PRESIDENTS REPORT A Refection of 2012 would be one that showed a poor result from an overall perspective. Football: - Any club that fails to make finals in any grade needs to have a good had long look at itself. We continue to struggle for player numbers and the lack of depth resulted in the senior team not achieving the results we thought at the start of the season, that it would have. - The reserves simply struggled to field a full side all year. Our under 18 side also lacked numbers but we think the restructure of the BJFL age group will help us long term. A new coach is required for seniors and reserves as both coaches will not be continuing. - In our juniors the Under 16 side made the finals and made huge improvements during the year to finish third. Netball: - The first time for many years that we did not make the finals in any grade, so again a disappointing result. The netballers have already appointed a coach for A Grade and A reserve for 2013, so they are least off and running Off Field: - From a Committee and staff aspect, we would probably see a pass mark, but we must continue to make parents aware of the need to continually introduce new people to the committee and staff to ensure the club has a healthy and expanded group of people to run it, and not a small number of the same people. - Financially again a pass mark only, the club is financially sound, with sponsorships and memberships increasing - Merger attempts were unsuccessful. It should be made a priority if football in Maryborough is to be structured properly and for the town to achieve real success on a regular basis both at regional level in the BFL, and in the MCDFL locally. - The sudden death of Tom Noonan a club icon and stalwart needs to be recognised in our report. Tom’s connection with the club goes back to the late1950’s playing in a reserves premiership, then playing and coaching locally in the Lexton and Maryborough District Leagues, then returning to coach our Juniors at Under 12 to Under 16 Level for nearly 20 years. The last 3-4 years he has been the unofficial cleaner of the clubrooms and a more than generous financial supporter of the junior’s part of the club. A terrific clubman and a sad loss - The appointment of a paid/part time secretary/treasurer should be a priority for the club. We note other clubs have either initiated an appointment or are considering one - The positives were the purchase of a defibrillator and an ice-machine. And a new heating and cooling system in the social rooms. All up these additions to our plant and equipment add up to over $14,000 and ensure that the football public and all other associated users of Princess Park faculty are provided with acceptable facilities

8

Finally thank you to Paul and his board, Steven, Casey and tom and all the volunteers of our club and the other clubs for their work to keep the league near the top of the AFL Victorian tree. Above was a report I provided to the Bendigo League in October as part of its annual Club briefings. The purpose of the report was to be as honest and pragmatic as I could. Some people see the report as painting too negative a picture, a bit like the glass that is either half full of half empty. I see is as a launching pad for us to use in 2013. I firmly believe the Club has a great future and I certainly want to be a part of it. To Matt and Joel, our joint senior coaches and Fel, our reserves coach, thank you for your work and co-operation this year. They all have indicated they will not be coaching in 2013 but will remain with the Club. Coaching is just such a difficult and time consuming job, and we thank you sincerely for your efforts. To all our wonderful volunteers, the Club thanks you for your efforts. To the sponsors, members and supporters, your contributions are essential if we are to be represented at a Regional level in football. Football merger talk is still the major issue confronting us all, and so it should be. From my point of view it is simply a question of when and how. I look forward to the completion of my term as President and thank all the committee members for their help and support. The future of the Club is bright and yes there is a lot of hard work in front of us from 2013 and beyond. The intangible reward is to see the outstanding 160 or so young men, women, boys and girls representing the Club and Town each week. I urge you not to lose sight of that aspect and continue to support it. Kel Noonan MFNC President 2012

TREASURES REPORT

The 2012 season was a disappointing overall for the Maryborough Football Netball Club, however there is light at the end of the tunnel.

As a positive he club had stability at the top with Kelvin Noonan continuing on as Club President, and Adam Lowery continuing to do a wonderful job as Secretary.

Secondly Senior Coach Matt Aston, continued his coaching role for a second season, and was joined by Joel Malone as his senior assistant.

On-field, the club unfortunately did not get the results that were sought after in all grades of Football and Netball, however the competitiveness and desire remained for all contributors.

Undoubtedly the future of the club is in the hands of the youth that will be future senior players at MFNC, and for the Under 18’s to have had another season of top level BFNL football, will only assist the players and the clubs’ development in 2013 and beyond.

Financially the clubs numbers were a little down compared to that of 2010-11, resulting in a net loss for the period beginning November 1, 2011 to October 31st 2012.

Total income from November 1st, 2011 to October 31st 2012 was $261,293.94, (compared to $250,034.42 for 2010-11), however total expenditure increased to $263,726.04 (up from $235,655.85) in 2010-11.

Thus leaving the MFNC with a net loss for 2011-12 of $1985.28, compared to the 2010-11 result of a $11,451.56 net profit.

As always the clubs’ major sources of income were Thursday night Bingo, ($39,249.40) sponsorship from the local community, ($36,250.96), match day canteen, ($23,314.26) and the various functions and events held across the season.

Other profitable interests included bar sales (including booth match day), gate takings, memberships, the coffee machine, and the canteen for energy breakthrough weekend.

Unfortunately the numbers for bingo (down 1.8%), canteen (down 13.7%) bar operations (down 9.1%) and gate takings (down 13.3%) were disappointing this year, however on the plus side, sponsorship (up 5.3%) increased, reflecting the hard work by all those involved in sourcing new sources of fundraising.

Disappointingly overall, there was a reduction in general fundraising profits in 2011-12.

Total fundraising income was $69,010.90, versus total expenditure of $55,139.06, (net profit of $13,962.84) compared to 2010-11, figures (income $49,801.15, expenses $27,510.80, net profit $22,290.35).

Therefore resulting in a major shortfall of $8327.51, (down 37.4%) compared to the previous season.

10

Football department spending was higher again this season, (up 14.9%) mainly as a result of player spending; however coaching payments were less than last year.

As always the excessive BFNL League fees, VCFL registration, coupled with general football supplies, monthly shire rental, and telephone/internet charges were unavoidable expenses, that the club in its current state struggles in paying.

The off-field fundraising, in terms of the major raffle (caravan), was a bit of a let down compared to the initial forecasts, and the culture of players leaving things to the last minute is not an ideal environment in order to raise much needed funds through raffles, registration payments and memberships.

The excellent returns from Bingo, and sponsorship, however provide a marvelous framework for the club to build on in 2012-13, and beyond.

As for the 2013 season, the Maryborough Football Netball Club needs to energize the local community, and the support of all the clubs helpers and volunteers is greatly acknowledged.

This can be done via offering incentives for supporters, members and sponsors to sign up initially, and then by attending match day events and functions.

The challenge of fundraising will not be an easy one, and the committee and volunteers, will have an enormous job on their hands.

The concern for MFNC is that success on- field next season is not guaranteed, and taking this into account, the club needs to be somehow seen as the as the number one sporting club in the district, and therefore attract the most talented people (i.e. players and coaches) in the area.

Finally, I would like to thank the Maryborough Football Netball Club for allowing me to serve as club treasurer, and a committee member for the last 2 and half years, it is a great place to be, and I wish everyone involved with the Maryborough Magpies at all levels, all the best of success in the future.

SENIOR FOOTBALL REPORT Firstly I would like to thank all those involved at committee level for their support whilst coaching the seniors for the last two years. Everyone at the club has been fantastic and made the job so much easier than it could have been. I have enjoyed it, although it was a challenge this year when things did not go the way we had expected.

Joel and I had a good relationship as joint coaches. As you could see from game days Joel led from the front and was respected by our entire playing group. I hope he continues to coach in some way at the club and hopefully is encouraged to do so. He would be a great aid to anyone that takes the job on next year and more than likely with his standing around the Bendigo footy league he would be asked to help in some way.

I owe a huge amount to Terry, Phil, Geoff, Osh and Trants for helping me out, basically for the last two years. There advise has been much appreciated and I would not have got through it without there help. The countless amounts of phone calls at all hours along with meetings, they gave up a lot of free time. Also my old mate Chaddy for doing the running for the second half of this season. The players seemed to respond to him when he delivered a message with a bit of authority. Thanks also to all the players. We have a great group of boys who can still find the success they won't, if they just work that little bit harder for it.

Big thanks to Mel and Jim for dedicating time to organise everything from the drinks to whistles and everything in between (and saving all the things that I would leave behind or misplace)

Adam Lowery needs a medal for the amount of work behind the scenes he does. The club would be lost with out him and I thank him for putting up with the late notice of players coming in and out of all sides and hanging around late Thursdays for the teams.

In regards to the senior team, I feel we recruited some good players back to the club and from the out set of 2012 we had set our sights on finals footy. As it turned out we were a fair way off the mark with some pretty lean patches during the year. On our day we could match it with most sides but were too inconsistent for the majority.

At the end of the season I spoke to a lot of the players and feel that they are looking towards a change at Maryborough. Hopefully the club can find the right person to fill the role, someone who can devote more time to the job (than I could).

In my opinion we have a great list of 15 odd senior players. A lack of depth in our seconds causes us problems. When we have a few out injured, the back end of the list really struggles to play good footy at senior level.

The club needs to hang on to as many of these players as possible and obviously recruit to top up the amount of players that can be competitive at senior level. I don't think we need big signings, just 4 -5 good quality players that can do jobs and play well under pressure. Something that an out of town coach / playing coach might be able to provide.

Areas we struggled in on the field was, with our skills (again) and leg speed. Our core midfield group of J Malone, M Johnston, and E Hurse are good quality and having a couple of speedsters to go with them would be ideal.

Cole Roscholler was sorely missed and with him returning, it will go some of the way to filling the small forward role which we didn't have this year. His toughness and goal kicking ability as well as being able to play in the mid field will be a bonus. Maryborough need to make sure, to get onto him early so we don't lose him.

Another area we can pick up on is our players that are going to uni in Ballarat. Micca and Dillon Murray have both said that they have mates that would be interested in coming over (probably for the two’s?) The club needs to explore these ideas even if it has to cover travel costs to get a car load over each week. It would make the two's more competitive week in week out which in turn puts pressure on the seniors.

The young blokes from the under 18's showed some promise. Josh Roberts was great and will play a lot more senior footy next year. Liam Cunningham has huge potential and Zac Egan, Liam Tranter, Joel Radlof, Ty Stewart and Callum Rowe also should push for seniors next year.

Ultimately the footy department needs a head coach that can give more time to the role. I feel that while I had a good relationship with the players, at times it led to some hard decisions not being made early enough.

RESERVE FOOTBALL REPORT I will start by stating what a privilege it has been to be a part of such a hardworking and determined football club, and I sincerely thank the football committee for giving me the opportunity to coach and contribute where I could throughout 2012. There are some magnificent people around this club and I really hope we see some success again soon. I have no doubt that with the continued dedication around the place that it is just around the corner.

2012 season started quite positively with some new recruits, especially in the Reserves, and I had the goal set of sneaking in to the finals, providing we had a bit of luck. Unfortunately, luck escaped us with some senior players injured, and players choosing to leave the club for various reasons. Even with these obstacles, the fact that we managed only 2 wins and had the worst percentage of all teams in the three football grades says a fair bit about the backward steps we have taken over the last 12 months. As the coach, I take full responsibility for our results, and this is largely the basis for why I have made the decision not to lead to the side in 2013. Despite our largely disappointing season, we finished the season well, being far more competitive in our final two games, which highlights that we were only ever 3-4 players away from being a very competitive team.

There are also positives to be taken out of the season. The emergence of players like Dylan Murray and Anders Malone was very encouraging to watch, and their performances in the seniors in the last few games of the season lead me to believe that our depth is not as shallow as some perceive it to be. Given the right direction and encouragement, both of these players will develop into senior footballers. We also managed to develop some of the younger reserves players. Ryan O’Shea held down CHB for a large portion of the year, Dylan McLean improves every time he walks out onto the field and Sam Johnston showed class that we really lacked. Another positive was the Under 18 boys. We have to move heaven and earth to make sure that these boys turn into Maryborough players and Maryborough people. They all gave a great account of themselves and will be excellent overage players.

I would also like to sincerely thank the ‘more seasoned’ players for their efforts and continued support over a tough year, especially Adam Lowery and Geoff MacIlwain, I have great respect for the effort they put in. Also the experience that Kayne Pascoe and Peter Egan gave us was first class in a developing team.

Looking forward, I would like to include some observations I have made and can hopefully leave a positive impression on the club.

I felt as an ‘outsider’ coach, I lacked the local knowledge and respect to recruit players from outside of the club. I think an accomplished local player might be better suited to this role while our numbers are low.

I know I am not telling anyone anything new here, but we need more input from our footballers off the field and on the training track. The footballers drive the culture of the club. To attend a premiership reunion and have 6-7 current footballers is unacceptable. By far the low point of the season and more embarrassing than any 30 goal loss.

As a club, we have to make sure our Reserves, Under 18 players and all netball teams are all looked after for their contribution to the MFNC. I have always felt the mark of a strong club is not how it treats the best players, but how it looks after the rest.

I sincerely hope I am not out of place with any of these observations as I have the best interests of this football club at heart. Finally, I would like to thank the committee. This is a wonderful place to be around and I certainly appreciate the hard work being put in to make this club great on-field again. Felice Cua Reserve Coach 2012

UNDER 18 FOOTBALL REPORT Recruiting This time last year I indicated a list of 40 to select a squad from. As is always the case, a difficult year resulted. We had some 26 regular players to select our side, however 2 were cleared mid-season, many players had work commitments, some never showed up for games, 3 had long term injuries and never played and the selection of players for Seniors. We did recruit some players throughout and under 16 filled in from time to time. Training Training this age group can be difficult. Do you train as a group when during the week pressures such as work, School, and family can interfere with the plans. Do we integrate players into senior training and prepare them for their future. This was the way we went and a regular 8-10 players attended throughout the season. Highlights The 6 players who played seniors was certainly a highlight, and a couple more were on the verge. Winning the first game against Castlemaine with only 15 players, and winning against Sth Bendigo were exciting games which eventually ended up 1.11% below us on the ladder thus retaining the wooden spoon in Bendigo. The last game against Golden Square was a true reflection of our ability hitting the front in the second quarter. The involvement of myself and our players (name them) in interleague this year with the South V North concept was exciting and challenging. It was a great opportunity and great to see Josh awarded a medal for his performance on the day. Moments to forget Playing with less than 18 players is always a moment to forget, the game that we forfeited to Golden square but generally the year was successful in many aspects of player development. Thank you Thank you to my wife Nancye for putting up with “footy stuff”, Thank you to Adam Lowery for being a competent secretary. Thanks to Kelvin as president, my fellow trainers and team managers, the committee and the hard working people behind the scenes. Thank you to Eathen Jennings who filled the role perfectly as runner when Trent left. Thanks to the parents of the players and indeed the players themselves for being as committed as possible – I enjoyed each and every person’s company. Terry Hillier U18 Coach 2012

NETBALL COMMITTEE REPORT The 2012 season was an interesting one for the netball club. The season had many challenges that brought a different focus for the club. The season had to begin early for the netballers as the League made a decision to include a 5th grade into the competition. They called it B Reserve and it was played at the time slot after 17 & under. It was a”big ask” for our club to secure enough players for this many teams and coaches as well. Luckily for us Sue Wagstaff agreed to coach the B Reserve team. We searched for new coaches for the season early on but were unable to find anyone willing to take on the senior job. Jordan Macilwain and Olivia O’ Shea continued with the 17 & under team and Bec Lovett started with the B Grade team. Alicia Cassidy stood up and took the reins again for the A Grade and Laura Clarkson the A Reserve. Unfortunately Bec could not complete the season due to work commitments and so Kate McLoughlin took over the B Grade team. We are very lucky to have such dedicated people in our club and we commend them for their commitment and efforts throughout the season. We had a hard working committee who made the season run smoothly. We had a number of people who performed jobs each week. However there were times when more assistance was needed. Allocation of jobs at the start of the season was an advantage. We applied for a uniform grant from the State government and were lucky enough to secure funds to assist in the payment of new uniforms for the B Reserve team. Fundraising continued as it has in the past with chocolate drive, raffles and social event. The Central Goldfields Shire allocated funds in its budget to improving the area around the netball court. The improvements included:- resurfacing of the court, improved runoff area around court { to meet Netball Victoria Standards.}, seating on both sides of court and retaining wall and viewing area on football ground side. Although the start of the season saw good numbers of players trying out and displaying an intention to play we were unable to retain them all. As the season progressed and the number of injuries to players rose we found a shortage of players in the lower grades especially. We thank all the players who played two games on one day to help us out. The BFNL has as a netball executive that runs the competition. This year there were a few occasions when our club felt disadvantaged by this. There was only one club delegates meeting for the season and we believe that this is not enough. As we are a country club and quite distanced from the Bendigo clubs we felt that we were not consulted on important matters that affect our club. The club did not have a successful year in terms of netball achievements. The B Reserve, B, and A Reserve team did not win many games for the season .We are sure that they all learnt a great deal from playing netball at this challenging level. It is a credit to the players that they always retained a positive outlook and attitude throughout the season. The Netball Club looks forwards to continuing success in the 2013 season. A GRADE NETBALL REPORT The 2012 season got off to a different start with a group of 10-12 girls travelling to White Hills, Bendigo, to play in a Twilight Competition. We competed against some of the top Bendigo teams: Eaglehawk, Sandhurst, Strath, Kyneton and surrounding towns White Hills, Heathcote, Leitchville Gunbower and Newbridge. This provided the girls with some early pre-match fitness and to see how we were going to shape up against some of the Bendigo teams. The girls did well to achieve third overall.

We took a little while to hit our straps in the first half of the season while trying to find the right mix on the court. It was good to give some A Reserve players an opportunity to try out in various positions in A Grade. We played some terrific games against the top teams but always seemed to fall just short due to only playing 3 good quarters out of the required four. We still managed to win most of the other games to ensure, as a team, we improved from seventh position to the sixth for 2012.

I have enjoyed the last two seasons as playing coach of the A Grade team. The girls, Jordan Macilwain, Olivia O’Shea, Laura Clarkson, Kristy Bond, Alisha Chadwick and Kahlia Dix are terrific bunch of girls and have been a pleasure to coach and play with. It is with great delight that I am happy to hand the reins over to Tracey Dix to coach the girls in 2013. She will add a harder approach, great knowledge base on the game and enthusiasm to hopefully steer the girls to a top five finish.

I would like to personally thank a few people over the last two years coaching. Sue Macilwain my manager: getting everything ready before the game, organizing wet weather venues, alternative trainers. Laura Clarkson: helping out with training, bouncing ideas off, just being Laura! Melissa Adams and Rachael Palmer: all their hard work behind the scenes to even get us on the court. Tracey Dix: all her statistics and advice on game days, her passion for the game. Renae Kurkze: helping me out in the first half of the season and lastly to my family for giving me the opportunity to coach and play. Thanks Alicia Cassidy A Grade Netball Coach

A RESERVE NETBALL REPORT This season had a promising start with a large bunch of girls vying for a position in the A and A Reserve teams. It was pleasing to see that over the first few weeks of the season, many girls had an opportunity to prove themselves stepping up into the A Grade team for the odd game and others getting an opportunity to sit on the A Grade bench after their A Reserve game.

There were several new additions to the A Res team from the previous year; Youngsters Chelsie Robinson and Chloe Egan moved up from the underage competition, Bec Lovett came to the club from Newstead, Amelia Batson returned to the club after several years with Dunolly, Katherine Clegg also returned to the club, Brylie Earl a past A Grade player and Meika Lehmann from Mildura.

In the initial weeks, it was hard to find a set combination with so much versatility and many options to choose from. It was also made hard by the fact that I was absent for the initial five weeks of the season. Thank you to Rachael Palmer, Melissa Adams, Alicia Cassidy and Sally Wren for stepping in and coaching/training the girls in my absence, you did a wonderful job and your help was much appreciated.

As the season progressed, our numbers began to dwindle, with injuries, work/uni commitments, family matters, departures from the club-they all took their toll on the A Res team and soon we were left with the bare 7. This gave other younger players within the club, the opportunity to sit on our bench and play several games, getting valuable experience against some older and stronger opponents. Thank you to all the 17 & U, B Grade and B Reserve girls who were able to fill in for us when needed. During the season, the girls came up against some very tough and tall opposition. Many of the teams were much fitter and faster than us and simple beat us with their leg speed. Our girls improved as the season went on and in the second round of playing each other, put in much better performance than the first half of the season. We were unlucky not to get a win for the season, with many games being very close up until three quarter time. On several occasion, we went down by less than 5 goals. Next season it will be really important to ensure that we are able to run out the four quarters and maintain the type of intensity and consistency needed to win games.

Although we didn’t have a great deal of success on the count, the individual improvements and improvement shown as a team was evident. The girls appeared to always enjoy playing the game and being part of the team. There were many laughs had by all and the camaraderie and friendship shown amongst the team, was lovely to be a part of.

Thank you to all the girls for making me feel at ease amongst you. I have enjoyed coaching this team over the past 2 years and I hope that all the girls will enjoy working with Tracie next year as she has a wealth of netball experience and a wonderful netball brain. Thanks to the ladies that helped me on game day, Alicia for running training sessions and last but not least, thank you to out hard working committee-you know who you are!

B GRADE NETBALL REPORT The 2012 netball season was a tough one for the B grade team. They had a number of different coaches throughout the year. When I took over in the second half of the year most of the players were either not wanting to play/train or feeling very dejected. It was hard to fill a team some weeks and we relied heavily on the juniors to step up and play a second game. Towards the end of the year the player’s moral seemed to lift and the team put in some much better performances. The B Grade team didn’t win a game in the 2012 season however there are still positives to be taken out of the season. We welcomed some new players/families to the club and we will hope to keep them at the club next year. The girls in B Grade seemed to have a fun end to the season and played a couple of really good close games. If they stick together next year it should see them come out with at least one win for the season. Kate McLoughlin B Grade Coach 2012

B RESERVE NETBALL REPORT This year saw the introduction of the new B Reserve grade and our team was the only team in the competition that was made up entirely of U/17 players. We worked hard each week on the court and the girl’s mental and physical toughness developed considerably as the season progressed. The girls worked hard in pre-season, participating in a variety of fitness sessions, playing in the netball competition at TLC on a Monday night and selling chocolates to raise money for more uniforms. They were all extremely eager to earn a game in the U/17s and show Jordi and Olivia just how well they could play. Throughout the season the girls played very competitive netball despite running second every week. We had some very close games against opponents that were more than twice the girl’s age. A number of the girls filled in for the other grades and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Thank you to all the girls who filled in for us throughout the season. We really appreciate the support you gave us when we were short of players due to illness, injury or school and work commitments. Finally I would like say a huge thank you to Narelle Egan for being our team manager throughout the season and continually offering encouragement to the girls each week. I hope all the B Reserve girls gained something from their experiences this season and will continue to develop their netball skills further in the future. Sue Wagstaff B Reserve Coach2012

17 & UNDER NETBALL REPORT The girls started off the season getting familiar with each other, recognizing how they all played and what different skills they all had. Getting a few wins on the board raised their confidence and as a team they began to grow. Forming new relationships and becoming like a family we all gelled as us coaches, myself and Jordan could relate to the kids and give them the advice and guidance they needed. As the year went on we started to get fitter as Jordan and myself pushed the girls to do fitness on their own and did two nights a week of training with one night just plain fitness doing core and upper body strength and then the other night ball work, working on skills and having set plays to work with on Saturdays. We had a fairly young team but that didn’t stop the girls fight and determination to get through the game and face the other girls. The girls always gave up a good fight and never gave up. We had a rising star finalist Ingrid Dellavedova, captain and joint best and fairest with Abbey Parker who had a fantastic year who was very versatile in defense and goals. Jordan and myself really enjoyed coaching the girls and as a whole the team did well being such a young team, everyone enjoyed the year and was pleased to end on a good note. Next year some girls will go up to improve even more as netball players and the younger ones can keep the team moving forward and hopefully bring a premiership to the cards.
