① Origins of the Izu Peninsula ~ Volcano Gifts from the South ~

Approximately20million years ago, the IzuPeninsulawas a collectionofsubmarinevolcanoes locatedonthePhilippineSeaPlate farsouthofJapan’smain islands (Honshu). These submarine islands andvolcanicislands shifted northwardwith themovement of the Philippine SeaPlateandcollidedwithHonshuapproximatelyonemillionyears ago toform thepresent peninsula. After becoming a peninsula attached toHonshueruptions continuedacross landand large volcanoes arose toform thepresent structureof Izu. About 200,000 years agowhen thevolcanicactivities that created largemountainsended, anotheractivityof individualmonogenetic volcanogroup started, which is oneof theunique featuresofvolcanicactivities in Japan. Theseare thecollectionof small volcanoes that erupted indifferent locationseach time. Theyare named “Izu TobuMonogenetic Volcano Group”, and are activetill today. The Philippine Sea Plate continues to push Izu peninsulaagainstHonshuand this tectonicmovementkeepscreatingdiversityoflandformsinIzu.TheseexceptionalgeologicalfeaturesmakeIzuoneofourplanet’smostdistinctiveregions.
