Massachusetts Flash Film Festival a SuccessBy Adam Dusenberry, Belmont Media CenterThe sidewalk outside the Studio Cinema in Belmont was crowded with moviegoers waiting to see what Massachusetts filmmakers were able do in just 72 hours.

Created by Adam Dusenberry of Belmont Media Center (BMC) and produced by entire staff of BMC, the festival gave 10 teams of filmmakers a chance to make a film, get it screened in a real movie theatre and a chance at a cash prize. The only catch was that everything had to be done within a designated 72-hour time period. Teams met at the kick-off event at BMC on September 22nd, to draw the genres and to learn the required character, prop and line of dialogue. Then, it was a race against the clock to complete a 4-7 minute film.

Dusenberry was impressed with the turn-out for the festival’s first year, “I did not really know how many people would respond, but based on the success this year, BMC will probably host it again next year”, Dusenberry said.

Ten teams from as far away as the South Shore and as far north as Haverhill participated. A few teams came from the ranks of members of community media centers, including Brookline Access and Belmont Media. The skill level of the teams ranged from the truly novice to local professionals. Three industry judges reviewed each film and selected a professional and non-professional winner.

On October 1st a crowd of over 100 came to the Studio Cinema to see the premiere of the films and to learn who the winners were. All of the films, as well the screening and awards ceremony can be viewed on Belmont Media Center’s website - belmontmedia.org Additionally, the Screening and Awards Ceremony are available on MyMassTV & the Community Media Distribution Network for downloading by access TV channels to air in local communities.

The  third  annual  New  England  Broadcast  and  Cable  Expo  (NEBCExpo)  produced  by  JaDa  Events,  LLC,  was  held  Wednesday,  November  2nd  at  the  DCU  Center  in  Worcester,  MA.  

This  year’s  exposi9on  was  held  in  conjunc9on  with  the  14th  annual  Media  Educators  of  America  (MEOA)  formerly  known  as  the  Video  Educators  of  New  England  (VENE)  fall  conference,  which  is  open  to  all  individuals  that  are  either  involved  in  video  produc9on  or  the  use  of  media  in  an  educa9onal  seVng.  Their  educa9onal  conference  featured  speakers  addressing  topics  ranging  from  virtual  edi9ng,  logging,  review,  and  collabora9on  in  “the  cloud”;  studio  design  and  construc9on  with  a  Holis9c  Approach;  the  relevance  of  the  arts  in  educa9on;  blogging  as  a  means  of  developing  student  por[olios;  ample  networking  9me;  and  more!  Visit  h"p://www.mediaedoa.org  for  details.

Along  with  broadcast  &  cable  equipment  manufacturers  and  representa9ves,  there  was  representa9on  from  a  myriad  of  professional  organiza9ons  and  academic  ins9tu9ons  including:  New  England  Society  of  Mo9on  Picture  and  Television  Engineers  (SMPTE-­‐NE),  Alliance  for  Community  Media  (ACM-­‐NE),  MassAccess,  Project  Bread,  Mt.  Wachuse"  Community  College,  Cayuga  Community  College  (SUNY),  Society  of  Broadcast  Engineers  (SBE)  and  many  more.

Both  events  offered  a  premier  opportunity  to  learn,  network  and  see  firsthand  emerging  trends  that  impact  the  professional  broadcast  and  cable  access  communi9es,  while  affording  a"endees  the  opportunity  to  walk  the  expo  floor  and  see  the  latest  technology  rela9ng  to  video  produc9on,  video  edi9ng,  digital  media,  video  streaming,  video  on-­‐demand,  television  studio  produc9on,  distance  learning,  cable  access  studio,  digital  asset  management,  mobile  broadcast  and  more.  

Show  organizers,  Jan  Haughey  and  David  Scher,  are  pleased  with  the  synergy  the  event  has  generated  over  the  last  few  years  among  the  various  par9cipa9ng  organiza9ons  and  a"endees  that  gathered  for  this  Na9onal  Associa9on  of  Broadcasters  (NAB)  style  expo.  The  convenience  allowed  those  who  cannot  make  the  annual  pilgrimage  to  Las  Vegas,  the  opportunity  to  spend  9me  with  manufacturers  and  local  resellers  right  in  their  own  backyards.
