March hasn’t always been the

third month of the year. In the ancient Roman calendar, it was the year’s first month. Beginning the year in March makes sense because it is when new growth starts after the “dead” of the winter. March’s name comes from martius, meaning “the month of Mars.” (Mars was the Roman god of war.) The Anglo-Saxons called the month hyld monath, which means “stormy month,” and hraed monath, meaning “rugged month.”

Blarney Stone Myths

Throughout its long history, the Blarney Stone has been the subject of countless myths that over time have been retold and accepted as fact. According to one story, the Blarney Stone was actually Jacob’s Pillow brought by the prophet Jeremiah to Ireland, where it became the Lia Fáil, or Stone of Destiny, used in the inauguration ceremony of kings and queens. Another tale claims that it was St. Columba’s deathbed pillow on the island of Iona before it was moved to mainland Scotland, where it became the Scottish Stone of Destiny. Still others attribute Biblical significance to the stone, saying it had been brought to Ireland from the Crusades. David hid behind it while running from King Saul, and Moses struck it with his staff to release the life-sustaining water supply to Israelites fleeing slavery in Egypt. The McCarthy clan has the strongest connection to the Blarney Stone. According to lore, kissing the stone would bless the smoocher with the gift of eloquence. (One version mentions a drowning witch, and the other involves praying to Cliodhna, the Queen of the Banshees.) When Cormac McCarthy won an important court case, he made sure the stone was installed in the castle’s wall. The blessing of sweet talking would come in handy when Queen Elizabeth I (daughter of Henry VIII) tried repeatedly to get McCarthy to turn over the titles of his land to the crown. He honored the queen of England and Ireland with praise and flattery, offering her his total allegiance while at the same time ignoring her acquisition wishes. Exasperated, Queen Elizabeth I called out his patronizing yet uncooperative speech as “blarney.” In 2014, geologists from the University of Glasgow provided some much-needed clarification of the stone’s heritage. By studying a razor-thin, microscopic slide of the stone, they were able to determine that it dated back more than 300 million years. Both the limestone and the fossil fragments embedded in it are native to southern Ireland. This finding went against the conventional wisdom that the stone had come from Scotland. Although most of the myths surrounding the Blarney Stone are either complete fabrications or extreme exaggerations, they do not deter the hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. In fact, the Blarney Stone is one of the top tourist destinations in all of Europe and one that appears on many bucket lists the world over.

Truth or Blarney? 1. Ireland is approximately half the size of Arkansas. Truth. Ireland’s total land area is 27,135 square miles (70,280 square kilometers). Arkansas is approximately 53,182 square miles. Ireland is about the size of South Carolina.

2. If you take your eyes off a leprechaun, he will disappear forever. Truth. According to legend, once you capture a leprechaun, be sure to keep your eyes on him. If you look away and take your eyes off a leprechaun, he will be gone when you look back.

3. Al Jolson’s signature tune was “Danny Boy.” Blarney. His signature tune was “Sonny Boy.” English lawyer and lyricist Frederic Weatherly wrote the words to “Danny Boy” in 1910. Although the lyrics were originally written for a different tune, Weatherly modified them to fit the tune of “Londonderry Air” in 1913 after his sister-in-law in the U.S. sent him a copy of the music.

4. According to legend, Mrs. Murphy’s cow knocked over the lantern and caused the Great Chicago Fire. Blarney. It was Mrs. O’Leary’s cow, not Mrs. Murphy’s cow.

5. If you kiss the Blarney Stone, you might spill the beans. Truth. When you kiss the Blarney Stone, you receive the gift of gab.

6. St. Patrick was born in Ireland. Blarney. He was born in Britain and lived there until he was a teenager.

7. Bing Crosby popularized the song “Too Ra Loo Ra Loo Ral (That’s an Irish Lullaby)” in the 1944 film Going My Way. Truth. James Royce Shannon wrote the classic Irish tune in 1914.

8. The Fighting Irish is the name of the Princeton University football team. Blarney. Notre Dame’s athletic teams are the Fighting Irish. Princeton’s athletic teams are the Tigers.

9. The Irish wolfhound is the only dog breed that originated in Ireland. Blarney. There are many Irish breeds, including the Irish spaniel, Irish terrier, and Irish setter.

10. The steeplechase horse race started in Ireland. Truth. The steeplechase originated in Ireland in the 18th century. It was called “steeplechase” because the church steeple was used as a landmark to guide the riders. Today, the race course is characterized by obstacles such as fences and ditches.

11. The Irish and Scottish word loch means “channel.” Blarney. It means “lake.” Have you ever heard of the Loch Ness Monster?
