track info. on a 24 hr. basis.
We all need to be active and these technical products do a great job of giving us information about what we are doing. Use the one that will work best for you and that will help you stay active.

PLANTAR FASCIITIS – WHY DO WE GET IT AND HOW CAN WE PREVENT OR ELIMINATE IT?
Gene Ulishney, BS HPE, LMT, CPED, BOCPED
Plantar fasciitis is so common that if we didn’t know better we would think it to be a communicable disease. No one seems immune as people from all walks of life with all types of feet complain about it and experience debilitating pain at the bottom of the heel or arch. The Plantar fascia can overstretch in either a flatter or more flexible foot normally do to overpronation or even in a high arched stiff foot, due to direct downward pressures. It’s all about overstretching the bottom of the foot over a period of time. What has enabled modern man to ambulate very efficiently and our cars to ride so smoothly is also a curse to the foot’s inherent structure and motion pattern – hard, flat surfaces. Known as a “mobile adapter”, the foot has spent count-less thousands of years moving over natural surfaces and has developed a particular sequence of movement. This move-ment enables the foot to efficiently adapt to most any surface that it is challenged with – except hard and flat, all day every day. This surface restricts the natural movements of the foot. At first there seems to be no problem, but with repeated use, certain body structures begin to experience strain. Let me begin to say that humans do not show signs of either overpronation or oversupination while walking bare-foot on grass or sand. I have hundreds of pictures of footprints in sand with virtually none caving in medially nor laterally. Sand is the only surface that actually leaves an impression of the foot while it is in motion. There are some common ele-ments that all of these footprints seem to possess, and I will touch on them next. The first is a deep, centered heel which suggests that it is neither inverting (oversupinating),or everting (overpro-nating). The subtalar joint is stabilized and the heel remains vertical. This “stabilized” heel seems to set the foot up just right for efficient mid-stance through toe-off. If the heel begins to evert, the joint just in front of it, the mid-tarsal joint, must then be propped up to support the foot. It can work but I believe a little too late. This is where most orthotics push up, just behind the arch area – hardly natural. My contention is that, in nature, no one feels a hard bump under the foot while walking on grass and sand. The second deepest impression is under the big ball of the foot. To unlock the big toe joint, the first metatarsal head wants to sink lower than the rest of the metatarsal heads. This action is called the “Windlass Effect”. Mostly ignored, I believe this is one of the foot’s most important stabilizing mechanisms. When the big toe is allowed to extend, or bend up and back, the arch comes up and supports the foot naturally. Try it yourself by standing on the floor, barefoot. Bend your big toe upwards and watch your foot form a more pronounced arch. The “Windlass Effect” works in conjunction with a sta-bilized heel to properly support the foot throughout the entire gait cycle from heel contact through toe-off. And what else do you think a naturally supported arch takes tension from? That’s right, your Plantar fascia, especially at its attachment to the heel bone. There are a few things that can enhance and allow more natural foot movement and help reduce and eliminate heel pain. I’m just going to list them. If you are an overpronator, a stability shoe A shoe with an extremely flexible forefoot to enhance the Windlass Effect” A very supportive orthotic with a deep heel cup; a cut-out under the big ball of the foot which allows the “Windlass Effect” to occur; and a metatarsal pad under the forefoot – inclusively, all very important for total foot balancing A thickly padded sock to lessen point pressure under the heel A cushioned support sandal always while not wearing your orthotic – one unsupported step can set you back for weeks Vigorously massaging the arch area but not over the area of pain Manually stretching the Plantar fascia while pulling the toes back (combine this with massage) Stretching the calf muscle, especially if you overpronate Applying ice at the end of the day And what will keep your heel pain from getting better?
Taking one step without support under your footDoing none of the above
The earlier heel or arch pain is addressed, the quicker it will go away. The first three weeks are critical. Summarizing, be sure you are in a very forefoot flexible shoe, eliminate overpronation, support the arch, pad the heel, stretch, and be patient. You’ll be pain-free relative to the amount of effort you put into these suggestions.

Triathletes: CRUCIAL for your protection:
A primer on the new Florida PIP law; or: How we got screwed again!
As of Last July 1, our enlightened State Legislators saw fit to enact a new Personal Injury Protection law, supposedly in order to try to prevent fraud. In fact what was accomplished was to cut your time within which to seek medical care for injuries; to potentially cut your medical benefits by 75%, with no requirement for reim-bursement to you for the premium you paid for full coverage; and to add insult to injury, there are numerous other restrictions not to be dealt with in this article. Suffice it to say that there are key factors now in place you must be aware of if you want full coverage from your auto policy when you are struck by another vehicle, including when you are riding your bike or running/walking. They include:
1. you have only fourteen days from date of accident to see a designated health care provider if you want your full $10,000 of PIP (no fault) benefits to pay your bills; thereafter, you lose 75% of your coverage, regardless of your injuries.2. Your health care provider (approved class only) must make a finding that you have an “emergency medical condition (EMC)” within the fourteen day period for your full coverage, for which you’ve already paid a premium, to apply. Otherwise, you only receive $2,500 for medical bills.
I’ve represented many athletes over my years as a practicing trial attorney special-izing in personal injury; many know me from my involvement in triathlon; from my announcing many area races, and prior to this new law, it would be normal for an athlete not to even come to see me unless their injuries had not healed satis-factorily with a month or so. Athletes are tough; they expect to hurt, and you all develop a high pain threshold from your training, so pain doesn’t initially bother you much. Unfortunately, you no longer have the luxury to wait to see, because that fourteen day clock is ticking!Under this new reality, if you are in a car accident; a pedestrian/car accident; or a bicycle/car accident, you need to be seen by a qualified health care provider with the limited fourteen day time frame to have access to your paid for insurance. In a strange twist, this law, which was ostensibly designed to try to curb fraud, now makes it mandatory for you to seek treatment, where before, you would have pre-ferred to wait a reasonable period of time to see if you would heal without need of medical care. The end lesson is: YOU CAN’T AFFORD TO WAIT; YOU HAVE TO GET TREATMENT QUICKLY, OR RISK LOSING SIGNIFICANT BENEFITS.
