I had the chance this spring tohike part of the AppalachianTrail through the SmokyMountains of Tennessee and North Carolina. My hikecoincided with a wave ofthrough-hikers who hike thetrail from Springer Mountain,Ga., to Mt. Katahdin, Maine, taking about six months tocomplete. After spending fourdays with dierent groups of

through-hikers I kept thinking about how these hikers, who lookout for each other and have taken on this monumental feat, remind me of the boating community. I think back to times I have been helped by a fellow boater whether helping fix something or imparting knowledge. The through-hikers had thissame mentality we are all in this together. It reminded mewhy I love boating and the people that I run into at the marinas, conferences and boat shows. We recently exhibited at theAGLCA (Americas Great Loop Cruising Association) SpringRendezvous in Norfolk. The Loopers have taken on a similar

challenge as the through-hikers to circumnavigate the easternpart of the US that also takes about six months. The community, lifestyle, and camaraderie among boaters are the reasons thatMarinalife was started 15 years ago. Heres to a fun and safe summer of meeting new friends on the water.

The Marinalife team has some new things in store for you thissummer including a new and improved version of our mobile app.It is currently available (for free) for Apple users and soon forAndroid users. The new app allows you to easily find a marina, read reviews and view rates and fuel prices all on a nautical chart.Visit marinalife.com/app to learn more.

The summer issue of Marinalife is jam-packed with articles to help inspire your summer cruising from Cruising the Chesapeake Bay to Lobster Fest in Rockland, Maine. Also, read about the top dock-and-dine destinations in Massachusettsand cruise with the Trogdons as they pick their favorite waterfront bed and breakfasts in the Pacific Northwest.

We look forward to seeing everyone out on the water this summer!

Part 1 Chesapeake BayThis was one of the highlights of our trip.College friends who were married thesame year as us joined us for our 35th anniversary cruise through the ChesapeakeBay. We made it our quest to find the bestcrab cakes on the bay. We began this leg ofthe trip at Bluewater Yachting Center inhampton, Va., The surf rider restaurantwas the first of our many crab cakes!

The next day brought us to The Tides

inn in irvington, Va., We biked to TheDog and Oyster Winery and had dinnerand of course crab cakes at the Tides inn restaurant.

Zahnisers Yachting Center insolomons island, Md., was beautiful. Wetook the dinghy all around the islandwhere the topography was so interestingwith clis and lovely scenery. We enjoyedcrab cakes at stoneys seafood house.

Oxford, Md., was one of our favorites

places to explore! All of the quaint homeswere in perfect condition. Many residentspartner with local artists for a contest inwhich they paint a portion of the residentswhite fence, better known as onion tops.We stayed at the Brewer Oxford BoatYard & Marina and had crab cakes atschooners on the Creek.

st. Michaels, Md., was another fun spot with lots of shops and restaurants. We docked at st. Michaels Marina, which

This journey took us to many ports of call, traveling over 5,500 nautical milesfrom Florida to Maine and back. The daunting task of making all of these marina reservations was made easy withthe help from the Marinalife staff. The length of this cruise created a new rhythm for us which leads to the boatsname, Rhythm n Blues. Now hop aboard as we take you through our journey from the Chesapeake Bay to Maine.

was an easy walk to everything. We actually had two crab cake tastings: TheCrab Claw Restaurant and St. MichaelsCrab & Steakhouse.

Annapolis was bustling with energy! We stayed at Annapolis City Dock and we were in the thick of the action. It wasfun exploring the Naval Academy and allof the shops and restaurants that align thestreets. Steps away from the boat was thewinning crab cake, located at Dock StreetBar & Grill!

We finished off the Chesapeake Baywith stops in Chestertown, Rock Hall and Georgetown before cruising throughthe C & D Canal toward Atlantic City,N.J. Then we made our way to the BigApple for an extended stay.

Part 2 Long IslandNew York City, or should I say the BigApple, will rate up there as one of themost memorable days of our trip. Bringingthe boat right up to the Statue of Libertywas amazing. We wanted to sing GodBless America at the top of our lungs!

After a night at Danfords Hotel &Marina in Port Jefferson (locally known as Port Jeff ), we traveled to Mitchell ParkMarina in Greenport and on our way wepassed Plum Island. For all of you NelsonDeMille fans (novelist) you will know exactly where we are. Mitchell Park Marina is located in town and we enjoyeda nice walk to Claudios for dinner (a Greenport landmark the oldest family-owned restaurant in the UnitedStates since 1870). The next day we bikedto Kontokosta Winery and did a wine tasting at this beautiful winery overlookingLong Island Sound. There are at least 50 vineyards in this region, and we havebeen surprised by the quality of the wines.

We left Greenport and had a shorthour and a half ride to Sag Harbor, an upscale little town that is not far from the Hamptons with very nice shops and restaurants. We had lunch at PageRestaurant and enjoyed the very goodgrilled octopus!

Our final stop on Long Island wasMontauk. Montauk Yacht Club is verynice with two pools, restaurants, a beachand a spa. After watching the sunset, wewere greeted with a Supermoon.

Midshipmen at the Naval Academy during their daily noon formation. This formation is done weather permitting Monday through Friday of the academic year before lunch. The Naval Academy started doing

Part 3 Rhode Island to MaineNewport, R.I. is a city steeped in historyand architecture. We docked at NewportHarbor Hotel & Marina and toured twoof the Summer Cottages as they arecalled. The Cliff Walk was a wonderfulwinding walk that follows the coastline for3 1/2 miles. Seeing the cliffs and the watercrashing onto the rocks was quite a thrill!

We were happy that we docked at The Black Dog Wharf because MarthasVineyard has a nice historic streets withshops and a few restaurants.

Nantucket, Mass., has wonderful walk-ing and bike paths throughout the entireisland. We loved seeing the residential areawith the immaculately restored homes onthe cobblestone streets. The yards are lushand manicured with an abundant amountof hydrangeas in every color imaginable! We docked at Nantucket Boat Basin.

In Boston, we stayed at ConstitutionMarina located on Boston Harbor

conveniently situated on the FreedomTrail. Boston Commons is unique withthe swan boats and Newbury Street, thehistoric high-end shopping district withlots of outdoor cafes. We took the dinghydown the Charles River. It was the firsttime we have ever done locks in a dinghy! From the water we saw Harvard, BostonUniversity and MIT.

We left Boston and headed to Newburyport, Mass., a wonderful littletown. Arriving during their big YankeeHomecoming Festival, the streets werelined with white tents and the park hadconcerts during the day and fireworks atnight. We tied up at Newburyport HarborMarina and had delightful dinner at CeiaKitchen Bar a small European restaurant.

The next day we headed to Boothbay,Maine. On our way we saw a water spoutand, wouldnt you know, it was a whale! To be so close to such a huge creature was awe inspiring! The scenery and temperatures changed quite a bit as wemade our way into the harbor. It was absolutely beautiful!

You know you have entered Maine whenyou can walk across the water on lobstertrap buoys. It requires major maneuveringskills to make your way through the waterways and harbors. We took thedinghy out the next day to the town ofBath. Again, another amazing day of

beautiful scenery spotting seals on ourjourney. The dockmaster asked us wherewe had gone and when we told him Bath,he said, You took that little dinghy throughHells Gate, thats adventurous! (I guessthats what they call that section of 6-knotrapids that we had to go through!)

We were in Rockland, Maine for a few days. We were able to dinghy over to Rockport (not to be confused with Rockland) and also to Owls Head Point.Very beautiful coastal countryside. Lots of art galleries for visitors to explore inRockland.

We finally arrived to Bar Harbor, Maine and met our daughter Stephanieand her husband John. They hikedPrecipice which is the most difficult hike in all of Acadia National Park. My wife and I had already hiked Precipice 20 years ago so we had our bragging rights! The guidebook saysclimbers should expect an experiencephysically strenuous and mentally stimulating. We decided that might be too tiring. The next day we all hiked Acadia Mountain together, which theguidebook called moderately strenuous.Lets just say their definition of moderateis a little different from Kristis! ml

some linguists say Michilimackinacmeans great turtle in the ottawa nation language and refers to the shape of Mackinac island. But the ottawa tribe, who settled on Mackinac island beforetheir first contact with Europeans, say they found a small tribe already living on that island and their tribal name wasMi-shi-ne-macki naw-go.

Thats why Mackinac is spoken asMackinaw, unless youre a fudgie andunfamiliar with the local pronunciation.today its the fudgies dollars spent at thefudge shops and riding on horse drawnwagons around Mackinac island that drivethe summer tourist economy from FathersDay to Labor Day.

This popular great Lakes destination islocated at the crossroads of history for theupper Midwest. Michilimackinac has witnessed French Jesuit missionaries andvoyageurs, the development of the beaverfur trade and the competition betweenEngland and France to be the dominantcolonial power in north America. Butwhen did this eight-square-mile islandfirst become a summer resort destination? That occured during the America VictorianEra after the civil War.

Before the spider web of railroad lines were built in the great Lakes region, the primary mode of transportation for

commerce, immigration and businesstravel were the inland seas themselves and the Erie canal. steamboat passengerferries connected the major great Lakecities of Bualo, toronto, cleveland, Detroit, Milwaukee and chicago. As the gilded Era advanced, so did the luxurious appointments aboard these palatial intercity steamers. As an antidoteto living in the big industrial cities during

summer in the late 1800s, northernMichigan became a popular getaway forthe rich and middle class alike. A ticketaboard a coal-fired steamer from chicagoto harbor springs, Michigan was just $5, without meals and a cabin for the 24 hour trip.

Perched on a blu, withsweeping views from its 660-foot-longfront porch, the Grand was designed as a desitination resort by the owners of the Detroit and Cleveland SteamshipCompany and the Michigan Central Railroad. It was an immediate success, and a hundred years later it was designateda National Historic Landmark. In fact, all of Mackinac Island is now a NationalHistoric Landmark District, which makesit a must visit port of call for Great Lakes

cruisers with an interest in history. The best choice when arriving by boat

is to tie up at the dock at Mackinac IslandState Harbor. Why is it the best choice?Because it is the only marina on the island! The marina is part of the Michigan StatePark system and reservations should bemade well in advance either online or by phone. Although there is room to anchor in the harbor, the holding is poorand would be unsafe in a blow. The nextbest alternative for dockage is anotherMichigan State Park marina, Straits State Harbor in Mackinaw City, which

is six nautical miles southwest of the island. For sightseeing back on MackinacIsland there are ferries, leaving every halfhour throughout the day from Straits State Harbor.

Once ashore on Mackinac Island, buysome fresh hand made fudge, rent a bicycle and start your journey back in time by exploring these historical sites:

Fort Mackinac Built by the British Army just before the end of theRevolutionary War, it was belatedly turnedover to the United States many years afterthe Treaty of Paris. At the outbreak of

The Grand Hotel was opened in 1887 asa summer retreat for vacationers who

arrived by lake steamer from Chicago,Erie, Montreal and Detroit.

CApTurINg ThE ESSENCE of Victoria, British Columbia in words is almost impossible. You have to experience Victoria to fully appreciate it. Located on a protected harbor on the southern tip of Vancouver Island, it is one of the oldest cities in the pacificNorthwest, settled by the British in 1843, and is known as one of the most British cities outside England. It also ranks as one of the top cities in the world for quality oflife. As the capital of British Columbia it is well serviced by airplanes and ferries frommultiple points in the u.S. and Canada. One of the most interesting ways to arrive is by float plane Kenmore Air and harbour Air will both land you right downtown.

Victoria is very walkable, and the most popular attractions are within two miles ofthe inner harbor. The city has a rich collection of historic buildings, including the parliament Building, completed in 1897, and the Empress hotel, which opened in 1908. An interesting assortment of marine architecture can be found at FishermansWharf, where a colorful group of houseboats nestle in a cove.

Victoria has a healthy economy made up primarily of tech businesses, governmentagencies, and the tourism sector. The internationally diverse population brings with itcosmopolitan oerings restaurants and shops abound, many of which are located in a creatively restored merchant district. The well-established Chinatown neighborhood is almost as old as San Franciscos.

Set on the southern tip of Vancouver Island, the city is surrounded by natural beauty, clean air and clear water. Its abundant sunshine and mild temperatures have earned it the nickname the garden City. It enjoys relatively mild, dry weather in what is

otherwise a cool, damp area. Dont miss theButchart gardens, about a 30-minute drive north of Victoria. It is one of theworlds premier botanical displays.

With a circumnavigation distance of approximately 550 nautical miles, includingdozens of marinas and hundreds of scenic anchorages, one could spend yearsexploring Vancouver Island and not coverthe same ground twice. Victoria and Vancouver Island are a boaters paradise. ml

Part of the cultural patrimony of anycountry is its historic buildings. For manyyears Cuba neglected these importantstructures and they fell into disrepair. Realizing the significance of their history, not only for future generations but to the burgeoning tourism industry, Cubaappointed conservators for the cities ofCienfuegos and Havana. Their task was to restore the historic centers of those

cities, which were designated UNESCOWorld Heritage Sites. The work in thesouthern city of Cienfuegos on theCaribbean Sea is just about complete, while the restoration of La Habaa Vieja (Old Havana) is ongoing.

Havana is experiencing a renewal ofspirit, entrepeneurship and possibilities. While visitors from Canada, Europe andLatin America have had the opportunity

to see this first hand in recent years, it isnow time for Americans to reestablish thefriendship forged between Cuba and theUnited States, which was an outcome ofthe Spanish-American War in 1898. ml

CRUISING WITH > TONYA & RICK ANTLE

LOG DAY 1 We left from PleasureCove Marina in Pasadena, Md., in mid-May. They stored and maintained ourboat for the winter and they prepped herfor departure. Their team was great to workwith and handled our punch list perfectly.

Our son Brian and his wife Amandahopped aboard for our first leg fromPasadena to the C&D Canal. This manmade canal is busy with commercialbarges, but is also pleasure boater friendly. In Chesapeake City, we docked at Schaefers Canal House with side-tiealong the banks of the canal. The marina

had full accommodations along with livemusic and delicious traditional Marylandfare, consisting of delicious crab pasta and local oysters on the half shell.

LOG DAY 2 Today we cruisedfrom Chesapeake City, continuingthrough the C&D Canal. The Canaldropped us into the Delaware Bay, wherewe continued to South Jersey Marina in Cape May, N.J. about a six-hour excursion. This marina oered full boatservices, a shuttle to town and excellentsuggestions for dining and taking in the

charm of this historic community. We walked the town center, stopping fordrinks at a local watering hole called theUgly Mug, then had an amazing dinner atthe Marion Inn, known for its prime rib.

LOG DAY 3 Departing at 8:45 a.m., we headed oshore and ran directly north for three hours, 39 nauticalmiles to Atlantic City. We arrived just intime to place our bets for AmericanPharoah running in the 140th PreaknessStakes. We tied up right in front of thecasino at the Golden Nugget Marina

a summer to rememberBY TONYA AND R ICK ANTLE

Our summer boating season has begun! My husband Rick and I cruise on Artemis, our Oshore 54 Pilothouse, which we purchased in Ft. Lauderdale in 2014 with plans of completing the Great Loop over a three-year period. Last year was our first year cruising and it consisted of four legs beginning in Ft. Lauderdale in March and ending in the Chesapeake Bay by September.

For the 2015 summer season, we will be working our way north from the Chesapeake Bay, taking a detour from the Great Loop, toward Maine then back to the Hudson River, finishing the season in WinterHarbor, N.Y. I am looking forward to New York City, the Boston Harbor for 4th of July, Acadia NationalPark and then The U.S. Open in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.

Tonya and Ricks boat, Artemis,is taking them on an adventurefrom Maryland to Maine.

where marina guests can access all of thehotel amenities. We took a quick cab rideto the Atlantic City Boardwalk to take inall of the sights and sounds that it has to oer. In the evening, one of our othersons Anthony joined us for a lovely dockside family dinner at Chart HouseSeafood Restaurant. Atlantic City lived upto its colorful reputation as all three kidscame back to the boat with stories of colddice and empty wallets.

LOG DAY 4 Leaving AtlanticCity, we cruised north on the Atlantic, three miles o the Jersey Shore towardManasquan, N.J. We docked at HomansMarina, a full service marina, oeringhigh-speed fuel pumps and clean restroomfacilities. Rick and I took a three-milewalk around the small and sleepy commuter town that was filled with newVictorian-style homes that were rebuiltafter Hurricane Sandy. Dinner thatevening was delicious at the onsite marinarestaurant, Waypoint 622. Rick enjoyedthe house specialty, pork chops with clamsand sausage in a tomato broth.

LOG DAY 5 We were met by four- to -six foot swells and heavy fog during our departure from Homans Marina. It took about four hours to go 44 nautical miles to reach the New YorkHarbor. But once we went under the Verrazano Bridge and were in sight of the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattanskyline, pride and patriotism filled us andall thoughts of the rough crossing wereforgotten. Also, standing majestically inthe overcast sky was the new World TradeTower. We continued up the HudsonRiver to see Manhattan Island by waterbefore turning back and arriving at Liberty Landing Marina in Jersey City,N.J. It was the perfect location to catchthe ferry to Manhattan. After a pleasantstroll viewing all the sites, Rick and Idined in the Financial District at Del-monico Restaurant, known for its powerdinners for Wall Streets elite.

LOG DAY 6 Waking up and seeing New York City through the windshield of Artemis was quite a sight totake in. We headed up the East Riverpassing all the major tourist sites of Manhattan on our port side and Brooklynon our starboard side. With only an occasional tugboat and barge, the channelwas clear for cruising. Artemis cruised

steadily to Oyster Bay on the Long IslandSound. The scenery changed dramaticallyfrom cityscape to forested regal mansionestates. We were now entering GreatGatsby country.

Oyster Bay Marine Center was exactlywhat East Coast boating should be. Beautiful classic sailing vessels dotted thebay. We docked Artemis next to the famousketch Knickerbocker, a 117-foot luxuryyacht named after the owners of the NBAKnicks. To our starboard we had a 57-foot

commuter yacht Vendetta, which has beenfeatured in several yachting magazines, asthe reincarnation of the Vanderbilt, Whitney and Pulitzer families mode ofcommuting to lower Manhattan in the1920s and 30s. Oh, but I failed to give you a hint, its owner is the Piano Man.

We took a dingy ride around OysterBay to take in the beautiful landscape and

manicured estates before walking a quickquarter mile into a darling seaport village. We ate dinner at a local favorite, Jack Halyards Tavern, that oered a delicioussushi bar with live music.

Tomorrow we depart for Sag Harborand then on to Block Island for the weekend. Look for us on the waterways aswe cruise toward Maine this summer! ml

once we went under the Verrazano Bridge and were in sight of the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline,

pride and patriotism filled us and all thoughts of the rough crossing were forgotten.
