CATHOLICS COME HOME
2 Welcome to St. George Catholic Church • Tinley Park, IL 60477
Come, Holy Spirit! Have you ever noticed at work how good news brings about a sense of excitement, even vicariously? The news of a spouse who is promoted, a child’s graduation and acceptance into a particular university, a sport’s or academic scholarship awarded to a son or daughter, the birth of a new baby, the joy of an anniversary, the announcement of engagement for marriage and the list goes on. It can have a spontaneous effect of drawing people to an event. Everyone loves success and excitement. It is spread by the crowd. The disciples felt the Spirit of God and were so moved that they followed the Lord’s command: “Go out to all the world and tell the Good News!” In a similar fashion, there lurks a darker side to reality. It is often characterized by the devil. It is the side that looks to tell the bad things in life about others. Rather than following the gospel; imperative to talk to the person you are upset with privately, they prefer to air their complaints in public squares and parking lots. St. Robert Bellarmine characterized this as throwing feathers from a tower into the wind and then trying to gather them back--an impossible task! As we celebrate at St. George we face the same challenge of our faith. What do we believe about the Easter stories we have heard each Sunday from the gospels and the
examples given in homilies? What does our own prayer life stir within our reflections of God’s presence over the years? How do we communicate the good things God has done for us to others? Giving witness is what the first apostles and disciples of Jesus did. They did not have Scriptures to rely upon for they were creating these first stories later to be written as our New Testament. God is depending upon us, in our own day and age, here in Tinley Park and wherever we travel, to be witnesses of His presence by the good we do for others, by the stories we share, by the example we set each day. The disciples did not have academic degrees; they
used the simple gifts God gave them. What gave them strength to face all the adversities they faced from the authorities who forbade them from speaking to those who felt their witness was not in line with the tradition of the Jewish
communities and spoke ill of them was the “breaking of the bread” and the gathering of the community each Sunday. What gives you strength each day? How do you share your faith with your family and friends? Pray for the gifts of the Holy Spirit and the courage to use them to build up His Church. Become involved as an ambassador of Good News by what you say and do in the name of Jesus. --Fr. Ken Fleck

I have been thinking about the many experiences I have had during my three years here at St. George. There have been great moments, funny and difficult ones, some joyful and others sad. But, all of these experiences have provided opportunities for me to grow in understanding my priesthood. The day I found out that I was coming to this parish I was excited, but also nervous. I didn’t know if I would be accepted. I did not feel ready and was uncertain whether my English would be good enough. To my pleasant surprise I felt welcomed and accepted from my first day. The great news is I am leaving more confident and secure in my role as a priest. Thanks to all of you, who have helped me to form a strong foundation. You have given me the opportunity to be part of many events and groups in the parish. All of these have given me an exposure and experience to my ministerial service with so many different people. You all have been instrumental in the formation of my priestly identity - to understand my priesthood in a deeper and practical way. I know that what I have learned here will help me to face the challenges my new assignment may bring and I face them with a positive and hopeful attitude. This coming year I will be transitioning into the Ministry to the Deaf community. I will be serving the Catholic Deaf Community of the Archdiocese of Chicago. This coming year I will be assigned to Notre Dame of Chicago Church while I continue to improve my sign language skills and get more familiar with the Archdiocese Deaf Ministry Office. My contact information is: Notre Dame de Chicago 1335 W. Harrison St. Chicago IL 60607 (312) 243-7400 [email protected] I will be happy to keep in touch to share in our life experiences. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. You will always have a special place in my thoughts and heart. Love in Christ, Fr. Roberto Mercado, Jr.

We extend our sincerest thanks and appreciation to our dear Fr. Roberto Mercado for the years of faithful and joyful service you have afforded to us. As you bid your goodbye to us and continue with your journey, it is our sincere prayer that Christ bless your love of Him and your service to the Church; and reward you for being a faithful servant of God.
You always listened to the needs of our parishioners. You were passionate in all you did within the parish, and this was reflected in your homilies, the many ministries you stayed connected with and your interaction with the Church family. Every one of us will miss your signature smile, your friendship, and above all, sharing with us what God's love is about, full of mercy and hope, healing and filled with joy.
May God bless you Fr. Roberto.

SPARE CHANGE SAVES BABIES
Next weekend on May 21/22, our parish will be participating in the Spare Change Saves Babies Project to benefit The Women’s Centers of Greater Chicagoland. This non-profit organization directly assists mothers and families facing pregnancy under difficult circumstances by offering emotional, financial, material and spiritual support through counseling, clothing and monetary provisions, prayer and other aid. Each year their three locations together have over 4,000 appointments with expecting mothers. By God’s Grace, The Women’s Centers have saved over 39,000 babies—and their mothers—from abortion since opening in 1984. Please take a Baby Bottle home with you from the church on May 21/22, fill it with your spare change, and return it the weekend of June 25/26. This is a simple, but crucial fundraising effort for The Women’s Centers. Please note the Baby Bottles cost almost $1.00 per bottle and are recycled afterwards, so please return your bottle upon completion of the project. Thank you for helping defend life and remember to keep all mothers facing pregnancy under difficult circumstances in your prayers.
YOUR ADOPTED BABY AT THREE MONTHS Very soon the baby you spiritually adopted will have three full months of development toward birth. During the third month the baby becomes quite active in his mother's womb although she will not feel the baby for at least another month. The baby can now squint, swallow and move his tongue. If you could touch the baby's palm, he would make a tight fist. The umbilical cord provides the oxygen the baby needs. Even with all these developments, the baby still only weighs one ounce. What a miracle of life is quietly taking place here! Please continue praying for your adopted baby each day.

Jubilee Year of Mercy December 8, 2015 to November 20, 2016
Mercy Mondays The Second Monday of Every Month at 7:00 pm:
To celebrate the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy, the parishes of Tinley Park, Orland Park and Lemont are collaboratively working to promote the different facets of mercy in our lives. On the second Monday of each month, our parishes are hosting Mercy Monday events, which include times of prayer, reflection and/or putting mercy into action. In this way, we are responding to Pope Francis’ invitation to bring mercy and compassion into every corner of our world. We are called to be instruments of God’s mercy -- which knows no limits and which is needed on so many levels in the world today. There are freewill offerings taken at each event; any contributions received will be set aside for Corporal Works of Mercy outreach & service. Funds may support (but are not limited to) Sole Hope, Port Ministries, Sacred Heart Mission, Tinley/Orland First Responders and local senior living centers. Thank you!
UPCOMING MERCY MONDAY EVENTS
Sat – Mon, June 11 - 13, 2016 Corporal Works of Mercy Weekend
Parishioners will be challenged to participate in Corporal Works of Mercy, either as a family or as individuals working together. From spending time cleaning up area parks to providing home-baked cookies to area first responders or seniors, from giving a day of service in Hopkins Park, IL, to providing lunches to Port Ministries or turning old jeans into foot coverings for people in Uganda through Sole Hope, we will show God’s love in action.
Catholic Women Sharing Faith A ministry of prayer, communication and education!
May the joy of the Risen Savior brighten your life and bring you peace! Sometimes joy comes in the form of a "hug" from a special person who really cares. Our ministry crochets and knits unique shawls that are then washed, blessed and offered to anyone who may like one - the hug can continue even when you are not there! Please call Maureen Cetera at (708) 253-5592, or Pina Quatrini at (708) 606-0898 if you would like a prayer shawl for yourself or for someone you know that would appreciate this special "hug from God." We would like to take this opportunity to express sincere appreciation to all the generous donors who share in our ministry - because of your goodness, we are able to offer prayer shawls free of charge. Ladies of St. George, we welcome you to join us at our Thursday meetings - we are a great group of loving, caring, prayerful women that gather weekly to pray, create prayer shawls and have lots of FUN! You are welcome!!!
Thursday Mornings in May: 9:30 - 11:30 am in the Quiet Room
5/19/2016 May Birthday Party 5/26/2016 Prayer Shawl Ministry Please mark your calendar for the 6th Anniversary Celebration of Prayer Shawl Ministry - Saturday, June 11, 8 am Mass followed by our party. All our St. George CWSF are welcome! "Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect." Romans 12:2
Dressing with Reverence While fashions go in and out of style, reverence never does. No matter what the season, a gentle reminder is in order as to appropriate dress for attending Mass. The manner in which we dress when we gather together to celebrate the Lord’s Supper reflects our reverence and our gratitude. It also reflects our level of respect for one another. Any clothing, or lack of clothing, that distracts those around us is not appropriate. As a parish family, let us encourage one another to be witnesses to our faith with reverence and with mutual respect.
Children and parents interested in participating in the garden club are invited to ill out a form giving permission for children to participate. Parents are also encouraged to be with their children. If you would like to help in the parish garden on the west side of school, or to have a particular plant with your child’s name on it, please ill out a form as well.

A Night at the Races -- what a fun night it was! All who attended this St. George School fundraiser were treated to a great evening of delicious food, a variety of desserts and drinks, a special Mint Julep station, a festive photo booth and an opportunity to win numerous prizes. The highlight of the evening was virtual horseracing, with the atmosphere of a real racetrack. As seen in the pictures, there were many delighted winners! Just another of our wonderful events sponsored by our school!

The Golden Wedding Anniversary Mass will be held on Sunday,
September 18, 2016 at 2:45 pm, at Holy Name Cathedral, 735 North State Street, Chicago, Illinois.
Couples married in 1966 interested in attending this celebration should contact the St. George rectory office at (708) 532-2243. Please respond by June 5 so we may have a timely response to the Archdiocese.
For further information call the Family Ministries Office at (312) 534-8351 or visit the web-site: www.familyministries.org.
Parishioners Advancing Revenue Together Some parishes call it Manna or Scrip; we call it PART. It is the gift card fundraising program at St. George. It is a partnership between the parish and families that benefits both. Why should I use PART if I don’t have a child at St. George School? Several reasons: you can earn credit toward your religious education tuition or any other educational institution - public or private - high school, college or even a different grammar school. You can donate your credit to Youth Ministry, Religious Education, the Hardship Fund, St. George School, St. Vincent de Paul, SPRED, the Prayer Shawl Ministry, etc. And you can participate with no extra cost to you! Just purchase gift cards for the things you already buy like gas and groceries. You pay $10 for a gift card worth $10 - no additional cost to you! Stop by the PART table in the Bride’s Room on Sundays from 8:30 am -12:30 pm for more information, email [email protected] or contact Stacey Yock at (708) 374-1342 for more information.

Taking on a New Task Taking on a new task can be rewarding and can brighten your day. St. George has need of a new Coordinator for the Greeter Ministry. It entails contacting greeters, who assist at all weekend Masses, to give a few instructions about three times a year and attend Commission Meetings which are only twice a year. (Being a greeter is the easiest volunteer job in the Church since there are no meetings.) It is a pleasure to meet and greet people and share your love of Christ with them. Call Lucy at (708) 912-4409.
Will You Spend an Hour? Would you be willing to spend an hour with Jesus each week in Holy Family Chapel? Please select any hour that fits your schedule. Please return this form in the collection basket or to St George Rectory, or call Bill Beckman at (708) 429-2762. If possible, consider one of the open hours listed below. If one of these hours fits your schedule, circle that hour: DAY HOUR

You could be throwing money away!
St. George School collects Box Tops for Education, Tyson A+ Labels for Education and pop tabs. It’s a great way for grandparents, aunts, uncles, neighbors and parishioners to help our school. Just clip the labels from participating products and pull the tabs off pop cans and soup lids and return them to the St. George School office or to the collection bins at the exits of church. Each label is worth money towards items for the school classrooms.
For a list of participating products, please visit: www.boxtops4education.com, www.projectsaplus.tyson.com. Every label counts!
Thank you for supporting St. George School.
Please recycle your newspapers and other paper products in our recycling bins located near the garage in the parish parking lot.

ST. GEORGE PARISH INFORMATION
▪Anointing of the Sick/Reconciliation can be arranged by contacting the Rectory to have a priest celebrate the sacraments with the person who is seriously ill or homebound. ▪Baptisms will take place on the first and third Sunday of every month at 1 pm. The family must be registered. A baptismal preparation program is obligatory in ADVANCE; call the Rectory to register. ▪Christian Initiation of Adults is a program for anyone inquiring and seeking information about entering the Catholic faith. Contact the Rectory. ▪Holy Hour with Benediction takes place on the First Friday of the month at 7 pm in the church. ▪Hospital Visits can be made by our priests or deacons, if notified by family members or friends. Although sacramental needs of patients are administered by the hospital chaplain or by a local priest, in an emergency, St. George clergy will respond to sacramental needs. ▪Ministry of Care Mandated Agape Ministers of Care are available to visit, pray with, and bring Holy Communion to those who are sick and unable to attend Mass. Notify the Rectory when this service is needed. ▪Perpetual Adoration takes place in the Holy Family Chapel located southwest of the church.
▪Registration We welcome new members with open arms. We set the table to welcome you after the 9:30 am Mass on the third Sunday of the month in the Cahill Center or by appointment with one of the priests in the rectory. ▪Stewardship involves your time, talent and treasure. Contact the Rectory for assistance in getting started in any of the Parish’s ministries and organizations. Please remember St. George Parish when planning your estate or preparing your will. ▪Wedding arrangements must be made four months in advance of the wedding date. You must be a registered parishioner for six months prior to making arrangements. Please schedule your church date before reserving your hall. ▪Bulletin information provides updates on parish and Archdiocesan events. Please submit articles or recommendations to [email protected] by Monday noon before publication date. Because of space limitations, articles will be limited to St. George activities and information, as well as Archdiocesan events and news. All articles are subject to editing and will be published at the discretion of the Pastor. No guarantees can be made as to size or placement of the articles.
