Present

From Gerry Yager: After seven years as the Maryland District Couple of the Year Coordinator I have stepped down from this position. Laura and Dan Watts will be taking over in 2015. They are very interested and excited about taking on this role and already have several ideas on how to bring more enthusiasm to the Maryland Couple of the Year program. They also have several great mentors such as Mary & Dan Costello (Region B Couple of the Year Coordinators) and Bob & Julie A'Hearn (Region B Couple of the Year for 2013-2014). This year I hope all Chapter Couples will think positively about participating in the 2016 selection. Be proud all you Chapter Couples – remember, you were chosen to represent your GWRRA chapter. In November I announced that Dan and Laura Watts would remain as the Maryland District Couple in 2015 since we have no participants for the selection this year. I learned however that they cannot fill the position of District Couple for more than one year at a time. This unfortunately means that Maryland will not have a District Couple for 2015. At WinterThing there will be a reception at 9:00 am Friday for all COYs past and present. There is also a Round Table to discuss the COY program in Maryland at 10:00 am for anyone who is interested in attending. Wishing you all a safe and Happy New Year!

Rider Education

MD District Educators

Jackie and I hope everyone had a great holiday season. It’s great to share time with our families and friends.

Well it’s hard to believe, 2014 is history already and time to look ahead to 2015. What adventures do you plan on embarking on this year? Rider education is here to help your adventures be safe one’s. We want our members to be educated, skilled and prepared. As you look forward to 2015 please take advantage of our great Seminars, PLP’s and Rider courses. Just like last year we are going to make an effort to provide our members an opportunity to learn, practice and sharpen your riding skills. Keep in mind that these activities are not just limited to riders; but co-riders are also encourage to participate. Remember, riding 2-up is a team effort. Co-riders bring a second pair of eyes, help with navigation and the companionship that comes with sharing the adventure. So co-riders, come to learn, practice and sharpen your skills. Get a better understanding of what the rider experiences out there on the road. Learn how to share the adventure as a team.

This year the MD district with the aid of our chapter educators are planning some great rider courses. In April, look for the chapters offering a Parking Lot Practice (PLP). This is a great way to dust the cobwebs off your riding skills and get ready for the new riding season. In the spring and fall plans are underway to again offer an Advance riding course and a Trike course. Winterthing will give you a chance to attend some of the many seminar courses offered by GWRRA.

There are great adventures waiting to be taken in 2015. Just as it takes planning to choose the best routes, accommodations, and locations, it takes planning to keep yourself and your partner safe and trouble free.

Wishing everyone a great 2015 riding season, and see you at Winterthing!

Al & Jackie

Welcome to January, and the start of 2015.

The plans for “Winter Thing” are completed. Join us in Ocean City, January 8th to the 10th, for the

Silver Anniversary celebration at the “Clarion Resort Fontainebleau Hotel”. The theme for this year is the Silver Screen and the costume contest is Friday evening, so come dressed in your swankiest Silver Screen attire.

The “Winter Thing” University Training schedule includes a variety of Rider Education (including Motorist Awareness), Leadership Training, and Membership Enhancement seminars. The CPR / MFA recertification, presented by Tim Grimes & Julie A’Hearn, will be offered Saturday morning from 8 AM to Noon.

See the attached Winter Thing schedule for more information and make your plans for which seminars to attend and other FUN events during the weekend.

Speaking of seminars, we have a large number of University Trainers (UTs) in our District, which is a good situation to be in. The two issues we face are the UT’s are under utilized by the Chapters in the District, and most of them are from one Chapter.

It would be great to see chapters calling us to schedule LTP, MEP, or REP seminars during the year. Also, if we get enough interest, we could hold another UTDP course to certify folks in other Chapters. This way, each chapter could become more competitive in the Chapter of the Year Program. Call us for more information.

The Officer Certification Program (OCP) course is scheduled for Saturday February 7th in

Hagerstown. This is great opportunity for those folks stepping up to assume “Core” positions in the Maryland or Delaware Chapters.

The class will be held at the home of Scott & Melanie Port, Chapter Directors for MD-F. The address is; 10 Brightwood Circle, Hagerstown MD 21740. Seating is limited so reserve your seat now. We already have seven folks signed up!! See the flyer in this newsletter for more details & how to RSVP.

See you at Winter Thing!
