The best entry of prime cattle of the year so far met a very firm trade for all types of cattle. Butchers’ quality cattle and more commercial cattle are in strong demand. Top price per kilo was 221p for a Limousin x steer from Mr. A.M.C. Eddy of St. Erth purchased by Chris Dale of Dales Family Butchers of Helston with premium heifer from the same farm realising 208p/kg to Harvey Bros. Butchers of St. Ives, Penzance & Newlyn. Also at 208p/kg was a 695kg Limousin x steer realising £1,446 for Messrs. W.T. Bryant & Son of St. Martin with their heaviest 733kg steer reaching £1,466, both bought by Dales Family Butchers. A third Limousin x steer over £1,400 for Jonny Bryant at 724kg making £1,441, and top value heifer also from the same farm realising £1,285, these two both going to R.J. Trevarthen Ltd of Roskrow.

An improved entry of cull cows met a continued strong trade, especially for well-covered cows, both beef and dairy. Out and out top at £1,235 and 140p/kg was a grand 882kg South Devon cow from Gwealavellan Partners of Gwithian purchased by David King of Exeter. A run of Friesians from Messrs. E.B, M.E. & W.R. Symons of Ruan High Lanes averaged a good trade with their heaviest 777kg cow at 125p/kg making top money selling at £971 to Dawn West Devon of Hatherleigh. Premium went to a lighter Friesian at 135p/kg from Messrs. W.W. James & Sons of Sancreed who saw their tonne+ Simmental bull achieve 124p/kg and £1,249 to David King.

Just over 300 store cattle forward met an excellent trade for all on offer. A grand entry of Charolais x steers from Messrs. J. & S. Trembath of Zennor saw half a dozen at 25 months old reach £1,185 with a younger bunch of four at £1,140. A bunch of mainly Aberdeen Angus x steers from Mrs. M.A. Semmens of Caerhays saw four around 21 months old at £1,010 plus a younger standout steer reaching £1,155. A lovely run of 35 Limousin and South Devon crosses from Messrs. T.F. & D.J. Crapp of Helston saw dearest five steers down to just 15 months old sell at £970 with a younger five around 9 months at £570. Young Limousin cattle from Mr. M.J.P. The leading prices below and an overall average price per head of £97; the trade speaks for itself. Whilst we have seen these strong prices before for short periods surrounding festivals, we have not enjoyed these for such a sustained period of months! Topping at £148 twice were ewes from a consignment for Mr. D. Cowell of Wendron. Cull rams peaked at £154 for a Beltex ram (pictured) from Mr. W.E. Martindale of Kehelland.
