Universidad de Massachusetts aprobaron por unanimidad la nominación deMarty Meehan como Canciller del Campo de Lowell, que hiciera el PresidenteJack Wilson.

Meehan, de 50 años de edad, fue electo en 1992 por primera vez y esPresidente del Armed Services Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations.

Mientras que algunos críticos no comprenden el por qué de que ahora queel poderoso congresista está en el tope de su popularidad y con los demócratascontrolando el Senado y la Cámara, él quiera irse; mientras que otros especulanque no era el candidato idóneo.

A los primeros, queremos decirle: Este es el tiempo de él para irse, cuandosu popularidad está por las nubes y porque fue su resume la razón por la quele ofrecieron el trabajo. A los segundos, eso fue decidido por la Junta Fiduciariade U-Mass.

The 19-voting members of the Board of Trustees at the University ofMassachusetts have unanimously approved President Jack Wilson’s nominationof Marty Meehan as Chancellor of the Lowell campus.

Meehan, 50, was first elected for Congress in 1992 and is Chairman ofthe Armed Services Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations.

While some critics can’t understand why, now that the powerfulcongressman is at his peak in popularity and with Democrats controlling boththe House and the Senate, he wants to leave; others speculate that he was notthe best qualified candidate for the job.

To the first, we can tell them: This is the perfect time for him to leave,when he’s flying high and because of his résumé he’s been offered this job. Tothe second, that was decided by U-Mass Trustees.

In a written statement, Congressman Meehan said that this “has been themost difficult professional decision of my life,” also said, “Serving in Congresshas its advantages, but being away from your family three to four nights aweek is not one of them.”

From this column we want to thank Congressman Martin Meehan for hisservice, and wish him success in his new career.

US Congressman Marty Meehan has

been chosen for the position ofChancellor of the University ofMassachusetts, Lowell Campus.

On Wednesday, March 14, 2007, the19 members of the Board of Directors tooka unanimous vote and approved theselection made by U-Mass President, JackWilson. “I’m honored to have beenselected by President Wilson to be thenext Chancellor of the University ofMassachusets-Lowell,” said Meehan.

Meehan was chosen over DavidChang, chancellor of PolytechnicUniversity in Brooklyn, N.Y., and NabilIbrahim, vice chancellor for academicaffairs and chief academic officer atPurdue University, Calumet, in Indiana.In a brief televised press conference, afterMeehan confirmation, U-Mass PresidentWilson expressed that he based hisdecision on “Meehan passion for theCollege” among other things. A CELTIC CELEBRATIONAndover musicians George and Terri Kelley will appear in concert at the Lawrence

Public Library on Sunday, March 25th, 2007 at 2:00pm.The husband and wife duo will present Celtic music ranging from Ancient Gaelic airs to

current songs. The music includes solos, duets, and piano pieces. Terri will play theLibrary’s historic 1914 Steinway piano, which she played at the age of 8 on radio stationWLAW.

The Kelley’s began singing together professionally about 10 years ago. The concert ispresented and supported by The Friends of the Lawrence Public Library, and The IrishFoundation.

¡FELIZ CUMPLEAÑOS ENMANUEL!Enmanuel (Manny) Acosta cumple 19 años el 19 de abril, 2007, y sus padres, Rogelio yVicky Acosta quieren felicitarlo por este medio.

Manny, por su parte, quiere agradecerles a ellos por todo su apoyo. “Ellos han sido mifuerza y mis deseos de seguir adelante. Vivo orgulloso de ellos, son padres ejemplares.Como ellos no hay otros”, dice Manny de sus padres.

Todavía no acabo de entender cuál esla forma de lucha que promueven algunoslíderes nuestros para defender los derechosciviles.

Particularmente hay que hablar del casoespecífico de los indocumentados. Esa esuna lucha que se ha estado activando cadavez que las circunstancias así lo handeterminado. Sobre todo para hacer frentea los irracionales que llegan incluso alextremo de descalificar al ser humanosimplemente por su condición deindocumentado.

En ese tenor, he leído unasdeclaraciones de María Elena Letona, unadestacada activista hispana que hoy esdirectora ejecutiva de Centro Presente deMassachusetts, una organización que porigual nació y ha estado siempre en latrinchera defendiendo los derechos de losinmigrantes.

Me llamó la atención el hecho de queLetona dijo que resultan “decepcionantes”recientes declaraciones del gobernador deMassachusetts, Deval Patrick, en las queadvertía la penalización a que se exponíanlas compañías contratadas por el gobiernoestatal que a su vez utilicen los servicios deindocumentados.

Aquí estamos en la parada de lo legal ylo irracional. Por más consecuente quequiera ser el gobernador Deval con la luchade los indocumentados, nadie,absolutamente nadie, sin caer en loirracional, puede pedirle que haga locontrario de lo que ha dicho.

Letona sabe que su queja es irracionaldesde cualquier óptica que se mire. Hacometido un error de apreciación muycomún cuando en política se pretende medircon el mismo rasero al ayer candidato ygobernante hoy.

Claro que una cosa es con violín y otracon tambora. Letona no puede pedirle aPatrick que actúe y hable hoy, igual quecomo hablaba y actuaba ayer, No, deninguna manera. Un gobernante se debe amuchos intereses, los cuales debe tratar desortear de la manera más equilibrada yjusticiera posible.

No puede pedírsele al gobernador, pormás defensor de los derechos civiles quesea, que utilice los fondos del estado parafacilitar empleos a personasindocumentadas. Personas que, quiéraseentender o no, de alguna forma son reos dela ley.

Lo que Letona —y quienes como ella

piensan—, pretenden que el gobernadorDeval Patrick renuncie a su investidura ycon los fondos del contribuyente sededique a promover la ilegalidad.

Es verdad que los indocumentados sonseres humanos y que tienen derecho comoel que más de los legales a sobrevivir y atrabajar honradamente, pero ¡por Dios! queno se pretenda que eso se propicie

ignorando la ley y con fondos públicos.Sobretodo cuando ni tan abundantes estánaquí los empleos para quienes la ley amparaen ese sentido.

Letona tiene que entender que en estosprocesos –como es la lucha en defensa delos indocumentados—unas se pierden yotras se ganan. Sino que se mire un poquitohacia atrás cuando no bien había tomadoposesión, ese mismo Patrick fue quien dejósin efecto un burdo e irracional acuerdo desu antecesor, Mitt Romney, mediante el cualse autorizaba a la policía estatal a perseguira los indocumentados en el estado.

O lo que es lo mismo, por qué no serecuerda cuando ese mismo Deval Patrickdefendió la comunidad inmigrante en elfragor de la campaña, sin importarle que suoponente del partido republicano, KerryHealey, pretendiera inútilmente darle ungolpe bajo por favorecer públicamente laexpedición de licencias de conducir paraindocumentados.

Esto no es cuestión de que con Dios ocon el Diablo. Es cuestión de matices. Lo deblanco o negro es cuestión del pasado, ypor más solidarios que pretendamos ser connuestros indocumentados, eso jamás debellevarnos hasta el extremo de lo irracional.

DESBROZANDO EL CAMINOEntre lo legal y lo irracional

Es verdad que losindocumentados sonseres humanos y quetienen derecho como elque más de los legales asobrevivir y a trabajarhonradamente, pero¡por Dios! que no sepretenda que eso sepropicie ignorando laley y con fondospúblicos.


El martes por la noche del día 6 demarzo, 2007, el Alcalde James J. Fiorentinientregó su discurso sobre el estado de laciudad en la Cámara del Concilio de laciudad, destacando el progreso hechosobre los pasados tres años, los retos quehay por delante y un plan para resolveresos retos. “Haverhill ha mejorado yestamos muy esperanzados”, dijo el Alcaldeante los Concejales.

Haverhill tres años atrás…

“Tres años atrás, la estación debomberos de Bradford estaba cerrada y labiblioteca a punto de cerrar. Tres años atrás,nuestra ciudad estaba al borde de serintervenida por el estado. Hoy, nos estamosmoviendo hacia delante y estamos a puntode algo grandioso… Pero nuestrosproblemas continúan. Hoy, los edificios deantiguas fábricas, vacantes por más de 50años, están siendo utilizados de nuevo,como viviendas. Hoy, Target, Lowes,Starbucks y BJ ’s van a abrir este año.

Nuestro éxito ha sido ensalzado en elBoston Globe, Banker and Tradesman, elBoston Business Journal y másrecientemente en el Wall Street Journal.Haverhill está progresando y la esperanzaha regresado.

No fue por accidente quellegamos allí…

Se logró gracias al duro trabajo de ungran equipo en el ayuntamiento, con laayuda de muchos ciudadanos dedicadosque ofrecieron ideas y sugerencias,sirvieron en las juntas, limpiaron la ciudady en general, ayudaron a mover a la ciudadhacia delante.

Trabajamos juntos para…• Consolidar el gobierno de la ciudad.• Reformar el cuidado de salud.• Cambiar las leyes zonales.• Convertir fábricas viejas de zapatos en

viviendas.• Cambiar la ley para permitir que Target,

Lowes, BJ’s y Starbucks abran.• Mejorar la tarifa de interés de nuestro

bono, por dos años consecutivos.• Atraer millones de dólares para un garaje

nuevo para estacionamiento.• Atraer más de un millón de dólares para

un paseo marítimo en la zona comercial.• A pesar del progreso, serios problemas

continúan. Aún confrontamos problemasserios a los que tenemos que hacer frente.

• Administrar nuestro crecimiento y éxito.• Problemas financieros continuos.• Mejorar la educación pública.

Administrando el éxito

Nuestro primer problema es uno quevale la pena tener: ¿Cómo administramosnuestro éxito?

Aunque el crecimiento residencial hareducido su avance sustancialmente,nuevos negocios están creciendo en laciudad. El área comercial, que ha estadovacante se está llenando de personas yautos.

Todo esto es bueno, pero debe seradministrado.

En general, nuestro plan de crecimientoestá funcionando: empujar crecimiento haciael área comercial donde tenemos lainfraestructura y controlar el crecimiento enlas zonas distantes.

He aquí algunos de los otros pasos queestamos tomando y tomaremos paraadministrar el éxito:

• Un garaje nuevo en la zona comercial.• Desarrollar un plan maestro para la zona

comercial como primer paso a un planmaestro para toda la ciudad.

• Desarrollar un Plan Maestro de EspacioAbierto que designe áreas para quepermanezcan abiertas para siempre.

• Desarrollar nuevas ordenanzas queprotejan los árboles.

• Adoptar nuevos planes y leyes parausar lo que llamamos reglas dedesarrollo de bajo impacto.

Desarrollar nuestras finanzas

1. Continuar el control del costo delcuidado de salud.

2. Hacer el gobierno más eficiente.3. Facilitar los permisos para atraer más

negocios.4. Examinar nuevas fuentes de ingreso y

nuevos métodos de control de costoincluyendo bonos de pensiones,impuestos a telecomunicaciones yopciones de impuestos locales.

Mejorar la educación pública

Este es nuestro mayor y más importantereto. Hemos incrementado los fondos parala educación pública en millones de dólares.Sabemos que la educación debe tener losfondos adecuados, pero también sabemosque no es sólo dinero lo que necesita. Esacerca de estándares y prioridades.

Necesitamos:

a. Expandir nuestro programa escolar deverano.

b. Reactivar nuestro comité de deserciónescolar.

c. Tener tutoría obligatoria para aquellosen peligro de fallar en las pruebas deMCAS.

d. Ajustar nuestros textos con el currículo.e. Dar al Dr. Buchanan la oportunidad de

éxito.

Ahorro de energía

La energía de nuestra ciudad nos cuestaalrededor de $4 millones al año—una cifraque incluye el alto costo de mantenernuestras plantas de agua pura y aguasmauras y pagar por el alumbrado de laciudad. Para controlar los costos de energía,hemos cambiado muchos de nuestrosedificios a luces de energía eficiente,establecido políticas de control de energía,e instalado ventanas y puertas queconservan energía, y mucho más. Perotenemos que hacer más.

El año que viene, los costos deutilidades están estimados a aumentar enun 10%. Yo he establecido el Grupo deEnergía del alcalde, bajo el eficienteliderazgo de Mike Labonte, para queencuentre formas de ahorrar energía asícomo usar combustibles alternos.

Una de las cosas que estamos mirandoes lo que llaman ‘performance contracting’,una nueva ley de Massachusetts que hacemás fácil para nosotros el contratarcontratistas y pagarles con el resultado denuestros ahorros de reacondicionarnuestros edificios.

Conclusión:

Según estoy aquí parado esta noche,Haverhill ha hecho grandes progresos. Estanoche puedo decirles lleno de confianza –Haverhill está avanzando y la esperanza haregresado. Pero por todo nuestro éxito, sitrabajamos juntos, nuestros mejores díasestán por venir”, concluyó el AlcaldeFiorentini.

El Servicio de Impuestos Internos (IRS)ha iniciado en esta temporada tributaria unaversión por Internet de su popular Tallerpara Organizaciones Exentas, Stay Exempt -Tax Basics for 501(c)(3)s, que cubre temasdel cumplimiento de las leyes tributariaspara organizaciones exentas de impuestospequeñas y medianas, incluyendo caridadese iglesias.

“Es parte del esfuerzo por incrementarel cumplimiento a través de la información yeducación”, comentó Sara Eguren, portavozdel IRS. “Aunque esté disponible en inglés,este taller electrónico gratuito podría ayudara muchas organizaciones latinas que por ser

En 2005, 106.3 millonesde estadounidenses recibieron cheques dereembolsos de impuestos por una cantidadpromedio de $2,141. Con frecuencia aparecen en losmedios de comunicación, noticias quehablan de hijos que amenazan o inclusopegan a sus padres o a sus abuelos. Seestá escribiendo sobre la ‘tiranía de loshijos’. ¿Cómo se llega a esta situación?En bastantes ocasiones por transigir,por ceder en situaciones en que sedebía mantener la autoridad de lospadres. En el fondo puede haber elmiedo que tienen los padres de perderel amor de sus hijos y llegan a dejarsetiranizar por éstos como esclavosdóciles y angustiados. Pero los padrestienen la capacidad de educar a sushijos, con una libertad responsable, nouna libertad esclava, y con verdaderoamor a los pequeños, no un amoresclavo. Esta capacidad de los padresdebe ser cultivada constantemente.

Educar es prestar una ayuda alprotagonista precario de quien seeduca. El chico es el agente de supropia educación, pero necesita laayuda de los mayores.

La educación se propone la mejorade todo el ser humano en su conjunto,en todas las dimensiones de suexistencia. El profesor Víctor García Hozdestaca estos aspectos: intelectual,ético, estético, técnico y religioso. Laeducación intelectual pretende alcanzarla verdad, el aspecto ético busca el bienen todas sus manifestaciones; laeducación estética desarrolla lacapacidad de descubrir y saborear labelleza; el aspecto técnico pretendealcanzar lo útil y la educación religiosapretende conocer y vivir las relacionescon Dios como Creador del hombre.

Si falta alguna de estasdimensiones, la educación esincompleta y parcial, y puede darse porcualquier modalidad manipulativa o por‘miopía educativa’.

No puede limitarse la educación alas posibilidades humanas del tener ydel hacer, con olvido del ser. Enocasiones la educación se enfoca haciael hacer y se pretende que el chico sepahacer operaciones aritméticas,problemas, redacciones, exámenes,oposiciones, etc. con el fin de alcanzarel éxito social y el progreso material. Setrataría de saber hacer más para tenermás cosas (casas, coches,electrodomésticos, etc.) De esta formala educación se reduce a una relaciónhacer-tener y en muchos sectoressociales ésta es la educación solicitada,porque es la educación para la eficacia.

Pero la educación completa exigela consideración de la educación depersonas. Y éste requiere relacionar elser humano no sólo con el tener, sinotambién con el ser.

Lazarus House Ministries y CambridgeCollege, que recientemente habían unidoesfuerzos para ofrecer el programa “Inglésen 24 Horas”, vieron graduar la primeraclase del programa de ESL (Inglés comosegundo idioma). Siete estudiantes queparticiparon del programa de ocho semanasde duración, recibieron sus diplomas elpasado viernes, 9 de marzo, 2007.

ESL provee a muchos inmigrantes yotros la oportunidad de aprender y mejorarel dominio del idioma inglés, aumentandograndemente su oportunidad de obtener ymantener empleos y de esta forma disfrutaruna mejor vida mientras que obtienenmejores empleos.

La Directora Ejecutiva de LazarusHouse, H. Bridget Shaheen, no solamenteda crédito a Cambridge College sino aPutnam Investment los cuales, el añopasado, concedieron una dádiva de $90,000a través de su programa de Iniciativa Local,para combatir la pobreza y carencia devivienda y también a la dádiva de liderazgode la Stevens Foundation en apoyo de esteprograma. “Todos los días le damos graciasa Dios por la gente buena que reconoce elvalor de cada vida humana y su potencial,dándoles la oportunidad de vivir sussueños.

El programa de entrenamiento detrabajo de Lazarus House, provee a hombresy mujeres que no son elegibles para otrosprogramas tradicionales de entrenamiento,la oportunidad de obtener destrezas detrabajo, entrenamiento, y experiencia através de Spark*L.E. Clearing Services, unservicio de limpieza comercial y residencial,que provee entrenamiento mientras trabajay empleo para trabajadores entrenados quecalifiquen.

Cada participante que asista alprograma de ESL a través del Entrenamientode Trabajo, trabaja 30 horas a la semana yse le pagan 10 horas adicionales poreducación de ESL. Una vez graduados, losentrenados son empleados a tiempocompleto por siete meses adicionales,ganando experiencia mientras aumentan suconfianza en sí mismos. UN PUNTO DE VISTA

En mi artículoanterior introduje unnuevo concepto de“ser” y “hacer,”probablemente debídecir “ser” o “hacer,”porque pienso quetiene tremendasconsecuencias para el

futuro de nuestra forma de vida y la demuchos otros en este planeta. Y lo que esmás importante, las vidas de quienescomparten este momento particular de lahistoria con nosotros.

No podemos detener la forma en quemuchas gentes operan en sus vidas. Elasunto es demasiado complejo, el intentodemasiado intruso, la práctica muyirrespetuosa.

El comportamiento humano proviene delindividuo hasta cierto punto, pero esmuchas veces una característica cultural.Después de muchos miles de años deevolución y adaptación nacemos con lacapacidad de hablar, algunos dicen quehasta la capacidad de creer en algo mayorque nosotros, pero es nuestra cultura,nuestras familias, nuestro ambiente, los queestablecen lo específico. Es ahí donde resideel diablo: en los detalles.

Como nos aproximamos a este dilema ala vez que a los desafíos que confrontamoscomo nación y como cultura en este mundonuevo y bravo donde ciertas gentes sesuicidan volándose con dinamitaeliminando a cualquier inocente que estécerca de ellos simplemente porque quierenser lo que siempre han sido y desean quesea eternamente es importante. Nosenfrentamos a un fenómeno histórico de“ser” y como consecuencia debemosproveer una respuesta de “ser” también. Paraprobar mi punto de vista quiero discutir unasunto que es sintomático de las culturasque operan en uno de los dos paradigmas:el servicio militar obligatorio.

El servicio militar obligatorio le da a unpaís sabor de “ser” como ninguna otra cosa.“Los Estados Unidos establecieron elservicio militar en la Primera Ley deConscripción Nacional de 1792. Desde esemomento, la conscripción se usó cada vezque la nación se vio amenazada por fuerzasexternas como ocurrió durante la guerra de1812 declarada contra los ingleses. Fueusada de nuevo cuando los Estados Unidosentraron en la Guerra Mundial de 1917. Elprimer reclutamiento en tiempo de paz secreó con la Ley de Servicio Selectivo de1940 que creó al Sistema de ServicioSelectivo, una agencia federalindependiente.

En realidad nos habíamos convertidoen un país donde el servicio militarobligatorio era una perpetua y normal“condición de ser,” no simplemente una“responsabilidad de hacer.” Era parte denuestra característica y en todo el mundose sabía que éramos una nación lista ypreparada para la guerra. Cuando yo emigréa los Estados Unidos sabía que laconscripción era ley federal y se requeríaque yo, y todos los varones que vinieron aesta nación con intenciones de hacerseciudadanos de los Estados Unidos, nos

registráramos con el Sistema de ServicioSelectivo y posible servicio militar. No haymanera mejor de demostrar nuestro deseode vivir en un país que expresando nuestradisponibilidad a morir por él. Fue bajo estaconstante filosofía de nuestro deber deresponder a la amenaza del comunismo quenos envolvimos en Vietnam.

Algunos aceptan, y otros no, lacomparación entre la guerra de Vietnam y elconflicto presente en Irak. Me gusta la ideade ir hacia atrás en el tiempo en que peleamosesa guerra porque fue la última vez cuandopeleamos bajo la filosofía de “ser.” Cuandolos Estados Unidos se embarcaron en lo queha sido generalmente aceptado como unaaventura descarriada, la nación estabatodavía operando bajo el modelo deconscripción militar. La califico dedescarriada porque las razonesfundamentales que nos hicieron entrar enese conflicto han sido condenadas por lahistoria. Después que dejamos esa naciónel mundo no se volvió comunista y nuestrallamada “teoría de dominó” se disolvió.Muchos de los miles de personas queescaparon de Vietnam han regresado desdeentonces para visitar, invertir o vivir, ynuestros negocios y aún presidentes se hansentado a comer en el mismo lugar quebombardeamos y donde nuestras tropasmurieron.

La oposición a esa guerra se inflamópor el hecho de que todos estábamosafectados o envueltos de una manera u otray porque podíamos ser llamados en uninstante a servir en el frente de batalla de unconflicto que se hacía menos y menoslógico cada día. La conscripción esparticipación y también es responsabilidad.A nadie le atrae la idea de ir ciegamente auna guerra guiados por la idea de alguiensobre como deben vivir los demás. Una cosaes defender nuestro terruño, otra es atacara alguien porque tenemos una idea peculiarde cómo ese alguien o sus seguidoresdeben vivir sus vidas.

Desde luego, el precio de los enojos ylas controversias que le siguieron resultóen el fin del servicio militar obligatorio.Nuestra filosofía como nación de “seres”se convirtió en una de “hacedores,”profesionales calificados, gente queposeían la mente de “comenzar, hacer yterminar” de la filosofía de los que hacen.Morir en el frente de batalla siguió siendoun honor, pero también se convirtió en unriesgo ocupacional. Y pelear no era unaexperiencia nacional, se convirtió en unejercicio minoritario. La famosa frase de losindolentes patéticos dice mucho: “Bueno,ellos firmaron como voluntarios y recibenpaga, así es que no deben sorprenderse simueren en el proceso.” Es decir, muchosjustifican los resultados, aún los mástrágicos, porque no estamos envueltos yconsideramos la guerra una experienciaexótica y económica.

Hay muchos beneficios en esa formade pelear. Los conocemos todos. Losconscriptos no van a durar aún cuando laconscripción lo haga. Los profesionalesestán mejor entrenados y organizados ypueden demandar más de sí mismos y deotros. Y la lucha es similar a una cirugía que

se detiene tan pronto como la incisión seacompleta; en otras palabras, “hecho.”

Sin contar la Guerra del Golfo de 1991que duró solamente unas semanas, y la delos Balcanes que duró un poco más y fueronempresas internacionales, las guerras de Iraky Afganistán son los primeros conflictosde larga duración que hemos enfrentadobajo nuestro nuevo modelo. En Afganistánhemos sido capaces de invocar y agruparsuficiente cooperación internacional departe de la OTAN para eliminar algunas delas presiones a nuestras fuerzas militares,pero esa lucha está ahora en su sexto año,la de Irak en el cuarto. Así que aquellos queclaman que a Irak le ha tomado más tiempoque la Segunda Guerra Mundial se olvidanque las tropas de Afganistán han estadoallí mucho más tiempo.

Sabemos que la razón por la que unaestá bajo el radar y la otra no, se relacionacon sus causas y si nos sentimosemocionalmente o no parte de ellas.Después de Septiembre 11 del 2001 nadieha puesto en dudas, ni debería, nuestroderecho de defender la integridad nacionalde este país, podríamos decir, de estacivilización. Todavía estamos heridoscuando tenemos que remover los zapatosen las salidas de los aeropuertos y lorecordamos de nuevo. Debemos defendernuestra participación porque el otro ladoestá pacientemente “siendo” todo lo quesea necesario en la esperanza de quevolvamos a la mentalidad de “hacer” quesatura nuestra filosofía y perdamos lapaciencia o la energía y simplemente nosdebilitemos mientras ellos continúanviolando los derechos de otras personaspor imponer sus creencias irracionales.

Es evidente que la voluntad depermanecer en Afganistán ha sobrevividoal tiempo y se está convirtiendo en unejercicio a largo plazo con no fin en vista.Se está convirtiendo en forma de “ser” paralos Estados Unidos y la OTAN. En Irak,desde luego, la controversia se ha vueltotan acrimoniosa como lo fue durante laguerra de Vietnam y contiene todas lascaracterísticas de un proyecto de “hacer”para el presidente de nuestra nación ytambién para sus detractores Demócratasque no pueden “hacer” cosa alguna para

cambiarlo. El Presidente jamás debeconfrontar una demora constitucional o deprocedimiento para responder con vigor aun ataque, pero hacerlo con anticipaciónbasado en sospechas solamente es otracuestión, y tal fue el caso con Irak.

Desde su comienzo Irak ha sido unfiasco enorme de la categoría de “hacer.”Fue un plan de “empezar, pelear, y parar”que se hizo astillas. Primero fuimos bajoexcusas que no habían sido propia yoportunamente evaluadas si es que nomanipuladas. Fue una decisión precipitadapor parte de unos hombres que carecían deexperiencia militar directa a quienes no lesimportaba su veracidad bajo la impresióntonta de que sería un paseo.

Nuestra pérdida de prestigio y fuerzamoral en el mundo ha sido catastrófica; másde tres mil soldados de la pequeña coaliciónmuertos, la mayoría de los Estados Unidos;más de veinte mil heridos, muchos de loscuales han sido enviados a una facilidadhospitalaria que ahora hemos descubiertohacía una labor limitada de “apoyar anuestras tropas.” Tal vez debíamos enviarlesunas etiquetas engomadas de defensas deautos para recordarles ese lema tan familiar.

Desde luego, ignoramos los dosmillones de refugiados iraquíes que se handesbordado sobre sus fronteras y elinimaginable número de sus propiosmuertos que no parecen importarle a nadie.Al final, hasta la experiencia militar ha sidoculpada por la convicción reciente de unalto miembro empleado en la Casa Blanca.Después de la ejecución de SaddamHussein, recientemente el Presidente haordenado enviar veintiún mil soldadosadicionales para controlar la seguridad deBagdad solamente y los militares estánpidiendo cuatro mil más para servir deguardias en las prisiones. En otras palabras,la nación que intentábamos liberar estáconvirtiéndose rápidamente en una prisiónenorme que debemos observar. Y nuestrosenemigos allá, desde luego, solamenteesperan y se sientan cómodamente hastaque nos cansemos de todo esto y noslarguemos. Ellos son una sociedad de “ser”que no reconocimos y tratamos de cambiara otra cultura de “hacer” y fallamosmiserablemente en el esfuerzo.

Todo esto significa solamente un cosapara mí: nos guste o no, los Estados Unidostienen que tomar una actitud de “ser” másclara en lo que se refiere a la conducta desus operaciones militares y comenzar eldiálogo curativo propio de un país queahora debe vivir por largo tiempo, tal vezvarias generaciones, bajo los dictados deun nuevo paradigma. Tenemos queconversar los unos con los otros yponernos de acuerdo los unos con losotros. Eso solo puede hacerse sirestauramos el servicio militar obligatoriode nuevo. Y ese será el sujeto de mi próximoartículo. Pero por ahora, éste es mi Punto deVista.

La Sociedad Americana delCáncer urge a los hombres y alas mujeres para que sesometan a pruebas dedetección

Marzo es el Mes Nacional de la Luchacontra el Cáncer del Colon. La SociedadAmericana del Cáncer aprovecha estaoportunidad para elevar la concienciaciónde que el cáncer del colon (comúnmentereferido como “cáncer del colon”, la terceracausa más importante de fallecimientos porcáncer tanto en hombres como en mujeresestadounidenses, se puede prevenir en granmedida.

En enero, la Sociedad Americana delCáncer reportó que los fallecimientos porcáncer disminuyeron por segundo añoconsecutivo. El estudio indicó que hubouna disminución significativa en lamortalidad debida al cáncer del colon.Aunque éstas son buenas noticias, laSociedad calcula que en 2007aproximadamente 154 estadounidensesrecibirán el diagnóstico de cáncer del colony que más de 52,000 fallecerán, un númeroque se podría reducir a la mitad si losestadounidenses siguieran lasrecomendaciones de la Sociedad Americanadel Cáncer respecto a los exámenes dedetección.

La Sociedad Americana del Cáncerindica que el aumento de las pruebas dedetección del cáncer del colon entre losadultos de 50 años de edad y más representala mayor oportunidad para reducir las tasasde fallecimiento por cáncer del colon.“Todas las personas mayores de 50 añosde edad tienen una maravillosa oportunidadde evitar completamente el desarrollo delcáncer o detectar la enfermedad en una etapatemprana”, dice Richard C. Wender, MD,presidente voluntario nacional de laSociedad. “Ya que la mayoría de laspersonas que padecen cáncer del colon notienen antecedentes familiares de estaenfermedad, esperar a que se presenten lossíntomas es un error trágico. Los síntomaspueden ser un signo de una enfermedad más

avanzada. La detección y extirpación de lospólipos antes de que se vuelvancancerosos, lo cual es posible hacer sinnecesidad de cirugía, puede ayudarnos avencer este importante cáncer asesino alprevenirlo por completo. Las pruebastambién pueden detectar el cáncer en susetapas tempranas. Si se detecta cáncer, sutratamiento antes de que se presenten lossíntomas puede aumentar dramáticamentela probabilidad de su curación. Cuando sedetecta en su etapa más temprana, que es laetapa más tratable, el cáncer del colon tieneuna tasa de supervivencia del 90 porciento.”

La recientemente reportada reducciónde los fallecimientos por cáncer del colonse atribuye principalmente a la deteccióntemprana, por ello es importante que todaslas personas de 50 años de edad y más sesometan a las pruebas de detección. Laspruebas también pueden ayudar a detenerla enfermedad antes de que comience. Laspruebas de detección de cáncer del colonpermiten a los médicos detectar y extirparcrecimientos ocultos (llamados “pólipos”)antes de que se vuelvan cancerosos. Laspruebas también pueden detectar el cánceren sus etapas tempranas. Cuando se detectaen su etapa más temprana, que es la etapamás tratable, el cáncer del colon tiene unatasa de supervivencia del 90 por ciento. Confrecuencia en las etapas tempranas delcáncer del colon no se presentan síntomas,razón por la cual las pruebas son tanimportantes. Las pruebas son especialmentecríticas para los estadounidenses de 50 añosde edad o más, ya que más de un 90 porciento de los casos de cáncer del colon sondiagnosticados en personas mayores de 50años de edad.

El artista camina muy de cerca con trespalabras que sin dudas identifican su diariotrajinar por el mundo de las artes, estas son:bohemio, trasmutar y nómada. Estos trestérminos son parte de su búsquedaconstante para la realización de su mejorobra.

Apoyado esto, podemos asegurar que,la principal razón por la cual el escultordominicano Freddy Cabral decidió alzarvuelo y marchar hacia otras tierras, es el irtras el encuentro de un mejor espacio endonde poder hacer de su amor por laescultura la mas elevada expresión de arte.Luego de permanecer en la ciudad deLawrence por algunos años, hoy este artistaplástico empaca sus sueños, y sus deseosde trascender y deja un lugar que como élmismo dijo, le abrió las puertas y le permitiómostrar sus obras.

El escultor se marchó de esta ciudaddejando en muchos la agradable sensaciónde haber tenido la oportunidad de conocera un sensible ser humano, que haencontrado en el misterio del mundocósmico una estrecha relación con la vida,con un mundo de luz y de sombrasembriagadoras que hacen sucumbir acualquiera que crea en la grandeza de lanaturaleza y en la inmensidad de la vida.

El pasado sábado, en la Librería Nobel,espacio que por mucho tiempo fue testigode horas repletas de pensamientos en buscade la mejor perspectiva para empezar unaobra, este artista dominicano habló sobresus trabajos de escultura y dejó reflejar lapasión que para él representa tomar unmaterial listo para reciclar y transformarloen una galaxia de sueños, angustias,esperanzas, sentimientos encontrados,fortaleza, elementos que pueden reducirsesolo en una palabra: Vida.

Con el rostro triste, Cabral abrazó aquienes ese día se dieron cita en Nobel paradecirle un hasta luego, sin dejar de repetirleque si por algún instante siente que lasoledad le asfixia en Tennessee, (donde fuea residir) recordara que hay un lugar en

Freddy Cabral ha sido definido como el“Rey del Metal” puesto que ha sabido hacerde este elemento de la naturaleza la mejormuestra de un arte puro, con obras que soncapaces de hacernos olvidar el mundomaterial en el cual vivimos y disfrutar de lasublimidad de la existencia. Con unatrayectoria en el mundo del arte de más de30 años, este artista, quien estudió en laEscuela Superior de Bellas Artes de París,ha sido galardonado en varias ocasionespor sus obras.

De igual modo ha presentadoexposiciones y obtenido numerososreconocimientos en Francia, Italia, Canadá,Cuba, Ecuador, Puerto Rico y aquí en losEstados Unidos.

El pasado año, este artista nos brindóla oportunidad de admirar sus obras enHealey Library, en U-MASS Boston, conuna exposición de esculturas realizadas enmetal y relieves.

Con unas manos mágicas el artista hatrabajo desde chatarras hasta metalespreciosos, logrando armonizar sinproblemas la brillantez y calidez del mundocósmico, donde hay cierta complicidad entrelo galáctico y la pasión carnal del serhumano.

Se marchó Freddy Cabral dejando a supaso imágenes de unas obras distintasdonde la amalgama de colores, de trazos, demisterio indescifrables se perpetúan en laluminosidad de los metales, los cualesemiten luz, paz y sin dudas son el mejorhomenaje a la vida.

Un hasta luego al artista, al ser humano,al amigo, al amante de la belleza yfuncionalidad, siempre en búsqueda delmejor color y la mejor forma de conjugar enla rigidez de una escultura el espíritu y lamateria, logrando abrir nuevos horizonteshacia lo intrínseco del universo.

La quinceañera tiene susorígenes siglos atrás, cuando chicosy chicas participaban en rituales deadolescentes.

Para prepararse para sermujeres, a la edad de 15 años, laschicas eran separadas de los otroschicos y de esta forma, las mujeresmayores, podían enseñarlas acercade su papel futuro como miembrosde la familia y la comunidad. Cardinal Sean O’Malley, OFM,Archbishop of Boston, visited CentralCatholic High School on Thursday, March8, as part of the school’s Spirit Week.

The cardinal celebrated Mass in theschool’s Memorial Gymnasium and talkedwith students and faculty during a smallreception in the Cardinal Richard CushingLibrary. Harvard University hasannounced that from now onundergraduate students from low-income families will pay no tuition.

Bergeron visited the WHAV.NETstudio last week in the Ward Hill section ofthe city. He praises his mentor, the late EdJohnson, and recalls his favorite momentsworking with news anchor Ralph Hall andthe late Bill Pike. LaPierre discusses thestation’s news coverage over the years,while Phil Christie, well-known for stints atWBZ and WHDH, talks about the station’searliest days.

The anniversary news special will firstair at 1 p.m., Friday, March 16 – 60 years tothe day and hour WHAV first beganbroadcasting from Haverhill. Haverhill Three years ago...“Three years ago, the Bradford fire

station in Bradford was closed and theLibrary on the verge to be closed. Threeyears ago, our city stood on the brink ofreceivership. Today, we are on the move andare on the brink of greatness... But problemsremain.

Today, old factory buildings, vacant forhalf a century, are being used again ashousing. Today, Target, Lowes, Starbucksand BJ’s are all opening this year.

Our success has been touted in theBoston Globe, Banker and Tradesman, theBoston Business journal and, most recently,in the Wall Street Journal. Haverhill is onthe move, and hope is back.

Getting there was no accidentIt took team work, and hard work by a

great team at City Hall, with the help of somany dedicated citizens who offered ideasand suggestions, served on boards, cleanedup the city, and generally helped move ourcity forward.

We worked together to• Consolidate city government• Reform health care;• Change zoning laws;• Turn old shoe shops into housing;• Rezone to allow Target, Lowes, BJ’s and

Starbucks to open.• Improve our bond rating two years in a

row;• Bring in millions of dollars for a new

parking garage;• Bring in over a million dollars for a new

downtown boardwalk.

Despite progress, serious problemsremain. We still face continued and seriousproblems we have to confront:

• Managing growth and success;• Continued financial problems;• Improving public education.

Managing SuccessOur first problem is a good one to have:

how do we manage our success? Althoughresidential growth has slowed substantially,new businesses are springing up aroundthe city. Downtown, areas that had beenvacant are filling with people and cars.

All of this is a good thing but it has tobe managed. Our overall growth plan isworking: pushing growth towards thedowntown where we have the infrastructureand controlling growth in outlying areas.Here are a few of the other steps we aretaking and will take to manage success:

• A new parking garage downtown;• Develop a downtown master plan as a

first step to a new city wide masterplan;

• Develop a new Open Space Master Planthat designates areas that will foreverremain as open space;

• Develop new ordinances to protecttrees;

business;4. Examine new revenue sources and new

methods of cost controls includingpension obligation bonds,telecommunications taxes and localoption taxes.

Improving public educationThis is our greatest and most important

challenge. We’ve increased funding forpublic education by millions of dollars. Weknow that education has to be adequatelyfunded, but we also know that money isn’tall there is to it. It is about standards andpriorities.

We need to:a. Expand our summer school program;b. Reactivate our Drop-out Committee;c. Have mandatory tutoring for those in

danger of failing the MCAS tests;d. Align our textbooks with the

curriculum;e. Give Dr. Buchanan a chance to succeed.

Saving EnergyOur total city energy costs are about

$4 million a year—a number which includesthe large cost of running our water andwaste water plants, and paying for streetlights throughout the city.

To control energy costs, we haveswitched many of our buildings to energyefficient lighting, established energy controlpolicies, installed energy efficient windowsand doors and more.

But, we need to do more. Utility costsare scheduled to go up by 10% next year. Ihave established the Mayor’s Energy TaskForce, under the able leadership of MikeLabonte, to find ways to save energy, anduse alternative fuels.

One of the things we are looking into iswhat is called ‘performance contracting.’ Anew Massachusetts law makes it easier forus to hire contractors and pay them out ofthe savings we get from retrofitting ourbuildings.

ConclusionTonight, as I stand before you,

Haverhill has made great progress. TonightI can tell you confidently, — Haverhill is onthe move, and hope is back. But for all oursuccesses, if we work together, our bestdays are yet to come,” concluded MayorFiorentini.

Mayor Draws Names ofCity Employees to Receive$50 Check Cards

On Friday, Mayor James J.Fiorentini drew the names of two Cityemployees who will each receive a$50 check cards as part of Haverhill’sColorectal Cancer ScreeningIncentive. Colorectal cancer,

according to theAmerican CancerSociety, is thethird mostcommon cancerfound in men andwomen in thiscountry.Fiorentini, whodonated one ofthe $50 checkcards said:

“Withcolorectal cancer,as with othertypes of cancer,the key to savinglives is earlydetection. Wedeveloped this

incentive plan to educate Cityemployees and to encourage them totake a proactive approach to theirhealthcare.”

In December, Havehill’s WorksiteWellness Committee developed theColorectal Cancer ScreeningIncentive for City employees,notifying them through payroll and/ore-mail notices and challenging thoseover the age of 50 to be screened.More than 9 out of 10 people foundto have colorectal cancer are olderthan 50 (American Cancer Society).

If an employee scheduled ascreening appointment by January 31,2007, they would be automaticallyentered into a drawing to win one oftwo $50 check cards. A total of 24employees scheduled screenings.

Each year, the City of Haverhilland Blue Cross and Blue Shielddevelop a Worksite Wellness Plan forCity employees. The plan benefitsboth the employees-by informingthem of valuable health and wellnessbenefits-and the City-by helping toreduce its healthcare costs.

The American Cancer Societyestimates that there will be about112,340 new cases of colon cancerand 41,420 new cases of rectal cancerin 2007 in the United States.Combined, they will cause about52,180 deaths.

Despite the help food stamps canoffer, Massachusetts still has one ofthe lowest food stamp participationrates in the country. To help offset thisproblem, Project Bread is partneringwith community-based organizationsacross the state, like the Neighbors inNeed and Supportive Care in Lawrence,to increase enrollment and awarenessof the Food Stamp Program.

These organizations are providingapplication assistance to clients byusing Project Bread’s online food stampapplication. This program, inpartnership with the Department ofTransitional Assistance (DTA), giveseligible applicants a convenient,supportive, and secure way to accessbenefits online.

Greater Lawrence Technical School,Andover, has announced its Students ofthe Month, recently honored at a luncheonin the school’s restaurant, the Edward V.Coakley Four Winds. They are two membersof the Class of 2008, Sabrina Dorsainvil ofLawrence and Peter Clancy of Methuen.

Sabrina specializes in GraphicCommunications at GLTS, a field she chosebecause “I love drawing, especially workingwith pastels.” She also enjoys working withPhotoShop software and other pre-pressoperations. Following high schoolgraduation, Sabrina intends to attend collegeand continue her study of both fine art andcomputer graphics.

At Greater Lawrence, Sabrina is anactive school citizen, a member of the varsitytrack team for three years, junior varsityvolleyball for two years and moved up tothe varsity squad this year. She is a memberof the GSA/Diversity Club, Student Council,and Program Advisory for GraphicCommunications. She recently traveled toBoston as one of two Greater Lawrencestudents honored during Women in SportsDay.

Sabrina has had perfect attendance“most of my life,” she says, including allthree years of high school thus far. Being atschool has contributed to her excellentgrades: she is a member of the NationalHonor Society. Sabrina was nominated asstudent of the month by Student Counciladvisor Jenna Simard.

“His writing skills are exceptional as hehas a sophisticated use of vocabulary, “she said. “He is passionate about readingand shows great talent in creative writing.He had the lead role of Romeo in the schoolplay and did not miss a single rehearsal inour three months of preparation.

A POINT OF VIEW

In my previousarticle I introduced anew concept of beingand doing, probably Ishould have saidbeing OR doing,because I feel it hast r e m e n d o u sconsequences for the

future of our way of life and that of manyothers on this planet. And what is mostimportant, the lives of those with whom weshare this particular moment in history.

We cannot stop the way some folksthink or operate in their lives. The issue istoo complex, the attempt too intrusive, thepractice too disrespectful. Human behaviorinvolves the individual to a certain extent,but mostly it is a cultural characteristic.After thousands of years of evolution andadaptation we are born with the capacity tospeak, some even say even with thecapacity to be a believer in something biggerthan us, but it is our culture, our families,our surroundings that set the specifics.That is where the devil is: in the details.

How we approach this dilemma as weface the challenges that we confront as anation and a culture in this brave new worldwhere people blow themselves up andanyone nearby just to be what they alwayshave been and want to be forever isimportant. We confront historicalphenomena of “being” and must provide a“being” response. So to support my pointof view I want to touch on a subject that issymptomatic of cultures that operate in oneof the two paradigms: the military draft.

Compulsory military service gives acountry a flavor of “being” like no other.The United States first formulatedcompulsory military service in The FirstNational Conscription Act of 1792. From thatmoment on, conscription was used now andagain when the country felt threatened byoutside forces as it was during the War of1812 declared against the Brits. Conscriptionwas next used after the United Statesentered World War I in 1917. The firstpeacetime conscription came with theSelective Service Act of 1940 that createdthe Selective Service System, anindependent agency.

In effect, the nation had become acountry where military service was a normaland perpetual “being condition,” not justsimply a “doing” responsibility. It was ourcharacteristic and folks throughout theworld knew that we were a nation at theready. When I migrated to the United StatesI knew that conscription was the law of theland and it was required that I, and all othermen who came to this country at the timewith the intention of becoming U.S. Citizens,register with the Selective Service Systemfor possible military service. There is nobetter way to reflect your desire to live in acountry than your willingness to die for it.It was under this constant philosophy ofdutiful response to the threat of communismthat we became involved in Vietnam.

Some people do and some don’t accepta comparison between the Vietnam War andthe current conflict in Iraq. I like the idea ofgoing back to the Vietnam War; because

that was the last we fought under the “being”philosophy. When the United Statesembarked on what is now generallyaccepted as a misguided adventure, thecountry was still operating under the militaryconscription model. I qualify it as misguidedbecause the rationale that sent us to thatconflict has been disproved by history. Afterwe left that country the entire world did notturn to communism as our so-called “dominotheory” feared. The thousands of peoplewho escaped from Vietnam have been backsince they left to visit, invest or live, andour businesses and even Presidents havesat to break bread on the same landscapewe bombed and where our troops died.

The opposition to that war was ignitedby the fact that we were all involved in oneway or the other by the mere fact that wecould be called any time to serve in a conflictthat became less and less logical as timewent by. Conscription is participation andso is responsibility. People don’t want togo to war blinded by someone’s idea of howthe other fellow should live. One thing is todefend your country, the other to attacksomebody else because we have a peculiaridea of how that fellow or his or her followersshould live their lives.

Of course, the price of thedisappointments and controversies thatfollowed resulted in the end of the draft.Our “being” as a nation and soldiersbecame “doing,” qualified professionals,folks who had the “start, go, finish” mindsetof those who believe in the doingphilosophy. Dying in the battlefieldremained an honor, but it also became anacceptable occupational hazard. Andfighting was not a broad national experience,it became a minority driven exercise. Thefamous phrase of the apathetic speaksvolumes: “Well, they signed as volunteersand get paid for it, so it is not surprisingthat they might die.” So they justify theresults, no matter how tragic, because weare not involved and consider the war aforeign experience as far as we areconcerned.

There are many benefits to thisapproach to fighting. We all know them.Conscripts are not going to be for theduration even if conscription is.Professionals are better trained andorganized and can demand more fromthemselves and others. And the fighting issimilar to a surgery that stops as soon asthe incision is complete; in other words,“done.”

Not counting the Gulf War of 1991 thatlasted only a few weeks, and the Balkan’sthat lasted a bit longer, the Iraq andAfghanistan wars are the first long lastingconflicts we have faced under our newmodel. In Afghanistan we have been ableto invoke and gather enough internationalcooperation from NATO to eliminate someof the pressures to our own forces, but thefighting is now in its sixth year, Iraq in itsfourth. So those who claim that Iraq istalking longer than the Second World Warare forgetting that the troops in Afghanistanhave been there longer.

We know that the reason why one isbelow the radar and the other isn’t is related

to their causes and how we share in them.After September 11 of 2001, no one hasquestioned, nor should they, our right todefend the national integrity of this country,we even should say, this civilization. Weare still wounded when we have to get ridof shoes at airport gates and rememberagain. We have and must defend ourinvolvement because the other side ispatiently “being” as long as it must in thehope that we will resort to the “doing”mentality that pervades our philosophy andwill lose patience or stamina and simply fadeaway while they continue to violate otherfolk’s rights in the name of their foolishbeliefs.

It is evident that the willingness to stayin Afghanistan has survived time and isturning into a long term exercise with noend in sight. It is becoming our way of“being” for the United States. In Iraq, ofcourse, controversy has started to becomeas acrimonious as it was during the VietnamWar because it shows all the characteristicsof a “doing” project for the President of ourcountry and also for his mainly Democratdetractors who can do nothing to changeit. The President should have noconstitutional or procedural delay inresponding to an attack with a vigorousdefense, but preemption is another matterand such was the case in Iraq.

Iraq has been a fiasco of the “doing”category in a big way from the get go. Itwas a “start, fight, stop” plan that went sour.First we went there under false pretenses

that were not properly and timely evaluatedif not manipulated. It was a rush to judgmentby men with little or no direct militaryexperience with no concern to its veracityand under the foolish impression that itwould be a cake walk. Our loss of prestigeand moral ground in the world has beencatastrophic; over three thousand soldiersof the small coalition killed, the majorityAmerican; over twenty thousand woundedmany of whom have been sent to a hospitalfacility that we now have discovered doesa poor job to “support our troops.” Perhapswe should send them bumper stickers toremind them.

Of course, we ignore the two millionIraqi refugees that have spilled over theirborders and the unknown number ofthousands of their own dead that don’tseem to matter. In the end, even the wholemilitary experience is blamed as backgroundof the recent conviction of a top member ofthe White House inner circle. After theexecution of Saddam Hussein recently thePresident is now sending twenty onethousand additional troops to control thesecurity situation in Baghdad alone and themilitary is requesting four thousand morefor prison guard duty. In other words, thecountry we intended to liberate is quicklybecoming a big jail we must watch. And ourenemies there, of course, just wait and situntil we get tired of it all and leave. They area “be” society we did not understand andtried to change into a “do” culture and failedmiserably.

All of this means only one thing to me:Like it or not, the United States has to takea more clear “be” attitude towards warfareand start the healing dialogue of a countrythat must live now and for a long time,perhaps generations, in the new paradigm.We have to talk to each other and agreewith each other. That can only be done byreestablishing the military draft one moretime. And that will be my next article. But fornow, that is my Point of View.

March is National Colorectal CancerAwareness Month. The American CancerSociety uses this opportunity to raiseawareness that colorectal cancer(commonly referred to as “colon cancer”) -the third leading cause of cancer deaths inboth men and women in the United States -is largely preventable.

In January, the American Cancer Societyreported that cancer deaths dropped for thesecond year in a row. The study noted thatthere was a significant decline in colorectalcancer mortality. Although this is goodnews, the Society estimates that in 2007,approximately 154,000 Americans will bediagnosed with colon cancer, and more than52,000 will die, a number that could be cut inhalf if Americans followed American CancerSociety screening recommendations. In2007 in Massachusetts 3,850 new cases ofcolorectal cancer will be diagnosed and 1,180residents will die from the disease.

The American Cancer Society saysincreasing colon cancer screening amongadults 50 and over represents the singlegreatest opportunity to decrease coloncancer death rates. “Everyone over 50 hasthe wonderful opportunity to avoiddeveloping colon cancer completely or tofind the disease in an early stage,” saysRichard C. Wender, MD, national volunteerpresident of the Society. “Since most peoplewith colon cancer do not have a familyhistory of the disease, waiting for symptomsto develop is a tragic mistake. Symptomscan be a sign of more advanced disease.Finding and removing polyps before theyturn into cancer, which can be done withoutsurgery, can help us defeat this major cancerkiller by preventing it altogether. The testscan also detect cancer in an early stage. If acancer is found, treating it before symptomsdevelop dramatically increases thelikelihood of a cure. When found at itsearliest, most treatable stage, colon cancerhas a 90 percent survival rate.”

The decline in colon cancer deathsrecently reported is largely attributed toearly detection, which is why it’s soimportant for everyone 50 and older to gettested. Getting tested can stop the diseasebefore it starts. Colon cancer tests canenable doctors to detect and remove hiddengrowths (called “polyps”) before theybecome cancerous. The tests can alsodetect cancer in an early stage. When foundat its earliest, most treatable stage, coloncancer has a 90 percent survival rate. Earlycolon cancer often has no symptoms, whichis why testing is so important. Getting testedis especially critical for Americans age 50and over as more than 90 percent of coloncancer cases are diagnosed in people overthe age of 50.

Boxing in thisarea is one of the mostwell attended events insports. Lowell has theGolden Gloves at theLowell MemorialAuditorium each year. Asthe tournament goes

from week to week the crowds grow andgrow and the seats become scarcer andfinally there are no tickets to be found. It isa great part of the Merrimack Valley andone can run into friends from all over whoget early tickets to attend each year. MickeyWard a great local favorite was part of itand the first time I ever saw him fight was atthe Gloves. We are still friends to this dayand he was a guest on my radio show manytimes.

Rocky Marciano, Sugar Ray Leonard,Marvelous Marvin Hagler, Leon Spinks, andVinnie Paz were Gold Glovers. Spinks andLeonard were in the Lowell tournament andso was Mike Tyson. There is a trophynamed after Marciano that is awarded tothe top heavyweight of the Tournament ofchampions.

The action starts with the New Englandnovice competition and some swear theseare the best bouts as some of the warriorsare street fighters or barroom brawlers whomaybe pack a haymaker but probably is asix-pack champ of his bar and a two-pack aday smoker, and the only shape he has everbeen concerned with is a mug or a keg or ashot glass of his favorite libation. Needlessto say when confronted with 3 rounds at 2minutes a round, the guy with a punch thatcould knock out a mule finds out that afterthrowing his best Sunday punch and justswinging at air is pretty tiring.

There are stories of novices that whenthey remove their shiny silky robe they arestanding there without trunks and only theirjockstrap. Which reminds me of an oldGolden Glove fans story of a novice whowas asked, “Are you nervous?”

“Not at all,” replies the fighter. Againthe trainer asks his fighter, “Are you sureyou’re not nervous?”

“Not a bit,” says the warrior.Before they go to the middle of the ring

to meet the opponent the trainer asks thesame question to his boy and this time theboy says, “I told you I wasn’t nervous atall, why do you keep asking?” Trainer says,“Well, most people wear their jocks insidetheir trunks not on the outside like you.”

Dicky Ecklund who is Ward’s brotherand a former novice and open divisionchampion says the atmosphere can’t bematched. Its electric he says and recallingthe loudness makes it hard to hear in yourcorner. Dicky who fought professionally andhad Sugar Ray Leonard down in a boutwhen the Sugarman was making a comebackin a bout in Lowell.

Arthur Ramalho is still a big part ofboxing in the upriver city and at one timetrained many of the combatants. He also atone time had is own gym. I remember a guynamed Teddy Coupe now deceased whoworked at the Lawrence Unemploymentoffice and he introduced me to the boxinggame and the excitement of the Gloves.

This year’s version marks the 60th yearof the event and the Lowell Sun has been asponsor throughout. The winners of thisyear’s tournament heads to the Nationalsto be held in Omaha Nebraska. Lowell hashosted the Nationals twice: once in 1973and again in 1995.

New England champs who went on towin National Titles were 1962, Ray Jutras;1969, Roosevelt Molden; 1979, RobertStewart; 1993, Tarvis Sims; 2000, StephenVukosa; 2002, Matthew Godfrey and JaidonCodrington.

Mickey Ward who was a participantsays that even when he won a world titleprofessionally he wasn’t more excited thanwhen performing in the Gloves.

It is said that the Lowell Sun Charitiesdonates one hundred and fifty thousanddollars annually to local charities as a resultof this extravaganza.

When Methuen Superintendent ofschools Zdanowicz asked me to hook himup with tickets to this event one year andstressed he wanted only good seats, I lethim use my press seats that were right onthe edge of the mat. He asked me ten times,“Are you sure these are good seats?” Ireplied, “So good you have to be carefulwhen they are on the ropes or in the corneryou could get a spray of anything.” He stilldidn’t feel too sure.

The following Wednesday after hisTuesday night attendance at the Gloves andwhen I asked him how he liked the seats helaughed and said when he got home his wifequestioned how he got the dab of blood onhis shirt. He finally said that was the bestseat he ever had at a fight.

I know first hand of the fun, excitement,and atmosphere that permeates this eventand say to you readers, it is every bit worththe price of admission. I’ve been to worldchampionship bouts in Vegas and AtlanticCity, and watch Vinnie Paz win a world titlein Providence and believe me the GoldenGloves doesn’t take a back seat to any ofthem.

Methuen resident Kerry Quinlan, headcoach of Northern Essex CommunityCollege’s baseball team, was recentlyselected from 392 coaches across thecountry to receive the American BaseballAssociation’s (ABA) Junior College Coachof the Year Award. In six years of coachingthe Knights, Quinlan’s team has won threestate titles and a regional title. Last year’steam made it to the World Series.

In addition to the ABA Coach of theYear award, Quinlan was recently named theMassachusetts Region 21 Coach of theYear and the 2006 Louisville Slugger Coachof the Year.

“Kerry Quinlan is a phenomenal coach,”says Sue MacAvoy, athletic coordinator atNorthern Essex. “He knows how to win but,more importantly, he is having atremendously positive impact on hisplayers, the great majority of whom aretaking two years at Northern Essex andtransferring to four year colleges anduniversities.”

For Quinlan, baseball is like breathing.A Newburyport native, he played baseballfor Newburyport High School before goingon to Nasson College in Springvale, Maine.After several knee surgeries, one finalblowout led to the benching of his baseballcareer.

His enthusiasm for the sport neverwavered however, and he worked asassistant baseball coach at UMass Bostonand Winnacunnet High School. When hearrived at NECC to assume the position ofhead coach, he says, the team was in “toughshape” with just 10 or 11 players.

After implementing the Quinlan Way,which is part discipline part parental-likeguidance, the team started turning aroundand began attracting some of the smartestplaying baseball players in the region.Players weren’t put off by his way or hisrules, which include no jewelry, no long hair,no tattoos that can be seen.

“I’m big on discipline,” Quinlan says,“Everything comes around todiscipline...everything in life whether it is inthe classroom or on the field. How youhandle yourself in the classroom is how youwill handle yourself on the field.”

His plan worked. The team won its firststate title with just 11 players. Under hisdirection it has gone on to win three statetitles. Last year the Knights played in thecommunity college World Series losing inthe second round. They are currently rankedeighth in the country for all junior collegedivision three schools.

Quinlan’s performance is gettingrecognition by players and parents alike.Each season he has nearly 50 young mentryout for the team including students whohave transferred out of division I anddivision II schools. Less than half of themmake the team.Those who do have the opportunity jumpstart their ball playing season by attendingspring training down south. This hasbecome a spring break tradition for Quinlanand his players.

The players are enjoying the attentionof the professional scouts and collegescouts who routinely attend the Knights’baseball games. In the last two years two ofhis former players signed major leaguecontracts. Last year alone, three playersreceived $80,000 each to attend Suffolk

University.The married father of two balances his

baseball coaching with work as a privateinvestigator for Edward JohnsonAssociates. With campuses in Haverhilland Lawrence and extension sites inAndover, Methuen, and North Andover,Northern Essex Community College is astate-assisted college, offering over 70associate degree and certificate programsas well as hundreds of non credit coursesdesigned for personal enrichment andcareer growth. On Saturday, March 10th, 2007, Melanie,Tiffanie and Bernard Rosario celebratedtheir 15th birthday. They were born on March5th, 1992 in Saint Margaret Hospital, inBoston. They are the children of Felicitaand Geraldo Rosario, long time Lawrenceresidents.

Up to this point, it looks like just anothersocial note about somebody’s birthday.Not if you are Latino or Latina and youarrived at the age of 15!

A tradition, amongst Latinos, is tocelebrate their daughters’ 15th birthday witha lavish and elaborate party. TheQuinceañera is the Latina coming-of-agecelebration on a girl’s 15th birthday. Theword “Quinceañera” is derived from the

These parties, for one child, may costhundreds, perhaps thousands of dollars. It’slike a wedding, and all depends how lavishyou want it to be. Now imagine when yourcelebration includes three of your children.The Rosarios did not elaborate about thecost, they were just happy to be able to doit!

According to Felicita Rosario, when shevisited the doctor at his office, she learnedthat she was pregnant with triplets but didn’tknow their sexes until they were born. Thecouple, who had 2 children already, GeraldoAndrés and Yajaira, had decided to haveanother one. “My husband wanted anotherchild”, said Felicita. “Instead we had three,”she said with a smile.

The celebration started at CorpusChristi Parish, located at 35 Essex Street,where the “quinceañeros” celebrated theirCatholic faith. From there, in a largelimousine, they all came to the Knights of

Columbus in North Andover for the partywhich included dinner and music by a DJ.

The history behind theQuinceañera

The Quinceañera had its origins manycenturies ago when both boys and girlsparticipated in rites of passage.

To prepare for “womanhood,” girls wereseparated from other children at the age of15 so the elder women could teach themabout their future roles as members of familyand community. During the official rites ofpassage, the community would thank thegods for the future wives and mothers, andthe young women would vow to serve thecommunity.

Later, missionaries turned the eventinto a personal affirmation of faith by theyoung women and a pledge to become goodChristian wives and mothers. A churchcelebration became an important part of theoccasion.

Today, the Quinceañera celebrationoften is a lavish party that includes livemusic, a feast and many guests – much likea wedding. The young woman wears anelaborate dress in pink, white, light blue orlavender.

Traditions include receiving a churchblessing, having 14 attendants and escortsto represent the previous 14 years of life,presenting a porcelain doll to a youngersister to symbolize leaving childhoodbehind, changing from flats into high-heeledshoes to represent becoming a youngwoman, and, most important, dancing thefirst dance with the young woman’s father.Some details for this article was obtainedfrom Hallmark Cards, Inc. web page.

Microchips can be a greatform of identification but it is IMPERATIVE that the owner of theanimal keeps their contact information up-to-date with themicrochip company. Buffy was brought to our shelter as a stray inlate January. When we scanned her, we realized that she had amicrochip. We called the microchip company, imagining a happyreunion between cat and owner. Unfortunately, Buffy’s owner hadmoved away and changed her phone number. There was no alternate

contact or vet information and our search quickly hit a dead end. Buffy is a wonderful cat andwe know that we will find her a new home. She loves her toys, as you can see from her pictures,and she is hungry for attention and love. Please come in and meet her. And please take a minuteto verify that your own pets are micro chipped and that your microchip company has yourcorrect address, phone number, an alternate contact, and your vet’s name and phone number.

Princess, Dog, Pit Bull Terrier, Size: Medium, Age: Baby, Gender:Female This is Princess. She is you’re typical puppy, but with an especiallycrazy streak! We are requiring training for Princess, she is lacking in themanners department! She loves to play rough, and can be very mouthy soshe would be too much for kids. She does well with other dogs, as long asthey like to wrestle! Unfortunately in her last home, she wasn’t given thestructure that puppys need, so now she is a little behind where she should bewith her manners. Princess has a lot of potential, but needs an experiencedhome that is will be able to give her the time, patience, and love that sheneeds. If you’re up for the challenge, please come and meet Princess!

He was surrendered to the shelter because he wasn’t appropriatefor the young children in the household but we think he’d be great forany adult-only family. Kenny, Dog, American Staffordshire Terrier, Size: Large, Age: Senior, Gender: MaleThis handsome fellow is named Kenny. Kenny was surrenderedto our shelter in February when his owner lost his home. Hiseasy-going nature and cheerful attitude have immediately madehim a staff favorite. We realize that at 10 and ½ years oldKenny is considered a senior dog but we feel he has a few yearsof love left to give. He loves going for long walks and cuddlingon the couch with a good rawhide bone. He is quick to givekisses and attempts to sit on your lap. He would be a greatcompanion for someone looking for a mellow dog they cantake anywhere. Kenny has done well with other dogs here atthe shelter but has never lived with one in the past. Pleasecome in and meet this great dog!
