✥ Summer Camp (June 15-18) - It's the best time of the year for 3rd-6th graders! Camp includes hiking, art, recreation, swimming, archery, ca-noeing, nature, and campfires. Campers stay in cabins with trained counselors. There are mod-ern bathroom facilities with showers. The food is great. Bring a friend or meet some new friends at camp. Held at Camp Bird in Crivitz. Register by May 13 or call to check on availabil-ity. Registration form is available on our web-site.

Take it a step further and participate in several dairy promotional ac-tivities through the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board. Complete the form in your club promo-tional packet. Or…put up a 4-H promotional display at Breakfast on the Farm-June 26th. Call the UW-Extension Office.

ADD/DROP PROJECT(S) DEADLINE

Remember, May 1 was the deadline to add or drop pro-jects. This is also the deadline for new 4-H member en-rollments if they wish to exhibit at this year’s Fair.

CLUB ROTATION FOR ACHIEVEMENT DAY PLANNING

Since 2012, 4-H clubs have had the opportunity to assist with the planning and facilitation of our county-wide Achievement Day (normally held in November). Each year 2-3 clubs will work together to plan, set up & or-ganize the pot luck celebration. This is a chance for clubs to work together and get creative! The 4-H Lead-er's Association provides financial support for this event. The rotation schedule is listed below.

If a particular year doesn't work for your club, please switch with another club and call the office to let us know you have switched. A letter with details and re-sponsibilities will be sent to club leaders about 3 months prior to Achievement Day.

UNCASHED FAIR CHECKS

The Fair Board is asking that anyone who has not cashed their checks from last year’s fair, please do so as soon as possible.

OUR 4-H POPCORN POPPER NEEDS AN EXAM!

Do you or someone in your club have some mechanical skills? Our 4-H popcorn popper is in need of an exami-nation and possibly some repairs. If fixed, this little ma-

chine is willing to travel to your next 4-H fundraiser, fes-tival, or anywhere else your 4-H club would like to take it. Call Lisa at the UW-Extension Office if you can help.

RAFFLE PRIZES AND TICKETS

If clubs haven’t already, please contact Barb Kolosowski by June 1st to let her know what your club is donating for the raffle. May do more than one per club but just need to let her know what the clubs are giving. Clubs should have their tickets available by May meetings for members to start selling. Any questions, call Barb at (715) 927-5213. Extras available at UWEX office.

NATURE / HORTICULTURE PROGRAMS

Unless stated, programs are held at Harmony Arbore-tum Demonstration Gardens located 7 miles west of Ma-rinette on Hwy 64, then ½ mile south on County E.

• May 4, Garlic and Onion Family Vegetables, 6-7:30 pm. Review proper spring mgt of garlic and what to consider for onions, leeks and shallots.

✖ May 5, Froggy Night Hike, 6:15-7:45 pm. Listen to and learn to identify frog songs and more. Held at Hem-lock Curve Nature Trail, travel south on West Front St. which turns into Hale Road. After a few miles, turn left onto Harbor Rd., then left onto Badger Rd. For more info., contact the Land office at 715-732-7780.

• May 7, Spring Wildflower Walk, 9:30-11:30 am. Take a guided tour of spring wildflowers. Good walking shoes and insect repellant recommended.

• May 10, Selecting Perennial Flowers, 6-7:30 pm. Pleasing gardens depend on selection of hardy, high-performing species and cultivars.

• May 26, Growing Vegetables in Containers, 6:30-8 pm. Proper selection, care and placement needs to take place for containers to be successful.

JUNE DAIRY MONTH WINDOW DISPLAY

Window displays are evaluated on message conveyed - 20 points; title and lettering - 10 points; attracts atten-tion - 20 points; holds interest - 15 points; appearance - 15 points; suitable subject - 10 points; and workmanship - 10 points. The main theme is ‘Wisconsin. Home of America's Dairyland,’ a simple, direct message. Remem-ber, all dairy products should be promoted. Submit pic-tures of your club’s window displays by June 15th. Reg-ister with the 4-H office by Fri., May 27.

NEW CLOVERBUD ACTIVITIES AVAILABLE

Spice up your cloverbud meetings with some new activi-ties! Learn about bugs while playing Bug Bingo (for 6 players). All About Pets is an activity that explores what it’s like to own different kinds of pets and their care. Cre-ate Your Own Marshmallow Rocket takes cloverbuds through making their own edible rocket while exploring the parts of a rocket and what it might be like to be an astronaut. Call the 4-H office for copies or to borrow the materials.

MARINETTE CO. BREAKFAST ON THE FARM

Sunday, June 26, Fendryk Brothers Farms, County P, Beaver, 7:30 am-noon. Rain or shine. All-you-can-eat breakfast of pancakes, eggs, sausage, cheese curds, maple syrup, applesauce, milk, coffee and ice cream. There will be a petting zoo, face painting, balloons, play area, music, and

viewing of the barn and cattle. Adult, $7; Child 5-10, $4; Child under 5 yrs. free.

WI STATE FAIR YOUTH EXPO ACTIVITY STATION OPPOR-TUNITIES

Youth are encouraged to participate during Aug. 4-14. Activity Stations are located in the Youth Expo Hall and feature free hands-on activities for young fairgoers. In-terested youth are needed to lead the Activity Stations and interact with the young Fairgoers, along with being provided the opportunity to further develop their lead-ership & communication skills while having fun. Poten-tial stations include: visual arts, juggling, science and technology, aerospace, face painting, agriculture and more. Must be 12-19 years old at time of Fair, be flexi-ble, have interests in a variety of projects, and are en-thusiastic and dependable. There is a $25/night fee and will inc. admission, lodging and three meals per day. Youth participating for one day receive $30; two or more days, they receive $40. Deadline: June 1. Call the 4-H office, if interested. COUNTY FAIR DATES

The 2016 Marinette County Fair is August 25-28. Pre-fair judging is Sat., August 20 for the dogs, cats, small ani-mals, & vet science. Fair clean-up will also be that day.

CAMP NEWS

GET READY FOR SUMMER CAMP AT CAMP BIRD!

There's no better place to be this summer than at 4-H Camp! Some new and exciting things are being planned for camp this year. •Wed.,-Sat., June 15-18 (campers grades 3-6)

Summer camp registration forms were sent with March/April’s newsletter and are due May 13. The Marinette County 4-H Leader's Association will contribute toward every 4-H member's camp fee, which is already deduct-ed from the fee listed. You can go on-line at http://marinette.uwex.edu/ or contact the 4-H office for a form. Scholarship forms for this Camp are due May 2.

CAMP LIFEGUARD NEEDED

4-H Summer Camp is still looking for a certified lifeguard for Summer Camp at Camp Bird. This is a paid position with on-site lodging and meals included. The dates are June 11 - 14 and/or June 15 - 18. Applicant must be at least 16 years old. Please contact the office immediately if you or someone you know could fill this role.

Following are the remaining meeting dates before the County Fair Dog Show for Lucky Dog Project - South. Members of the Dog Project - North are invited to attend if you would like. Meetings run from 6 pm to approx. 7:30 pm.

ATTENTION FAIR LIVESTOCK EXHIBITORS - TIME IS RUN-NING OUT

Youth exhibitors selling livestock (dairy, goat, rabbit, poultry, beef, swine, sheep) at the 2016 Marinette County Fair must attend MAQA (Meat Animal Quality Assurance) training. Exhibitors must attend the entire training to be certified.

• Thurs., May 12, at the Pound Town Hall, in Coleman, 7-8:30 pm (rescheduled from cancelled March meeting)

Register by calling the Oconto Co. UW Extension office at 920-834-6845 at least two weeks prior.

BADGER DAIRY CAMP

June 9-11. Open to youth between the ages of 12 and 18. This camp, held on the Univ. of Wisconsin Madison campus, provides an excellent opportunity for youth to get hands on experience learning how to fit and show ani-mals. DAIRY HIGH PROTEIN SHOW

The Northeast WI High Protein Show will be held Fri., June 17-18, at the Outagamie Co. Fairgrounds, in Seymour. It is open to breeders of registered dairy cattle of the Ayr-shire, Brown Swiss, Guernsey, Jersey and Milking Short-horn breeds. A great opportunity for youth exhibitors which begins Friday evening with Junior Showmanship at 7 pm. For show entry info., contact Kelly Holewinski at [email protected] or 920-822-5472. AREA ANIMAL SCIENCE DAYS

The date and location for the 2016 Northeast AASD is June 28, at Outagamie Co. Fairgrounds, Seymour. Objec-tives: To increase availability of educational opportunities in the 4-H Animal Science Projects; To increase decision making skills through judging and grading experiences; and To increase the knowledge of animals through breed-ing and market evaluation and management information. Events offered: dairy cattle evaluation, dairy showman-ship contest, dairy poster competition, meat animal eval-uation, horse judging workshop, hippology and horse poster contest. Due June 1. TWI-LIGHT SHOW SERIES

Marinette County 4-H Leader's Association

April 18, 2016

Crivitz High School

The meeting was called to order at 6:30 pm and pledges were said.

In attendance were: Lisa Witak, Dorothy Kaminski, Jennie Pil-lath, Carol Denowski, Suz Deschane, and Lisa Devine-Barribeau.

Lisa's report: Lisa is giving information to each committee chair to have the committees write a job description so others inter-ested and those on committees know what is expected in each committee. Marinette County has 4-H WI Foundation money of $50,268.04 currently. Camp registrations are starting to come in for 4-H and non-4-H members. Leaders will be exploring program goals at the next meeting regarding core values and changes to the program. Cedar Crest Ice Cream has announced their winner. April 23 will be a workshop in Marinette for teens wanting to be Entrepreneurs.

Committee Reports:

Food Stand: None

Fair Board: MAQA for those in livestock auction has been re-scheduled to May 12 7-8:30pm Pound Town Hall

Raffle: None

Awards/Trips: None

Royalty: Will meet in May.

Scholarship: Names were petitioned to the board for 5 scholar-ships. Motion by Carol to award the 5 scholarships, second by Jennie. Carried.

Motion by Jennie, second by Carol to approve the treasurer's report. Carried.

County Trip tentatively planned for 8/9/16 at state fair.

There were no entries for the demonstration and drama con-tests.

Budget for 2016-2017 was reviewed and changes made. Mo-tion made to approve changes and present to clubs by Jennie, second by Suz. Carried.

Next meeting May 16, 2016 Pound Town Hall 6:30 pm with Royalty Committee at 6 pm.
