Good running form puts your body back in synch with the way you were designed to run. It makes running less stressful and more enjoyable by taking advantage your body’s natural biomechanical strengths. Running correctly and efficiently, it turns out, involves more than just putting one foot in front of the other.

One important point to keep in mind is that good running form is centered around the mechanics of the human foot as it operates on natural surfaces. The human foot was not designed for regular use

on uniformly hard, flat, man-made surfaces like pavement and concrete, so footwear selection is critical for all runners who run in this man-made world. So join us for our next FREE clinic at the location nearest to you.

Shoshanah Vaughn

On a Pathway to Explosiveness: Interview with Wide Receiver

Vincent Jackson

How long have you been playing football? I am 33 years old, going into my 12th NFL season. I played for San Diego Chargers for 7 years, and I am approaching my 5th season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. What is your main goal? To maintain or increase explosiveness, strength, cardio, and flexibility. What injuries are you susceptible to as a football player, and which have you had being a Wide Receiver? My position requires a lot of intense sprints; injuries commonly occur in hamstrings, adductor muscles, and lower legs. I have had impact injuries: fractured ribs, wrists, and shoulder (AC joint). What are the top 3 things you do to prevent injury? Maintaining flexibility (before and after strenuous activity), receiving skeletal alignment, and staying hydrated. How does Dr. Rhee at Physical Chiropractic of Tampa Bay help in your performance? Dr. Rhee takes athletic maintenance and recovery to another level! He identifies problematic issues before they stand a chance of becoming debilitating and also aids in faster recovery time when it comes to complex injuries. Which treatments are best? I utilize recovery treatments like Cryotherapy, Laser, and ART. These modern therapies not only sustain, but also improve my performance.

“I utilize recovery treatments like Cryotherapy,

Laser, and ART.”

I’ve been using the rear facing cycliq fly 6 taillight camera com-bination for about seven months now, and want to share my experience. This is an adjustable light including a great strobe; combined with a video camera with sound that runs whenever the light is on. Here are some of the many reasons I highly recommend purchasing one for your everyday bike use: 1. cost: about $170, which isn’t bad considering it’s both a light and an awesome quality video/audio camera. It’s amazing the depth of quality of the picture as well as the sound. 2. Weight: only 116 grams. Again, since combining a light and camera, that’s great. 3. black box effect: this is like having a black box on your bike; it records everything to your rear. This can’t guarantee you won’t be in an accident, but it can certainly help you prove you weren’t at fault. 4. Rechargeable battery. You usb connect to recharge. The com-pany says you’ll get approximately five hours per charge; I’ve found it’s more like six hours. Lights and cameras that aren’t rechargeable eat up a lot of batteries. 5. Ease of use, ease of attachment to bike. 6. Recording loops, so you never have to erase the micro sd card when full; it restarts and writes over prior tape. You only download to your computer what you want; forget the rest. 7. Well made. It’s sturdy construction, haven’t had it fall off the bike once Overall, this is one of the best light/camera products on the mar-ket. I believe every rider should have front and rear lights on their bike, and use the day or night. This is a great way to minimize accidents, maximize visibility; and, if you’re still unlucky enough to be hit and injured, is truly wonderful evidence to any jury to show the negligence of the driver. It’s great insurance that you can have fun with along the way.Safe cycling to you all.

Every runner knows that there are any number of injuries that you can sustain while running, so it is important that you take the time to get all of the necessary information before putting on your shoes and heading out for a run. Anyone who enjoys running on a regular basis will definitely need to know a number of things in order to help avoid and manage common running injuries.

Build up your Mileage Slowly Probably the number one cause of running injuries is when runners do too much, too soon, too fast. The body needs time to adapt from training changes and jumps in mileage or intensity. Build your weekly training mileage by no more than 5 to 10 percent per week. For example, if you follow the 5 percent rule and run 10 miles the first week, do just 10.5 miles the second week, and so on. If you are recovering from an injury or are brand new to running, it is best to stay close to the 5 percent limit or you’ll run the risk of injury or re-injury. More experienced runners who have no history of injuries can safely train closer to the 10 percent limit.

Listen to Your Body Most running injuries don’t erupt out of nowhere and blindside you. They produce signals—aches, soreness, and persistent pain—but it’s up to you to listen to them and take appropriate action. Plain and simple: If something hurts, do not run. As soon as you start to feel an injury coming on, stop running and rest for a few days. Once the pain is completely gone, you can slowly resume running.

At the first sign of an atypical pain (discomfort that worsens during a run or causes you to alter your gait), take three days off. Substitute light walking, bicycling, or another cross-training activity if pain free. On the fourth day, run half your normal easy-day distance at a slow comfortable pace. If your run is pain-free, you can try running a little farther the next day. If you are still pain-free, continue easing back into your normal routine. If not, take another three days off, then repeat the process to see if it works the second time around. If not, you’ve got two options: Take more time off, and/or schedule an appointment with a sports medicine specialist.

Strength Training Strength training helps to keep your body properly aligned while you are running. It is particularly important to strengthen the core and the hip muscles. When you strengthen the hips—the abductors, adductors, and gluteus maximus—you increase your leg stability all the way down to your ankles while also helping to prevent knee injuries. You don’t want to train for bulging muscles. You need just enough core, hip, and lower-leg strength training to keep your pelvis and lower-extremity joints properly positioned. If you don’t have muscle balance, then you lose the symmetry, and that’s when problems are likely to develop.

Stretching Stretching should be an important component to any runner’s routine. Runners tend to be tight in predictable areas (most notably the hamstrings and calf muscles) and in turn, they get injured in and around those areas. Hitting the road after you just spent eight hours curled up in bed or parked behind a desk can shock your system. Do not do static stretches (holding an elongated muscle in a fixed position for 30 seconds or longer) before running. Use a dynamic warmup before launching into your run. A dynamic warmup prepares your body for the demands of running by increasing core body temperature, improving range of motion, and boosting blood flow to the big muscles you'll rely on most while running—your glutes, quads, and hamstrings. A proper dynamic warmup will allow you to train hard and be less vulnerable to injury. Also, research shows that a dynamic warmup improves quadriceps strength and hamstring flexibility, which can carry over to stronger running performance.

Static Stretching is best done after a run or on recovery days. An important note about stretching after long runs (longer than 15 miles): Do not stretch immediately following your run. Your muscles have hundreds of micro-tears in them and stretching them could turn some of these into macro-tears, causing significant damage. Instead, cool down, take a shower, eat a good meal and drink plenty of fluids. Then it is okay to stretch later in the day.

What every ATHLETE (yes that’s you) should know in order to avoid injury 10% Rule

1.Never increase your volume by more than 10% per week 2.Always warm up with easy cardio before your ever stretch for a MINIMUM of 10 minutes at 50-60% of max HR. The more intense the workout the more of a warm up you will need 3.10% of your total volume of training should involve functional training like lateral movement patterns, balance exercises, and dynamic stretches in an effort to optimize performance and avoid injury. This is best before and after each workout. 4.If you are attempting to change your form apply the 10/10/10 method. For 10 days practice the new form for 10 minutes in front of the mirror twice a day. 5.On a super hot humid day (above 86 degrees and higher than 80% humidity) add almost 10% additional time to your normal pace. 6.Ice for acute injuries and heat for a chronic injury. It’s best to apply Ice or heat for 10 minutes every hour 7 When you change any equipment, like shoes, bike saddle, or bike you should ease gradually into using the new equipment for the first 10 days. If you have a 5 mile run and you are wearing new shoes then just run 2 miles and change shoes for the remainder, gradually increasing the volume in which you use the new equipment each workout for the first 10 days. 8.Drink your body weight - here in hot humid Fl in the summer time and as active as you are you should drink your body weight in ounces of water a day so if you weigh 120 lbs you should drink 120 ounces of water a day. During training of 60 minutes or more, START with 10% of your daily water goal per hour. 9.If you are coming back from an injury (more than a week off from training) you should not do any speed work until you have at least 4-6 easy effort training sessions under your belt and 4+6 =10 so there you go the 10% rule is in effect. 10.Training with the use of a heart rate monitor is essential. Your maximum HR is a bio marker and has nothing to do with your age or your fitness level. If you have been accurately tested for your maximum heart rate this means that if you are running at 80% of max HR you will then FEEL like you are at 80% of perceived maximum effort. Typically your effort from run to bike and run to swim will vary by 10%. So if you are biking at 80% of max HR then you will feel like you are at 90% of perceived maximum effort. And if you are swimming at 80% of max HR it will feel like 90% of perceived maximum effort. Trust me on this. Note the better condition you are in for each discipline, the lower this 10% gap is.

10 more tips! 1.Get a stick. Use a massage stick to activate your muscles as part of your warm up routine 2.For optimal recovery or problem tight muscles use a foam roller as part of your post workout routine 3.Coconut water (the real stuff) is the healthiest thing you can drink when you need more than water. 4.Know the difference between pain and discomfort. I consider something painful when it causes me to alter my normal form. If you feel a nagging pain stop and take 24 hours off of all activity you do in which you feel the pain. If pain persists then take 48 hours off. You may need to take 10 days off to get rid of a nagging pain. You don’t want the nagging pain to turn into an injury. 5.When feeling under the weather it’s best to exercise at low intensity 50-70%maxHR or 50-70% of perceived maximum effort. 6.When you are on antibiotics do not do any speed work or explosive exercises like plyometrics as antibiotics can temporarily compromise the integrity of the tendons and ligaments so risk of injury is greater 7.When feeling a virus coming gargle with salt water every hour to fight it off 8.Sleep is as important as training. As an athlete you need 8-9 hours of solid sleep per night 9.Recover with plant protein like salted raw nuts, raw fruits and veggies after a workout. Daily you need to eat 4 fist size servings of raw fruit and 5 fist size servings of raw vegetables. 10.Reserach states one should replace running shoes every 300-500 miles to avoid injury. Personally, I replace my shoes every 500 miles.
