2nd Sunday of Lent March 17, 2019

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

The wonderful thing about St Patrick’s Day, is that everyone, that wants to be, is Irish. Well that’s how I see it. I remember my first St Patrick’s Day in New York and seeing all these people of different nationalities and skin color wearing big badges with ‘kiss me I’m Irish.’ It made me very proud that so many people wanted to celebrate with the Irish what was good and wholesome about their faith and culture. I know sometimes when we celebrate too long the ‘good’ can become ‘sullied’ and the ‘wholesome’ can become ‘unwholesome.’ But isn’t that life? We start off with the best of intentions to do good and wholesome things in life and some how we sully or make unhealthy what we do. St Patrick’s first experience of Ireland wasn’t a good one; he was kidnapped and brought to Ireland and sold into slavery. The experience was despicable and by the grace of God he escaped and found his way home. For many of us we would never darken the door of Ireland again, but Patrick heard the voice of God and the call of the Irish people. He became a priest and returned to evangelize the Irish.

What jumps out at me is, when we are at our worst God is at God’s best. Ireland was at it’s worst in the 5th Century and heard the cry of the people and sent Patrick. We can change Ireland to the name of any nation, state, diocese, parish, family or person. God always listens for the cries of the people – God is continuously looking for the modern day ‘Patricks’ to send to God’s people. Will we allow ourselves to hear the call and will we go?

Our Lenten Journey I’m hoping Lent has gotten off to a good start for you. If you like me find yourself with a piece of candy in the mouth and then realize you are meant to be off candy – well that didn’t last long. The temptation is: give up, don’t start again. We have occasions to help us refocus with our daily Masses, Tuesday and Wednesday holy hours, prayer groups and stations of the cross. Let us pray for each other and encourage each other. Offer a personal invitation to a friend, neighbor or family member to come and pray together. Jesus said, ‘Where two or three are gathered I am there among them.’

Annual Catholic Appeal Last weekend we had our Annual Catholic Appeal. I know many of you have a long tradition of pledging to the appeal and I thank you. To those who are new to the parish or if you were unable to pledge in the past but are in a position now, I ask you to help in any way you can. To enable the diocese to reach the people in need it needs your support. To reach mothers with unplanned pregnancies, reaching those in prison, reaching those preparing for marriage, reaching family ministry, reaching our senior church members and reaching our young church members. The lives the Annual Catholic Appeal reaches is so far reaching and so, so necessary. I ask you, on behalf off all in need and benefit from the Annual Catholic Appeal, please consider what you can as an individual or as a family.

Reflection Make us worthy, Lord, to serve our fellow human beings throughout our diocese who live and die in poverty and hunger. Give them through our hands this day their day their daily bread, and, by our understanding love, give peace and joy. (Mother Teresa (adapted)) ~Fr. Martin

Upcoming Events

• Bins have been placed at the exits of both St. Mary’s and Holy Assumption to collect Baby Wipes, Diapers and Baby Formula for our Annual Chapter Baby Shower hosted at St. John the Baptist in Allentown. We will be collected through-out the Lenten season. The donations collected are to help First Way of Burlington County and other Pro-Life clinics in the area. In addition, if anyone was interested in attending the Baby Shower it will be Sunday, April 28th at 10am at St. John the Baptist. Tickets are $10 per person and includes a full buffet breakfast. CLASS TO MASS How wonderful it has been to have students attending mass with their class and their families there to support them each week. The Catechists have done a wonderful job preparing their students and at times presenting a project to the parish. As Mass participation grows, we hope their journey with the Lord continues beyond the classroom. Each class has been welcomed at Mass 3x this year. The next five weeks will be their last one together as a class until the fall. My hope will be their continued wish to participate at Mass over the summer. 24 HOURS OF ADORATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT WITH CONFESSION

The Diocese of Trenton is invited to celebrate “24 Hours for the Lord,” an extended period of confessions and Eucharistic adoration on Friday-Saturday of the Third Week of Lent, March 29-30. This year’s theme, suggested by the Ponti ical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelization is “Compassion.” Last year, 10 parishes of the Diocese —- at least one in each county Vicariate —- hosted a “24 Hours” with various adaptations determined by the parishes. An excerpt from Pope Francis’ Lenten Message reads: Above all, I urge the members of the Church to take up the Lenten journey with enthusiasm, sustained by almsgiving, fasting and prayer. If, at times, the lame of charity seems to die in our own hearts, know that this is never the case in the heart of God! He constantly gives us a chance to begin loving anew. One such moment of grace will be, again this year, the “24 Hours for the Lord” initiative, which invites the entire Church community to celebrate the sacrament of Reconciliation in the context of Eucharistic adoration.

In 2019, inspired by the words of Psalm 130:4, “With you is forgiveness”, this will take place from Friday, March 29 to Saturday, March 30. In each diocese, at least one church will remain open for twenty-four consecutive hours, of-fering an opportunity for both Eucharistic adoration and sacramental confession.

In Burlington County, St. Mary of the Lakes Church, 40 Jackson Rd., Medford will offer 24 Hours Adoration, which will begin after the 9:00 a.m. Mass on Friday, March 29, and will conclude with Benediction before the 9:00 a.m. Mass Saturday, March 30. On Friday, Confessions will be heard from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., and Stations of the Cross will be prayed at 7:30 p.m.

BORN ALIVE SURVIVORS PROTECTION ACT FAILS

The U.S. Senate recently failed to pass the Born-Alive Survivors Protection Act – legislation that prohibits infanticide by ensuring that a child born alive following an attempted abortion would receive the same degree of care to preserve her or his life and health as would be given to any other child born alive at the same gestational age.

Our two New Jersey senators, Sen. Cory Booker and Sen. Robert Menendez, voted against the legislation. Please join us in the Diocese of Trenton in a prayer for an end to infanticide:

Jesus, Lord of Life, transform the hearts of all elected leaders to recognize that infanticide is wrong and must not be tolerated. Open hearts and minds to recognize and defend the precious gift of every human life.
