Welcome to the 12th Annual

Circles of Caring Conference

The Child Care Development Group, in partnership with the Child Care Professional Development & Training Society of Richmond, is excited to welcome you to the 2019 Circles of Caring Conference. Over the last 12 years, many hands have been involved with building and developing the Circles of Caring Conference into the amazing opportunity it is today.

The Circles of Caring Conference has been, and continues to be, a terrific opportunity for those involved in the care and development of infants to school age children to learn, connect and be inspired. This conference offers a variety of inspiring workshops that bring in presenters from all over the community including this year’s keynote speaker Dr. Kimberly Schonert-Reichl.

CIRCLES OF CARING CONFERENCE 6

This workshop will empower educators to rediscover their voice and meaning when working with young children. It will offer a deeper connection to the power of communication and listening to the children. Educators will have an opportunity to define their image of the child and collaborate with the children to develop a rich environment.

A1 Promoting School-Aged Children’s Social and Emotional Competence and Learning: Moving from Theory and Research to Practice [School Age]

In this interactive session, Dr. Schonert-Reichl will present recent innovations in the field of social and emotional learning (SEL), and describe research documenting the critical role that self-regulation, social and emotional understanding, and empathy play in school-aged children’s development. Next, Kim will describe several of the SEL initiatives in Canada and the US that are taking place, and highlight her own recent research evaluating universal social and emotional competence promotion programs developed from research and theory in the fields of kindness, mindful attention awareness, SEL, and positive psychology. She will facilitate a strengths-based inquiry into school-aged children’s social and emotional well-being, and related trends, including the promotion of self-regulation, empathy, and resiliency. Kim will also discuss the practical strategies for creating a caring environment, promoting educator’s well-being and social and emotional skills, and the schools and other contexts, including after-school time. The session will include a discussion of key aspects of social and emotional development and explore approaches in across different contexts, including schools, to improve well-being outcomes in school-aged children.

Emily spent her childhood exploring the forest behind her home creating stories of shipwrecks, fairies and witches. Kate spent her childhood catching frogs, digging for clay, and building snow forts in Saskatchewan. They are both the lead Educators at Terra Nova Nature School operated by Thompson Community Association and have twenty plus years working as Early Childhood Educators.

A3 The Reflective Lens: What Do You See? [Early Childhood]

Consider the microscope, telescope, binoculars, and kaleidoscope! How do you look at your teaching practice? Presenters will share their own experiences - and challenges! - of looking forward to a vision of their centre's future; holding on to the best of their school traditions; all while maintaining the balance of day-to-day living well with young children. This workshop will include theoretical, playful and experiential opportunities for learning.

Participants will consider and reflect upon their past, current and future teaching practices and develop concrete strategies for inspiring and renewing their work.

About the Presenters: Emily Vera and Kate Dawson

We will explore materials and tasks that support the development of early numeracy in three - six year olds. Current cognitive science and learning trajectories will ground playful mathematical experiences that focus on foundational mathematical ideas such as counting, quantity, shape and pattern. Connections to finding math in our lives will also be a focus as we consider what it means to be mathematically curious and a numerate citizen. About the Presenter: Janice

Novakowski

Janice is currently a district teacher consultant for the Richmond School District in the areas of mathematic and curriculum. She has held many teaching positions including at the preschool, K-12 and university levels. Janice is passionate about playful, provocative learning experiences for adults and children.

A5 Pedagogical Leadership – A Roadmap to Organisational Change! IF We Can Do It – YOU Can Too [Early Childhood]

Come and hear how we made a commitment to change the way we work with young children and how that changed things for the Educators, the children and families, and how it ultimately changed us! We will look at vision, values, actions, intentions and practicalities in implementing an emergent, inquiry-based curriculum that moved our organisation into a place of authenticity (and a few of the bumps we had along the way). If you are ready to lead change - this workshop is for YOU.

About the Presenters: Nicky Byres, Jennifer Chen & Helen Lo

Nicky Byres, Executive Director and Jennifer Chen and Helen Lo, Program Directors lead a large non-profit (6 locations, 60 staff) to deliver an emergent, inquiry-based curriculum in the midst of all the busyness of operating child care. They seek a deeply authentic experience for their Educators and the Children and Families in their care.

Screen reader support enabled.

A6 Troubleshooting Trio: Flow, Choice and Skills in Child Care Programs [All]

Behavioural and logistical roadblocks in child care programs are expectedly pervasive, especially during transitions between activities. Indeed, children are more likely to display undesired behaviour when forced to wait or when uncommitted to a task. Instead of focusing on behaviours, this workshop will explore ways to troubleshoot typical child care challenges by using a trio of guiding principles: finding flow, creating choice, and supporting skills development.

About the Presenters: Dustin Ng and Emmett Martyniuk

Dustin Ng has worked in child care programs for nearly two decades across nearly all age groups. He considers himself a “play specialist” when it comes to working with children and loves challenging children and adults alike to think critically. A decade working in childcare and a Life Coaching Diploma allow Emmett Martyniuk to deliver engaging workshops fostering awareness and new perspectives. Emmett believes that well-rounded caregivers will develop well-rounded children and that being aware of how to connect with a child can make all the difference. Dustin and Emmett are currently Child Development Coordinators with community centres in Richmond.

P6 To Celebrate or Not to Celebrate [All]

Talking and thinking about holidays in early childhood programs is a "hot topic". There is an increasing diversity of children, families, and staff who make up our programs. A lot of us have ideas of how to celebrate holidays, or some of us think we shouldn’t. There are some centres that choose ‘not to celebrate’, and others that try to celebrate all the holidays. As an industry, we need to discuss whether "to celebrate or not to celebrate".

About the Presenter: Sarah McCarthy

Sarah created ECE Connect in 2015 with the idea of connecting early childhood educators together, and offering workshops that she feels are needed in the field. Sarah holds a Bachelor of Science in Education and Training, a diploma in Early Childhood Education and Montessori (0-12 years), and a certificate for Children with Special Needs.
