EDITORIAL

Dear friends of Alliance française,
As part of this year’s francophone celebrations, the Alliance française has the honour to welcome the Electro Bamako (France/Mali) music band, a double dialogue between man and the machine, between the West and Africa, with the feel of a "punky afro electro party ». We welcome you to discover this major Francophone event as well as a wealth of activities through these pages and on our Facebook page. Anne Nivat is an award-winning war reporter and author. She will honour us with her presence in Dar es Salaam for a Dialogue/Debate on « Journalists in times of peace and war ». Do not miss the AFD Photo Exhibit « 60 solutions against climate change ». Through 21 pictures from the famous photographer Yann Arthus Bertrand, the exhibit demonstrates different actions taken in order to preserve natural resources, provide more efficient access to drinking water, improve energy efficiency and develop renewable energies. No need to introduce the famous visual artist Salum Kambi anymore ! Continuously exhibiting around the world, he will share his lastest works with us in April. MAREMA, winner of the RFI Discovery Awards 2014 and upcoming Senegalese artist, will be the main guest of our now-famous Barazani. Finally, why not discover or rediscover the movie « Les Quatre Cents Coups», François Truffaut’s masterpiece which has become legendary.
See you soon !

As the story begins, the Vikings are depressed because in raid after raid they find the locations devoid of people. Cryptograf, an advisor to Viking chief Timandahaf, says that the enemies are always gone because, “Fear gives them wings”. Timandahaf excitedly concludes that they must find a “Champion of Fear”, who can teach them to be great cowards so they can fly, making them invincible. The chief says he’ll give anything to whoever can bring him this Champion of Fear. Cryptograf hatches a secret plan to seize power and tells the chief they’ll find the Champion of Fear in Gaul. During a typical day in the Gaulish village, chief Vitalstatistix announces the imminent arrival of his nephew Justforkix, who is to be trained to be a man. When Justforkix arrives from Parisium, he doesn’t look like warrior material. He uses his bird SMS (Shortmessageservix) to send messages to his “babes”. Besides chasing girls, he’s into hi-tech, nightlife, and dancing and he’s a vegetarian, much to the dismay of Obelix, who can’t get him to try wild boar.

Dalia wants to launch an art gallery; she refuses to travel with her fiancé when he lands a job in Malaysia. Boisterous Ahlam Rida comes to Cairo from the countryside and gets a job in the ladies’ room at a mall; she has no ambitions beyond this menial task; romance strikes with a mall security officer. Ibtesam, an assistant nurse, wants a promotion and seeks the support of a doctor at the hospital where she works. Weaving together these and other stories of romantic involvement is Asham – ‘hope’ in Arabic – an ambitious young man who works in the streets selling children’s toys and handing out flyers. These characters, from varied social classes and backgrounds, have different dreams and ambitions depending on the state of their lives before and after the revolution. Director Maggie Morgan captures the pulse of everyday Cairo, reflecting the hopes of many Egyptians through her carefully sculpted characters.

It is April 1974 and Julie Dujonc-Renens, young feminist journalist and the cunning Joseph-Marie Cauvin, leading reporter for the Swiss radio, have been sent to Portugal to investigate Switzerland’s aid to poor countries. Sparks fly during the bus trip with Bob, sound engineer approaching retirement. The projects financed by Switzerland prove to be calamitous and the workers’ revolution that suddenly breaks out doesn’t help, obliging our heroes to disregard first the radio’s management, and then their own codes of conduct

Antoine Doinel (Jean-Pierre Leaud) is a 13-year-old boy who keeps getting into trouble at school. His parents do their best to keep him in line but lack understanding. After being found out and punished for skipping classes, he runs away from home and spends a night on the streets. Reconciliation with his parents seems to offer hope, until he’s caught red-handed in the act of stealing a typewriter. His mother hands him over to the authorities who send him to a reform school. From here he makes another break for freedom, but, standing on the shore, looking out to sea, he finds himself alone with nowhere left to run to.

Kambi has been able to bring out a total different approach to canvas oil painting by his technique, using either a palate knife or a fine brush, sometimes both. He loves painting women as he strongly feels that women in Africa sacrifice a lot for the family lives. He is a member of the Wasanii arts group. He has been exhibiting his art among other places in the Netherlands, Sweden and naturally in Tanzania. In 2004 he was selected for the African Art Festival in Rome, Italy. The same year one of his paintings was chosen for the reception building of the State House, Dar es Salaam. In summer 2008 his paintings were exhibited by Shambala Gallery in Denmark which is working closely with the Czech Embassy in Copenhagen. Salum Kambi is currently in the USA.

6 Power is the contemporary dance group organized by Muda Africa dance students in their first year of studies 2014.
Their choreography titled ‘Chair’ symbolizes authority and power. Most politicians want the chair for their own benefits. And to get the ‘Chair’ is still hard work. Be careful when you select a leader. Look at their ability to work and make sure they are not selfish.

Far from being yet another artist, Marema is a new gain for our universal musical heritage.
Born in Dakar, from a Mauritanian father and Senegalese mother, the cultural mixes are very much part of her identity. His life experience turned her into a natural fighter. In her family universe, she was soon rocked by acoustic music of Tracy Chapman that her mom is a fan. As a young child Marema sings. As a young adult, Marema starts composing, writing and singing her own repertoire.
Marema on stage is a gift of simplicity, ease and fullness. She mastered it so well from the beginning that very quickly she was invited to be opening act for internationally renown artists, such as : Imany, Carlou D, Omar Pene, Viviane Ndour. Since then, Marema keeps on gratifying her public with beautiful performances, enhanced by sublime lyrical and acoustic wanderings.

A group of animators are in their study trying to make a shadow puppet show with fables from different historical periods, collecting information about dresses, architecture and the style of the different eras. They come up with six fairy-tales: The princess of Diamonds, the Boy and the Fig Tree, The witch, The Old Lady’s Cape, The Crunch Queen and the Fabulo, and Prince & Princess. The discussions of the animators are intercalated between each story. As the old fables, they have a moral message and are very sweet, but they are very naughty and funny. Beware.
