HI-FOG®, from Marioff, is a new kind of fireprotection technology using hydraulic pressuresand small amounts of water to produce fine watermist. Systems are providing fire protection for avariety of applications – and providing higher levelsof safety to people and equipment. HI-FOGsprinkler systems are now protecting hotels, hospitals and large cruise ships worldwide wheresuperior fire suppression performance, easyinstallation and minimal water damage are keybenefits. However, different HI-FOG systems arealso being specified for applications for whichwater would not normally be used – such ascomputer rooms and machinery spaces. These haveadditional safety benefits over conventional gaseousfire protection technologies.

Protection of computer and telecoms facilities hasbeen a successful growth area for Marioff in the lastfew years. Typically, fires start under the sub-floor orin a computer cabinet, where the fire may be causedby an overheating component, and the fire retardantplastics create the potential for high concentrations ofcorrosive smoke at an early stage, which can paralysea whole room of electronic data processingequipment. Marioff have therefore developed HI-FOG computer-room systems specifically to removesmoke and the associated corrosive gases as part ofthe fire extinguishing process in the sub-floor andcomputer cabinets.

In contrast, gaseous fire protection systems mayextinguish the fire effectively (provided that theroom is sufficiently gas-tight) but they may evenmake the smoke problem worse: all the smokeremains in the room and, together with any otherdust, is effectively distributed all over the space. The new halocarbon alternative extinguishing gases may even increase the problem as thesuppression gas itself can decompose to toxic andcorrosive by-products.

Inert gases extinguish fires by reducing the oxygenlevel in the room to a very low level. Danger ofsuffocation exists if people can not be evacuatedfast enough. In contrast, during water mistdischarge, the oxygen level remains at a normallybreathable level.

Another successful application for Marioff has beenthe protection of oil fire risks in machinery spacessuch as emergency diesel engine rooms and electricalequipment rooms. In recent years, since the phasingout of halon, a popular fire protection option forthese spaces has been carbon dioxide (CO2). TheCO2 systems that are engineered properly willextinguish a fire, provided the space is sealed, but notcool it. Nevertheless, every year there are fatalitieswhen systems have been activated accidentally.Unlike CO2, the HI-FOG system can be activatedimmediately a fire is detected, rather than waitinguntil emergency personnel evacuate the space. Thesystem cools the room gently, preventingconsequential damage, and does not requireventilation shut-down and sealing of the space. Ifthere is an accidental discharge people may get wet,but not killed.

HI-FOG can replace both gaseous and traditionalwater spraying systems. Conventional sprinklers andwater-spray systems fight fires by the inefficientprocess of wetting or cooling combustible surfaces.Low-pressure mist systems are more efficient. However, HI-FOG – a high-pressure misttechnology – uses water in the most efficient way, extinguishing by using three primary mechanisms:cooling, local oxygen depletion and radiant heatabsorption to prevent the possible flash-over. HI-FOG systems produce a large number of very smalldrops with a high surface area that leads to rapidevaporation of water.

Conventional low-pressure water spray or sprinklersystems can cause much water damage. Often the

water damage is greater than the direct fire damage.Low-pressure systems can be difficult to installespecially on ‘retrofit’ projects. Gaseous systems areunsuitable for many risks because of the difficulty ofguaranteeing enclosure integrity, high recharge costsand the personnel and environmental safety issues.HI-FOG systems are at least equally efficient at firesuppression with minimal water discharge. Waterdamages to the protected facility or equipment canbe avoided. Clean-up time and costs are negligible.Tubes are small so that installation is easy and fast, particularly on retrofits. HI-FOG is tested in over5,000 full-scale fire tests. It has the approval ofseveral authorities and classification societiesworldwide. Its performance has been proven in fireson land and at sea. !
