71 Years

On April 9

Meet Sophia Ortega, who referred her mother Debbie to the Mission after she came in! She says,

―I would have been living from place to place, motherless, and living to die.‖

What was your childhood like? My childhood was dysfunctional. My mom raised us the best she knew how, but she used heroin for many years. My father was an alcoholic and was in and out of my life.

Who introduced you to drugs and what happened after that? I was introduced to drugs by my older friends when I was in the 5th grade. It made me very sick. But, as I got older, I began to enjoy smoking weed. After having my first daughter at 15, I became addicted to methamphetamine. I used to WANT it, then it became that I NEEDED it. I was in and out of my daughter's life. I had been to a few programs and none was successful for me. At age 23, I had my second child and 3 years later, I had my last child. My life was so unmanageable. I lost custody of two of my children who got adopted three years ago.

Who told you about the Mission? As soon as I completed another program, my drug court counselor suggested the Mission to me, but I was sure I had my life under control. After one month out of the program, I broke my hip, then began using again. So, before I went “full blown” into my addiction, I came to the Mission. I finally threw up my hands and came in.

What have you learned through the New Life Addiction Treatment Program? Life is more important today than ever before; I learned to love myself; I learned to never settle for less; I learned that "with God, all things are possible"; and I learned that running away is not an option for me. I will be the best woman I am here to be.

What have you been able to accomplish during your stay at the Mission? I gave my life to Christ in June 2010, and was baptized; I lost, petitioned and then regained reunified rights with my oldest children; I helped my mother join the Program; I graduated the first phase of the program (classes, computer learning center, counseling); Sobriety for a year; I have a job as an "on call" house-woman; and lastly, I opened a banking account for the first time in my life. My goals are to go to a school to get my GED and then become an Ultrasound Technician; Regain a relationship with my oldest daughter; Stay connected to a church and bring my daughter to know Christ and to a youth group; and to get a place of my own. Thank you for your gifts, the Mission is a great place to start a NEW LIFE!

The Gospel Center Rescue Mission will host the "Sing For THEIR Supper" Karaoke Fundraiser Series For

The Homeless the Fridays of June 17, July 15 & August 19 at 6pm-10pm in De Carli Square, Downtown Stockton.

The phrase "Sing For Your Supper" is used to describe a singer that performs songs to earn his or her meals

in order to survive.

The "Sing For THEIR Supper" Karaoke Fundraising Series For The Homeless are a fun way for singers (and non-

singers alike) to perform for meals served to the homeless at the Gospel Center Rescue Mission every day.

"Sing For THEIR Supper" performers are invited to ask family, friends, co-workers or members of your church,

club, group, business or organization to pledge donations for meals for each performance. You will have the oppor-tunity to perform from a selection of hundreds of songs

„live‟ on stage at the De Carli Square (Singers will be charged $2 per song, unless they have raised pledges;

Pledge forms are online at gcrms.org/events.htm).

If you are unable to attend, you may still make a pledge and designate (or dedicate) your performance opportunity

to someone in attendance at the event. Also, please see Sponsorship Opportunities to the left.

For more information, please visit www.gcrms.org/events.htm or call (209) 320-2329.
