Preparing for the hour of death

The Catholic Church “encourages us to prepare our-selves for the hour of our death,” (Catechism 1014),

and provides ministry to the dying. The primary sacra-ment is anointing of the sick—and the importance of receiving confession is encouraged. The grace they receive through those sacraments and the peace they

get—especially from the forgiveness of sins to prepare themselves for eternity—and from reception of Com-munion, is a great gift. So, usually, anointing of the sick, confession and holy Communion [called viati-

cum, “food for the journey,” when received for the last time]. These three when received together are called

“the last rites.”

There is an increase of grace, as with every sacrament, and supernatural help from God. The Letter of St.

James (5:14-15) says [paraphrased]: “If there is any-one sick among you, bring them to the elders of the

church—the priests of the church—let them be anoint-ed and prayed over; with that comes health of the body

and forgiveness of sins.” That particular sacrament prepares the soul for judgment and for eternity.

What prayers are typically said for the dying?

The most familiar ones are the Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be and Act of Contrition. We ask God for grace for the person to strive—as we all should—to make an amendment of life. We ask for forgiveness of sin, to cooperate with God’s grace and to live the way God wants us to according to his commandments and our

state of life.

There are also particular prayers in the Roman Ritual set aside by the Church for the dying: to the Virgin

Mary, to St. Joseph the patron for a happy death, and particular psalms to help the person realize the reality

of eternity.

There are special promises related to praying the Di-vine Mercy Chaplet with the dying.

Divine Mercy of Christ that’s one devotion we particu-larly emphasize. Even if the patient doesn’t know [the chaplet] and are not praying it with us, we are praying it for them. As Our Lord told St. Faustina, the promise

of grace and mercy are available even to those who hear it. We also encourage them to foster that devotion

on their own.

Rity

Święta Rita jest patronką spraw trudnych. Pewnie nie brakuje nam w życiu sytuacji, z którymi sobie

nie radzimy. Wtedy najlepiej zwrócić się z modlitwą

do św. Rity!

Święta Rito, Patronko spraw trudnych, Orędow-niczko w sytuacjach beznadziejnych, cudna

gwiazdo świętego Kościoła naszego, zwierciadło cierpliwości, pogromicielko szatanów, lekarko

chorych, pociecho strapionych, wzorze prawdzi-wej świętości, ukochana Oblubienico Chrystusa Pana naznaczona cierniem z korony Ukrzyżowa-nego. Przy-bądź mi z pomocą, o święta Rito i spraw, abym

doznała skutków Twej opieki, by modlitwy moje u tronu Bożego stały się skuteczne. Wyproś mi

wzmocnienie wiary, nadziei i miłości, szczerego i dziecięcego nabożeństwa do Matki Bożej oraz

łaskę… (wymienić ją). I to spraw, abym zwyciężywszy wszelkie przeszko-dy i pokusy, mogła dojść kiedyś do nieba i tam Ci

dziękować i wiecznie cieszyć się towarzystwem Ojca, Syna i Ducha Świętego. Amen.
