El lunes 12 de febrero, 2007, el Alcalde de laCiudad de Lawrence, Michael J. Sullivan, llevó acabo una conferencia de prensa para anunciar laimplementación de un Estudio de Satisfacción delResidente. El anuncio se llevó a cabo en el SalónRobert Frost de la Biblioteca Pública de Lawrence.La encuesta, obra de Lawrence CommunityWorksfue aprobada por el Alcalde Sullivan, y 30,000 copiasserán enviadas a las casas de los residentes. Deacuerdo con el Alcalde, esta encuesta crearáoportunidades de participación de la comunidad enel proceso de preparación del presupuesto de laciudad.
Las cinco páginas a dos caras de la encuestaincluyen secciones para que los residentes evalúenla calidad de los servicios y la calidad de vida enLawrence y para describir la frecuencia con la cualellos usan esos servicios, y establecer su prioridaden las decisiones de gastos futuros de la ciudad.
La comunidad tendrá hasta el viernes 9 demarzo, 2007, para devolver las copias de la encuestadebidamente llenadas. Los resultados seránanalizados por un equipo de investigación de UMassLowell, dirigida por Phil Moss, Jefe delDepartamento de Desarrollo Económico Regional.
El equipo presentará un reporte con losresultados finales del análisis al Alcalde Sullivan, alos Jefes de Departamentos y a los Concejales. El
reporte también será hecho público y será discutidoen abril, en una serie de reuniones comunitarias.Los Jefes de Departamento tendrán la oportunidadde usar los datos de la encuesta para informar sobresus decisiones de cómo gastar el presupuesto delaño fiscal 2007-2008.

Las Escuelas Públicas de Lawrence han estado enproblemas desde hace mucho tiempo. Además de la situacióncon el exceso de capacidad en Lawrence High School, el sistemaescolar completo está manchado por los problemas de disciplina,violencia y bajos resultados en los MCAS.
Nosotros siempre hemos dicho que culpar a los maestrosera una injusticia. Sabemos de muchos maestros que hanabandonado su profesión por la frustración con la política y elsistema que tienen que satisfacer o con el que tienen quebatallar.
Lo que en realidad está aguantando a nuestros niños es elsilencio que todo el mundo se ha impuesto. Los padres no sequejan por muchas diferentes razones pero los maestros hanestado actuando con miedo por demasiado tiempo. Escuchamosque algunos de los que asistieron a la reunión de la Unión el 7de febrero lo hicieron porque ya se cansaron de aguantar elambiente de trabajo, pero no habían asistido a una asambleaen varios años. Pudiéramos decir que su silencio permitió quelas condiciones llegaran a este punto.
Ustedes tienen una Unión que está tratando derepresentarlos pero necesita de su apoyo. Su Unión es su voz.

Lawrence Public Schools have been in trouble for a longtime. Besides the overcrowding problems at Lawrence HighSchool, the entire school system is marred by disciplineproblems, violence and low MCAS scores.
We always said that blaming the teachers was a cheapshot. We know of many teachers who abandoned theirprofession out of frustration with politics and the system theyhad to either please or battle against.
What is really holding Lawrence children back is the silenceimposed by everyone. Parents don’t complain for manydifferent reasons but teachers have been acting out of fear fortoo long. We heard from some of them that they attended theFebruary 7th union meeting because they have had enoughputting up with the work conditions, but they had not been toone in years. We could say that their silence allowed theconditions to get to this stage.
You have a Union that is trying to represent you but itneeds your support. Your Union is your voice.

The Merrimack Valley Chamber ofCommerce held its annual “Special Reportfrom Washington” with a breakfast atWyndham Hotel in Andover, on Monday,February 12, 2007, with special guestspeakers U.S. Congressmen MartyMeehan and John F. Tierney.
The event’s theme was thechallenges facing the United States in2007 and how your business is impacted.The theme attracted not only localbusinessmen/women but also many stateelected officials and a large group ofMerrimack College students.
Congressman Tierney was first onthe mic to speak about the challenges for2007, among them, Iraq, and limited hisspeech to that subject. Tierney told theaudience that “this week, the House isgoing to pass a resolution, something theSenate couldn’t do last week” about thespending in the war. “On one hand, wereiterate our support for the women andmen in uniform,” said Tierney and added,“but on the other hand, we are going tosay clearly our opposition for theescalation in Iraq’s war.”
Marty Meehan, Chairman of theArmed Services Subcommittee, (who, bythe time this edition is circulating will bespending five days in Iraq), congratulatedBevilacqua for his award winning ‘MVCCmean business’ interactive web page, andread a proclamation from the U.S.Congress praising the chamber for itseffort.
Meehan touched the RenewalCommunity issue and how, by workingwith Housing and Urban DevelopmentSecretary, Mel Martinez, Lawrence wasable to expand its tax incentive area, to 5new businesses, including Sal Lupoli’sRiverwalk and Bob Ansin’s Wood Mill.
“From 38 businesses with 700employees, he brought 150 companieswith more than 1,700 employees,” Meehanpraised Lupoli, and added that soon, theMerrimack Valley Federal Credit UnionHeadquarters will be part of this complex.“I can’t take a better EconomicDevelopment Project than Sal’s project,”said Meehan.

El tema del evento era los retos a quese enfrentan los Estados Unidos en el 2007,y de cómo sus negocios serán afectados.El tema no solo atrajo un gran número dehombres y mujeres de negocio perotambién muchos oficiales electos y ungrupo de estudiantes de MerrimackCollege.
El primero en tomar el micrófono yhablar de los retos del 2007 fue elCongresista Tierney, limitando su discursoal tema de Irak. Tierney le dijo a la audienciaque “esta semana, la Casa deRepresentantes pasará una resolución,cosa que no pudo hacer el Senado lasemana pasada”, acerca de los gastos dela guerra. “Por un lado, reiteraremos nuestroapoyo por las mujeres y los hombres deuniforme”, dijo Tierney y añadió “pero porotro lado vamos a expresar claramentenuestra oposición por el escalonamientode la guerra en Irak”.

El incremento de la violencia entre losjóvenes es un tópico que está despertandomás que una simple preocupación en losresidentes de esta ciudad, sino que vienegenerando una serie de interrogantes entorno al mismo, que va desde las causas deeste flagelo hasta como prevenir la misma.
Son innumerables los sectores que hanmanifestado su preocupación ante laocurrencia de actos violencia, entre ellos laiglesia, como es el caso del padre JoelAlmonó de la Iglesia Episcopal de Gracia.Este es un tema que merece toda la atenciónposible y es una problemática que noscompite a todos como parte de lacomunidad y para poder solucionarlo senecesita del apoyo de los padres, lasautoridades y de organizaciones deservicios sociales.
Como un primer paso para llevar elmensaje sobre la importancia de prevenir laviolencia entre los jóvenes, el domingo 25,a partir de la una de la tarde, en el salón deactos de la Iglesia Episcopal de Gracia,ubicada en el número 35 de la calle Jackson,se va a realizar un encuentro para quepadres e hijos dejen escuchar su voz sobreeste particular.

nuestros hijos” sin dudas puede ser elinicio de un trabajo mancomunado para quejuntos se pueda trillar el camino hacia laprevención de la violencia entre los jóvenesy adolescentes.
“Pretendemos que los padresentiendan que la violencia que nos afectapuede llegar hasta sus hijos y que se dencuentan si realmente conocen a sus hijostanto como creen” , dijo Almonó.
Asimismo, Almonó destacó que estainiciativa no tiene relación con ningunacreencia religiosa y que la intención de lamisma es hacer un llamado claro sobre laincidencia de la violencia entre los jóvenes,“no queremos que se piense que estamoshaciendo esto con el fin de que la gentevenga a nuestra iglesia. Esto es un problemaque nos atañe a todos”.
La idea de este encuentro tiene susbases en una actividad realizada en el mesde septiembre del pasado año en el parqueCampagnone. Bajo el título ¿Deseas Serescuchado? Exprésate donde participaronvarios jóvenes y dejaron escuchar susposturas frente al crecimiento de la violenciay cuáles son sus mayores preocupaciones.“En esta ocasión surgieron cosas muyinteresantes en cuanto a las razones
principales que los jóvenes y las jóvenesparticipantes entendían motivan el auge dela violencia, ahora queremos oír a lospadres”, aseguró el religioso.
El diálogo con los padres se iniciarácon la intervención del profesor Pedro
Payano, quien hablará sobre el incrementode la violencia entre los jóvenes de estaciudad.
Acto seguido se realizará un debatesobre este tema, en base a preguntasrelacionadas con el mismo, las que estarándirigidas a los padres presentes en esteencuentro.
En el evento de septiembre que fuecoordinado y planificado por Almonóparticiparon el padre Jorge Reyes de laiglesia Saint Mary, el pastor Rafael Blanco,el ex presidente de Semana Hispana BrianDe Peña y Rick Rivera.

Este es el mes del Carnaval en laRepública Dominicana ciudades, pueblos ybarrios están disfrutando a plenitud de estatradición que se caracteriza por un derrochede colorido, vistosos disfraces y llamativasmáscaras.
En esta Ciudad de Lawrence losdominicanos y dominicanas tendrán laoportunidad de vivir una tarde de carnaval,donde serán palpables los disfraces, lasvejigas, la brillantez de las caretas, graciasal esfuerzo que por segunda ocasión realizala Asociación Carnavalesca deMassachusetts.
Este derroche del carnaval dominicanoestará presente este domingo, 18 de febreroa partir de las tres de la tarde en el Auditoriode la Escuela Santa María.
De acuerdo a Stelvyn Mirabal directorde la Comparsa de la Familia Mirabal esteaño al igual que en el 2006, el objetivofundamental es dar a conocer la riqueza delcarnaval dominicano y que las nuevasgeneraciones puedan disfrutar de unatradición que es parte de la esencia y laidiosincrasia del pueblo dominicano.
Este año se espera la participación deuna representación de las comparsas de losVejigantes, Los Duros de la Capital, unacaracterización de Roba la Gallina de laciudad de Providence, entre otros.
Eva Rojas, mejor conocida como “EvaSazón” ha sido escogida como madrina dela Segunda Fiesta de Disfraces.
Rojas es oriunda de la ciudad de LaVega situada en la región del Cibao en laRepública Dominicana, considerado comouno de los lugares donde mejor se vive elcarnaval, lo que le ha situado como una delas ciudades con mejor perspectiva y visiónde un colorido y divertido carnaval.

Losciudadanos del estado han recibidollamadas de personas que reclaman serfuncionarios del tribunal que persiguen apersonas que no han cumplido con su deberde ser jurado. Cuándo la persona protestaque ellos no supieron nada del deber deservir en un jurado, la persona que llamademanda identificar información personal(tal como el número del Seguro Social y lafecha de nacimiento) para confirmar que elsujeto no está en peligro de multa ni dearresto.
“Esto es una estafa especialmenteingeniosa porque se aprovecha de lostemores de las personas y la indignación enser acusado falsamente de violar la ley,” dijoPamela J. Wood, Miembro de la Comisiónde Jurados para es estado. “El ladrón amenudo se presentará como un oficial oalguacil del tribunal y dirá que usted oalguien cerca a usted, tal como su hijo o sucónyuge, no se ha presentado para serviren el jurado y será multado o será detenidosi ellos no informan al tribunalinmediatamente. La llamada telefónica es una indicaciónclara que la llamada es falsa, según laComisionada Word. Ella informa que ni laOficina de la Comisión de Jurados ni lostribunales jamás llamarán a los miembros dejurados por teléfono con respecto a suservicio del jurado. El no comparecer a sudeber en el jurado hará que le envíen notasde recordatorio y prosecución eventual sino resuelto, pero todas las comunicacionesson mandadas por correo. Una persona queno haya asistido a su deber en un juradoserá instruida para llamar la Oficina de laComisión de Jurados, pero sólo después derecibir una nota escrita por correo con losdetalles acerca de la fecha y el lugar delservicio al que no asistió.
La Oficina de la Comisión de Jurados leofrece las pautas siguientes a cualquieraque obtiene una llamada acerca de no haberasistido a su deber de servir en un jurado:

A veces se oyen frases como: ‘quieroser yo mismo’, ‘busco mi propia realización’,‘quiero formar mi propia persona’. Estasaspiraciones son una de las notas incluidasen el concepto de persona, como es lasingularidad. Las otras notas son laautonomía y la apertura. La singularidadimplica una distinción cualitativa en virtudde la cual cada hombre es quien es, diferentede los demás. (Ver Educación personalizada,de Víctor García Hoz).
La realización personal se consigue enprimer lugar en el desarrollo intencional dela propia libertad, creciendo en libertadresponsable. Uno es más persona cuandoes más libre.
El hombre, como ser social, rompe suámbito individual y se abre a la relación conlos demás. Se hace persona especialmentemediante el trabajo y la convivencia.
“Aplicado a la persona, realizarsequiere decir cumplir el proyecto de suexistencia, que es lo que hace que la personaalcance su plenitud. Pero es afirmar, conotras palabras, que la persona se perfecciona- alcanza la plenitud o perfección - cuandoobtiene sus fines. La persona se realizacumpliendo los fines para los que ha sidocreada. Estos fines son el fin natural (conlos fines parciales que comprende el trabajoentre ellos) , o proyecto de existenciagrabado en la naturaleza humana, y el fin

Quizás sea en el trabajo donde seadvierte mejor el significado de la palabrarealizar: pasar del proyecto a la realidad.Pero no todo trabajo sirve para mirealización personal. Debe ser realizadoen unas condiciones específicas para quecumpla su finalidad de promover laeducación, tanto propia como ajena.
El trabajo tiene que ser humano, esdecir, hecho con libertad, con iniciativa yrealizado responsablemente con mayor omenor autonomía. El trabajo se debe hacercon afán de servir, no con afán dedominar.
Cada uno tiene un estilo personal detrabajar, que tiene que conocer y mejorar.De alguna forma el trabajador imprimecomo un sello representativo de supersonalidad en el trabajo.
Pero el trabajo no es el único ámbitode realización personal. Hay que cultivarotros aspectos de la vida humana comola familia, las relaciones de amistad, lasdiversiones y la vida religiosa, para abrirsea la relación con los demás y mejorar laconvivencia.

“¿No se ha cansado todavía?” Ese fueel grito que trajo a tantos miembros de laUnión de Maestros de Lawrence a sureunión del 7 de febrero. Algunos no habíanasistido a una asamblea en varios años peroesta vez dijeron sentirse motivados “por lapobre administración, la carencia demateriales, el caos y la violencia en LawrenceHigh School”, pero la queja principal quese escucha es “la falta de respeto hacia losmaestros.”
La violencia continúa siendo reportadade vez en cuando o no del todo.Recientemente, un estudiante discapacitadofue severamente golpeado en un baño y losculpables no fueron castigadosdebidamente porque nadie está siguiendoel código de disciplina como deben. Esasson algunas de las historias contadas porlos maestros de hoy pero lo que más losenfurece es que en lugar de aumentar laseguridad, el Superintendente Wilfredo T.Laboy redujo la fuerza removiendo unguardia de seguridad de Lawrence HighSchool.
“Al estudiante que asaltó al directorasistente en LHS el 7 de diciembre lepermitieron entrar a un juego de baloncestoel 12 de diciembre, aún cuando él fueexpulsado de la escuela no solo por haberatacado al director sino por tener un cuchillode 7” y una pequeña espada escondida ensu abrigo,” dijo un miembro de la facultadque no quiso ser identificado.
“Hace unas semanas atrás”, continuó,“casi hubo una revuelta en el gimnasio deLHS durante un juego de volleyball. Esedía que Lawrence y Lowell jugaron nocontrataron a ningún policía. La escuelahabía sido cerrada esa tarde y losestudiantes fueron registrados en busca dearmas por un rumor de que había armas enel plantel así como la amenaza de una gangaque venía a pelear desde Lowell. MichaelRivet, el Director Atlético tiene CEROexperiencia como tal. Los demás DirectoresAtléticos en la Merrimack Valley Conferencese ríen de él, pero él es último en reírseporque es el empleado con el salario másalto de todos los Directores Atléticos en elárea. Los maestros dicen que cuandohay una pelea o altercado, todos se paranen ellas para poder ver mejor y las rompen.Esas mesas de acero son muy caras y losempleados de mantenimiento tratan derepararlas pero están en muy malascondiciones.
También hay un problema con laspuertas en los pasillos. Estas se mantienenabiertas con imanes y se cierranautomáticamente si la alarma de incendiosuena. En caso de haber un fuego, estaspuertas se cierran para prevenir que el fuegoy el humo entre a otras partes del edificio.En la actualidad, hay muchas puertas queestán aguantadas por otros medios porquelos imanes no funcionan. Los maestrostemen que en caso de incendio las puertasno se cerrarán y el humo pasará librementepor todo el edificio.
Por casi dos meses, Rumbo ha estadotratando de conseguir información delDepartamento de Incendios con respectoal número excesivo de estudiantes en laescuela secundaria. El Departamento deInspecciones nos dijo que debíamos ir ahablar con el Jefe de Bomberos. Chief PeterTakvorian se lo refirió al Capitán Lannonquien nos envió un fax con copias del
manual estatal de regulaciones y estándarespara edificios.
Cuando llamamos a Chief Takvorian denuevo, nos mandó al Departamento deInspecciones y esta vez hablamos conMyles Burke. El Sr. Burke envió a Rumbocopias de un Certificado de Inspección confecha de setiembre 7, 2006 con una lista(cosas que necesitaban reparar en el períodode treinta días) y copcias de cartas delverano pasado, ninguna diciendo si lasreparaciones fueron completadas.
Los maestros se han quejado que desdesetiembre han tenido solamente un ensayoen caso incendios – un solo fire drill enuna escuela que todos han admitido quetiene un problema de capacidad. Si elDepartamento de Bomberos decide ir a haceruna prueba en Lawrence High School,encontrarán la falta de letreros señalandolas salidas.
El nivel de frustración ha llegado a sulímite y los miembros están considerandotomar un voto de “no tener confianza en elsuperintendente” en la próxima reunión dela Unión.

“Have you had enough yet?” That wasthe call that brought many members of theLawrence Teachers Union to their February7th assembly. Some had not attended ameeting in years but this time “felt motivatedby poor administration, scarcity of materials,chaos and violence surrounding LawrenceHigh School,” but the main complain heardwas the “lack of respect for teachers.”
Violence continues to go underreportedor not reported at all. Recently, ahandicapped student was badly beaten inthe bathroom and the perpetrators are notproperly punished because no one isfollowing the discipline code. Those aresome of the stories told by today’s teachersbut what infuriates them most is that insteadof increasing security, SuperintendentWilfredo T. Laboy reduced the force by oneremoving one guard from Lawrence HighSchool.
“The student who assaulted a LHS VicePrincipal on December 7 was allowed at aboys basketball game on December 12 eventhough he was excluded from school for notonly assaulting the principal but also havinga 7” cerated knife and a small swordconcealed in his jacket,” said a teacher whodid not want to be identified.

All the other Athletic Directors in theMerrimack Valley Conference are laughingat him, but he has the last laugh because heis the highest paid of all Athletic Directorsin the area. He is one of Laboy’s closestadvisors,” she concluded.
According to some of the teachers, “hetries to impress Laboy by saving money atthe expense of school safety. The only onewho can sneak into a LHS sporting event isLaboy and his immediatefamily. Rivet has packed the gym beyondthe fire and safety codes several times. Heseldom hires police. Money is his onlymotive. Then, Rivet was sent on allexpenses paid by the taxpayers junket toCalifornia immediately after these twoinstances.” The damages and loses are into thethousands of dollars and no one doesanything about it. A simple example of that
are the cafeteria tables. Teachers say thatwhenever there is a fight or altercation,everyone stands on them to have a betterlook and break them. The steel tables arevery expensive and the maintenancedepartment has tried putting them backtogether but they are in very poorconditions.
There is also a problem with the doorsin the hallways. They are held opened bymagnets that are released if a fire alarm issounded. In case of fire, these doors wouldclose and prevent the fire and smoke fromentering other parts of the building. Atpresent, there are many doors that are heldopen by wedges because those magnetsare no longer working. Teachers fear that incase of fire the doors will not close and thesmoke will travel freely throughout thebuilding.
For about two months, Rumbo hasbeen trying to get information from the FireDepartment regarding the overcrowdingsituation at the high school. InspectionalServices said we had to speak to the FireChief. Chief Peter Takvorian referred it toCaptain Lannon who faxed us photocopiesof the State Board of Building Regulationsand Standards.
When we contacted Chief Takvorianagain, he referred us to Inspectional Servicesand this time we spoke with Myles Burke.Mr. Burke gave Rumbo copies of theCertificate of Inspection dated September7, 2006 with a punch list (things needing tobe done on each floor within thirty days)

The City of Lawrence is charging for collection of certain bulky goods,televisions, and computers according to Ordinance 8.08.260. A yellow stickerthat costs $25 is needed for each appliance. A green sticker that costs $10 isneeded for each television or computer monitor. Two green stickers for a totalof $20 are needed for a computer mainframe and monitor comprising a system.Microwave ovens, audio equipment such as radios, and video equipment such asVCR’s do not require a sticker, as they can be put out curbside as trash.

Two Lawrence High Schoolphotography students have won awardsin this year’s prestigious Boston GLOBEScholastic Art Awards Competition. EloraAcosta, 17, who is a junior in the LHS forMath, Science and Technology, won goldand silver keys for her photographs, “TheWrinkles of a Lifetime” and “In the Armsof the Protector.” Henry Baez who is 17and a senior in the LHS for Health andHuman Services won two honorablementions for his photographs, “Burdenof a 1000 Souls” and “My Reflection.”They received the awards at the AnnualAwards Day Reception for MassachusettsSecondary Students on February 11th.

On Monday, February 12, 2007, City ofLawrence Mayor, Michael J. Sullivan, helda press conference to announce theimplementation of a Resident SatisfactionSurvey. The announcement was made in theRobert Frost Room at the Lawrence PublicLibrary.
The survey, a brainchild of LawrenceCommunityworks was approved by MayorSullivan and 30,000 of them will be mail tocitizen’s residences. According to theMayor, this survey will create opportunitiesfor community participation in the city’sbudget process.
The five double-pages survey includessections for residents to rate the quality ofcity services and the quality of life inLawrence, to describe the frequency withwhich they use services, and to prioritize
city services for future spending decisions.Community members will have until
Friday, March 9, 2007 to turn in their filledout copies of the survey. The results will beanalyzed by a research team at UMassLowell headed by Phil Moss, Chair of theDepartment of Regional Economic andSocial Development.
The team will submit a final analysisand report on the survey results to MayorSullivan, Department Heads and CityCouncilors. The report will also be madeavailable to the public and discussed at aseries of community meetings in April.Department Heads will then have theopportunity to use the survey data to informtheir spending decisions for the 2007-2008fiscal year.

Students from the Greater LawrenceVocational Technical School spent the dayon February 2nd at Home Health VNA’sLawrence office learning what exactly makesthe agency run on a day to day basis.
Eight students from the Allied Healthprogram at the school participated in theJob Shadow Day. Elaine Miller, VolunteerCoordinator for the agency’s Home HealthPartners Volunteer Program, worked withValley Works to serve as a host for JobShadow Day.
“This is a great opportunity forstudents to get a closer look at how ouragency functions on a day to day basis,”said Miller. “They had an opportunity tohear from direct staff as well as those whowork in our main offices. Students learnedmore about what makes home care differentthan other traditional types of health care.”
The students who visited Home HealthVNA were part of a group of more than 150that visited companies throughout the JobShadow Day. The group visiting HomeHealth VNA had direct contact with stafffrom the Human Resources Department, theVice President of HomeCare, Inc., and a HomeHealth Aide Manager. They also had anopportunity to hear from visiting nurses and

therapists who worked out in the field.“Home care is different than some of

“I didn’t realize there were so manychoices in home care,” said Carla Tavarezfrom Lawrence. “There are a lot of peoplewho go into the home, not just nurses.There’s a lot of responsibility being in apatient’s home and not in a nursing homewhere other people are around.”

Greater Lawrence Technical School,Andover, has announced its Students ofthe Month for December, recently honoredat a luncheon in the school’s restaurant,the Edward V. Coakley Four Winds. Theyare Yinnette Espina and Walter Maldonadoof Lawrence, both members of the Class of2009
Yinnette majors in Marketing at GreaterLawrence Tech, choosing this career areabecause of a long-term goal to own her ownbusiness. “I want to be the boss,” she saysof her intent to operate either a barbershopor a spa that offers massage. She hones herskills for her future career by working in theschool store, where she especially enjoysinteracting with customers.
She is a member of the school’s chapterof DECA, and competed in the districtcontest on January 31. Outside school sheworks part-time in a barbershop, braidinghair. From Monday through Thursday everyweek, she heads to Haverhill to practice herfavorite sport – boxing.

to attend a four-year college to major ineither accounting or business.

Yinnette. Marketing teacher Elizabeth Sheacited her “exemplary effort,” and biologyteacher Jennifer Dube and social studiesteacher Joan Sweeney who both also notedYinnette’s great effort in class. “She is abright spot on the day,” Ms. Sweeney said.
Walter Maldonado specializes inInformation Support Services, an area hechose because of his love for computers.Although many of the career areas atGreater Lawrence Technical School includecomputers in the curriculum, Walter says,
“When I explored ISS, I knew I was in theright place.”
An honor roll student with a goodattendance record, Walter says he “likes theenvironment at GLTS. It is easy to talk topeople and make friends.” ISS instructorCharles Pouliot nominated Walter “for bothhis outstanding classroom work and hisexceptional attitude. Walter maintains highhonor grades. He is always willing to helpother students, and he is respected equallyby his peers and teachers.”
Outside of school, Walter enjoysplaying football with his friends in his sparetime. Following high school graduation, heintends to go to college and seek a career ininformation technology.

The Office of Jury Commissioner iswarning the public to beware of a juryduty telephone scam, after receiving aflurry of reports that this nationwideidentity theft con has recently reachedMassachusetts. Citizens from around thestate have received calls from peopleclaiming to be court officials chasingscofflaws who have missed jury duty.When the target protests that they knewnothing of the supposedly missed juryduty, the caller demands personalidentifying information (such as SocialSecurity numbers and dates of birth) toconfirm that the target is not at risk of fineor arrest.
“This is a particularly ingenious scambecause it preys on people’s fears andindignation at being falsely accused ofbreaking the law,” said Pamela J. Wood,Jury Commissioner for theCommonwealth. “The scam artist willoften pose as a sheriff or court officer, andstate that you or someone close to you,such as your child or spouse, has missedjury duty and will be fined or arrested ifthey don’t report to the court immediately.Because the caller isn’t selling somethingor directly asking for personalinformation, the target often doesn’trecognize the scam and is only too eagerto offer information to persuade the callerthat they’ve made a mistake.” The juryduty scam has been reported in manyother states over the past year, but is onlynow appearing in Massachusetts.
The telephone call is a clearindication that the call is bogus,according to Commissioner Wood. Shereports that neither the Office of JuryCommissioner nor the courts ever contactjurors by telephone regarding their juryservice. While skipping jury duty willlead to reminder notices and eventualprosecution if not resolved, allcommunications are sent through the mail.A person who has missed jury duty willbe instructed to call the Office of JuryCommissioner, but only after receivingwritten notice by mail with details aboutthe date and place of their missed juryservice.

If you receive a telephone callclaiming that you or someone you knowhas missed jury duty, under nocircumstances should you give the callerany personal information about yourselfor anyone else. Forty parents from Lawrence,Andover, North Andover and Methuencame to the Greater LawrenceEducational Collaborative in Methuen onMonday night, January 29, to watch aspecial Academic Bowl exhibition matchbetween 23 students representing ten ofthe eighteen schools in the tournament.The evening match was organized by theAcademic Bowl Parent Committee to giveworking parents a chance to see theirchildren in action in the Academic Bowl,an in-school activity. The studentscompleted in hands-on activities as theirparents watched and then finished offthe evening with a buzzer round.
The hands-on activities included avery difficult “artist-observer” problem,a 15 letter “scrabble multiplication”problem and an initiative which requiredmaking a contraption from odd sizedcardboard that could be guided andpropelled to knock down bottles ofdifferent sizes placed at varyingdistances. In the artist-observer problemthe artist had to draw a picture from thedescription of the observer, whose jobwas to describe the picture to the artist.In the scrabble multiplication problem,the students had to create a grid ofwords from given letters such that thelength of the words, when multipliedtogether, created the highest possiblescore. The competition was very closeand exciting.
When the evening was over, it wasthe Orange Team that prevailed, scoring19 points, to Blue’s 18 and Red’s 17. Theevening concluded with a group photoand t-shirts for all the players. Manyparents were impressed with theoutstanding performance and teamworkof the students and several new parentsvolunteered to join the Academic BowlParent Committee, which produced theevent.
The Greater Lawrence AcademicBowl is a five month academiccompetition involving more than 300 7th
and 8th graders from virtually all of themiddle schools in Lawrence, Andover,North Andover, Methuen andGeorgetown. It was started in 1987 as ameans of promoting academic excellenceand fostering teamwork betweenneighboring communities. This is its 21st
season. For these students the AcademicBowl strives to: increase theirknowledge, develop their skills, stimulatetheir imaginations, showcase theirtalents, strengthen their character, andbuild new friendships, appreciation andunderstanding between people ofdiverse backgrounds.
The Academic Bowl is produced bythe Multicultural Enrichment Partnershipof the Greater Lawrence EducationalCollaborative (GLEC). The AcademicBowl is unique in that it pairs school fromdifferent communities to form teams.Every year the pairing of schoolschanges.
