Third Sunday in Ordinary Time January 22, 2017

This Weekend we celebrate the Feast Day of our Parish Patron, St. Vincent of Saragossa.

Vincent spent most of his life in the city of Saragossa, where he was educated and ordained to the diaconate by Bishop Valeriua, who commissioned him to preach throughout the diocese. Because Valerius suffered from a speech impediment, Vincent acted as his spokesman

When the Roman Emperor Diocletian began persecuting Christians in Spain, both were brought before the Roman governor, Dacian in Valencia. Vincent and his bishop Valerius were confined to the prison of Valencia. Though he was finally offered release if he would consign Scripture to the fire, Vincent refused. Speaking on behalf of his bishop, he informed the judge that they were ready to suffer everything for their faith, and that they could pay no heed either to threats or promises.

His outspoken manner so angered the governor that Vincent was inflicted every sort of torture on him. Finally he was cast into prison and laid on a floor scattered with broken pottery, where he died. During his martyrdom he preserved such peace and tranquility that it astonished his jailer, who repented from his sins and was converted. Vincent declared that God sent the angels of heaven to comfort him. His cell, he said, was illuminated with a heavenly light, and might have been filled with roses, so sweet was its fragrance. Vincent's dead body was thrown into the sea in a sack, but was later recovered by the Christians and his veneration immediately spread throughout the Church.

He is honored as the patron in Valencia, Saragossa, Portugal and is the patron of bakers, roof-makers, vinedressers, vintners, and roofers. His feast day is January 22.

Stewardship Corner

My husband and I joined SVM Parish in early 2007.

Our oldest daughter was just a few months old and we were looking for the right parish to join. It took just a single Sunday service to feel

this was the right parish for us. Since them we have enjoyed countless gifts and blessings that our parish has to offer. It was not until about a year ago, that I felt a tremendous sense of gratitude to be a part of the SVM community for almost 10 years. I also felt a deep sense of responsibility to "pay forward". I then looked for opportunities to get involved and joined the Stewardship Initiative. I have met amazing fellow parishioners and I have grown spiritually like never before. I am Grateful, Gifted, and ready to Give. I encourage each one of you to look deep into your hearts to discover the same.

“Hermanos, en el nombre de

nuestro Señor Jesucristo, yo

los exhorto a que se pongan de

acuerdo: que no haya

divisiones entre ustedes y

vivan en perfecta armonía,

teniendo la misma manera de

pensar y de sentir… Porque

Cristo no me envió a bautizar,

sino a anunciar la Buena

Noticia, y esto sin recurrir a la

elocuencia humana, para que la

cruz de Cristo no pierda su

eficacia.”

Desde los primeros días de la

iglesia, habían dudas y conflictos

mientras las comunidades se

formaban y crecían. Dos mil

años después, la gente continúa

formando bandos o siendo

etiquetada. Las palabras de San

Pablo deberían detenernos y

hacernos pensar.

Escucho muchos sermones, leo

muchos panfletos, veo una

variedad de programas religiosos.

Todos parecen tener diferentes

perspectivas. Si son creíbles,

deberían llevarnos a la cruz de

Jesucristo. Si no logran hacerlo,

son de poco valor.

¿No hemos escuchado las

palabras de las escrituras: ‘Hay

que necesita escuchar.
