Abstract: The collection contains maps relating to Haverhill, Bradford, Essex

County, the state of Massachusetts, and New England.

Organizational History

The Haverhill Public Library was established in 1873 in an agreement between wealthy

industrialist E.J.M. Hale and the City of Haverhill. The agreement stipulated that Mr. Hale would

donate land for a building site and half the money necessary to build and furnish the library if

the people of Haverhill would donate the other half. He further stipulated that the City, in

accepting this gift, would establish a self-perpetuating Board of Trustees and assume

responsibility for the annual operating expenses of the library. The original library building

opened on November 18, 1875. In 1965 the Trustees decided to build a new library facility to

replace the original building. With pledges from the community, proceeds from the sale of the

original building, a federal library construction grant, and the fundraising efforts of the

Trustees, construction began in 1966 and the new library opened in June of 1969. A subsequent

renovation project, completed in 1997, increased space for materials, seating, and overall size

from 30,500 to 44,000 square feet.

Scope and Content Note

Series One contains maps of the City of Haverhill. Included are maps from its founding, as well

as its three hundred year anniversary. Materials also include maps from the 18th-21st century,

street maps, zoning maps, and cemetery maps. There are also maps of land plots dating back to

the 17th century, residential and non-residential blueprints, and pictorial maps. Also included in

this series are maps of Bradford. Series Two contains maps of Essex County, ranging from

[insert dates]. Included are outline maps of the entire county, maps of highways that run

through Essex County, and historical maps from the 1800s. Series Three contains maps of the

Merrimack Valley, ranging from [insert dates]. Included in this series are outline maps of

Merrimack Valley with all its cities and towns, points of interest maps, railroad maps, and

historical maps. Series Four contains maps of the State of Massachusetts. Included are outline

maps, points of interest, and a reproduction of an historical map from 1702. The maps are from

1702-2001. Series Five contains maps of the New England Area. Included are a simple outline

map of New England with each city/town in each state, a railroad map of Massachusetts,

Connecticut, and Rhode Island from 1846, and a road map from 1990.
